There’s still dillydallying with the whodunit mystery but Dan Tae finally makes some headway. Joon Soo hears information that further implicates his mother, Dae Chul continues to think that he’s a smart villain but Gong Shim’s still Gong Shim, the saving grace of this entire episode.
The Episode in 10 Moments:
- Dan Tae confronts Joon Soo and Gong Mi learns she and Shim are now colleagues
After Gong Shim excuses them, Joon Soo and Dan Tae head to the rooftop where Joon Soo wonders what Dan Tae’s playing at and Dan Tae wonders why Joon Soo has the phone. Joon Soo admits that the phone isn’t his but Dan Tae doesn’t believe him and grabs Joon Soo by the collar as he tells him that he saw him at the hospital. He screams at Joon Soo asking why he would go that far to protect his person and ruin things for Dan Tae. He also promises to reveal everything that Joon Soo wants to conceal and leaves (um, why be so vague? Simply tell him that your father was almost killed so he can know exactly what kind of man his uncle is). Back at home that night, Gong Shim’s thrilled at her new job and surprised that Joon Soo merged with her design company to start his new company. She shares this information with Dan Tae and then with her family, and Gong Mi who has been initially dreaming about the time she would be spending with Joon Soo is stunned to hear that she and Gong Shim will be working at the same company (hahaha. Take that Gong Mi). She finds the news depressing even though their parents are pleased at how cost effective it would be for the sisters to head into work together.
2. The wives get suspicious and the husbands get busted
That night, Gong Shim’s dad gets a text message that has him excited and makes Gong Shim’s mother curious as to who’s texting him so late. Seeking a distraction, Gong Shim’s dad suggests Gong Shim’s mother put on a face mask that night and even volunteers to put it on for her. With the mask on and with her drifting off to sleep, Gong Shim’s dad sneaks out. Over at Joon Soo’s house, Joon Soo’s mother is surprised to find her husband’s phone newly passworded. Her husband enters and goes all up-in-arms about her not trusting him and storms out, claiming that he needs to clear his head (hahaha). Gong Shim’s mother meanwhile, wakes up from her nap to find her husband gone and wonders at his strange behavior. She puts the signs together and guesses that he’s having an affair (yup. He’s having an affair with his soulmate and fellow lover of Hye Eun Yi: Dae Hwang. Hahaha). Joon Soo’s mother is also suspicious of her husband’s overreaction and wonders where he stormed off to. Using her phone tracker (creepy) Joon Soo’s mother traces Joon Soo’s father to his location and bumps into Gong Shim’s mother who had also come looking for her husband (does she have a tracker too?). They have a mini argument and then head into the club where surprise surprise, they see their husbands performing a song together on stage (hahaha. I can’t even… Hahahaha. These two will make the best in-laws I swear). They wives as expected throw tantrums with Jae Boon dragging her husband off by his ears and Tea Hee giving her husband the cold shoulder. Both husbands though shrug them off and run to meet each other in the middle of the road, holding onto each others hands as they promise to meet again, sometime soon whilst their wives can only scream uselessly from afar (hahaha. This is hilarious. Just too hilarious :D).
3. Dan Tae finds Kim Gil Bong and Joon Soo explores another angle
Dan Tae tries once again to see if he can get in touch with Kim Gil Bong (the guy who’d handed over the note to Joon Soo’s mother) but is informed that the man’s quit and they have no means of contacting him save for his cellphone that’s been discontinued. When the person on the other end of the line mentions that Gil Bong used to live in the arboretum dorm, Dan Tae confirms that he was also Soo Yong’s roommate. With that information in hand, Dan Tae searches through his father’s luggage and spots his contact book which conveniently has the contact address of Kim Gil Bong (thank heavens for men who haven’t evolved into storing all their contact information on their mobile phones. I haven’t used a notebook to store my contacts in a long long while). Following the address written in the notebook, Dan Tae locates Gil Bong but Gil Bong is not willing to say anything and doesn’t respond even when Dan Tae shows him a picture of Joon Soo and asks him if it was Joon Soo that paid him to quit his job and run away or if someone else was involved. Back at the office, Dan Tae runs into Joon Soo and wonders if he’s resorted to bribery in order to cover his tracks. Joon Soo has no idea what he’s talking about but the person who does: Dae Chul, watches the altercation from above and smiles that the cousins are on their way to hating each other and everything’s going according to his plan. He flashes back to when he’d dropped the mobile phone in Joon Soo’s bag and thinks to himself that soon, either Joon Soo would kick Dan Tae out, or Joon Soo would handle the situation himself (guy’s clearly delusional. Like seriously though, Joon Soo wouldn’t be harming Dan Tae in any way. Not everyone’s as mean and nasty as you are). He stays there for too long however and Dan Tae spots him. Dan Tae also notes how quickly he runs away. Meanwhile, Joon Soo heads to a data recovery center and to recover the data on the phone Dae Chul had framed him with. The expert is not too certain about the possibility of it being successful because the phone’s been reset but he promises to do his best.
4. Gong Mi gets a firsthand view of how much Joon Soo likes Gong Shim
Whilst settling into her new office, Gong Mi receives a visitor in Joon Soo who’s come to congratulate her on her first day at work. As he reels out the different legal matters they would need Gong Mi’s help with, Gong Mi’s attention is taken by the gift bag in his hands. But Joon Soo doesn’t extend it to her. When she heads out of her office to go see someone else, she runs into Joon Soo giving the gift bag to Gong Shim as a present for her first day at work. Seeing it upsets Gong Mi but she says nothing and just walks away.
5. Grandmother gets a firsthand view of how awesome Gong Shim is
Dan Tae’s meets with Grandmother and explains that nothing’s come out of his search just yet. Grandmother though is more concerned with meeting Gong Shim and when Dan Tae tries to get out of her meeting Gong Shim, she pulls rank (hahaha) and soon enough, Dan Tae’s calling Gong Shim and spinning a story about how he’d messed up Grandmother’s schedule and she’s on her way to the house pissed at him. He explains that he’s stuck in traffic and begs her to help calm Grandmother on his behalf. She falls for it completely (hahaha. Sweet Gong Shim) and when she sees Grandmother, she’s all courteous and graceful (ha! Wonder how she’ll feel when she realizes that Grandmother’s the Star Group Queen), whilst Grandmother approves of what she sees although she has to remember to look angry because of the ruse. Gong Shim lays on the compliments, thinking to herself that she’s probably overdoing it and she’s doomed, and then she leads Grandmother into Dan Tae’s apartment and sets to putting it to rights. She mistakes Grandmother’s sadness at how Dan Tae has to live for her being uncomfortable and sets to trying to make her feel more comfortable. Everything she does just makes things worse though but Grandmother’s not there for that and sets to grilling Gong Shim as she would a potential daughter-in-law. She notes that their Zodiac signs are a perfect match and then blurts out a question asking Gong Shim what it is that she likes about Dan Tae. Grandmother recovers quickly though by making it seem like she’s angry at Dan Tae’s delay and soon Gong Shim’s defending Dan Tae’s work ethics and has totally forgotten about the slip-up. She heads out to go get Grandmother something to eat and bumps into Goo Nam who grumbles about them turning him into an errand boy and snarks about her and Dan Tae’s romance. Gong Shim tries to awkwardly cover it up and Grandmother gives a quiet laugh (trust me Grandmother, she’s even more adorable on a better day). She’s also impressed when Gong Shim makes a delicious meal and then takes to asking Gong Shim questions about Dan Tae like whether or not women find him attractive (Gong Shim answers yes. He’s a good-looking guy) and if women would want to date a guy who lives in such a small apartment. Gong Shim answers that money can always be earned but a guy like Dan Tae who can be confident, even in the face of wealth is very rare (I agree). Grandmother then asks her what annoys her the most about Dan Tae. Gong Shim mentions his picking up food from the ground and concludes that Dan Tae must have been homeless before. The words have Grandmother looking sad and Gong Shim offers her a massage to cheer her up. The massage works wonders and Grandmother is soon fast asleep.
6. Gong Mi’s a big fat liar and the writer continues to tease us
Whilst Grandmother meets with Dan Tae and praises him on how wonderful Gong Shim is, Gong Shim has a drink with Gong Mi, who lies that the rumor around the office is that Gong Shim got her job through Joon Soo. Gong Shim points out that it can’t be so because everyone knows that Joon Soo had nothing to do with the recruitment process. Gong Mi though calls her naive and states that everyone’s whispering about it behind Gong Shim’s back (what a bitch!) and so Gong Shim should conduct herself better around Joon Soo (girl, no matter what you plan, it isn’t going to work because he’s not interested in your fake ass self). Gong Shim sighs as she says it’s really not like that, but buys into Gong Mi’s lies. Back at home, Gong Shim meets Dan Tae and warns him against misbehaving and getting Grandmother angry again. She does smile though that she thinks she made a good first impression and so if ever Dan Tae offends Grandmother again, she’s willing to help soothe the ruffled waters. Dan Tae’s delighted but his smile slips when Gong Shim mentions how suspiciously Grandmother kept asking her questions, like she was being interviewed or something. Dan Tae glosses it over that Grandmother’s just a naturally curious person and asks how Gong Shim had gotten her to fall asleep. Gong Shim replies that she’d given Grandmother a massage and then gives Dan Tae a massage to show him how relaxing it can be. But Dan Tae’s ticklish and soon enough Gong Shim’s tickling him till they trip and she lands on top of him, with their faces extremely close. But the kiss doesn’t happen (Seriously writer?! Must we wait till episode 20?!) and Gong Shim runs away whilst Dan Tae tries using exercise as a distraction.
7. Joon Soo learns the truth
Joon Soo meets with Dae Chul to ask him if he’d been the one to buy off Kim Gil Bong. Dae Chul denies doing it and asks if Dan Tae’s looking for Gil Bong. Joon Soo agrees (seriously though? Dude stop telling him stuff. Do you have diarrhea of the mouth or something?). Dae Chul then mentions that Joon Soo should just get rid of Dan Tae since it was Joon Soo that had brought Dan Tae in, in the first place. After Joon Soo leaves, Dae Chul chuckles that Gil Bong is his insurance just in case Joon Soo tries to harm him. Meanwhile, Dan Tae spots Joon Soo’s license car plate number and writes it down. He then heads to the hospital to confirm that the car had been there and then using the time Joon Soo’s car had been parked in the parking garage locates Joon Soo passing through the hallway on the CCTV footage. He prints out the image with murder in his eyes (dude, why not just check for other faces you might recognize. I’m sure you’ll be able to spot Dae Chul). Joon Soo on the other hand, heads to the data recovery center where he’s informed that they were able to retrieve one outgoing number from the phone. The number turns out to be Dan Tae’s aunt’s number and when she and Dan Tae demand as to why Joon Soo had tried to kill Dan Tae’s father, Joon Soo realizes that Dae Chul’s also guilty of attempted.
8. Dae Chul frames Tea Hee
Immediately, Joon Soo meets with Dae Chul and screams at him in the Star Group lobby, demanding to know why Dae Chul had tried to kill Dan Tae’s dad. Dae Chul invites Joon Soo out to talk in private. In Dae Chul’s office, Joon Soo snaps that he’d told Dae Chul to not do anything and now Dae Chul’s up and attempted to kill Dan Tae’s father. Dae Chul tries to feign innocence but when Joon Soo mentions that he’d tailed him on the day he’d gone to the hospital to attempt to kill Soo Yong, Dae Chul drops the pretense and asks Joon Soo what he intends to do. Joon Soo tells him of his plan to reveal everything to Dan Tae immediately. Dae Chul’s not concerned though as he simply calls Joon Soo’s mother and puts her on speakerphone, meaning Joon Soo’s able to hear his mother ask Dae Chul if he’s handled the Soo Yong situation. She asks if he’s made it so Soo Yong won’t be able to say anything anymore and Dae Chul ends the call then spins a tale for Joon Soo, telling him that the idea of kidnapping Joon Pyo and the attempted murder was all his mother’s doing and if Joon Soo wants his mother to go to jail for her crimes, then he can go ahead and tell everything to Dan Tae. Joon Soo’s horrified and decides on his next course of action: take a trip out of town (dude, no matter where you run to, everything will still catch up with you eventually. Stay there and fight. Or even better, talk to your mother about it. You’re a grown man, act like it and talk to her. Sheesh!).
9. Gong Shim and Dan Tae have their first couple fight and then make up (Finally!)
Gong Shim talks with Dan Tae later that night, talking about her surprise that Joon Soo’s out of town. Dan Tae uses the opportunity to ask Gong Shim to quit working at Joon Soo’s company. The request hurts Gong Shim who reminds Dan Tae of how happy she’d been to get a job at a place where she can finally draw and she wonders how Dan Tae can be so selfish and think only of himself instead of her. She wonders if he ever thinks of her and when he says nothing and just stares at her with sad eyes, she figures she was right and walks away. Later that night Dan Tae finds Gong Shim waiting for him on the rooftop and when he tells her that he doesn’t want her to misunderstand him, Gong Shim cuts in and asks him why he’s so stupid and can’t get it (hahaha. He is stupid. But for entirely different reasons). She informs him that she’s stupid enough not to be able to multitask and can only like one guy at a time and the guy she likes is Dan Tae and so Dan Tae should stop being confused. She points out that she must look really foolish at the moment and Dan Tae smiles and pulls her into a hug. He pulls back and they both give shy grins (Gah! So cute) and then he gives her a light kiss on the lips. She’s stunned and Dan Tae leans in for a longer kiss (whoot whoot! Finally!).
10. Dae Chul gives himself away
The next morning, Dae Chul spots Dan Tae leaving work early and comments on it. Dan Tae replies that his father’s sick and in the hospital and Dae Chul brings up the fact that Dan Tae must be lonely now that Joon Soo’s gone. Dan Tae states that he’s alright and Dae Chul offers his help should Dan Tae need it, stating that it must be hard to nurse someone in the ICU (oops. You just gave yourself away buster. He never mentioned that his father’s in the ICU). Dae Chul leaves but Dan Tae realizes that he never mentioned that his father was in Intensive Care. He heads to the hospital where he checks the CCTV in the ICU hallway and sure enough, Dae Chul was also in the hospital. Next he heads to work and checks through Dae Chul’s employment records where he sees that Dae Chul was in the same military unit as his father. He then visits his dad’s friend (the one who’d given Dae Chul the information on how to locate Soo Yong) and asks him about Dae Chul. The man confirms that they were all very good friends and with everything roiling in his head and him remembering that he’d figured that the person with the butterfly tattoo was most likely the culprit, Dan Tae heads straight to Dae Chul’s office and pulls up his sleeves. As he spots the butterfly tattoo, he looks straight at Dae Chul as he states that he’s the culprit (Finally!).
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because Gong Shim’s worked so hard and suffered for so long and finally has a job at a place where she likes to work and now Gong Mi’s messing with her head and feeding her lies all because Joon Soo’s friendly with Gong Shim and Gong Mi’s jealous. Girl wins the WORST sister of the year award and deserves to be bitchslapped. Maybe that would have her thinking about her life and deciding to be a better sister to Gong Shim.
Headache inducing moment:
I can never understand why anyone would think it’s a good idea to inform the baddie about their plans. Because seriously, if Joon Soo had just kept his bloody mouth shut and just gone to meet Dan Tae and explained everything to him, rather than blurting everything out to Dae Chul first, then we won’t be in this mess and this whole secret won’t still be ongoing into episode 18. Like seriously though. Urgh!
This episode’s a Ginger Whiskey Sour. The unnecessarily dragged out mystery leaves a bitter and sour taste and drags the drama down. Thankfully though, Gong Shim’s still a breath of fresh air and awesome in everything she does and so gives the episode the much needed boost. Now if only the writer can remember that what we signed up for was Beautiful Gong Shim and not Finding who kidnapped Dan Tae even though everyone watching knows and are fast losing interest, then this drama will go back to being a delight and we can all continue rooting for Gong Shim and her relationship with Dan Tae because they’re the sweetest thing ever. Meaning, writer-nim, please wrap up the unnecessary mystery in the next episode. Thank you.
