The Hong’s keep showing us their worse selves and confirm that you don’t want these doctors coming anywhere near you when you’re in a hospital. Chairman Hong’s surgery is successful. Hy Jung’s car gets her in trouble. Seo Woo’s still the slimy snake from high school (except now she wears a lab coat) and Ji Hong and Hye Jung reach an impasse.
The Episode in 10 Moments:
- Hye Jung comforts Ji Hong (and does it beautifully too)
We open in the past, in the one moment when Ji Hong had saved the pregnant woman and Hye Jung had decided she wanted to be a doctor. As we see that moment, Hye Jung tells us that true relationships can change people. We flash to when her, Soon Hee and Seo Woo had called themselves friends and back to when Seo Woo’s jealousy started. As we flashback to the reunion scene on the helipad, Hye Jung continues that the person she’s with can transform her life, which is why people can be both a source of hope and despair. We then pick up in the present after Ji Hong had threatened to kill Yoon Do should the surgery go badly. Yoon Do merely smiles and replies that a fortune teller had told him he would live a long, healthy life and Ji Hong replies that he’s pretty good. Yoon Do admits to having hated Ji Hong in the past but now, he’s starting to like him. Yoon Do has no problem with offering the compliment as he tells Ji Hong that they’re rivals, fighting over one woman. Ji Hong asks if Yoon Do’s finally gotten that cafeteria lunch and Yoon Do replies that it would happen soon. Ji Hong tells him to have that lunch first, before calling himself Ji Hong’s rival. He walks away and Yoon Do grumbles about Ji Hong hitting a sore spot (hahaha). Hye Jung though who’s been listening in on the conversation hurries after Ji Hong and when she catches up to him, she slips her fingers into his (awwwww. So cute). He smiles and calls her aggressive and she replies that he has big hands. Ji Hong then uses those big hands to hold onto her hands and suggests that they go for a walk. As they walk, he compliments her on having done a good job.
2. Even in the midst of his pain, Ji Hong still finds the time to worry about Hye Jung
Back at home, Hye Jung walks in to find Soon Hee having prepared a meal for her to take to Ji Hong, although it comes with a price: she wants Hye Jung to help her get started on her dating Young Kook by sending Young Kook over to Sooni Hawaii. Hye Jung agrees, and so when Ji Hong’s at the gym, she calls and he tells her his password so she can head into his office. She’s just in the process of inputing the password when Yoon Do comes out of his office and spots her with the food. He asks when she would eat with him, grumbling that the promise is long overdue and Hye Jung asks him if he wants to eat lunch together. He’s immediately all smiles and happy and Hye Jung laughs at the transformation. She enters Ji Hong’s office and Yoon Do has to tell his heart to calm itself down. Ji Hong finally joins her and she sets to arranging the food in front of him. He digs in and when she tells him that she would be assisting in Chairman Hong’s surgery, he replies that he’s aware of that and then asks her if she was able to get Mal Soon’s anesthesia records. Hye Jung silently wonders how he’s able to worry about her with what he’s going through but says nothing about it though. She replies that the records have been scrapped and so she would be talking directly to the doctor who’d written the report. Ji Hong then asks her how she’s sure it’s a medical malpractice and Hye Jung replies that not only was the cancer not spreading, but it was stomach cancer which has a high level of success. Plus, it had been a table death which is rare in stomach cancer cases. Ji Hong asks about her parents and Hye Jung replies that they got paid and settled quickly. He then offers to help out and Hye Jung thinks to herself that he should take care of himself first. She firmly tells him no and then proceeds to ask him how many hours he sleeps per day. He tries to be vague and when she insists tells her he sleeps five hours a day and can sometimes spend the whole day lazing around in his bed. She asks him if he can multitask and he says that he can as he’s not like her, the woman who can only do one thing at a time (hahaha). She asks him if he’s happy and he replies that he is. He’s alive, eating a meal with the woman he likes. It all makes him happy. Hye Jung calls him a good and strong-willed man and he wonders what’s wrong (hahahaha. I would be worried if I was him as well). Hye Jung then gets a call from Yoon Do and she starts prepping everything she needs for surgery, although Kyung Joon’s suspicious because they don’t have any patients listed. Meanwhile, Myung Hoon’s assistant delivers the news that it was Chairman Hong who’d pulled Mal Soon’s records directly. He’s also told that Chairman Hong never went home the previous day and so he puts his assistant to work, locating the Chairman, all the while wondering since when the Chairman’s been tailing him (dude is just as self-absorbed as his daughter). And back at Ji Hong’s office, he pulls out Mal Soon’s records and places a call, asking to be connected to Chi Hyun.
3. The universe keeps trying to tell Yoon Do that he doesn’t have a chance and Seo Woo’s taking her bad behavior to new heights
Ji Hong pays a visit to Chairman Hong who’s delighted to see him even as he waits for his surgery. He tells Ji Hong that he’s reassured by Ji Hong’s presence and states that that’s the reason why people are advised to have children. Ji Hong smiles and then tells Chairman Hong that the doctors would soon be there to test him whilst he has to go visit his own patients. Those very doctors are on their way there at the moment and Ji Hong comes out of the room to see what looks like a moment where Hye Jung’s trying to catch her breath after running and Yoon Do pats her on the back. He tries to act all friendly and she calls him out on it. When he wonders if being friendly is a bad thing, she tells him that it is, then brightens (awwww) when she sees Ji Hong. Ji Hong suggests they have lunch together but Yoon Do immediately interrupts and reminds Hye Jung that they already have plans. Ji Hong then suggests dinner and Yoon Do butts in and asks Ji Hong to treat him to dinner for the successful completion of Chairman Hong’s surgery. Ji Hong tsks that Yoon Do’s trying too hard, but agrees. Yoon Do and Hye Jung then head into Chairman Hong’s office where he realizes that Hye Jung’s also close to the Chairman, what with the way she wants to go fishing with Chairman Hong (hahaha. Poor Yoon Do just can’t catch a break). Meanwhile, Sung Jong’s reporting to Myung Hoon that Chairman Hong’s in the VIP ward because he’s relapsed. He tells Myung Hoon that he won’t be going in to visit Chairman Hong because the Chairman seems to want to keep the surgery a secret so the board wouldn’t find out. Myung Hoon concludes that Tae Ho’s taking things too far and it would be good grounds they can use to get him removed as vice-president of the hospital. Except, Ji Hong’s given Tae Ho the go ahead to let the word out and soon everyone knows. After being reminded of his surgery and realizing that Hye Jung would be assisting in Chairman Hong’s surgery when he’s doing his, he has Young Kook inform Seo Woo that she would be scrubbing in on his surgery. Chairman Hong’s surgery has to be put on hold however, because of his high blood sugar level. Meanwhile, Young Kook delivers the good news to Seo Woo who’s surprised seeing that Ji Hong had stated that he wants her off his service for a while. When Young Kook tells her about Hye Jung assisting with Chairman Hong’s surgery, she immediately concludes that Hye Jung got the better surgery (seriously girl? Seriously?). Young Kook corrects her that Hye Jung was a better fit and Seo Woo’s all delighted to realize that her plan at being wicked is succeeding (you’re not really wicked at this point sweetie. That read more like an eight grader being jealous that the girl she doesn’t like is elected the class representative). But she does learn to be wicked when Kang Soo unwittingly spills the beans about Hye Jung accepting the foreign car from the boss. She immediately places a call to hospital management to report this breach of hospital policy (well would you look at that. Wonder why she ever thought herself good when it’s the same crap she pulled in high school she’s pulling right now).
4. Myung Hoon remains utterly shameless and his father’s no different
Myung Hoon walks with Seo Woo who confirms that she’s traveling for the neurosurgery conference in Jeju. He laughs, delighted that even though he’s an ass to Tae Ho, Tae Ho still likes Seo Woo (it’s not really the case of like and more of he’s fair. There’s a difference). Almost immediately Tae Ho shows up and he and Myung Hoon retreat to Myung Hoon’s office where the latter gives false platitude about his concern for Chairman Hong’s health. He asks if Tae Ho needs anything to pull it off and Tae Ho gives an internal sigh even as he thinks to himself that he’s putting up a front but Myung Hoon’s really something. Tae Ho thanks Myung Hoon for his offer and tells him that he doesn’t need any help. He leaves and Myung Hoon chuckles to himself as he states that they’ve still got the ball in their court. Meanwhile, Sung Jong pays a visit to Chairman Hong, cookie in hand. Chairman Hong asks how he’s doing and Sung Jong replies that it’s just a punch, and there’s no big deal to it. Chairman Hong then admits to knowing about the Jin’s slush fund and states that he’d been hoping Myung Hoon would step down, but he’s blown his chance. Sung Jong replies that Chairman Hong can do whatever he wants but he should consider their friendship and give him the information he has on the slush fund (don’t listen to him Chairman Hong. Don’t give him jack shit). He continues that it’s time for Chairman Hong to get some rest and let Ji Hong take over. He even volunteers to help Ji Hong, and with that, he walks away.
5. Hye Jung’s a master at doling out rejection and Myung Hoon continues to sink to new lows
Yoon Do meets with Hye Jung for their agreed lunch at the cafeteria. She’s quiet and he wonders if that’s how she usually is or if it’s just him. The words have her smiling and he smiles right back, telling her that he did tell her that he could be funny if he set his mind to it. He reminds her of when he’d told her that he sees her as a woman and wonders why her guard is up. When he brings up Ji Hong, Hye Jung tries to caution him about the conversation not being suited to lunch, but when Yoon Do presses anyway, she comes out and tells him that she doesn’t believe in romantic love. But if she must be in love, then she will choose Ji Hong (damn. Happy for Ji Hong, but poor Yoon Do). She finishes the speech by apologizing and Yoon Do tries to force a smile as he thanks her for not having bad thoughts about him. Meanwhile, at the nurses’ station, Soo Jin gets a call from internal affairs for Hye Jung. Having correctly guessed that it’s about the car, she wails that it’s her and Kang Soo’s fault and although Kang Soo tries to get out of it, Kyung Joon pushes and Kang Soo has to run to inform Hye Jung about internal affairs wanting to see her. She heads in and the man mentions that they’d heard she’d received a car from one of the patients. Hye Jung replies that she didn’t collect the car and has been trying to send it back. Except, there’s a picture of the crashed car, confirming that the car’s been driven. Hye Jung replies that she wasn’t the one driving the car and shows him a picture of her sports car as she states that she doesn’t need to covet the car the mobster boss had given her. When she asks the internal affairs man to just let the issue go, the man replies that he would have to talk to the rest of his team (crap. Crap). Ji Hong, who’s totally unaware of Hye Jung’s troubles at this point prints out a DNR form as he remembers Chairman Hong asking that he not be resuscitated in the OR should he flatline (no!!!! I don’t even want to think about this. How can you do this Ji Hong? And to Hye Jung too? Especially when you know how badly this is going to affect her Hye Jung. I hope you give her enough heads-up so she can prepare herself). Whilst Ji Hong heads to Chairman Hong’s room where Chairman Hong signs the DNR form and Ji Hong signs it as well, Sung Jong informs Myung Hoon about Chairman Hong’s knowledge of the slush fund. He drops the flash drive containing the information (Chairman Hong. You’d better have stored those files in the cloud) and tells Myung Hoon that he’s bought them some time by offering that Myung Hoon step down, all so they can have enough time whilst Chairman Hong is recovering, to get rid of the evidence. Myung Hoon insists on not stepping down and expresses his wish that Chairman Hong die in surgery (why you trash. Absolute and complete trash). Myung Hoon snaps at him for thinking such thoughts and Myung Hoon whines that he’s angry (I don’t give a fuck. If your bad karma affects Chairman Hong then I shall be willing that the writer write a cancer into your storyline. Entitled piece of shit).
6. Chairman Hong’s surgery is a success (what a relief)
The next morning, both Ji Hong and Chairman Hong take turns grilling Yoon Do about how he should carry out the surgery and how he needs to be careful of the nerves (hahahaha). It’s so cute that Hye Jung laughs and when Chairman Hong wonders what’s funny, Hye Jung admits that he and Ji Hong are perfect together. Her words please Chairman Hong who then takes the moment to once again attempt to teach Yoon Do about a surgeon needing a strong heart and flexible hands. Ji Hong then interrupts to warn Yoon Do to do a good job, otherwise Chairman Hong will wake up mid-surgery to take over (hahahahaha). And then Tae Ho joins them to check on the Chairman, and gets roped into singing an upbeat song as per Chairman Hong’s request. Outside of Chairman Hong’s room however, Tae Ho and Ji Hong are sober as Ji Hong informs Tae Ho that he won’t be watching the surgery but would instead be in the waiting area where members of the family usually are. He tells Tae Ho to go in and view the surgery, except, Tae Ho’s definition of viewing the surgery involves him attempting to direct Yoon Do on what he should do. Yoon Do finally gets tired of it and tells him that he can just as easily come and do the surgery himself if that’s what he wants. Tae Ho’s pissed and Yoon Do replies that he can’t continue operating under the circumstances. The words finally get Tae Ho to calm down and butt out of Yoon Do’s surgery. The rest of the surgery goes well and soon, both Hye Jung and then Tae Ho and Yoon Do come out to give Ji Hong the good news (whew! I was so worried for a moment there). As per his promise, Ji Hong offers to buy Yoon Do a meal.
7. Hye Jung keeps her promise to Soon Hee
After getting a call from Young Kook about a patient, Hye Jung, remembering Soon Hee’s extracted promise heads to the residents lounge where Young Kook’s at with Joong Dae. She tries to get Joong Dae to leave the room by sending him on different errands. Joong Dae however is utterly clueless and has doesn’t get the social cues. Young Kook figures it out though and tells Hye Jung to just spill it. She stumbles over her words as she blurts out that her friend owns Sooni Hawaii and she would really appreciate it if they patronize the place. She then takes off running, leaving Young Kook and Doong Jae to comment on how charming and adorable she is ( 🙂 She is isn’t she?).
8. Seo Woo’s all talk except when she’s goes back to her roots of feeding everyone lies and poison (what trash)
Things are a bit awkward between Hye Jung and Yoon Do after the surgery until he points out that they can still be friends even though he got rejected. He’s just about mentioning how he’d closed the wounds by his abrupt comments at lunch when the elevator doors ding open and they see Seo Woo and Young Kook inside. It’s then the most awkward elevator ride ever until Seo Woo breaks the silence by asking if Yoon Do’s all better now that he’s stomped all over her heart. She tells Hye Jung that Yoon Do’s human trash who is willing to put up with anything from her, except for her slapping him across the face. Hye Jung finally reaches her floor and gets out of dodge, and Yoon Do whose sense of self-preservation is high gets off along with her. Hye Jung sighs as she realizes that Seo Woo really would set out to frustrate her and she wonders why Yoon Do can’t just like Seo Woo who’s really pretty. Yoon Do tosses the question back at her, asking why she just can’t like him as well (touche). He admits that he’s aware that Seo Woo’s put her in an awkward position but they shouldn’t be selfish. Alone in the elevator with Young Kook, Seo Woo declares that she will be a femme fatale and Young Kook says the exact same words Yoon Do had told her: people who are, never alert others first. But Seo Woo’s convinced that she’s already set things in motion (I’m betting she’s referring to the call to internal affairs. Little snitch). And things are really rolling well for the snitch as internal affairs calls Tae Ho to ask him to be present at Hye Jung’s disciplinary hearing. Ji Hong who’s with Tae Ho when he receives the call heads to the man and wonders why things are being carried to such great lengths and the man admits that Seo Woo’s the one that’s pushing (of course it’s her. Such a bitch). Hye Jung meets with Tae Ho who gives her a heads-up about the disciplinary hearing. He also warns her to expect either a pay cut or a suspension. But of course, the worse case scenario is that she will be kicked out (which I’m sure will be what bitch Seo Woo will be pushing for. This girl… I can’t even….Argh!)
9. A hint of friction and the start of a possible bromance?
After leaving Tae Ho’s office, Hye Jung runs into Ji Hong who tells her that he can always attend the disciplinary hearing as a board member and tells her not to worry. Hye Jung’s not worried since she has no plans of staying at Kookil forever. Ji Hong praises her on her right thinking and Hye Jung asks if he’s really alright with everything she does. Ji Hong replies that he likes everything about her and Hye Jung points out how unrealistic that is, explaining that even relationships between parents and their children are vulnerable to fighting. Ji Hong doesn’t understand why she’s trying to debate things with him and Hye Jung just replies that it’s nothing and walks away (but that look in her eyes though. They scream that something IS wrong). Over at the nurses’ station, Soo Jin tells Kang Soo that Hye Jung’s facing disciplinary action because of what they’d done and whilst they’re wailing about it, Kyung Joon goes back to his Hye Jung deserves it speech. Except, Yoon Do catches him gossiping and then he has to tell Yoon Do about Hye Jung’s disciplinary hearing. Yoon Do runs into Ji Hong and brings up the hearing. Ji Hong’s already in the know however and Yoon Do’s impressed. He also mentions that he got rejected and notes that Ji Hong doesn’t seem surprised. Ji Hong reminds him of how long he’s known Hye Jung and she still hasn’t agreed to be his girlfriend and Yoon Do praises Ji Hong on his patience (hahahaha. Cute). He tells Ji Hong though that he would continue to like Hye Jung, although he wouldn’t pressure her and when he sees his opportunity to swoop in, he will take it. He then tries to get Ji Hong to treat him and help him deal with his rejection. But Ji Hong turns him down, explaining that he has plans. Plans turn out to be a meeting with Chi Hyun who’s delighted to have dinner with the Chairman’s son. Meanwhile, Kang Soo uploads yet another chapter of his webtoon, this one based on Hye Jung’s car-bribe issues and explains in the post that he had no idea that such a crisis would befall her.
10. Hye Jung and Ji Hong are at an impasse
Chi Hyun and Ji Hong finally get to talking about the reason why Ji Hong called for the meeting and when Ji Hong produces Mal Soon’s medical records to ask about what happened in the surgery, Chi Hyun’s noticeably uncomfortable. He brings up Hye Jung and asks Ji Hong what his relationship with Hye Jung is and Ji Hong lies that he doesn’t know her but instead was close to Mal Soon. Chi Hyun then feigns like he can’t remember anything. The next morning, Chi Hyun’s pissed to see Hye Jung outside his office again and when she brings up Mal Soon’s surgery, Chi Hyun brings up Ji Hong and asks if they’re working together. He scoffs at Hye Jung talking about seeking justice when she’s using Ji Hong to threaten him into talking. Hye Jung merely replies that she will keep coming back until Chi Hyun spills and Chi Hyun growls in frustration after she’s gone. A very pissed Hye Jung then goes to meet Ji Hong and she asks him why he’d interfered, especially when she’d specifically told him that it was her battle to fight. We then cut away from them to Chi Hyun calling Myung Hoon to inform him that now that Ji Hong’s gotten into the matter, he intends to come clean to Hye Jung because he’d rather get sued that get on the Chairman’s bad side. Myung Hoon is then left to wonder why exactly Ji Hong’s getting involved in the matter. Meanwhile, Ji Hong and Hye Jung have taken their fight out of his office and are now outside where Ji Hong wonders why Hye Jung’s so angry. He explains that them working together will make things get resolved faster and compares their working together with what she would have done with Soon Hee. But then Hye Jung asks him why he’s keeping things from her then. He hadn’t told her about the tax investigation or about Chairman Hong’s health problems which she’d had to hear from someone else. She asks who she is to him and Ji Hong explains that he’d kept the issues from her because he didn’t want her to worry. Hye Jung tosses it right back that she didn’t want him to suffer, which is why she hadn’t told him about her issues. Ji Hong replies that he isn’t suffering and Hye Jung cries that she isn’t suffering either so why wouldn’t he confide in her? Ji Hong explains that he’s never shared his worries with anyone before and so he’s developed a bad habit of making all his decisions on his own (and that ladies and gentlemen is what we call hypocrisy. Imagine trying to get Hye Jung to break her habit of handling things on her own when he’s himself guilty of doing the same thing). He tells Hye Jung that it has nothing to do with her and Hye Jung tears up as she replies that it does, especially if they’re going to start afresh as a man and a woman. She continues that he’d tried so hard to get her to agree to them doing things together and yet he won’t break his own habit? She asks him if he thinks that’s love and corrects him that that’s just burdening each other. She tells him that she has no interest in that kind of love and then walks away. As she leaves, she tells us that in the past, Ji Hong made her want to become a good person. But being a good person and being a good partner in a relationship are two different things.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Sure he’s the resident puppy but in this particular moment, he was the resident idiot. He doesn’t realize the weight of his words especially when he’s aware that Hye Jung didn’t accept the car and has been trying to send it back? Seriously? And then he blurts it out, and then states that he doesn’t care that the supposed car is a bribe that goes against hospital policy, all because he wants the situation fixed so he won’t have to fix the car? I wanted to bitchslap him so hard at this moment. Dude, you’d better redeem yourself in the next episode and get Hye Jung out of her disciplinary problems, otherwise, I would never forgive you.
Headache inducing moment:
Because this is one of the situations in which the road to hell is paved with good intentions saying, is apt. Because the minute he decided to go behind Hye Jung’s back to meet with Chi Hyun, I knew it was going to backfire. Urgh! Seriously though Ji Hong. What were you thinking?
This episode’s a Whiskey Sour. Sure there’s the excitement with Hye Jung kicking ass and taking no prisoners; telling Yoon Do straight out that she’s not interested in him and trying in her own way to offer comfort to Ji Hong and sure Ji Hong’s adorable with his cute smiles and Yoon Do’s an adorable Siberian Husky with a soft underbelly and sharp teeth when it’s called for, but I kept screaming at the Jins who continue to lie and manipulate and get away with it. Seriously, this family frustrates me to no end. How has everyone not died on their watch? With one doctor wishing that a patient die in surgery and another one claiming that another doctor got the interesting cases? But I still love this episode with its development and this new wrench in the works for Hye Jung and Ji Hong’s relationship because Ji Hong is giving to smiling his way through life without necessarily showing his weaknesses or his underbelly. He wants Hye Jung vulnerable when he’s not willing to be as vulnerable himself and I’m positively thrilled that Hye Jung called him out on it. The ball’s now in your court Ji Hong. You can either man up and let yourself become as vulnerable as you want Hye Jung to be or you let our girl walk away because the line of men waiting for just a chance with her is long. Very long. But trust me, if you take your chances and open up, your relationship will be even more of an equal one and so beautifully supportive we will all be tearing up.
