A couple of drops in the water are disturbing the currents and creating rippling changes that has Young Oh feeling things he can’t quite put a name on yet. Jin Sung’s still hellbent on people doing the right thing and when her idol shatters the image of perfection she’s built, it’s Young Oh who offers her comfort in his own way and it’s a beautiful, beautiful thing to see.
The Episode in 10 Moments:
- Suk Joo wants to be different from his father and Young Oh flirts with Ji Sung (I doubt if he knows that’s what it’s called though)
We open on a younger Suk Joo playing basketball with a friend: Chang Soo, when Chang Soo suddenly collapses after clutching at his heart. Next we see Suk Joo barging into a mansion to demand that the Chairman pay restitution for the damages a factor worker had suffered. The chairman turns out to be his father, but daddy dearest is cold and unfeeling as he states that Chang Soo was unlucky. Plus, if Chang Soo continues to pursue the action, the company would sue him. Suk Joo’s mother tries to get him to have dinner with them but Suk Joo declares that he will never again sit in the house for fear of going blind himself. He makes to leave but his father tells him that in a battle, the people with the warmest hearts die first. He states that Suk Joo, who’s his son and used to having everything, will one day pick up a gun and fire it with all his might. Suk Joo vows to never become his father. We then return to the present with Hyun Joon’s father being wheeled into the hospital. Hyun Joon’s pissed because of all the times for his father to collapse, he chose that moment (Ha! So he’s not distressed because his father is unconscious but rather because there’s the possibility his father won’t be able to see him rise to the worthy position of his successor). Meanwhile, Young Oh leaves the gym where he turns down a hot girl in his brusque Young Oh manner and purposefully seeks out Ji Sung who’s surprised to see him whilst Young Oh gives an airy “Fancy seeing you here” reply (hahahaha. Yeah right). Ji Sung points out that it’s her zone and he’d broken traffic laws and Young Oh stays silent for a moment, only to repeat her question and ask if that’s what she thinks. She denies it, then wonders why he’s not working hard at getting back into Hyunsung hospital. He tells her he has no plans of working at getting back to Hyunsung and states that should she be interested in what his plans are, she should give him a call (hahaha. I love this new Young Oh. Love him!). She calls him immediately as per his words and he asks her if she’s eaten yet (yeah Young Oh. Take her out on a date. You know you want to).
2. Throwing in a subtle threat and Jin Sung wants a drink
Soon Ho checks the Chairman’s scans and asks the various departments what’s wrong with him. None of them have any clear answers although Min Jae’s answer is cut off by Jang Bae who speaks over her (girl, I don’t feel sorry for you. Not one bit) and gives a recommended treatment option. Soon Ho delivers the news to Hyun Joon but when he smiles as he speaks, Hyun Joon immediately gets pissed stating that he’s worried his father might not wake up in time to name him his successor, or that it might be discovered that Soon Ho, a man he greatly admires had committed a horrible murder and has to get locked up for the rest of his life. Soon Ho just stays calm as he reminds Hyun Joon that he’s been the Chairman’s doctor for years and he knows the Chairman would recover, they would get the FDA approval and everything will go swimmingly well. Meanwhile, Young Oh’s with Jin Sung who asks if the serial murder case can’t be reopened, considering they know that Min Chul’s secret doctor is at Hyunsung. Young Oh asks why she can be so reckless, stating that everyone else wants the truth buried and yet, there she is, a traffic cop who wants to take on Hyunsung. Ji Sung heads to the fridge, pulls out a bottle of Soju and replies that it’s because she wants a drink, the drink that Dong Jae had promised to have with her after they uncover the truth. Dong Jae didn’t pass away through an unfortunate accident and she intends to let the rest of the world know so she can enjoy her drink again. Young Oh asks her what she intends to do and she replies that she will start from scratch. When Young Oh points out that that didn’t work out the first time and besides, the world isn’t ready for the truth, Jin Sung smiles as she says she will give the world a chance then, so she can enjoy drinking again. Young Oh then asks that they make a bet. He pulls out Dr. Shim’s flash drive and states that in it is the lead Jin Sung’s looking for, and the secret Dong Jae wanted to expose. The bet therefore is, will Jin Sung win or will he. But, she can’t read the details on the flash herself as she has to have someone with medical expertise to explain things to her. This person will be someone she’ll be calling, bothering and meeting with everyday (hahaha. He says it almost so hopefully. So cute. And Jin Sung has no idea he’s attempting to flirt with her). Jin Sung then brings up his reason for deciding not to return to Hyunsung and he corrects her that he didn’t say he wouldn’t return to Hyunsung. What he said was that he wouldn’t work hard at returning to Hyunsung because they’re the ones who will come to him.
3. Hyun Joon needs time and Min Jae sees her chance and takes it
Over at Hyunsung, the Chairman gets worse and Jang Bae enters the room just as Min Jae’s attending to him. Min Jae points out that Jang Bae had misdiagnosed the Chairman and they should run some more tests but Jang Bae’s convinced she wouldn’t know anything, with her being an inexperienced lab rat whose sole purpose had been to write papers. Min Jae simply replies that her diagnosis is that the Chairman has a tumor and she intends to tell Hyun Joon herself. This starts off another round of arguments and the Chairman’s security team come running in when his stats go haywire as the Chairman goes into an insulin shock. Turns out Jang Bae had misdiagnosed and the news is all over the hospital. Hyun Joon of course doesn’t share this information with his brother who calls about their father’s condition. Instead, he states that their father’s in Hyunsung, a hospital renowned for having the best doctors and so their father will be on his way to being fully recovered in a month. He stops and corrects his brother that it’s his brother who wants their father to kick the bucket. He on the other hand wants their father to live because he needs more time to make Hyunsung his. He calls his brother a slimeball who nags then shows his assistant that his brother had hung up a long time ago and he’d just been speaking into an unconnected phone (hahahaha). Meanwhile, Min Jae meets with Suk Joo to ask for his help with regards the tumor, stating that although he’s nice, he’s like her in that they have to fight the disrespect, oppression and discrimination (you mean all those things you did to Young Oh in one fell swoop?) in the system. She starts to go on that that’s what she’s fighting against but Suk Joo doesn’t have time for her attempts at being chummy and reminds her that she said she wanted to talk about the Chairman. She shows him the scans and asks for his help. At the doctor’s meeting, whilst Soon Ho’s berating Jang Bae for his incompetence and hitting Jung Hwan for claiming that none of the doctors want to readily give a diagnosis they’re unsure of, for fair of harming the Chairman, Min Jae speaks up that the Chairman could have lung cancer. The problem though is that the tumor’s hiding somewhere they can’t easily notice it. Soon Ho’s not interested in playing find-the-tumor especially because the Chairman is nearing eighty and could even die just from his chest being opened alone. Suk Joo then jumps in and states that they can simply get rid of the tumor without opening the Chairman’s chest. Hyun Joon hears this and asks Soon Ho if he can trust Soon Ho this time around. Soon Ho agrees.
4. The surgery’s a success and Suk Joo finds his way of bringing Young Oh back
The surgery involves drilling a hole into the Chairman and then using a probe to try and locate the tumor to be extracted. As they all look in on the surgery, Hyun Joon expresses his wish that the Chairman be well and recovered before his brother returns to Korea whilst Soon Ho flashes back to when he’d confronted Suk Joo, amazed that Suk Joo agreed to help treat the Chairman. Suk Joo wonders if Soon Ho really doesn’t know what why he’s doing it and Soon Ho returns back to the present where Chairman Kang’s BP is acting up and everyones worried. But, Suk Joo’s able to locate the tumor and extract it, and the Chairman’s stats stabilize. Soon Ho then flashes back to the tail end of the conversation where Suk Joo had replied that the only thing that concerns him, is his patient’s wellbeing. The surgery’s a success and it’s all over the news report which informs the world about the Chairman’s lung cancer. Young Oh ignores the news report as he shops for new clothes at the brand shop that all the Kangs (Hyun Joon, his brothers and the Chairman himself) shop at. Whilst that’s happening, Soon Ho congratulates Suk Joo on the successful surgery although Suk Joo isn’t interested in his congratulations, and the Chairman, who’s now conscious, isn’t impressed at being healed at Hyunsung, claiming that he’s sure that Hyun Joon would use it as an opportunity to brag (okay then. I take it daddy dearest would rather have died of lung cancer then). He wonders if Hyun Joon had thought to use the opportunity to be named his successor and states that all Hyun Joon had done was play away his life and refuse to have kids because of the inconvenience. He sends Hyun Joon off to get him water but when he makes to stand up from the hospital bed he collapses. And just as Suk Joo’s telling Soon Ho that they might have been able to take out the tumor but they’re not out of the woodworks yet, Shi Hyun comes to deliver the news of the Chairman’s collapse. They rush to the Chairman’s bedside and whilst Hyun Joon’s panicking that they must do something to save the Chairman, Suk Joo speaks to their only hope: Young Oh. Everyone’s all up in arms about why Young Oh can’t come back but Suk Joo reminds Hyun Joon that he doesn’t have that much time and Young Oh’s his only option left. Gun Myung points out that Young Oh’s too dangerous and Suk Joo replies that he might be dangerous, but he will save the patient’s life. The words, combined with his assistant informing him that his brother’s arrived at the airport and is on his way to the hospital, seals the deal and has Hyun Joon demanding that they call Young Oh over immediately.
5. Young Oh makes his return
Young Oh heads to Hyunsung in his spiffy new suit and as Gun Myung waits in his office, he flashes back to when Young Oh had returned home and told him that he’s returning to Hyunsung and even if Gun Myung objects to it, there’s nothing Gun Myung can do about it because the hospital needs him. Over at Hyun Joon’s office, Hyun Joon wonders why Young Oh came to see him first when he’s sure Young Oh’s very much aware about what’s going on with his father, what with all the news. Young Oh though, points out that Hyun Joon had been the one to call him to his office and he reiterates his request to wait to speak until Hyun Joon’s brother is also present. When it’s just himself, the Chairman and the two brothers in the room, Young Oh brings up the problem: the Chairman has a hereditary disease which he’d passed on to his sons. Both men have started exhibiting symptoms and rather than come out to tell the doctors exactly what is happening, they’ve kept the the disease to themselves. The words have the brothers shifting uncomfortably as Hyun Joon denies that there’s anything wrong with him. Young Oh applauds their insistence on keeping to their farce and points out that soon, their father would be dead and all his money and power would not have been able to save him from dying in the very same hospital he owns because his sons refuse to admit to their illnesses. Hyun Joon’s brother won’t bite though and declares that he intends to take their father to the States’ the next day so he can be treated by physicians of a higher caliber than Young Oh, and immediately, he walks away with his entourage. Young Oh calls it what it is though: Hyun Joon’s brother has made a stand and is willing to let their father die because he’s content with him succeeding his father with the number of shares they currently have. Hyun Joon though, Young Oh states, can’t afford to take that chance. He counts to five and Hyun Joon stomps over to his father’s bedside. Young Oh won’t let it go though as he speaks to his suspicion that Hyun Joon is turning into a woman. Hyun Joon scoffs at his words and Young Oh shrugs that the Chairman will then die without knowing what’s going on in his body, whilst Hyun Joon will live like a woman and die like a woman. The words have Hyun Joon agreeing and asking Young Oh to save his father. Young Oh agrees, but on the condition that he’s rehired and returned to his original post.
6. Hyun Joon’s been played
Whilst the other doctors are amazed at how Young Oh got his position back, and discussing exactly what the nature of the Chairman’s illness is, Young Oh subjects Hyun Joon to tests and explains to him that the Chairman’s tumor that’s the root cause of the Familial isolated pituitary adenoma that has his and his father’s body going through their changes, is small and so no one would have noticed it. When he mentions Hyun Joon getting the disease, Hyun Joon cuts in to ask how Young Oh figured it out. Turns out that Young Oh had noticed that Hyun Joon never showered with the others when he went to they gym, plus Hyun Joon’s chest size has been increasing (thanks to Young Oh’s visit to Hyun Joon’s tailor). He’d also noticed that Hyun Joon had lost sight in his peripheral vision and was also reading up on his illness. Young Oh then states that he would be removing the tumors on the Chairman and Hyun Joon simultaneously. Hyun Joon then brings up his brother and Young Oh admits that Hyun Joon’s brother most likely didn’t have the disease but Young Oh had merely made it seem like he was hiding something so Hyun Joon would feel alright with divulging the information. When Hyun Joon gets mad, Young Oh reminds him that he’s a psychopath who gets what he wants by all means, without caring for other people’s pain and suffering. He pulls out his phone, states that they look alike and has Hyun Joon smile for the camera.
7. Giving Gun Myung a reason
Young Oh meets with Gun Myung to ask him to operate on the Chairman. Gun Myung gives his trademark answer that neither the ethics council nor himself gave Young Oh the permission to return and states that Young Oh can’t perform the surgery. Young Oh is well aware that he can’t perform the surgery which is why he wants Gun Myung to do it instead, figuring that Gun Myung needs a good enough reason so it doesn’t seem like he disobeyed the Chairman to get him reinstated, but instead, he had to do so for the wellbeing of the patient who needed surgery. And that’s why Gun Myung will have him reinstated. He reminds Gun Myung that he’d already said he would return to Hyunsung and Gun Myung won’t be able to stop him. Next thing we see, Gun Myung’s operating on the chairman whilst Young Oh’s operating on Hyun Joon. After the surgery, Gun Myung meets with Young Oh to tell him that he was right and all he’d needed was a reason. He does warn Young Oh though, to never again use a patient to achieve his purpose.
8. The Chairman’s all about the money, money, money
Hyun Joon wakes up to find himself in the same hospital room as the Chairman who states that he heard that Hyun Joon has the same disease as him and it was because of Hyun Joon that the doctors were able to properly diagnose and operate on him. He calls Hyun Joon to come closer to him and whispers that that’s why he’s never approved of Hyun Joon because had he been Hyun Joon, he would have realized that they could make money off the disease (what the? Seriously?). He tells Hyun Joon to tell his brother to prepare to start a bioinformatics business. The Chairman’s then wheeled out and Hyun Joon’s joined by Soon Ho who tells him that there’s nothing to worry about as the Chairman’s surgery went well. Hyun Joon asks if they’ve gotten the FDA approval as he intends to prove himself to the Chairman by commercializing their research.
9. Min Jae comes looking for Young Oh and Suk Joo loses Ji An
The medical person Jin Sung ends up meeting with the files is Suk Joo (Seriously though girl. Young Oh was hoping you’ll come to him instead). She asks if it’s enough to reopen the case and Suk Joo replies that it only shows that the people were victims of the clinical trial. What they can do however is make it public so Hyunsung has to answer to the public and the police can reopen the case. Jin Sung then hands over the flash drive to Suk Joo who heads to the regenerative research center where Ki Ho tells him the good news: that their third stage trials have been successful. The news has Suk Joo stunned and even as Ki Ho’s celebrating that all they have to do left to do is to get FDA approval and they can put their research to the market, Suk Joo walks away. He then gets a call that has him running to Ji An’s room where the little girl’s gone into arrest. Meanwhile, Young Oh runs into Min Jae who wonders if she should congratulate him or welcome him (girl, how about you just keep your fucking mouth shut). She expresses her surprise that he’s back in the hospital after having figured out that the Young Oh she knows wouldn’t have been to treat patients anymore, or read body signals either. She asks him if anything happened and Young Oh merely extends his hand in a handshake. When she doesn’t accept it, he walks away (good for you Young Oh). At that exact moment, he gets a call from Jin Sung who thanks him for the file and promises to show him that the world really does care for the truth. As Young Oh watches a desperate Jin Sung try to bring Ji An back to life, he tells her that he hopes she wins the bet. Suk Joo continues to get more desperate in trying to save Ji An and when he pulls out a scalpel to operate, and Kyung Soo has to stop him to let him know that it’s too late and Suk Joo should let Ji An go as she’s already suffered enough, the words snap Suk Joo back into reality and he breaks down in tears at the realization. He heads to his office wall where he’s put up pictures of himself and his friends and flashes back to his conversation with Yoon Kyung and Dong Jae. As the memories flood his mind, he slides down to the floor in misery.
10. Suk Joo sells out
A press conference is called and Suk Joo, looking pretty snazzy in a suit, informs the reporters that they’ve succeeded in regenerating myocardial cells. One of the reporters ask if all the clinical tests were successful and Suk Joo replies that they achieved results that got their patient’s attention with the stage two and three trials. Also, they’ve successfully passed the FDA criteria without any problems. Young Oh watches the news report in the hospital whilst Jin Sung sees it whilst she’s carrying working the traffic beat. She immediately comes running to Hyunsung where she meets Suk Joo at the conference room. As Young Oh watches them, she confronts Suk Joo stating that she’d started investigating the murders so she could either catch the murderer or the one behind the murders so Dong Jae’s death would not have been in vain. Suk Joo replies that the fact is that Dong Jae died due to an accident caused by Yoon Kyung the drug addict. He states that that’s the root cause of everything that’s happened at Hyunsung and then leaves. Young Oh claps and Jin Sung fighting back tears tells him that that’s not what she’d wanted to show him. She makes to leave but Young Oh pulls her back and reminds her that she knows he’s not interested in what she’s thinking or feeling and that he can’t empathize with her either. So, she should take it that he doesn’t exist and feel free to cry as much as she wants to. He sits her down, sits down right beside her and Jin Sung gives in to the tears (awww. That’s so sad and romantic all at once).
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
No one in this episode.
Headache inducing moment:
This episode’s a Boulevardier, delicious, fine, sweet, complex and with that slightly bitter twist to it because poor Jin Sung. It’s so sad when your image of your idol, the one person you’d always believed would do the right thing no matter what, shatters. But it’s also beautiful, because Young Oh’s slowly opening up to feeling emotions and he doesn’t know it, and he might not be able to empathize but he treats her sorrow and her pain with the purest of reverence and understanding. Young Oh the psychopath is an amazingly complex and ultimately beautiful man.
