This episode is all Young’s because no Crown Prince has ever made coming to a rescue look so damn cool. Eunuch Ma just can’t keep his bloody mouth shut. Ra On gets into big trouble. The Qing emissary is a complete arse and Ra On’s friends come to her rescue in the most spectacular of ways.
Top 10 Moments:
- All hail Joseon gisaengs. Helping to maintain the secret of a female being a male since time immemorial (hahahaha)
Young and Yoon Sung get into a pissing contest about who exactly Ra On would leave with. Yoon Sung figures that Young has a problem with Ra On leaving with him whilst Young vehemently denies it. The moment though is interrupted when some gisaengs descend on the party as they fawn over Yoon Sung (who we know is popular with the ladies), and Ra On (who is just plain popular). Ra On thus takes advantage of the moment to hold onto the gisaeng she’s with and declare that they should enjoy the night away. Young’s shocked at the words, and also pissed, although he covers it up by sneering and declaring that he will leave Ra On and Yoon Sung to enjoy their time together (hahaha. Jealous Young is so cute). Ra On and Yoon Sung soon separate from the gisaengs and Yoon Sung nervously brings up the fact that the situation is not what it seems (hahaha. Yeah right). Ra On teases him about his frequenting gisaeng parlors and when Yoon Sung tries to use a pick-up line on her, she wonders if that’s the line he’s fond of using on gisaengs (hahaha. She’s so not going to let the matter go is she?).
2. Byung Yeon belongs to a secret Robin Hood clan. Although Ra On’s identified him (hope he doesn’t tell anyone. I want Ra On staying safe)
Yoon Sung and Ra On’s walk comes to a halt when the masked vigilante being chased comes running into their direction. The man flies into the air and arrows are fired, one of which grazes him. He lands on the ground, face bare because his mask was dislodged and locks eyes with Ra On who recognizes him. She doesn’t say anything however, and when she gets back to their hideout, Byung Yeon’s tending to his injuries. She’s all smiles when she sees him and Byung Yeon merely grumbles at her to go back to sleep. The next morning, the ministers meet with Prime Minister Kim and inform him about the night’s happenings. Apparently some abusive nobles had been robbed and the rumor in town is that the Hong Gyeong Nae clan: a clan famous for its robbing the rich and distributing the wealth to the poor philosophy, is coming back into play. They then show Prime Minister Kim Byung Yeon’s mask and confirm that it was the same mask that was worn by the man who’d shot an arrowed message in the midst of the Prime Minister’s festivities.
3. Young makes a very jealous prince (and a cute one too because he has no idea why he’s so jealous. Hehehehe)
Ra On helps Young get dressed for the day, but Young who’s still smarting from the events of the previous night wonders if she had fun at the gisaeng parlour. When she smiles and replies that she did, he’s standoffish as he admits that he’d forgotten that even an eunuch would want to hold a beautiful woman. After promising to never see another person in her again, he calls Eunuch Jang and dismisses Ra On (ouch. Poor Ra On). And when one of the eunuchs comes running in to ask Eunuch Jang for a trainee he can spare to be moved to a different palace, Young overrides Eunuch Jang who had started to say that Young is very territorial of his eunuchs, by offering Ra On, up for the position. But, when he’s at the yard, practising his archery, he imagines Ra On cheering for him and his face brightens, then falls when he realizes that she isn’t there (well she would have been if your ass hadn’t shipped her off to another palace). He’s so distracted that he sends an arrow flying in the wrong direction and almost injures Ha Yeon who was on her way to visit her childhood friend: Princess Myung Eun. Ha Yeon’s pleased to see him, and especially so, when she realizes that he’s the Crown Prince (girl, he’s not going to like you. He’s half in love with Ra On already. He just does’t know it yet). And so, when she goes to visit Myung Eun, she’s all smiles (even though they aren’t that close), and promises to visit the palace more often (so she can visit Young of course).
4. Young’s love sick (but at the moment, he’s in denial)
Later that evening, Young flips through his note and laughs at the little cartoon drawings Ra On had drawn on the corner of his page. He imagines her doing so right across from him, with an ink stain on her nose (awww. So cute), and flashes back to some moments spent with her. He’s utterly unaware that at that same moment, creepy Eunuch Ma is meeting the gross Qing emissary to inform him that he’s found what the man’s been so desperately looking for: something that he’s sure would entice him (what the fuck? Ewwww. Gross! What a snake). Meanwhile, Young’s being examined by a doctor. He tells the physician about his insomnia, the flushness he feels, and his frequent hallucinations and asks for a diagnosis. Although the doctor looks terrified to mention it, he informs Young that what he’s feeling is his body trying to cope with the fact that he wants to be with someone he cannot have (hahahaha. The guy just diagnosed him as being gay didn’t he?). The news sets Eunuch Jang on a round of hiccups and Young orders the doctor to leave.
5. Young comes to the rescue, although Ra On’s still in a whole lot of trouble
Ra On informs Byung Yeon about spending the night in another palace. Apparently, she’s to be on night watch for the emissary (shit. This does not look good), and Eunuch Ma (The asshole!) leads her straight to the room and closes the door. The alarm bells start to ring and Ra On tries to exit, but the emissary creeps closer and declares that she’s the dancer from the night of the celebration. He asks if she’s merely a man who looks pretty enough to be a woman, or a woman masquerading as an eunuch. When Ra On tries to leave, he grabs her and declares that he holds the future of the Crown Prince in his hand and as an eunuch, she should be willing to do anything that will help the Crown Prince (*barf*. Allow me a moment while I throw up). When Ra On pushes him away, he slaps her hard and when she pushes him away yet again, he attempts to hit her even harder but his doors slam open and a guard goes flying. Even as he wonders who it is, Young comes barging in and kicks the man (yes! Good for you!). He then pulls his sword, acts like he’s about to slash the man, but restrains himself in the last moment and storms out. News soon reaches the king who’s pissed, whilst Queen Kim is all smiles as she states that she will have her father come over (urgh! Disgusting woman. Seriously though king. You could have made Concubine Park, Queen as opposed to this snake). Young meanwhile, drags Ra On away from the palace and demands to know how she could have been so naively foolish as to remain in the room when things got strange. Ra On replies that she hadn’t wanted to cause any trouble for Young with Qing, and an angry, Young wonders who she is to make him so angry (she’s the woman you love sweetie). He doesn’t have time to say anything more as guards show up, as per the king’s orders and arrest Ra On. And nothing Young says is able to change their minds.
6. It’s Yoon Sung’s turn to protect Ra On (and he’s so sexy doing it. Yummy!)
Young’s pleas to his father go unanswered and merely get him on house arrest in his palace. The eunuchs meanwhile talk about it, with Eunuch Sung mentioning the rumors that he’s heard. Turns out word around town is that Young likes men. Eunuch Jang warns him to shut up and Eunuch Sung walks away. Meanwhile, Eunuch Ma (fucking asshole jerk!) who’s been silent all this while, tells Eunuch Jang that the person Young likes might not be a man. Just as he’s about to say more, Yoon Sung shows up and has him follow him to his room. He asks Eunuch Ma if he was the one to take Ra On to the emissary’s room and when Eunuch Ma confirms it, Yoon Sung opens a safe in which he’s kept a gun, loads a lead bullet in it and levels the gun on Eunuch Ma (hmmmmm. Sexy. Sexy. Sexy. One leveled a sword on a disgusting toad and the other levels a gun on a slimy swine. Ra On, you lucky girl, you). His instruction, Eunuch Ma should let Ra On be. The words have Eunuch Ma asking why exactly Yoon Sung’s so concerned for Ra On. When he asks if maybe Yoon Sung too is aware of Ra On’s secret, Yoon Sung fires at a lamp right beside Eunuch Ma’s head (yes!!!!). That shuts Eunuch Ma up pretty fast, and Yoon Sung informs him to keep quiet about Ra On. Should anyone ever find out about Ra On’s secret, he will take it to mean that the news came from Eunuch Ma, and so would kill Eunuch Ma.
7. Spending prison time together. If that’s not love, then I don’t know what is?
Ra On’s locked up and her friends: Do Gi and Sung Yeol come to not only check up on her, but to also give her news. There’s a high chance that Young could be dethroned because of what happened. Young though isn’t concerned with that as he’s at the moment trying to find a way to nail the Qing emissary for crimes he’s committed. However, he has no proof and when he asks Byung Yeon, Byung Yeon flashes back to a book he’d taken from his secret society. However, he says nothing to Young and Young then asks him to find the route the emissary will take. With that settled, Young puts into motions his next plan, which is diverting the guards guarding his palace, and escaping to the prison to see Ra On. She looks rather worse for wear and Young is clearly affected to see her like that. Ra On’s focus though is on Young getting into trouble should anyone find him in the cells with her, but Young doesn’t care. Instead, he extracts a promise from Ra On that she will not hold back for anyone anymore, not even him. Ra On then brings up his words from the last time they’d spoken and asks him if he’s still angry at her. He replies that he’s more angry at himself than her. The answer though, doesn’t seem to make Ra On any happier.
8. Young tries once again to save Ra On. Unfortunately, he doesn’t pull it off
The Qing emissary has a meeting with Ui Gyo and Yoon Sung, and he rants about how affronted he feels about the treatment he received (shut the fuck up. Asshole). He is willing to let things slide however, if they let him take Ra On with him to Qing, so he can punish her there (hell no!). Yoon Sung immediately objects, but Ui Gyo shoots him down and agrees to the demand. And so, after the meeting, Yoon Sung heads over to meet Byung Yeon to ask him for help. Over at the prisons, Ra On’s getting moved so she can join the emissary’s entourage. Eunuch Han stops the guard for a moment, to apologize for how Ra On’s being treated and to offer to pass on any messages she might have to her family. He’s stunned when he hears that she lost her mother in the raids that took place ten years prior, and he’s even more shocked to learn that she’s now 18 (yup. Incoming birth secret). Ra On’s led to the Qing’s emissary’s carriage and the slime smirks to see her. They’ve barely set out however, when an arrow comes flying and Young appears with a sword pointed at the emissary as he demands that the man leave Ra On behind. Prime Minister Kim and the other ministers show up, with the Prime Minister wondering if Young is willing to sacrifice the people who are terrified, for the sake of an eunuch. Young points out that the Prime Minister and his ilk like to use the people as their shield, but the wind is taken out of his sails when Ra On steps up and tells him that just as he’d told her not to hold back because of anyone, she wants him as well to hold back his anger, not for her, but because, as the Crown Prince, he should do so for the people. At that same moment, guards come rushing in to hold their sheathed swords at Young as they demand that he drop his sword (a la the king’s orders). He spots Byung Yeon for a moment, and looks heartbreakingly sad as he drops the sword. The Qing emissary smiles at this (I repeat, he’s a jerkface), as do the ministers (I hope you all burn). Ra On meanwhile, is led on, along with with the Qing emissary’s entourage.
9. Using teamwork to get rid of the scum that’s plaguing them all (now I’m hoping the boys mend their friendship and work together some more)
Whilst Prime Minister Kim is meeting with Minister Jo (Ha Yeon’s father), to suggest that they partner together for the sake of the ‘country’, via the marriage of their children, the Qing emissary makes a stop to take a break. Ra On’s tied to a tree and the Qing emissary takes some people to what turns out to be an illegal trade of some of the tribute that he’d gotten from the king. The trade off is interrupted though when Byung Yeon and Young join the party (oooh, nice. Very nice), and Young snarks that there was a gift he forgot to give the emissary. Soon, both Byung Yeon and Young are taking on the emissary’s guards, and they make quick work of them all. Over at the emissary’s carriage, Yoon Sung brings along with him, Qing inspectors. Immediately the emissary’s guards are apologetic as they let the inspector through. The emissary meanwhile, is outraged, until Young points out that his attempted theft and trafficking of the tribute which would earn him the death penalty. The emissary is at first terrified, but then he takes comfort in the fact that the Qing emperor would be more likely to believe him than to believe Young. Young agrees, which is why he’d made sure that the inspector came as well. The emissary’s shocked at the sight and Byung Yeon notes Yoon Sung watching them from the woods. He nods at Yoon Sung who nods right back, and Byung Yeon flashes back to Yoon Sung not only telling him about the emissary’s change of course, but also giving him a map of the meeting point as well. Byung Yeon had asked if Yoon Sung would be alright and Yoon Sung had replied that he would be fine as long as Ra On is safe (awwwwww). Byung Yeon had then visited Young with the book filled with the emissary’s interactions with the merchants (the book he’d swiped from his secret group, which…. awwwwww), along with the map. Young had been delighted and had asked that Byung Yeon find out who all the merchants are before reaching out to the inspector. Byung Yeon had needed time, which was why Young had done the display of trying to stop the emissary’s carriage at the palace gate, and why he’d dropped his sword and let go when he’d spotted Byung Yeon. Now back in the present, the emissary tries pleading for his life but the inspector charges him for misuse of power and informs him that payment will come in the form of his life (whoohoo!!! Good riddance to bad rubbish).
10. Young comes to the rescue yet again (seriously, this group of friends are the ones you want in your corner when you’re bound for slavery in a foreign country)
The guards guarding Ra On are struck down one at a time, and then in comes Young, striding in (with the sunset in the background and looking very dashing). He cuts off her binds and tells her the good news: she can return home. Ra On tears up at the words and admits that she’d been afraid that she really would be taken to Qing. Young replies that he’d been scared that he would get there too late. Byung Yeon then shows up, leading two horses: one for himself, and the second for Ra On and Young. Ra On sits in front of Young who informs her that she will be coming back to his palace. She wonders if he’s still angry and he admits that he is. But he’d gotten even angrier when she hadn’t been around. And so, he wants her to stay by his side (awwww. He just keeps making all those declarations that get me in the heart.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because not only did this asshole try to rape Ra On, but he also had the audacity to threaten Young. What an asswipe. Urgh!
Headache inducing moment:
Seeing Eunuch Ma being so despicable and throwing Ra On to the wolves gave me a headache and sickened me to my stomach.
This episode’s a French 75. It’s a celebration of the amazingness that is Young, Yoon Sung and Byung Yeon, three men who rose to the occasion to save their friend, and who succeeded brilliantly at it. I know a lot of people had a problem with Ra On being a damsel in distress and having to be saved but this episode wasn’t about that for me. Joseon wasn’t a time when eunuchs or women had much of a voice, and although I know very well that Ra On is quite capable of rescuing herself, it felt satisfying to see her friends put in all the skills and connections at their disposal to get her out of a bind. Especially because I am well aware that should the situation be reversed and should it be Ra On who’s called to save her friends, she too would not hesitate to put all her resources to use. It’s also a celebration of Eunuch Ma getting the scare of his life, and the emissary losing his life. Young keeps proving to use that he constantly thinks several steps ahead and that whatever surface plan he shows is nothing compared to the bigger ploy he has in place. It’s a wonderful thing indeed.
