This episode’s all Young Oh, how the people in his life have written him off and how the strangers who should be the last people to believe in him, end up doing so. It’s a beautiful transition from brokenness to self-discovery and no one has us as invested in him reclaiming the title of Doctor Lee Young Oh as much as Lee Young Oh himself.
The Episode in 10 Moments:
- Young Oh’s always wanted to feel and Suk Joo offers a challenge
We open on younger Young Oh staring at new parents in the nursery. Gun Myung explains that that’s what a family looks like and soon Young Oh must also carry through with that tradition so he can appear normal. Young Oh in return asks Gun Myung if he really can live like other people if he tries harder, if he’ll one day feel emotions rather than pretend to feel them. Gun Myung hadn’t answered him then and Young Oh had looked wistfully back at the happy couple (Young Oh, that looks like feelings there). We cut to the present where the news is all about Hyunsung’s succession battle and who will be the Chairman’s successor. The news has Hyun Joon calling Myung Soo so he can push to have their stem cell research approved by the FDA, faster than was already planned. Myung Soo’s cautious about rushing things because it’s a matter of the health of the nation which could eventually affect his presidency. But health to Hyun Joon is the driving mechanism that would have him named as his father’s successor. The words get through to Myung Soo who promises to have things sorted in a week. Hyun Joon’s pleased as he figures that with Young Oh gone as well, there’s no other obstacle in his way. He’s speaking too soon though because Suk Joo is meeting with Ki Ho and explaining the side effects of their stem cell research. Ki Ho it turns out is already aware but has been ignoring it because he’s now battling a divorce and admitting that their research is flawed will make all that sacrifice feel like a waste. Ki Ho leaves and Soon Ho walks in tsking that it’s hard to talk to kids and the only time they’ll get it is if you tell them straight. He then turns to Suk Joo to state that the their testing was perfect and the world would be amazed at what they’ve been able to achieve. Suk Joo replies that the world would definitely be surprised by what they’ve been able to accomplish and Soon Ho tells him that he can live with his suspicions but Suk Joo can’t accomplish anything because he lacks evidence and witnesses.
2. Min Jae’s feeling pretty confident and Jin Sung brings Young Oh home
Remembering Young Oh’s words to him about the lesions and whether Suk Joo really thinks he’s a good doctor, Suk Joo tries to get Young Oh’s contact information from Moon Kyung, but Min Jae joins him at the nurses’ station and tells him not to bother because Young Oh’s never coming back (bitch, shut your mouth) to Hyunsung or to any other hospital for that matter because his perfect image of himself was shattered in front of his patient. She tells Suk Joo not to waste his time and when Suk Joo catches up with her before she can head into her office to ask her for Young Oh’s address anyway, she replies that the hospital is Young Oh’s hiding place and she’s sorry but she can’t be of any help (then bitch, your ass should have shut the fuck up). Young Oh wakes up in a strange room, feeling hot as he tries to piece things together. Turns out that he’s in Jin Sung’s family home. Outside the room, Jin Sung’s getting teased by her brother who assumes that she’s brought Young Oh home in order to make a statement and land herself a boyfriend. When her brother starts to tease her about the fact she’s never been kissed and has a ten year crush on Suk Joo, Jin Sung starts to spray him with the hose. She accidentally douses Young Oh with water and when he grumbles about her bringing him to her house and covering him with blankets, Jin Sung’s mother storms off and Young Oh has no idea what he’s said wrong (hahaha. Sweetie, telling her that she put you to bed at a time when you weren’t fully conscious isn’t something a mother wants to hear).
3. Jin Sung’s mother is pretty progressive and Young Oh’s still broken
Jin Sung’s mother comes around whilst they’re doing laundry together and states loudly that she gets along with the age and knows that couples do stuff like that (hahaha). Young Oh doesn’t reply so she makes sure to add that it’s alright as long as they end up marrying anyway (hahahaha. And the best part, Young Oh has no idea what she’s implying). Jin Sung tries to convince her mother that it’s not like her mother thinks but her brother comes racing along with their neighbor who’s on a wheelchair, as he asks Young Oh to take a look at her. Young Oh’s distracted with his doctor’s gown whilst Jin Sung’s brother calls their neighbor’s mother-in-law the witch that’s responsible for it. Turns out the woman had wheeled her daughter-in-law out into the middle of the road and had left her there. They call out to Young Oh who finally turns to look at the woman. Except, he hears Gun Myung’s voice in his head, stating the reason why he can’t be a good doctor. He also remembers the horrified expressions on the faces of the doctors at Hyunsung and although he walks to the paralyzed woman to study her, he says nothing and just walks away. Ji Sung runs to meet him and so isn’t there when the neighbor’s mother-in-law comes to make a scene, calling her daughter-in-law a property she can use and treat anyway she can. When Ji Sung’s brother protests the act and calls it abuse, she throws a tantrum and wheels her daughter-in-law away.
4. Jin Sung offers Young Oh a challenge
Jin Sung hurries after Young Oh and begins to babble, apologizing for her brother’s behavior and attributing it to a communal lifestyle that they have in the countryside. Young Oh wonders if that’s why she’d brought him to her house, hoping to heal him with the power of their ‘communal’ lifestyle. Jin Sung though had only brought him because she wanted him to be somewhere where people won’t look at him differently. She tells him that she’d only done that because she wanted to help but Young Oh believes she’d done it to prove a point: that she’s better off than him. He tells her that people always want confirmation and comfort when others are in pain and that love, friendship and pity are nothing more than a cheap relay of signals that people use when they need it. He tells her that that’s how normal people who take pride in ‘feeling’ emotions are. He makes to leave and Jin Sung brings up the fact that he’s angry with himself because he got angry and ran away from a patient. She mentions that he’s probably scared that he will keep running and Young Oh laughs as he states that this is how people are; they use a person’s weakness as a sore spot from which they make their attack. Or they see the person as a disgusting burden to get rid of when no one’s looking. As he says the last line, he glances across at the neighbor who’s close to the edge and and her mother-in-law. He tells her to take back her request for help and immediately, there’s a splash as the neighbor’s fallen over. Young Oh tells Jin Sung that the mother-in-law made her choice irregardless of whether or not she’s seen. Jin Sung suggests they bet on it and jumps into the water to rescue the neighbor. Post rescue, Young Oh hands her a handkerchief and asks what she’s trying to prove. Jin Sung answers that she wanted to show him that in her world, Granny (the mother-in-law) isn’t so bad a person that she would kill her sick daughter-in-law. She then tells him that if he’s not scared, he should try healing the woman so they can see whether he’s the one that’s right or she’s the one who’s right.
5. Sung Eun’s is not the doctor you want when you’re waiting for a heart transplant
In a hospital ward, happy parents anxiously wait for the heart coming to their sick daughter. The doctors attending to them calm them down with the promise that the extraction team with the new heart is on their way in. The only problem is that the extraction team which comprises of Kyung Jin and Sung Eun are stuck in traffic. Kyung Jin is understandably worried, Sung Eun is the jackass doctor who’s playing games on his phone and not bothered that they have to get the heart to the patient in thirty minutes otherwise it becomes useless. Sung Eun just keeps playing his games and Kyung Jin has to ask why Sung Eun had signed on for the extraction team. Sung Eun admits that it’s because he wanted to ride in a helicopter (what an idiot). His words prove Kyung Jin right as he admits that the reason why he’d come along was to ensure that Sung Eun doesn’t kill someone with his ineptitude. He tells Sung Eun to be a real doctor and not a quack. At that moment, he gets a call from the doctor, Lee Shi Hyun who’s calling about the heart. The words have Sung Eun taking off with the heart as he claims that he knows a shortcut. Shi Hyun on the other hand, leads her patient to the elevator so they can head to the OR. Moon Kyung asks the heart patient what her plans are and at first the patient teases about going on rides with a boyfriend she hopes to get. But she ends up telling them that she would rather just have no need to wait anymore for a call to tell her that a heart is ready. Kyung Jin tells her that transplants are easy but bloody, and the one thing she would promise is that her patient would get the chance to go on those rides. She sends her patient of into the OR and runs into Sung Eun who pants as he informs her how far he had to run to get her patient’s heart to the hospital. He asks for a meal as a reward and Shi Hyun points out he should feel ashamed of himself, wanting credit when her patient has felt as out of breath as he is, for the past four years.
6. Suk Joo speaks for us all and Young Oh gets his groove back, only to lose it again
Suk Joo visits Gun Myung in his office to ask for Young Oh’s contact information. Gun Myung wonders why Suk Joo’s searching for Young Oh and automatically assumes that Young Oh ‘did’ something to him (dude, you’re a horrible father). When he asks if it has to do with hospital affairs, Suk Joo replies that only Young Oh can give an answer to that. Gun Myung asks if Suk Joo thinks him a bad parent then (dude, you called it. We didn’t) and states that he too is looking for Young Oh. He tells Suk Joo that when Young Oh returns, he will be sure to pass the message along. Suk Joo makes to leave then turns around to ask Gun Myung if he regrets his decision to throw out his only family, Young Oh, for the sake of his principles. Suk Joo leaves and Gun Myung makes a call to someone, asking if Young Oh hasn’t been located yet. Young Oh on the other hand, has decided to pay a visit to the island hospital where Jin Sung’s neighbor is at. He ignores the island doctor and properly examines her, all the while Jin Sung’s mother brother and yet another neighbor are vilifying the mother-in-law for the attempted murder, and Jin Sung pays a visit to the family home. Young Oh takes note of the physical symptoms of the neighbor and when she regains consciousness, he asks her if her mother-in-law had been the one to push her into the water. As he asks the question, he starts to read her body signals and stops as Min Jae’s words that he’s reading her body signals again, echo in his head. He steps back, as if to leave but runs into Jin Sung who answers a call from her mother and delivers the news to Young Oh: the mother-in-law has turned herself in for pushing her daughter-in-law into the ocean. Young Oh’s delighted that he was right after all and then he informs the countryside doctor that the neighbor isn’t suffering from a stroke but is instead suffering from Hashimoto disease. He advises the island doctor on what to put on her transfer form, tells Young Oh that he’s sure living arrangements between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law would be difficult and so an alternative has to be worked out, and makes to leave. But the neighbor starts to convulse, theisland doctor disappears, whilst trying to call for an ambulance and Young Oh holds onto the woman as he states that he can’t be wrong this time either. He walks away dazed and doesn’t even hear Jin Sung calling for him.
7. The donor heart is defective
Shi Hyun is all ready to put in the donor heart into her patient when Suk Joo calls a halt to the proceedings. She states that they’d gotten the heart on time and it had been checked in the donor hospital before being brought in but Suk Joo points out that the heart’s developed an infection within the valve and can’t be used. Shi Hyun is desperate and suggests transplanting the heart anyway, after which they can treat for symptoms. But it’s a risky plan and Suk Joo tells her to get herself together. Shi Hyun points out that the patient might not survive waiting so long for a new heart and Suk Joo replies that without her heart, the patient would die immediately. He asks Shi Hyun if that’s what she wants and Shi Hyun finally agrees to close up her patient. When her patient regains consciousness and jokes that the reason why her heart is still beating so rapidly is because she got a donor heart from a man who finds Shi Hyun attractive, Shi Hyun runs out and Suk Joo comes to meet her. She tears up, stating that she did everything and still can’t save her patient. She asks how much longer she has to keep fighting the fight and Suk Joo replies that he intends to keep fighting till the very end. He walks away, leaving a crying Shi Hyun behind and even Sung Eun who spots her can’t bring himself to approach her with how devastated she is.
8. Yoon Kyung’s still missed and Suk Joo doesn’t pull back his punches
Suk Joo walks into Ji An’s room and finds Kyung Soo there. Kyung Soo states that he couldn’t just go home and sighs that it was his first surgery as a professor and he feels terrible. Suk Joo tells him that they’d always known that Kyung Soo would become a professor: he’s short-tempered and foul-mouthed and is perfect for anesthesiology. Kyung Soo explains that he’s been having a bad time lately and can’t release his anger. So he can’t swear about the fact that an anesthesiologist did something that cruel and got away with it. He wishes he could yell as much as he can, saying it’s not right, but he can’t do that either. He sighs as he figures that that’s probably the reason why he misses Yoon Kyung so much. He leaves and Suk Joo’s struck with memories of Yoon Kyung. The moment is interrupted by Soon Ho who says he heard the news about the transplant and states that the Creator can be cruel sometimes, because someone can survive with half his livers, fingernails grow back after they’re trimmed and yet, the brain and the heart, the two most important organs can’t be regenerate when they’re damaged. Suk Joo’s not interested in his narration and Soon Ho cuts to the heart of the matter, asking if Suk Joo really must find Young Oh especially because nothing can be done anyway, seeing that they would get FDA approval soon and then transplants will be a thing of the past. Suk Joo interrupts the conversation to call him a scumbag (thank you. I’ve been screaming it him for a long while but I don’t think he can hear me. What an asshole).
9. Young Oh finds himself
When Jin Sung joins him, Young Oh admits that he’d lost the bet and hadn’t been able to diagnose the patient properly. He looks lost as he states that he can’t read the patient’s mind anymore and makes to walk away, but stops when Jin Sung asks him what would happen if it wasn’t the mother-in-law who had pushed her daughter-in-law into the ocean. She then shows Young Oh wheelchair fliers as she explains that the mother-in-law had considered her daughter-in-law her future and not a burden, and one doesn’t throw his future into the ocean. She asks Young Oh if he’s never had a moment when he’d desperately needed someone even though he knew the person wouldn’t have been of any help. The words have Young Oh running back to the neighbor and he explains to the two island doctors that are now gathered that the woman wasn’t suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage or a stroke. Plus, it wasn’t the mother-in-law that had pushed the woman in but she’d jumped on her own because she hallucinates that she’s on fire and had jumped into the water to survive. The other island doctor wonders who Young Oh is and how he knows all he’s saying. Young Oh states that he’d for the first time, read the patient’s mind and treated her like a human being (awww. We’re all Jin Sung right now, proud of how far Young Oh’s come). The other island doctor doesn’t believe Young Oh’s diagnosis and Young Oh has to search for immunosuppressants on his own. Before the doctor can stop him, Young Oh plunges the needle in. The result is almost instantaneous as the woman settles and then speaks for the first time in a long while, asking for her mother-in-law. Young Oh says almost disbelievingly that he was right.
10. Reintroducing Doctor Lee Young Oh (We’ve missed you)
Whilst mother-in-law and daughter-in-law are reunited, Ji Sung’s away by the sea, telling Young Oh that she won their bet. She tells him that he too had believed in Granny’s sincerity and that was why his diagnosis was accurate. Young Oh wonders if that’s why she’d brought him there, to tell him that (nah. It’s so we can admire the beautiful scenery). She shrugs and he tells her that there’s not a chance because the human body never lies. He continues that his world is a perfectly logical one without the pollution of emotions and sincerity and that’s why he still loves medicine. Ji Sung points to the use of the world ‘still’ and Young Oh admits that she’d been right, he had needed the help of someone who he hadn’t thought would be of help, and it hadn’t been as bad as he’d thought (awww. He’s talking about you Jin Sung). Jin Sung smiles and Young Oh makes to leave, only for the island doctor to come running and inform him that the patient wants to meet with Young Oh. He asks Young Oh if he’s really a real doctor. Young Oh pauses for a moment then says confirms that he is a doctor: Doctor Lee Young Oh (well hello there our pretty. Happy to see you back).
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because she’s so certain Young Oh won’t be coming back and she said it with such cold detachment like she’s the lord of him and can predict what he will do. Bitch shut the fuck up.
Headache inducing moment:
None in this episode.
This episode’s a Sidecar, warm and mellow and worthy of being savored. Young Oh was broken in the previous episode and it was a beauty to watch him slowly come back to his own and return to believing in himself and his ability. It was also a beauty to see his relationship with Jin Sung evolve till she because the helper he never expected. It’s absolutely delicious.
