Ji Hong continues to win Hye Jung over, one step at a time although he’s got even more competition when an old flame is back and Hye Jung’s all chummy with him. Hye Jung meets with her family and makes it clear that she doesn’t consider them family, although she secretly wishes for it. And Hye Jung’s dealt yet another devastating blow.
The Episode in 10 Moments:
- Ji Hong’s willing to wait
We open on Hye Jung as a child listening in on a screaming argument between her parents. Her mother had threatened to kill herself if Min Ho had left but her husband had left anyway, and had scowled at Hye Jung on the way out. Now, adult Hye Jung tells us that love between a man and a woman means fighting until one person’s dead. She doesn’t know how to love a man and doesn’t know how to be loved as a woman. We then pick up after the rain in the dance when Ji Hong tells Hye Jung that he wants to give her a gift as a man to a woman. She guesses he’s going to kiss her and states that she has to avoid it. She tells herself to turn her head but doesn’t move fast enough and Ji Hong lays a kiss on her. She’s stunned after receiving the kiss and runs away, stating that she won’t be her mother who killed herself because of her love for a man. Ji Hong finally catches up to her and tells her that he won’t ask her the second question just yet. Instead, he’d wait because he recognizes his feelings and is willing to wait till she feels it too and is ready to move. Over at Kookil hospital, Yoon Do offers Seo Woo a cup of coffee and tries to comfort her by ascribing her outburst to concern over his patient: the Restaurant ajumma. Seo Woo’s distraught over how unfair it is when the woman who’s worked hard all her life ends up dying anyway. Yoon Do’s surprised to see this side of her but she claims she’s also given to outbursts and has to hold back. Yoon Do doesn’t believe her and Seo Woo tells him that she loves him, stating that that’s what she wanted to tell him at Restaurant Ajumma’s restaurant. He tries pushing away her confession but she won’t let it go and Yoon Do admits that she’s persistent, which was the reason why he’d tried avoiding hearing her say the words. Seo Woo then tries to get him to promise not to like anyone else for the next six months as that’s a suitable mourning period for him turning her down (girl, he doesn’t owe you jack shit). Yoon Do replies that that’s impossible because he already likes someone else and Seo Woo guesses correctly that it’s Hye Jung and wonders why of all people, Yoon Do had to fall for her. Yoon Do’s all, the heart wants what the heart wants but Seo Woo’s not feeling particularly cheery. Thankfully Young Kook comes in and Yoon Do leaves him to comfort Seo Woo whilst he and Kyung Joon take a look at Restaurant Ajumma’s scans.
2. Seo Woo’s a chatty drunk and Hye Jung fills Soon Hee in
Deciding that the best thing to cheer up Seo Woo’s a drink, Young Kook takes her out and brings her to Sooni Hawaii where Soon Hee’s all happy to see her, but Seo Woo’s prissy and ignores her. She doesn’t ignore her when she’s flat out drunk though and takes to grilling Soon Hee as she asks how long Soon Hee and Hye Jung have been roommates. When Soon Hee tells her that it’s been since high school because Hye Jung’s grandmother died and Soon Hee didn’t want to travel to Canada, Seo Woo wonders if it’s true because the word around town had been that Hye Jung had moved in with Soo Chul but Soon Hee insists that Hye Jung lived with her. Right at that moment, Soo Chul makes a beer delivery and Seo Woo recognizes him. She runs after him, calling herself Hye Jung’s friend who can give him Hye Jung’s number. When she scoffs that Hye Jung’s now a doctor, Soo Chul, takes it as her insulting him about what his life’s been reduced to and he storms off (okay, so he has self esteem issues then). Back at home, Soon Hee fills Hye Jung in on her day as they prepare for bed, telling her that Seo Woo caused a scene although she doesn’t say with who. When Hye Jung likens Soon Hee prepping her for bed to Soon Hee turning her into a doll she’s taking care of, Soon Hee replies that she’s practicing for when she’s married. She’s envious that Hye Jung has someone who’s in love with her and even more envious when she learns that she and Ji Hong kissed. She observes that Ji Hong must be in a hurry and is befuddled as to why he’s taking it slow (um, have you see Hye Jung? Girl’s gonna bolt if he moves any faster). She declares that Hye Jung should quickly marry Ji Hong (hahaha. Now that’s a good friend) especially because Soon Hee’s felt guilty at the thought of leaving her should she get married. She urges Hye Jung to enjoy her life because Hye Jung hasn’t had the chance to, what with her having to study and work her way up the medical ladder. Hye Jung though is all about priorities but Soon Hee the Sage replies that nothing’s as important as love (tell her Soon Hee. Tell her). Hye Jung smiles at her, but ends up crying later that night when she sees Mal Soon’s name on the operation record (awwww. We miss her too Hye Jung).
3. Ji Hong plays mind-games on Yoon Do and Myung Hoon’s plan kicks in
Yoon Do heads out to work and makes a face when he sees Ji Hong coming out of Pa Ran’s apartment (hahaha). Ji Hong’s miffed and grumbles that Yoon Do shouldn’t worry because he has no plans of following him to work anyway. He walks away and Yoon Do wonders if Ji Hong’s playing hard to get (hahaha. I can’t even. Hahaha. So cute). The hard to get ploy works because next thing we see, Yoon Do’s driving Ji Hong to work (hahaha. So hilarious). To avoid the awkward silence in the car, Yoon Do turns on music, and then the news where they catch the tail end of a news report about big hospitals entering into the stock market in order to profit themselves. Yoon Do immediately turns off the news and grumbles that he can’t stand politics. Ji Hong though believes they should be concerned since it’s encroaching on their livelihood. He has every right to be concerned too because Chairman Hong is beset by news reporters who are grilling him about him purchasing the shares of the medical center in order to make profits. Chairman Hong denies the charges but the reporters have his name on the purchased shares. Ji Hong meets with Tae Ho who tells him that they’re basically at war and requests Ji Hong join him at the forefront by doing what he does best. But Ji Hong’s wary of politics as his desire is to merely treat people and Tae Ho tells him that what he’s asking for is Ji Hong’s skills and mentions Lee Soo Jeong, an Olympic medalist archer who was banned from competing because she was thought to have been competing drunk because of her shaking hand. Tae Ho shows Ji Hong one of her videos and Ji Hong confirms that it looks more like an action tremor and he would have to run some tests. He wonders how taking on Soo Jeong would help his father though and Tae Ho admits to having learned something from Myung Hoon in all the bickering and humiliation: realistic thinking. He tells Ji Hong that if he ends up taking over the presidential position (please do! I can’t stand to see Myung Hoon as the hospital president any longer) and the hospital books are in the red, then the hospital would have to close. Which is why he wants Ji Hong to take on Soo Jeong’s case and be successful at it. That way, Ji Hong would make a name for himself and they can leverage off of that because now, Tae Ho wants to win (good for you).
4. Yoon Do’s adorably flustered and Ji Hong’s his cheeky self
At the hospital, whilst being briefed by Kyung Joon, Yoon Do receives a text message from Hye Jung, thanking him for taking on Ga Jin’s case. He’s miffed that that’s all she has to say (hahaha. So cute) and goes to confront her. Hye Jung though figures it’s the appropriate response because he’d sent a voicemail and she walks away. Yoon Do though isn’t willing to let that go and follows her to the elevator where Hye Jung asks him why he changed his mind about treating Ga Jin. He replies that it’s because Ga Jin’s her stepmother and he too has had his fair share of stepmother troubles. When Hye Jung asks him if any of his stepmothers abused him, he claims that she flusters him with her unexpectedly touching questions, but wouldn’t clarify (ha! He’s so adorable). He then tells Hye Jung that he will be meeting Ga Jin soon and try to have her surgery scheduled very quickly. When Hye Jung still doesn’t give a good enough reply to his nice gestures, he brings it up and Hye Jung finally breaks and tells him that she doesn’t care about Ga Jin or whether her surgery’s successful or not. It makes her a horrible doctor, she knows but the only thing that’s making her not feel too bad is because Ga Jin is still a horrible person herself. A doctor then comes barreling towards them and Hye Jung pulls Yoon Do out of harm’s way. He gets even more miffed wondering why Hye Jung’s trying to protect him instead of it being the other way around (hahaha) and when Hye Jung merely ignores him and continues on her way, he follows after her like a miffed puppy (hahaha), and Pa Ran who notes it, shakes his head for his clueless nephew. Pa Ran also follows and soon Hye Jung, Yoon Do and Pa Ran all arrive outside Ji Hong’s door. Ji Hong pushes Pa Ran in the minute the latter attempts to start flirting yet again with Hye Jung and he asks Hye Jung in as well. As for Yoon Do, he leaves him outside the door, claiming that the three of them have something private to discuss. Yoon Do’s miffed at being left out at what he assumes is a new clique at work (hahaha. Grumpy Yoon Do’s so cute) and when Kyung Joon calls, he makes sure to state in a loud voice that he’s very busy, so the others can hear him (hahaha). The meeting turns out to be Pa Ran looking through Mal Soon’s operation records. Except, the document is nothing special and just basically lists out the surgery and states that Mal Soon went into a cardiac arrest and died. What they do agree on though is that the handwritten report by the anesthesiologist should have more information. The words have Hye Jung running as she figures that the medical records office at the Kookil branch where the surgery had taken place should have the records. She turns down Ji Hong’s offer to help her find the information as she figures he’s done enough to help her already and it’s something she must do on her own. When she brings up the fact that he has outpatients to see, he chuckles that she checked his schedule. When Hye Jung replies that she’s the fellow assigned to him and should know such, he mutters that his heart had fluttered for no reason. The words fluster Hye Jung who tries to run away, although she can’t avoid hearing Ji Hong call out to her that she makes his heart flutter (hahaha. Ji Hong being his cheeky self has my heart fluttering.
5. Those who’re good doubt themselves and Ga Jin’s still being an entitled bitch
Whist Yoon Do’s being as curt as possible with Ga Jin, all the while letting her know that he’s only doing her surgery quickly because Hye Jung asked him to, Ji Hong’s meets with Soo Jeong. She explains that her tremors started in the past year and when she’d learned that alcohol helped to calm them somewhat, she’d taken to drinking some before her games. That got her into trouble however and she hasn’t been drinking as much ever since. She states that she’s willing to do anything to get the one hand to stop shaking and asks if Ji Hong can cure her. Ji Hong’s not sure and states that she would have to take some tests. But Soo Jeong isn’t interested in a doctor who isn’t sure whether or not he can cure her ailment. Ji Hong notes that she’s impatient and quick to judge and informs her that those who are the best at what they do are the ones who doubt themselves so they can prevent mistakes from happening. Meanwhile, Ga Jin is meeting with Kang Soo who’s taking her through the tests she has to take prior to her surgery. Ga Jin acts all entitled, asking why it has to take so long considering that Hye Jung’s her daughter (no she isn’t. Your daughter’s the one sitting right next to you. You’re the woman her father married, you are NOT her mother) and when Kang Soo replies that her test would be done in two days instead of a month because she’s getting the VIP treatment due to her relationship with Hye Jung, Ga Jin’s surprised that Hye Jung has such pull in the hospital. Of course she then goes on an annoying rant about how Hye Jung’s treating her horribly, and hasn’t come to see her. She even adds that she has so many tales of Hye Jung growing up that would get Hye Jung fired and then broaches the topic of getting a discount for her consultation. Unfortunately though, she can’s access it until Hye Jung submits a document indicating her as family, to Human Resources (thank heavens for the HR department. Stopping family leeches since time immemorial). She grumbles and Kang Soo leaves, only to be followed by Yoo Na who requests for Hye Jung’s number, stating that their father misses her.
6. Winning Hye Jung over one surgery at a time and Seo Woo’s a wet blanket
Ji Hong shows Hye Jung, Soo Jeong’s scans and uses the opportunity to both question her and teach at the same time. When she gives a pat answer as to how Soo Jeong’s condition can be treated with drug management, Ji Hong asks her to answer like a neurosurgeon. The words have her eyes widening in excitement as she realizes that Ji Hong’s going to be performing an awake surgery and she will be assisting. In her excitement, she grabs hold of his hands shouting that she loves the suggestion a lot because she’s been practicing and dreaming of the day when she will be able to see and be a part of an awake surgery. Ji Hong laughs at seeing this side of her and Hye Jung can only thank him with a huge grin on her face. When she notices that she’s been clutching onto Ji Hong’s hands all this while however, she releases his hands and Ji Hong chuckles. She’s still excited as she leaves the office and bumps into Seo Woo who wonders what has her so happy. Hye Jung replies that she’s doing an awake surgery with Ji Hong which has Seo Woo walking into Ji Hong’s office and asking that she be assigned to his service as she wants to assist him in Soo Jeong’s surgery (what a bitch). When Ji Hong points out that it’s not that easy because she already chose Yoon Do, and he has Hye Jung assigned to him, she demands a meeting with him, Hye Jung and Yoon Do where she states that she wants to transfer to Ji Hong’s service. Yoon Do agrees that he too wants to work with Hye Jung as he’s been working with Seo Woo for way too long. Seo Woo gets prissy at the words and they soon start to bicker. Hye Jung though is fine with working with Ji Hong and when Yoon Do states that Hye Jung inspires him, with how talented she is and all, Ji Hong cuts in that seeing that both he and Yoon Do want to work with Hye Jung and Hye Jung and Seo Woo want to work with him, then he would be pairing up with Hye Jung because he and Hye Jung want each other (oh yes. You definitely do want each other. Hahaha). Seo Woo then asks to be a part of the surgery and Yoon Do suggests that they can alternate the fellows so the fellows can get a more rounded training. Ji Hong agrees and as he and Hye Jung leave together, Seo Woo, ever the wet blanket tells Yoon Do that Ji Hong and Hye Jung like each other and she’s glad that Yoon Do will be experience having to watch his crush like another man. Yoon Do’s not bothered though, claiming that he’s very good at starting a relationship when he sets his mind to it (you? Ha! I shall believe it when I see it, oh awkwardly adorable one) and Seo Woo replies that she too will give it her all because she can’t lose to Hye Jung twice and she’s had her eyes on Yoon Do for a while, meaning she can’t lose him either. The words scare Yoon Do though (and you should be scared. Very scared. Girl’s just a little bit loco).
7. Hye Jung’s amassing a harem for herself and the turn-a-hospital-into-a-profit-making-machine squad converge
Soon Hee’s setting up Sooni Hawaii for the day’s business when Soo Chul drops in for a visit to admit that he’d recognized her all along but had been embarrassed because they were all so successful. He mentions that he won’t be making deliveries anymore because he got fired. Turns out he’d been depressed at how well everyone else had turned out that he’d gotten drunk and made a scene at work. He’s impressed though that Hye Jung’s a doctor now and when Soon Hee says she mentioned him to Hye Jung, he’s all aflutter as he wonders what Hye Jung said. Soon Hee’s horrified to see that he’s still in love with Hye Jung, pointing out that he used to tail Hye Jung around and he gets upset that Hye Jung implied that their love was one-sided (hahaha) and declares that he would go to the hospital and cause a scene. To that effect, he heads to the hospital whilst Hye Jung’s on her rounds and although Young Kook and the nurses try to prevent Hye Jung from seeing him because they think he’s a thug there to cause trouble, Hye Jung spots him and busts into a smile, calling him a friend as she goes to greet and tease him. The scene is witnessed by Ji Hong who grumbles about Soo Chul still being around (hahaha) and Yoon Do makes a face as he realizes there’s yet another man wanting to win over Hye Jung’s affection (hahaha. This is Scarlet Heart: Goryeo, set in modern times and centered around a hospital). Meanwhile, Sung Jong and Myung Hoon are meeting with President Jung and politician Nan and all four of them have drinks in celebration of their plans coming into fruition. Politician Nan complains about the the fact that in politics, your connection disappears the minute you’re no longer popular whilst Myung Hoon’s complaint is about the hospital and the fact that they all have to pretend to be nice (wait, so all that’s you pretending to be nice? Wow, I wonder what you’ll look like when you stop being nice. What a jackass). President Jung wonders what Myung Hoon has to worry about considering their goal is about coming to fruition and Myung Hoon replies that he would be happy when everything’s settled. Mr. Nan though mentions that they’re facing a bit of resistance from the people with regards to the for-profit clause for hospitals but President Jung is convinced that it’s only a matter of time.
8. Hye Jung’s an inspiration who finally meets with her dad
Hye Jung meets with Soo Chul in her office where they catch up on old times. She states that she wants them to meet up more often and Soo Chul thanks her for not pretending to not recognize him now that she’s become a doctor and Hye Jung thanks him for being her support during her difficult times. She promises to take him out for drinks but Soo Chul’s there to be both say hello and then goodbye as he’s moving to be with his son. Turns out he’s divorced and has an adorable son who’s living with his mother. Soo Chul tells Hye Jung of his plan to put his all and try his best because Hye Jung’s inspired him to aspire to more. When he asks her if he can pull it off, Hye Jung replies that it’s not too late especially because he’s young and hot. They’re just the words he wanted to hear (awwww). Hye Jung then asks him if he still rides a motorcycle and he replies that he rides occasionally. Their moment is interrupted with a call from Min Ho who wants to meet with her. She agrees but when they meet, things are a bit awkward as they sit in silence for a while, until Min Ho pushes forward an envelope, stating that the address is where Mal Soon’s remains have been moved to. He then tells her that she looks good and brings up the fact that he runs a restaurant, stating that he’d gotten his cooking skills from Mal Soon. All through the conversation, Hye Jung remains silent and when Min Ho suggests that she come visit the restaurant with her colleagues as he will be sure to treat them well, Hye Jung makes to leave. Min Ho though points out that she hasn’t finished with her tea and Hye Jung reminds him that she’s an adult now who doesn’t need the care of her parents. Min Ho replies that she shouldn’t live her life that way as she won’t be happy with a grudge but Hye Jung isn’t bearing a grudge. What she means is that the time when she’d needed Min Ho: her childhood, is gone and now she’s an adult who’s used to living alone and who believes they should live separate lives. Min Ho wonders who would walk her down the aisle when she wants to get married then and states that Hye Jung needs him (dude, not your best selling point at the moment). Hye Jung replies that she doesn’t want to need him, hence the reason why she doesn’t plan on getting married. With those words she leaves and Min Ho looks sad for a short while. By the time he thinks to get up and chase after her, she’s driven away.
9. Ga Jin’s surgery is a success and Ji Hong gives a diagnosis
Min Ho and Yoo Na are at the hospital for Ga Jin’s surgery and although Hye Jung comes to check on them, she doesn’t reveal herself and instead turns around and walks away. Inside the operation room, Yoon Do’s surgery goes successfully and he closes Ga Jin up. Meanwhile, Ji Hong meets with Soo Jeong to inform her that although her tremors are essential tremors in the sense that they have no known cause, he does have a plan to tackle it in the form of a deep brain stimulation whereby they perform her surgery whilst she’s awake to see if electric stimulations to the deep part of her brain can help to get rid of the tremor. The only problem though is that there’s no guarantee that the surgery will get rid of the tremors and the side effects can range from paralysis and coma to nerve damage. Soo Jeong is scared and asks for the success rate of the surgery. When Ji Hong tells that it has a ninety percent success rate, she’s delighted and thankful and asks for the chance to be able to live stream her surgery so she can show the world that her tremors weren’t caused by alcoholism and to prove, even if the surgery fails, that she’d done her absolute best (this can go well or very very badly). Ji Hong agrees. Meanwhile, Hye Jung receives a visitor in Yoon Do who comes to inform her that Ga Jin’s surgery was successful. When she tells him that she’s grateful for the help, Yoon Do tries to milk it by asking her to have a meal with him. Hye Jung who has no idea that he’s asking her out on a date, tells him she’s not that grateful that she would buy him food. Yoon Do then tells her that he would pay but Hye Jung smiles as she tells him that they’re not close enough for her to eat with him. He replies that the whole reason for the meal is for them to become closer and Hye Jung’s about to reply when Seo Woo barges in, suspicious about the sudden silence and telling Hye Jung to answer Yoon Do’s question when Yoon Do replies that the reason why there’s silence is because he’d just finished talking. Hye Jung tells Yoon Do that maybe next time and Seo Woo figures out that Yoon Do was turned down. He leaves embarrassed and both Seo Woo and Hye Jung get texts from Ji Hong to come for a briefing on Soo Jeong’s surgery. When they get to his office, Ji Hong informs them both that the surgery would be the next day and then spends the rest of the time smiling at Hye Jung who smiles right back. Seo Woo just thinks to herself that they’re head over heels in love with each other and should just get a room (Seo Woo, this is the first time I’ve actually kind of liked you).
10. Hye Jung won’t budge an inch and disaster strikes
Hye Jung runs into Yoo Na and Min Ho whilst they’re being updated on Ga Jin’s condition. Min Ho’s attempt to be friendly though is met with Hye Jung merely nodding her head in greeting and walking away. She’s alone when Yoo Na comes in to hand her the family relation certificate and to ask Hye Jung if Hye Jung hates her. Hye Jung answers that she doesn’t and Yoo Na’s thrilled as she’s always wanted to have a sister. Hye Jung though isn’t interested in things changing and tells Yoo Na that she doesn’t want anything to do with her family (damn) and that she will submit the relation certificate so Yoo Na should stop her parents for her (ouch). Yoo Na’s stunned and Hye Jung only shows her yearning for her family when she’s alone in her room. But a call from Soo Chul asking to see her before he leaves the next day has her smiling and they make plans to meet. The next morning, Yoon Do snarks that he’s thrilled Ji Hong’s finally gotten his own car as he’d had plans to invent a girlfriend to get Ji Hong to stop carpooling with him. He’s fidgety though and Ji Hong notices and calls him a dork (hahaha). And then Ji Hong smiles like a dork himself when he thinks that it would be nice to have a girlfriend (hahahahaha). Over at Hye Jung’s house, Soo Chul comes over on his motorcycle as promised and they agree that he would treat her at the hospital cafeteria. He rides ahead of her whilst Hye Jung follows behind him, smiling. Ji Hong who’s still thinking of the girlfriend comment smiles and calls Hye Jung who answers the phone cheerfully. When she tells him that she’s headed to work with Soo Chul, he grumbles (hahaha. Jealous Ji Hong is so cute). Soo Chul though keeps speeding (this is not going to be good) and then runs into incoming traffic (Fuck!). Hye Jung screams, Ji Hong asks her what’s wrong and Hye Jung can only watch a motionless Soo Chul on the ground as she tells us that that’s how things have always been. Love begat fear and fear consumes her.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because I repeat, bitch, you are NOT her mother. Her mother committed suicide because Min Ho was cheating on her with YOU. You have never had a kind word to say to her and even had the audacity to blame Mal Soon’s death on her. So sit your bitchass down and shut the fuck up.
Headache inducing moment:
Because with all that honing in on Soo Chul and him on the bike and both of them happy, I just had a sinking sensation that things wouldn’t end well. When there’s too much focus on happy, the terrible always comes along with it. And I was right. Drats!
This episode’s a Negroni. Filled with all the sweet moments of Hye Jung slowly falling in love and Ji Hong’s happy smile and Yoon Do’s adorable self trying to get the attention of the girl he likes without him coming straight out and saying it’s so. But it also comes with the bitterness of Soo Chul’s accident especially because he’s a man who’s been given a new lease on life and who we’ve been made to root for, and because Hye Jung who’s just starting to open herself up to love again has just been reminded that everyone who loves her, eventually leaves her all alone.
