Seo Woo has turned being delusional into an art form, but her pain at losing her patient is very real and goes a long way into humanizing her. Hye Jung’s step-mother is still a piece of work as is Myung Joon and Sung Jong with their scheming. Ji Hong and his father continue to be adorable and sane and Yoon Do keeps falling for Hye Jung without knowing it yet. Hye Jung finally gets Mal Soon’s medical file although that gift is accompanied with something even sweeter.
Top 10 Moments:
- They all survived. Thank heavens!
As Ji Hong races to the hospital, he tells us in voiceover that you don’t know how dear something is to you till you lose it. We see child Ji Hong, excitedly running home and smiling as he notices the food his mother had left for him. As child Ji Hong eats, adult Ji Hong tells us that he had no idea that it was the little things in life that really mattered. We cut to child Ji Hong covered in blood as he begs the doctor to save his mother who’s flatlined. Adult Ji Hong tells us that he wasn’t able to do anything to save her and so he detests anything that destroys his everyday life. And then we pick up with Ji Hong entering the room and seeing the blood. Hye Jung though is fine as it turns out that the suspicious man had stabbed himself. Meanwhile Ji Hong upturns his anxiety and anger at Yoon Do who he accuses of not handling the situation well. Soon they’re both arguing and it takes Hye Jung, the cool head in the situation to interrupt and get Yoon Do focused on the mobster boss and Ji Hong calling general surgery to operate on suspicious guy. Both the boss and suspicious guy make it thankfully and after Pa Ran takes his time to flirt with Hye Jung (hahaha. Ji Hong’s jealous face is so cute) and Hye Jung points out that Ji Hong had been just a bit harsh on Yoon Do, Ji Hong pulls her into a hug and tells her thank you (awwwww. He’s telling you thank you for surviving Hye Jung. Isn’t that cute?).
2. Yoon Do the savior and a puppy lost in love
Hye Jung checks on the mobster boss who is thankfully doing well. Whilst there, Kyung Joon tells her that the word around is that Yoon Do saved her from the attacker (hahaha. Well, he kind of did, in a way. With the whole grabbing the guy’s leg and all). Hye Jung though brings up Kyung Joon’s thesis and that immediately shuts him up. Outside the room, she runs into Yoon Do who immediately takes off the minute he spots her (hahaha. Yoon Do running whilst using the sleeves on his surgical coat to try and hide his face is so hilarious). She catches up with him in no time and asks him what it is that he’d wanted to tell her. Yoon Do’s forgotten all about the matter however and Hye Jung thanks him for coming to her rescue. He doesn’t believe her though as he figures he’d made the situation worse and states that he’s embarrassed because he hadn’t kicked away the knife or gotten stabbed instead of her (awwww). He walks away all mopey and Hye Jung runs after him to show him some of her fighting moves (which frighten him because he thinks she wants to hit him. Hahaha). She tells him that she’s a professional fighter and Yoon Do grumbles-asks her if she’s saying so so he wouldn’t feel bad about getting beat up. Hye Jung agrees, thanks him for the way he’d helped her and leaves, because she is on night duty after all. Yoon Do watches her leave as his heart beats faster (yup. Officially joined the Hye Jung love train and fan club :D).
3. The plastics (family) and their petty squabbles and Ji Hong gets started on a quest to make Yoon Do’s life miserable (hahaha)
Myung Joon and Sung Jong have a game of golf where they delight in the prospect of Chairman Hong getting ousted from the hospital and the thought of turning Kookil into a for profit organization rather than a medical center. Back at home, Myung Joon, Seo Woo and Seo Woo’s mother: Ji Young, settle down together for a meal with Ji Young encouraging Seo Woo to bring Yoon Do home so they can start planning the wedding (hahaha. Delusional much?) and Seo Woo telling her mother right back that she and Yoon Do haven’t started dating yet. She claims it’s because she likes to chase the men she’s interested in (even though we all know it’s because Yoon Do won’t give her the time of the day) and Myung Joon interrupts with talk of the wedding again and them setting a date. Seo Woo finally admits that she wants to marry for love and although she loves Yoon Do, he doesn’t love her back. Myung Joon tells her to do everything to make Yoon Do hers and that she shouldn’t concern herself about love anyway because it’s something that fades the minute she has it in her hands (wow. What a great life lesson, jackass). Ji Young decries the words, stating that women can gain happiness in their marriage and Myung Joon scoffs, then tells Seo Woo that women like Ji Young might gain happiness in marriage but women like Seo Woo see the bigger picture. Meanwhile, over at Yoon Do’s place, Ji Hong points out that Yoon Do’s pretty rude, something that Pa Ran doesn’t agree with. Except, when Pa Ran suggests that they follow Yoon Do to the hospital via Yoon Do’s car, because Pa Ran’s not at the house and Ji Hong’s still in the States, Yoon Do whispers to his uncle that he doesn’t like Ji Hong. Pa Ran immediately blurts it out to Ji Hong who starts speaking familiarly to Yoon Do, stating that any nephew of his friend automatically becomes his nephew as well (hahaha). As if that’s not bad enough, Ji Hong insists on going along in Yoon Do’s car as well and soon both he and Pa Ran are in the backseat of the car. Pa Ran’s sleeping off a hangover, giving Ji Hong and Yoon Do a chance to talk. Yoon Do complains that he isn’t Ji Hong’s nephew and Ji Hong admits that he might have been too harsh on Yoon Do the previous night. Yoon Do, recognizing it as an apology wonders what that makes him then (for holding onto the grudge, I think) and Ji Hong replies that it makes him a narrow-minded fool (hahaha).
4. Hye Jung asks for Ji Hong’s help in locating Mal Soon’s medical records
Back at the hospital, Yoon Do finds Hye Jung waiting outside Ji Hong’s office with a plant in hand. He asks her several questions and then turns things around to ask her if she’s not curious about him or interested in asking him questions right back, seeing as that’s how people converse (hahaha. Says the guy who said he isn’t interested in her personal life, when they first met), When Hye Jung asks him why she should be, the smile on his face drops as he tells her that he himself doesn’t know why and then he runs into his office (hahaha. Awkward Yoon Do is so cute). Ji Hong finally gets to his office after doing his rounds, and invites Hye Jung in. She hands him the potted plant she’s brought along as a congratulatory gift for him joining Kookil hospital and then admits that she’d brought it as a bribe as well. Next she brings out Mal Soon’s case number and asks Ji Hong for his help in getting access to Mal Soon’s medical records because she can’t access it herself due to the fact that she’s not a permanent employee yet. Ji Hong realizes that that’s the reason why Hye Jung had turned down the staff position at her previous hospital and tears the piece of paper with the number on it, then tells Hye Jung to forget it all. When Hye Jung asks him how he expects her to forget, he points her to the fact that she too is a surgeon and should know that medical accidents can occur. Hye Jung answers though that she thought she would understand Myung Joon once she became a doctor and realizes that she understands him even less. She recalls the words he’s spoken to her that day and tells Ji Hong that no doctor should say that at the death of a patient (I agree). When Ji Hong asks her what she would do with the information once she finds it, Hye Jung replies that she will decide that after she finds it. Next Ji Hong reminds her that the statue of limitations has passed and Hye Jung reminds him of his words that accidents can’t be restored or amended but the heart can be. When she asks him why he tore up the note, Ji Hong apologizes and tells her that he just wants her to live a normal life. But Hye Jung has never had a normal life and informs him that if he won’t help her, then she would either find someone who will or hack into the security system. She finds a quiet corner to cry and is met there by Yoon Do who doesn’t notice that she’s been crying (he just thinks that she looked like she’d been crying) and who informs her that the police want to take her statement. Unknown to her though, Ji Hong tapes up the torn sheet of paper and looks up Mal Soon’s case number except even he is denied access to the files (you’re just making yourself look even more suspicious Myung Joon).
5. Yoon Do calls out Seo Woo and Seo Woo has a friend in the restaurant Ahjumma
Seo Woo catches up on the hospital gossip with Young Kook who tells her that word around is that Hye Jung saved the mobster boss. She scoffs and doesn’t believe it, but pays close attention to Hye Jung and Yoon Do coming in together. When she expresses her sympathy that Yoon Do’s been roped into the Hye Jung created mess and states that she hopes Hye Jung gets kicked out soon just like Yoon Do wanted, Yoon Do replies that he doesn’t want that anymore because Hye Jung turned out to be pretty decent. Seo Woo scoffs as she asks if Yoon Do’s maybe falling for Hye Jung. Yoon Do spins the question around and asks Seo Woo why she’s so hostile to Hye Jung. Seo Woo feeds the same woe is me tale about her being traumatized and Hye Jung being the bully who had to be expelled because of it. When she tells Yoon Do that she kept it from him because she didn’t want to spill out Hye Jung’s personal affairs, Yoon Do tells her that Hye Jung already told him all about it, plus he’s sure that Seo Woo wasn’t actually bullied by Hye Jung (booyah!). He walks away and Young Kook tells Seo Woo about the rumors flying around that Hye Jung had saved Yoon Do from the suspicious man. Seo Woo thus leaves to meet Yoon Do who’s checking up on the restaurant ahjumma and after squabbling with her like old friends, demands an apology from Yoon Do for thinking that she’s not the type of girl who would be bullied in school. Yoon Do gives her a half-hearted apology and even the restaurant ahjumma comments on it not sounding sincere. He comments on the two of them being best friends, gives his apology, turns it half-hearted at the last moment (hahaha) and runs away, leaving the restaurant ahjumma to tell Seo Woo that she admires the way she’s living her life (woman if you know half the things Seo Woo’s done, you wouldn’t say that). She also asks Seo Woo to have her son bring the witch to see her.
6. Ga Jin is a grade A bitch
Soon Hee comes to Kookil to hand out fliers for Sooni Hawaii and bumps into Ga Jin who she doesn’t recognize as Hye Jung’s step-mother. Ga Jin is rude and unpleasant and makes an indirect dig at Soon Hee not being a doctor (hahaha. I can just imagine her face when she learns that Hye Jung is now a doctor and a successful one at that) all the whilst praising her daughter for working towards getting an educational degree. By the time Hye Jung comes out to meet Soon Hee, Ga Jin’s gone and both Soon Hee and I are stumped that Soon Hee didn’t get a chance to rub the fact that her friend’s a doctor in Ga Jin’s face. Soon Hee then heads to the residents room where Kyung Joon is his annoyingly rude self and Young Kook flirts with her because he thinks she’s way younger than she claimed. Hye Jung however isn’t able to get away from meeting Ga Jin as Ga Jin’s directed to her office for a consultation. Hye Jung recognizes her first and when Ga Jin recognizes her, she’s stunned at how it’s possible that Hye Jung’s become a doctor. Hye Jung gives nothing away as she asks Ga Jin to go get an MRI done. Outside Hye Jung’s office, Yoo Na, Hye Jung’s half-sister’s surprised that Hye Jung acted like she didn’t know Ga Jin. This spurs Ga Jin on to storm into Hye Jung’s office, whilst she’s just about to start a consultation with a patient, and demand why Hye Jung treated her, her mother like that (bitch, since when did you become her mother? Did you smoke something?), especially in the presence of the people gathered. Hye Jung corrects her that she was never in anyway her mother (you tell her Hye Jung!) and she shouldn’t think that Hye Jung would lie and treat her better just because there are people gathered in the room. Ga Jin then gets into a snit and demands that she wants another doctor to check her out (good riddance. Don’t let the door hit you on your way out).
7. Everyone keeps giving Seo Woo horrible advice and Ji Hong turns to Chairman Hong for help
A woman (the witch?) comes to see restaurant ahjumma and when she draws close to restaurant ahjumma, the latter spits in her face (hahaha). The man she came with (the son?) is pissed whilst the witch claims that it was probably because of restaurant ahjumma’s temper that her brain burst (what the?! What a bitch). The words don’t get to restaurant ahjumma and she laughs instead. The man and the woman leave and restaurant Ahjumma tells Seo Woo about how unfair life is, what with her husband cheating on her with the witch (ha, so ex-husband and his new wife then) and her giving them an amicable divorce and yet she is still the one who falls ill whilst the new wife is glowing with health. She then tells Seo Woo to make sure that no one takes Yoon Do away from her because nice people never get nice endings and the world stands up for the wicked ones (uhhh, ahjumma, you do know that SHE is one of the wicked ones, right?). Meanwhile, Hye Jung’s thinking of Mal Soon and calls Ji Hong who’s out fishing with Chairman Hong (I swear, I love their family life). When she learns that he’s out with his father, she tells him not to bother and hangs up. Ji Hong though knows why she called and gives Chairman Hong the paper with Mal Soon’s patient number and asks Chairman Hong to help him locate the patient’s medical records. Unaware that Ji Hong is helping her after all, Hye Jung brings yet another family member’s matter to Yoon Do: Ga Jin’s MRI scans. She asks Yoon Do to operate on Ga Jin in her place but Yoon Do is too conscious of hospital policy that states that he can’t operate on a patient that isn’t his. When he asks her if the scans belong to a family member, Hye Jung tells him that she wishes it was so (awwww. She just wants a family to call hers). She leaves but bumps into Seo Woo on the way out. Seo Woo is immediately curious as to what she’s doing with Yoon Do and Yoon Do asks her if she feels inferior to Hye Jung in some way (girl, if people keep asking you that, you should check yourself and be honest. Hmmm. Maybe you need Jun and Seo Ri to brew you a truth potion huh?). Seo Woo denies it and Yoon Do points out that she keeps showing him a different side to her.
8. Everything is still all about Seo Woo and the two puppies meet
Hye Jung and Soon Hee have lunch at the hospital cafeteria and Soon Hee being her easily excitable self is impressed at the food. She’s even more excited when she hears that Hye Jung saw her step-mother and assumes that the woman is old, poor and sick, meaning karma won out in the end. Hye Jung isn’t in high spirits though and confesses that she doesn’t want to treat Ga Jin but Yoon Do wouldn’t do it either. Whilst they’re talking Seo Woo enters the cafeteria with Young Gook and spots Soon Hee. She leaves before anyone can see her and grumbles about the fact that Soon Hee used to be her friend and dumped her for Hye Jung (again? Seriously girl, it’s not always about you. Or did you forget that you left Soon Hee to rot in jail?). Young Kook tries to correct her that one can’t have ownership over friends but Seo Woo isn’t willing to listen and Young Kook points out that that’s what she has in common with restaurant ahjumma. Seo Woo doesn’t see why the victims (she really thinks she’s a victim. Ha!) are being blamed and Young Kook warns her about being too close to a patient. Back in the cafeteria, Kang Soo comes running in to tell Hye Jung that they’re are thinking of throwing her a welcome party. Soon hee immediately takes the opportunity to market Sooni Hawaii and soon our two puppies and members of the Hye Jung fanclub are getting along just great. After lunch, Hye Jung is back in her office when Seo Woo walks in, armed with the knowledge that Hye Jung’s stepmother caused trouble. She tells Hye Jung that her life must be so exhausting what with the mobster boss and now her stepmother showing up. She asks Hye Jung why she got Yoon Do involved in the mess and Hye Jung calls her out on her choice of words. Seo Woo feeds her a line of her trying to reach out and make things better between them and Hye Jung tells her not to get the wrong idea as she she was only going to ask Yoon Do to take care of her patient. Seo Woo asks if Hye Jung thinks she’s been misled by the wrong ideas all along and Hye Jung points to the fact that Seo Woo said she wanted to make things better (in other words, girl, if it isn’t broke, you wouldn’t be attempting to fix it). Outside Hye Jung’s office, at the nurses station, Yoon Do changes his mind and agrees to take on Ga Jin’s case. It’s there that he discovers that Ga Jin is Hye Jung’s stepmother and that their relationship is a complicated one.
9. Yoo Na extends an olive branch and Seo Woo loses her friend
Hye Jung explains to Yoo Na and Ga Jin the cause of Ga Jin’s facial spasm and the surgery that would have to be carried out to fix it. After explaining the surgery’s success rate, Yoo Na asks when they can get it done. Hye Jung though suggests they go to another hospital and states that she will send Ga Jin’s MRI scan along. Ga Jin though insists on not going anywhere else, claiming that she can use Hye Jung’s employee discount to pay 30% less than what they would pay elsewhere (what the hell?) and that Hye Jung owes them as much anyway seeing that Hye Jung hasn’t done anything to help their family or apologize to her father (bitch, what the hell are you talking about). When Hye Jung scoffs that people truly never change, Ga Jin tosses it right back that Hye Jung hasn’t changed either and she shouldn’t think that just because she now wears a doctor’s coat, her origins are any different from theirs. She then insists that she isn’t going to another hospital and Hye Jung walks out. Yoo Na though catches up to her to give her the business card to the family restaurant they now run (awww. The name’s Grandma’s Diner. The exact same name Mal Soon had named her restaurant) and she tells Hye Jung that they wouldn’t be a burden to her. Meanwhile Yoon Do is trying to reach Hye Jung whose number is switched off, and he leaves a message telling her that he will perform Ga Jin’s surgery. Seo Woo overhears the conversation and warns him to stop worrying about Hye Jung because Ji Hong will do it for Hye Jung anyway. When she invites Yoon Do out for a meal, he turns her down and so she has lunch with the restaurant ahjumma who tries to convince her that she’s all better now and can go for a walk. Except, restaurant ahjumma collapses and no matter how hard Seo Woo tries, Seo Woo isn’t able to revive her and Yoon Do has to come to pull her away from the restaurant ahjumma whilst Kyung Joon reads out the time of death (well would you look at that, I really can feel sorry for Seo Woo after all).
10. Mal Soon’s medical files and a kiss
Hye Jung goes to Grandma’s Diner and watches from across the street as her father: Min Ho tends to his customers. Seeing him takes her to the past when Mal Soon had bought her the necklace she now wears. Hye Jung had wanted something else but Mal Soon had insisted on her wearing the necklace with the small pendant because she likes it. They’d both agreed that the necklace’s pretty and now as Hye Jung stares at the restaurant, she gets tearful (me too! Mal Soon!!!! We miss you). Ji Hong calls her, but she cuts the call after telling him that she’ll call him back, and goes back to watching Min Ho. She flashes to yet another moment when Mal Soon had been teaching her how to apply makeup and Hye Jung had asked her if she should surgically remove her mole. Mal Soon had told her not to, telling her that the placement of the mole will bring her the affection of elders. Hye Jung grumbles because it hasn’t done anything to her relationship with her father and Mal Soon admits that although she knows that Min Ho loves Hye Jung, she can’t interfere in the matter. Hye Jung then sarcastically wonders why Mal Soon is all alone when she’s so wise and Mal Soon tosses right back that Hye Jung ruins their conversations with her smart mouth (haha). She soon apologizes and tells Hye Jung not to feel sad about getting expelled but she should instead concentrate on taking her exams and heading to college. She reminds Hye Jung that Hye Jung once got the highest grades in Maths and soon both of them are laughing and being silly (awww. Mal Soon!!!). It’s those thoughts that has her looking depressed and when Ji Hong spots it, he tells her that he has something that would cheer her up and hands her Mal Soon’s medical files, stating that he too didn’t even have the clearance to get it himself and so he had to ask someone else for help. She thanks him for the files and he tells her that he had a copy made as well, so his friend in general surgery can look over it (hello Pa Ran) because he’s willing to do it if learning the truth is what would make Hye Jung happy (awww). They’re just about to head home when the rain starts and they run to a telephone booth (awww. I’m getting Queen Inhyun’s man feels right there). Whilst there, Hye Jung flashes to 13 years prior when she and Ji Hong had been caught in the rain and had to stay at a bus shelter to wait the rain out. Ji Hong meanwhile tells her that someone once told him about life not being about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain. And with that, he plays LA’s “There She Goes” (awww. Now it has me wanting to watch the Gilmore Girls pilot episode all over again), and proceeds to dance in the rain (hahaha. He’s so adorkable). Hye Jung laughs as she watches him and then he pulls her out of the booth to dance in the rain with him. Soon Hye Jung’s laughing hard at the silliness of it all and Ji Hong stops, smiles, then tells her that he wants to give her something special from a man to a woman. He walks over to her and places a kiss on her lips. And as they kiss, he tells us that life is worth living and he has the chance to savor the little things in life.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Bitch, you are NOT her mother. You were NEVER a mother figure in her life. Her father LEFT her mother for YOU and when her grandmother died you blamed it on HER. So bitch, sit your ass down and stop claiming that you are in any way her mother.
Headache inducing moment:
None in this episode. With the fear of injury from the last episode, I’m quite relieved.
This episode’s a First Kiss Punch. It’s light, sweet and floaty and with the depth we get from Ga Jin showing up and us seeing that Hye Jung still basically just wants to have a family. Also, I loved the note it ended on. Sure the kiss might not be as satisfactory as we were expecting especially because the heat of the fight scene in episode 4 had us all expecting fireworks and passion. But this is her (Hye Jung’s) first kiss and she’s just experiencing sexual attraction for the first time in all her 31 years. I can understand Ji Hong not wanting to rush her and so I can actually think of the kiss as being sweet.
