The coincidences keep adding up and our characters keep acting totally moronic. Dae Chul remains the most inept villain ever, but because Dan Tae’s forgotten his intelligence and connections and Joon Soo’s still on his idealistic train, Dae Chul continues to wreck havoc on everything and my nerves. Thankfully Gong Shim’s still cute but we don’t see her enough.
Top 10 Moments:
- Some truths are hard to swallow
Dan Tae gets an early morning visitor who’s come with a drink in one hand and her credentials in the other. The drink is to bribe Dan Tae into asking her potential interview questions as a company she’d sent her resume to had recently called her in for an interview. When Dan Tae asks to confirm if she’s okay with him asking difficult questions, Gong Shim confirms that it’s fine. It’s not fine however because soon, Gong Shim is attempting to strangle Dan Tae when the latter basically calls her stupid and unlucky (hahahaha). When she finally realizes what she’s doing and stops attempting to strangle Dan Tae, he invites her to meet with him later that night after his meeting with Joon Soo and we hear his thoughts saying that after his talk with Joon Soo, he’ll be sure to tell Gong Shim everything including the fact that he’s not actually Ahn Dan Tae but Joon Soo’s missing cousin: Joon Pyo. Meanwhile, Joon Soo’s looking at the DNA results which read as negative (A-ha. So Dan Tae switched the toothbrush then). With his family impatiently waiting, he finally meets with them and instead of telling them about Dan Tae, informs them that he’s going to be quitting Star Group to start his own company so he can succeed on his own. There’s an uproar as expected but Joon Soo leaves, lost in thought about Dan Tae not being Joon Pyo and unaware that Dan Tae had been suspicious of him and so had changed his toothbrush with Goo Nam’s. Joon Soo eventually leaves his room but overhears a conversation between his mother and his uncle talking about Ahn Soo Yong being in the hospital and how when Joon Pyo had gone missing Joon Soo’s mother had told Dae Chul to let things be as they were. Now both his mother and uncle are wary about Soo Yong coming out of his coma and Joon Soo walks back to his room where he sinks to the floor after hearing what his family’s done.
2. Yet another attempted murder (starting to get tired of this)
Dan Tae’s aunt is watching Ahn Soo Yong when he swallows and then opens his eyes. Immediately, she rushes off to tell the doctor and so doesn’t know that Dae Chul’s hired goon also sees Ahn Soo Yong awake. He places a call to Dae Chul who comes to the hospital and once again sends Dan Tae’s aunt on a wild goose chase so he can see Ahn Soo Yong himself. Unknown to Dae Chul, Joon Soo follows him to the hospital and is able to also see Ahn Soo Yong lying on his hospital bed. He recognizes him and leaves, unaware that Dae Chul’s gives the order to his goon to kill Ahn Soo Yong. He walks out of the hospital and is unaware that Dan Tae who’s been called by his aunt gets a brief glimpse of him. Meanwhile, Dae Chul’s goon yanks out Ahn Soo Yong’s ventilator cord and soon Ahn Soo Yong is gasping for breath. By the time Dan Tae gets to his father’s room, the doctors are working hard to save Ahn Soo Yong’s life. Fortunately, they succeed and the doctor informs Dan Tae that someone had purposefully messed with the ventilator cord and tried to kill Ahn Soo Yong. Immediately, Dan Tae flashes to the glimpse he’d caught of Joon Soo and he gets mad (of course, the drama writer will start to hit us with coincidences that try my patience).
3. Making a bad situation so much worse
Joon Soo waits for Dan Tae at their agreed meeting spot and throws up at the thought of how far his family’s gone down the rabbit hole. He’s back to normal though, when Dan Tae shows up. Dan Tae, already suspicious of Joon Soo asks him why Joon Soo wanted to meet and Joon Soo asks him to stop looking for Joon Pyo (and that ladies and gentleman is how you make a bad situation, worse). Now it’s Dan Tae’s turn to say what he’d come to say and Dan Tae replies that he’d initially thought of meeting Joon Soo and telling him that he wouldn’t look for Joon Pyo anymore, but now, he’ll be sure to find Joon Pyo’s kidnapper (see what you did there Dae Chul? You just burned your chance of actually getting away with it all by attempting to kill Ahn Soo Yong again. Dude doesn’t know when to quit).
4. Dan Tae’s back to being a noble idiot but not for long
After their meeting, Dan Tae heads to the park where he’s supposed to meet Gong Shim. And sure enough, she’s there, wondering where he is and why he hasn’t shown up yet. Dan Tae, back to being a noble idiot, calls Gong Shim when he’s out of sight and cancels on their agreed date. Gong Shim pretends like she was considering doing so as well so she can prepare for her interview. She ends the call and goes home, mopey and unwilling to eat the dinner her mother had prepared for her. Back at home, Dan Tae remembers Gong Shim’s words about her wanting to prepare for her interview. Aware that she’d only said so to absolve him of his guilt, he calls her and asks that they go on a date immediately. Gong Shim’s delighted and soon the both of them are at the cinema, watching a late night movie together. They hold hands whilst watching the movie and eventually fall asleep.
5. Joon Soo makes Gong Mi a job offer
Whilst Gong Shim’s on her way for her interview, practicing her answers to her interview questions even as Dan Tae offers her support, Gong Mi meets with Joon Soo who walks into her office and requests for a meeting outside the office premises. They meet at a Subway shop (seriously though? How much did Subway pay to get all this PPL?) and Gong Mi’s terrified that Joon Soo’s wants to talk to her about his mother having discovered her lies. Turns out Joon Soo’s already talked to his mother, but he doesn’t care (hahaha. Gong Shim’s shocked face is classic). Rather, he wants her to join him at his new office and head his company’s legal team. When Gong Mi looks reluctant, he points out that she doesn’t need to give him an answer immediately as he’s willing to give her time to think about. She promises to do that. Back in her office, she smiles as she remembers Joon Soo saying that she will be a big help to him (girl, I don’t even like seeing your face? Why are you smiling?).
6. Gong Shim’s interview is at Joon Soo’s new company
Gong Shim has her interview and it turns out that most of the questions Dan Tae had practiced with her are not the question she’s asked, and because she’d practiced well enough, she’s able to stay calm and speak passionately. She evens chips in a little Italian that wins her interviewers over. As she leaves, she runs into Joon Soo who’s surprised and delighted to hear that she’s interviewing with the company. Turns out the company is his and although he’s pleased to see Gong Shim’s application form, he refuses to be involved in the hiring process and would rather leave it to the team to decide who gets in and who doesn’t (Good for you Joon Soo. Gong Shim would have been so pissed if you’d gotten involved).
7. Dae Chul continues to be several steps ahead
Joon Soo gets a call from Grandmother and when he goes into see her, she asks him to go in her stead on a trip to see an acquaintance. To make it even more complicated, she asks Dan Tae to go along with Joon Soo on the trip. Cue the most quiet and awkward car ride ever. The silence is broken when Joon Soo realizes they’re not going in the right direction, but Dan Tae explains that he wants to pick something up somewhere first. Somewhere turns out to be the arboretum and Dan Tae requests Joon Soo’s help in carrying the heavy, heavy items he needs to pick from there, meaning he is able to get Joon Soo into the arboretum with him. But the old man: Kim Gil Bong (the one who recognized Joon Soo) has stopped working at the arboretum and when the receptionist gives Dan Tae the man’s number, Dan Tae calls but the number it isn’t going through. Turns out that Kim Gil Bong is at the moment meeting with Dae Chul who offers him a ton of money in exchange for Kim Gil Bong quitting his his job at the arboretum, changing his phone number and also not mentioning that he’s seen Joon Soo’s mother. Of course it’s when Dae Chul gets to the office car park that Dan Tae and Joon Soo decide to have a very public argument where Joon Soo accuses Dan Tae of taking him to the arboretum and Dan Tae states that he knows Joon Soo had been to the arboretum. When Joon Soo goes on and on about Dan Tae quitting whilst he’s ahead, Dan Tae accuses Joon Soo of having been the one to hide Kim Gil Bong and tells Joon Soo that it’s only just made him more curious to discover who it is that Joon Soo’s protecting. The two cousins storm off after Dan Tae tells Joon Soo that Joon Soo still has a chance and Dae Chul laughs at the coincidence that Dan Tae suspects Joon Soo.
8. Dan Tae finds yet another clue
Back at the hospital with his aunt who apologizes that she hadn’t been security conscious about Ahn Soo Yong, Dan Tae asks her to explain everything that’s happened, seeing that the cameras in the hospital were out of order (how convenient, writer). She explains about receiving the call from Ahn Soo Yong’s army friend which was why she’d left the room, and then she adds that the friend didn’t show and hasn’t been picking up his calls ever since. Dan Tae collects the friend’s number and makes the call but Dae Chul doesn’t recognize the number and so doesn’t pick up. Working on his suspicions, he calls the company’s HR department to find out Dan Tae’s phone number and confirms it as the one that’s calling him.
9. Dan Tae and Gong Shim are on a roll and Gong Shim gets the job
Back from work that evening, Gong Shim takes Dan Tae out to dinner like she’d promised after she’d bought his dream. She explains that she thinks she did well in her interview but complains that Dan Tae’s practice questions didn’t help at all (hehehe), although they did help her not to feel nervous. Soon they’re holding hands and digging into their food, or rather Dan Tae’s holding Gong Shim hand and she’s using her other hand to shove her food in her mouth, not even stopping when Dan Tae asks her to (hahaha). After dinner, they take a stroll at the night marketplace and Gong Shim and Dan Tae come across a stick-on tattoo shop where someone is unveiling a butterfly tattoo. Back at the house Dan Tae puts two and two together and figures that the butterfly his mother was talking about was probably a butterfly tattoo on the kidnapper. The next morning, Gong Shim gets the news that she’s been offered the job and she’s delighted, sharing the news with her parents who are thrilled that first Gong Mi’s going to be working with Joon Soo and now Gong Shim’s got a job (hahaha. This will be so good. Seeing Gong Mi’s face when she realizes that she will be working with her sister at Joon Soo’s company will be hilarious). Gong Shim immediately heads to her room and shares the good news with a delighted Dan Tae.
10. Dae Chul frames his nephew
Upon getting to the office, Gong Shim’s surprised to see that Joon Soo is the CEO of the company. She at first logically assumes that Joon Soo had been instrumental in getting her hired, but he immediately denies having had anything to do with her getting the job and the head of the HR team confirms it, telling her that his department thoroughly went over her application before deciding to offer her the job. Gong Shim’s delighted as his Joon Soo and she informs him that Dan Tae’s on his way and suggests they grab lunch together, like old times. Meanwhile, Dan Tae’s aunt calls him and tells him that she’d gotten a phone call from yet another strange number and the person hadn’t said anything. When she asks if Ahn Soo Yong’s army friend has finally deigned to pick up Dan Tae’s calls, Dan Tae calls the number again. But the phone rings out from Joon Soo’s bag and Joon Soo brings it out, not knowing where it came from whilst Dan Tae turns to see that Joon Soo has the ringing phone. He cuts the call and the two men stare at each other.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because for a man who started the show as being extremely smart and having enough connections to be able to find everything he wants, he is at the moment being very very stupid. Dude! Trace the number and find out who it’s registered to. And whilst you’re at it, talk to your cop friend to look at traffic cams around the arboretum on the day your dad was attacked. You might be able to find a clue. Stop relying on badges and ringing phones. Sheesh!
Headache inducing moment:
Because Dan Tae, the idiotic lawyer did two things wrong. First, he called with his own number, a number that is registered with Star Group. Meaning if his first haunch had been correct about the person responsible being a director of Star Group then the person can easily find out that his number is the one calling and put two and two together. Also, how can a man who’s able to trace his father’s flight pattern not just trace the number to see who it’s registered to. Why call and give Dae Chul even more of a heads-up? Argh!
This episode’s a Gin and tonic. It’s as basic as we can get and right now, I’m so tired with the unnecessary run around and the way the writer thinks she can play with my intelligence. There are four more episodes to go and I hope they turn out more interesting than this one, not like I’ll be holding my breath.
