Hong Joo still has her lying silver tongue, meaning Sunjo’s back to being an idiot and everyone’s turned against Seo Ri. Queen Shim is back to being a figurehead, Hyun Seo’s still under Hong Joo’s control, Poong Yeon has been given a task he cannot get out of and our two lovers plus their trusty bodyguard are on the run. Stay safe my lovelies. Stay safe.
Top 10 Moments:
- Hong Joo just can’t die
We start with several men in the royal guard, searching and confiscating all the items in Hong Joo’s lair. From the black magic blade to her witch’s cauldron, all the whilst Sunjo reels out her crimes. She kneels in judgement in the middle of the king’s court, so silent that even Sunjo wonders what’s happened to her tongue or if maybe she’s feeling remorseful for all she’s done. When she replies that she is, Sunjo calls her crimes unforgivable anyway, and states that she will be burnt at the stake. Hong Joo merely thanks him for letting her go out in such a spectacular way (what will be more spectacular will be the ripping you apart, courtesy of the black magic way. I’m still looking forward to that). Except, it turns out she can’t die quite yet because Yo Gwang comes rushing in to inform Jun and Seo Ri that Hong Joo has to remain alive until Seo Ri’s finished lighting all the candles and the curse can return to Hong Joo (but the curse didn’t come from Hong Joo though. It was Hae Ran’s prophecy. Or maybe they mean because the curse was a result of Hong Joo’s black magic practice. I get it now). When he tags in the line that Seo Ri can’t break the curse if Hong Joo’s dead, Jun goes running to Sunjo to beg him not to kill Hong Joo. Sunjo is all of us, frustrated that Hong Joo still has to remain alive and when he asks Jun exactly how he’s meant to make Hong Joo atone if he can’t kill her because death to her will be death to the princess, Jun promises to get Hong Joo to atone for her crimes. Meanwhile, in Hong Joo’s cell, she smiles.
2. Queen Shim’s still stuck on the Seo Ri can’t be with Jun refrain
Seo Ri has a dream within which Hae Ran repeatedly tells her that the baby will soon be in danger. She jerks awake, and Queen Shim who’s by her side presses to know what’s wrong. Seo Ri tells her about the ticking clock and that she only has ten days left. She begs Queen Shim to let her be with Jun for the time she has left so they can work towards lighting the candles together. Queen Shim agrees and sends for Jun. Jun on the other hand is up in the mountains, dreaming about being with Seo Ri and not realizing till he wakes that it’s Yo Gwang he’s been cuddling with and smiling at (hahahaha). Yo Gwang teases him for dreaming of Seo Ri but then drops the very serious news that Queen Shim wants to see Jun. At their meeting, Queen Shim thanks Jun for all he’s done but reiterates the, you cannot be with the princess speech (this is starting to get really annoying). Jun tells her that he just wants to help Seo Ri break her curse and Queen Shim tells him that she expects him to leave Seo Ri after the curse is broken then. Meanwhile, up at the Imperial Taoist temple, Poong Yeon is remembering Sunjo’s warning not to betray the royal family as Sunjo is very much aware of what Hong Joo’s plans for the royal family are.
3. Sunjo’s child is in danger and Seo Ri just gave away her secret
Sunjo and his wife: Queen Park, meet with Queen Shim to tell her the good news: Queen Park is pregnant. Queen Shim is delighted at the news and reminds Queen Park to be extra careful seeing that she’s so young (pfft. She doesn’t look that young to me). Seo Ri comes in to visit Queen Shim and Sunjo’s noticeably not so thrilled with her presence although he doesn’t say anything. He and Queen Park leave and Queen Shim tells Seo Ri the news. Seo Ri’s initially happy until she remembers her dream and Hae Ran telling her that the baby is in danger (uh-oh). She’s so lost in thoughts that she doesn’t hear Jun calling her. When she finally does hear him, she doesn’t tell him of her dream or her gut feeling. Jun who had been thinking of Queen Shim’s words pushes them out of his mind as he brings up the fact that all that’s left for everyone to truly be at peace is for them to light all the candles and break Seo Ri’s curse, meaning, the search to grant wishes is back on. Except, when they ask Soon Deuk, and hear her wish that she wants to be the richest person in Joseon and play all day, they sigh at the futility of it all (hahaha), and Yo Gwang’s own wish of everything ending peacefully for them all isn’t any better either (hahahaha). Soon, Soon Deuk and Yo Gwang are bickering whilst Jun and Seo Ri smile as they watch. But Seo Ri has an unpleasant thought and her smile falls as she looks worried. She’s right to be worried too because a masked man enters Queen Park’s chambers with the black magic lantern (Drats. They should have burned the thing as well). Thankfully, Seo Ri catches him in the act, and is able to subdue the black magic that was just about to enter Queen Park. The masked man who turns out to be evil Hyun Seo takes off running and Seo Ri follows him, unaware that one of the palace maids who spots her, follows them. When evil Hyun Seo turns and tries to walk menacingly towards Seo Ri, she sends him flying with her telekinetic abilities. Unfortunately, the act is spotted by the maid who falls down in shock and horror. Seo Ri though, still doesn’t notice (well, there goes your plan to have Seo Ri have a normal palace life, Queen Shim).
4. Seo Ri issues a challenge and Hong Joo proves she can still cause trouble without black magic
Seo Ri storms the prison cell where Hong Joo’s being held and has her hands stretched out, wanting to kill her. She stops at the last moment though, conscious of the guards and maids around and accuses Hong Joo of still using Hyun Seo who had tries to hurt Queen Park. Hong Joo smiles, stating that she isn’t capable of doing anything, what with her locked up and her black magic gone. When Hong Joo tells Seo Ri to kill her, Seo Ri tells Hong Joo that Hong Joo won’t be done in by a mere stabbing or strangling, rather, Seo Ri intends to break the curse so Hong Joo can suffer a fate worse than death. Hong Joo smiles as she states that they will see who will break the curse then, although her smile drops the minute Seo Ri leaves. That night, Hong Joo’s henchgirls put up posters all over town, decrying Seo Ri as the cursed princess posses with demonic power, who’s responsible for the plague in the country. The word soon spreads and even the palace maids start gossiping about it, with the one who’d seen Seo Ri send Hyun Seo flying the previous night, telling the others of the tale. At the king’s court, the ministers bring up the rumors about the princess and when Queen Shim storms in, requesting that Sunjo not let this issue sully the royal family’s name, the ministers point to the fact that the posters are everywhere and the rumors can’t be quelled. Sunjo then points out the fact that all this is happening because the princess was brought into the royal family (not again) and tells Queen Shim that their best bet is to wait out the rumor. He does add though that if she feels she must ‘do’ something, then she should go right ahead, but warns her that she must take responsibility for the repercussions.
5. Queen Shim tries to salvage the situation and Poong Yeon’s still recovering
Queen Shim’s way of helping to quell the rumors is meeting Poong Yeon and asking him to offer prayers for the cleansing of the land and for the princess, as the head of the Imperial Taoist branch. She also wants Seo Ri to participate so the people can get a glimpse of her and see that she’s trying to help and is not the cause of their misery. Poong Yeon tries to raise his objections but Queen Shim overrides them, pointing out that this is the one way Poong Yeon can protect the royal family and the princess (woman, must everything be about the royal family?). Poong Yeon finally agrees and then goes to meet Seo Ri who was going on a walk. He asks her if she’s alright and teases her for the depressed expression on her face, then promises to save her. Except, he collapses after walking just a short distance and when they’re back in the temple, Seo Ri has him show her his wounds so she can treat them. Except, when he pulls apart his robe, Seo Ri sees that the wound is festering with black magic. Poong Yeon tells her not to worry about it and apologizes for having started it all by taking her out of the black forest that day. Unaware that Jun is watching their conversation, Seo Ri tells Poong Yeon that that day was the happiest day of her life as she’d gotten to see the world for the first time. Poong Yeon brings up the feelings he’d had for her and how they’d almost led to him doing a terrible thing, Seo Ri tries to speak but Poong Yeon cuts her off, begging her not to tell him to quickly get over his feelings because he’s loved her for a long time. He tells her to hurry and break the curse so he can get started on the process of letting her go. After Seo Ri leaves, Poong Yeon runs into Jun who he asks if he’s around to see whether Poong Yeon’s turned evil. Poong Yeon sighs and then asks Jun the same question Queen Shim had asked him: what he intends to do once Seo Ri’s broken the curse. He warns Jun that should he and Seo Ri stay together, they will both still be in danger and when Jun tells him to get well quickly, Poong Yeon invites Jun to be a part of the cleansing ceremony, figuring out that Seo Ri will be scared and would need someone she trusts, there with her.
6. Hyun Seo breaks Hong Joo out of prison
Evil Hyun Seo goes to break Hong Joo out of prison (Wait, is that the black magic sword I see by his side) and Hong Joo smiles to see him, asking if people had thought that she would be out just because she’s lost her black magic. She points out that people do despicable acts because they want to and blame black magic because they want to be absolved of the blame. She smiles again as she wonders what they will blame now that the black magic’s gone and tells Hyun Seo that he should see for himself with his own two eyes. Hyun Seo looks down at their clasped hands (so what? He’s doing this of his own volition? But we saw his eyes flash).
7. Hong Joo’s plan is successful
Queen Shim gets Seo Ri prepared for the cleansing ceremony and warns her to be careful of her behavior in the midst of the citizens. Soon, they all head out to the temple where the citizenry are surprised to see Seo Ri looking normal after they’d been told that she had white hair and looked scary. Soon Deuk who is there to make a quick buck is even more surprised to see that Seo Ri is the princess and spots Jun by her side. Even as she’s wondering what Yo Gwang is doing, performing the ritual alongside Poong Yeon, and Sol Gae is amazed to see Poong Yeon leading the ceremony, we see Hong Joo’s henchgirls heading to the ceremony with Hyun Seo leading them. They soon arrive there and set to attacking everyone gathered there. A sword is leveled at Sunjo and then the henchgirls train their arrows at the people. Seo Ri rises upon seeing the sight, wanting to use her powers to help. Queen Shim begs her not to use her powers. However, Hyun Seo shows up and orders the henchgirls to shoot their arrows at Jun. When they set out to do so, Seo Ri isn’t able to hold back anymore and she uses her telekinesis to send the henchgirls flying. The people immediately start decrying her a witch and rush to get her. The guards, Poong Yeon and Jun immediately move to protect Seo Ri and Jun grabs Seo Ri and runs away with her. Hyun Seo notices and follows them. Seo Ri though is intent on running away alone and when Jun still insists on following her, she throws him up into the air and slams him into a tree (ouch). With that done, she runs away. Although she doesn’t go very far as she heads back to the temple up in the mountains. Jun comes to see her, but leaves without saying a word to her (awww. My magic couple. Don’t let Hong Joo succeed in separating the two of you).
8. Everyone keeps coming to see Hong Joo (why??????)
Poong Yeon heads straight to Hong Joo’s cell grabbing her by the neck as he wonders why they didn’t just kill her. But Hong Joo is resting pretty as she knows that they can’t kill her because of Seo Ri. Poong Yeon can’t hurt her either as he doubles over in pain from his wounds. Hong Joo then asks him why he’s killing himself to serve the royal family who would only discard him when they’re done with him. Poong Yeon isn’t willing to listen to her lies and walks away, although Hong Joo tells his departing back that he will still end up doing what she wants him to do. Meanwhile, Sunjo tired of the people hanging outside the palace to cry that they be given the princess, finally goes to meet Hong Joo who he asks exactly what she’s planning. Hong Joo though is of the opinion that she has nothing to lose unlike Sunjo who has everything to lose. Her suggestion therefore is for Sunjo to toss out Seo Ri and blame everything that’s happening in the country on her, after all, all the people need is someone to blame. She tells him to bring Seo Ri to her as she’s the only one who can kill the princess and tells Sunjo to make a choice, Seo Ri or the throne. Sunjo leaves without saying a word and Hong Joo smiles (Seriously though. Must we deal with three more episodes of this bitch? Someone, squash her already!).
9. Hong Joo’s back in the game and Jun suggests they run away from it all
Whilst Poong Yeon is giving Yo Gwang the message to find Seo Ri and Jun, Queen Shim’s begging Sunjo not to follow through with his decision, but Sunjo’s not listening. Even Poong Yeon begging him not to do what he’s planning has Sunjo replying that he doesn’t want to lose anything. Next thing we see, he’s meeting Hong Joo in her cell and telling her to capture the princess and kill her. Hong Joo smiles at the command. Over at the mountain, Yo Gwang delivers the message to Jun who meets with Seo Ri who’s depressed and wants to run away from it all, to a place where she will just be alone. Jun, who is always awesome, extends his hands and suggests they run away together to somewhere far away. Seo Ri takes him up on his offer which is why when Hong Joo gets to the temple, nobody’s there. Although she does notice the five unlit candles. When she gets back to the palace, she asks for Sunjo to give her the force of his soldiers. Sunjo wonders why he should give her that when he doesn’t trust her but Hong Joo preys on his fears of the people turning their anger towards him especially because he hadn’t been born with the right to rule and hadn’t left any legacy behind. She tells him that the people have given him a scapegoat in Seo Ri who they blame for all their misfortunes and should he execute her, then he will be hailed a champion. At the words, Sunjo concedes and gives her control of the soldiers. Hong Joo though isn’t content with just that and she also asks that Sunjo give the command to Poong Yeon to execute Seo Ri when she’s caught (seriously though. When will someone get rid of this bitch?).
10. The stage is set
Sunjo meets with Poong Yeon and gives him the order to use his holy fire to burn Seo Ri. Even Poong Yeon pointing out that Sunjo putting all the blame on Seo Ri wouldn’t make him the leader he wants to be, isn’t enough to get Sunjo to change his mind as he’s instead focused on the fact that he can finally gain the people’s recognition that he craves (what an utter scumbag). He then tells Poong Yeon that should Poong Yeon fail to carry out his orders, then he will personally kill Poong Yeon himself. Meanwhile, back in her temple, Hong Joo looks through the Grimoire of curses and calls for Hyun Seo, telling him that she’s sure that that isn’t the end of the book. She tells Hyun Seo to stop fighting her will and orders him to bring her the last page of the book. Hyun Seo leaves to carry out her command.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
And here I thought, you’d grown some sense and learned from your mistakes. Turns out, you’re still the immature, fickle, flakey king that is easily played by Hong Joo. Dude, you redefine the very definition of wish-wash.
Headache inducing moment:
Because honestly, I expected them to have done away with Hong Joo’s tongue first, especially because she knows just want to say to get what she wants, and seeing Sunjo who we all know is a weak-willed idiot, there with her in the cell had the migraine starting as I could already tell that he will cave and Hong Joo will win out again. Fuck this shit. What the hell is wrong with people in this show. Argh!
This episode’s a whiskey sour. It’s basic and classic Hong Joo using her wiles and tongue and getting what she wants and it leaves me with the sour taste of ARGH! WHY DOES ANYONE STILL LISTEN TO THIS BITCH?
