Young continues to prove that he is one hell of a prince and one hell of a man. Ra On comes scarily close to having her secret discovered. The king continues to grow even more paranoid, and Prime Minister Kim remains his shady self.
Top 10 Moments:
- Eunuch Han’s able to escape Young’s notice (drats! And here I’d thought he’d been caught)
With Young joining their conversation and asking how he knows Ra On’s name, Eunuch Han thinks fast and explains that he’s been searching for Ra On who he’d known since she was a child. The two men then move their conversation to Young’s private quarters, where Eunuch Han explains that he had kept his eye out for Ra On because he owes her mother a huge debt and he’s been looking for a way to repay it. He hadn’t been able to do so however, because Ra On and her mother had separated and he lost contact with the two of them. Although Young is at first suspicious, the explanation works for him and he makes a request to Eunuch Han: Eunuch Han can pay back his debt to Ra On by keeping her safe in the palace. Eunuch Han agrees, and when he leaves the prince’s quarters, he tells Ra On that he’s sure she has a ton of questions, so he will call her at another time.
2. Someone tries to poison the king, and now, it’s the grocer’s turn to be leveled with accusations (poor man)
Before the king’s to eat his meal, his food is tested for poison (as per custom). Everyone’s shocked though when the silver cutlery turns black (indicative of poison), and the already paranoid king becomes even more so. The news soon spread and the guards investigate who could be behind it. They soon discover though that there was a new person in the palace: the person who’d supplied the kitchens with the ingredients they’d used to prepare the king’s food, and person turns out to be the father of the little girl who’s already in prison on allegation charges that she’s a part of the rebel forces (shit. That poor family’s so ruined).
3. The late Queen was a very wise woman (which makes the fact that Queen Kim is now the present Queen totally unfair)
With the ministers calling for the arrest of the grocer and his daughter (seriously though. These men are so shameless), Young is understandably confused as he has no idea what to think or who to believe. That night, he flashes back to his mother telling him of her desire that he become a king who is not only wise and discerning, but who also listens to his people and seeks to protect each and everyone of them. Young now wonders aloud what to believe, especially now that everything seems so difficult. Ra On replies by telling him that her grandfather used to tell her that one doubts everything when one is sad (hmmm. That’s actually pretty wise). Young perks up at the words and tells Ra On to make him happy then. And the two of them spend the time looking into each other’s eyes and smiling happily (awwwww. So cute).
4. It wasn’t poison that was in the king’s food after all (although we’re stumped as to what it is then)
Do Gi finds Ra On looking down in the dumps and asks her what’s wrong. She perks up when she remembers that Do Gi’s an expert on poison and brings up the fact that the so-called poisoned food that had almost been served to the king was served to the animals. But none of them died after eating the food. It’s a curious case and Do Gi does a little demonstration for Ra On and Young by inserting the blackened cutlery into boiling locust honey. He is surprised though when he wipes the cutlery and blackness comes off. He tells Ra On and Young that nothing can clean silver cutlery that’s come in contact with poison, which means that whatever was in that food, wasn’t poison after all. The question then is, what on earth was put in the food? To get that answer, Young heads to Master Jeong’s house and there’s a moment when he passes by a woman who catches his attention (wait. Is that Ra On’s mother?). He doesn’t follow the woman however and heads inside to make his request known to Master Jeong: He would like the man to return to court with him so he can help him save an innocent child.
5. Ra On really does have nine lives (whew! They’re too many close calls lately Ra On. You have to be really careful)
Due to the king’s paranoia that the rebels might have found their way into his palace and someone in the palace is a spy, he demands that everyone’s quarters be searched. Eunuch Sung who searches Ra On’s quarters finds her beautiful hanbok and takes it to Queen Kim who wonders if Ra On’s possibly a girl. She therefore has Ra On brought to her and drops the hanbok in front of Ra On. Ra On’s frightened, but says nothing and Queen Kim declares that she will find out the truth herself. She then asks the other eunuchs to strip Ra On (shit. This can’t be good). Young who has no idea what’s happening is at the moment talking with Ha Yeon who asks him if she had in any way driven him away. He explains to her that there’s a woman he likes (awwww), and just as Ha Yeon asks him who this woman is, Eunuch Jang comes running (thank heavens for Eunuch Jang!) about Ra On, even as he tells Young to hurry to Queen Kim’s palace. Thankfully, Young makes it just before the strip search can commence. Queen Kim’s practically giddy as she declares that Ra On’s so pretty she could even be a woman, which must be what’s giving Young all those confusing feelings. But, they’ve discovered female clothing in Ra On’s room and she has her suspicions about Ra On, hence her asking that Ra On strip. Young cooly tells her to go right ahead then and strip Ra On, that way she can add to the unjust treatment she’s giving to a poor Eunuch. Queen Kim makes to do just that (shit. My heart just stopped), but then Eunuch Han walks into the room and tells Queen Kim not to disrespect the office of the Eunuchs. After all, Ra On’s been examined before she was made a Palace eunuch, and she was examined once again by Eunuch Sung (hahahaha. That’s true). Eunuch Sung who can’t admit that he’d gotten Eunuch Ma to do the examination, admits that yes he did examine Ra On. Eunuch Han then adds the final nail on Queen Kim’s potential coffin by pointing out that the king will be irate should he learn that Queen Kim looked at the naked body of a man whilst heavily pregnant with his child. That seals it for Queen Kim who although she looks furious at the opportunity being taken away from her, has them take Ra On out of her palace (whew! That was close. Too close).
6. Yoon Sung’s tired of keeping his feelings hidden (and all I want is for him to stay far away from Ra On and Young’s beautiful romance)
Yoon Sung meets with Byung Yeon and expresses his surprise that Byung Yeon’s willing to see him. Byung Yeon points out that they were all friends once and Yoon Sung agrees. He then brings up Ra On and asks if she’s okay, and his face falls slightly when Byung Yeon replies that she’s with Young. Yoon Sung confesses that when he’d been younger, he wanted to be Young’s best friend but now he’s someone that Young isn’t comfortable with (can you blame him though? Your grandfather’s the antichrist and your aunt came straight from the fiery pits of hell). He goes on to talk about having found a woman he likes and Byung Yeon stops him and tells him to keep the thought in his heart. Yoon Sung though, refuses to do so and admits that it’s the first time he’s wanted something so badly (and that dear is where I draw the line. She’s a person, not a thing and you know quite well that she’s chosen who she wants to end up with. And that person isn’t you. Walk away Yoon Sung. Walk away).
7. Ra On’s reunited with her Grandfather
Master Jeong makes it to the palace and stops an eunuch to ask for directions. The eunuch he stops is Ra On however, and the two of them circle each other in a “I can’t believe this” stance. But then, Ra On delightedly calls him “grandfather” and Master Jeong calls her Ra On. He’s surprised as to how she became an eunuch and Ra On gives a pleased smile as she tells him that she’s actually pretty damn good at her job (hahahaha). Master Jeong doesn’t find the news comforting either (hahahaha), but the two hug. Master Jeong then flashes back to when royal guards had come searching for Ra On and her mother in his house and he’d directed the guards away, and gone back into the house where sure enough Ra On and her mother were hiding. Back in the present, Young is surprised to see that Master Jeong and Ra On know each other. He is even more surprised to learn that Master Jeong is Ra On’s “grandfather”.
8. Young learns the cause of the discolouration and is able to free the grocer and his daughter (awwww)
Master Jeong shows Young the cause of the discolouration. Apparently, it’s a particular herb which contains just a hint of sulphur. The herb isn’t poisonous at all and Master Jeong wonders why the royal physicians couldn’t have easily detected it. Young though scoffs at the realization and sure enough, we see Ui Gyo and Geun Gyo smiling about the fact that Young will never find out what really happened because all the physicians are terrified of facing Prime Minister Kim’s wrath. They think this means Young will finally learn that he has no one who supports him in the palace. Young has his head on straight however as he immediately sets out to release the grocer and his daughter (Awwww). The grocer immediately recognizes him and his daughter is surprised that the man at the lantern festival was the Crown Prince. She wonders if her wish to meet the king has been granted and Young smiles at her and tells her to watch him make Joseon a better country.
9. Ra On wants to take the noble idiocy route but Young isn’t having it (good for you Young!)
The king calls Young once again, and brings up the marriage issue. He insists that he’s doing it for Young’s own good but Young tells his father that he has no interest in marrying a woman he doesn’t love. Ra On meanwhile, is in the library, thinking about Eunuch Jang’s comment that marrying would help solidify Young’s power. And so, when Young joins her, she smiles as she tells him to talk with her. As they walk, she admits that the one thing she loves is Young calling her name (awwww). Young admits that he loves calling her name as well, and Ra On continues that getting that alone, makes her happy. Young however wants more, and when Ra On finishes her statement by saying that she doesn’t want him coming to any harm, and so would like him to say yes to the marriage proposal, Young shoots it down and storms off. Ra On cries silent tears and Young flashes back to his conversation with Master Jeong when he’d admitted that Ra On’s the woman he wants to Master Jeong to help. Master Jeong had been curious about the reason, and Young had admitted that he loves her. Master Jeong had however talked about their difference in status and their twisted fates, and declared that Ra On needs someone else, not Young (awwwww. But why?!!!!!!).
10. Young grants Ra On’s wish (this is why she keeps falling more and more in love with him)
Young takes Ra On to a hill to watch the sunset. As they sit together, he brings up the grocer’s daughter and talks about his dreams for Joseon: a place where a child can be a child and a woman can be a woman (awwww). That’s the Joseon he intends to build, but he needs Ra On to wait for him to build that Joseon. He then flashes back to when he’d met Master Jeong earlier that morning to make a request, and Master Jeong had wondered what Young would do if Ra On finding her mother would bring him harm, because if they just buried the truth, he and Ra On could live happily together. We then return to the present as Young has Ra On promise him that should she encounter a difficult situation and need to give something up, she wouldn’t give him up. Ra On makes the promise and Young tells her that his wish has been granted. It takes a moment for it to click for Ra On and she tears up as Young tells her that he’s found her mother (Awwwww). She turns around and sure enough her mother is right behind her. Ra On’s mother apologizes for having taken so long and the two women hug and cry, whilst Young watches (*sniff. *Sniff).
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because this bitch of a Queen actually wanted to strip and search Ra On and she took great joy in how uncomfortable Ra On was with the situation and the fact that she was able to get to Young through the incident. The woman’s a witch and has me wishing that Hong Joo was in this drama so she can lay a thick ass curse on her and the entire Kim family. Urgh!
Headache inducing moment:
The minute she said those two words, my heart stopped. Shit. And with Young bluffing and telling Queen Kim to go ahead and search Ra On, I couldn’t breathe. That was one hell of a close call.
This episode’s a Strawberry Wine Punch, sweet, light and intoxicating, with those quiet moments that screamed of the love Young and Ra On shared. And no matter how much I like Yoon Sung, and I think he’s a great second lead, the care and love he gives to Ra On pales in comparison to Young who’s basically taken a stance where he’s going to let the woman he loves go, just so she can be happy. It’s sweet and touching but also has me worried because with Ra On and her mother reunited, something tells me that that rebel group will act and Young will be caught in the crosshairs. Here’s hoping our lovebirds survive it and get their happy ending. There shall be no little mermaid ending for our puppies.
