Top 10 Moments:
- Poong Yeon might actually be redeeming himself?
Seo Ri gets kidnapped by masked Poong Yeon and Jun notices. He gives chase but loses the kidnapper and Seo Ri when the kidnapper races off on a horse. Poong Yeon though tosses a knifed message on a wall and Jun runs to it to unfold it. What he sees shocks him. Next thing we see is Poong Yeon carrying Seo Ri with a talisman slapped on her back. He notices he’s being tailed by Hong Joo’s henchgirls and tells them that now they’ve confirmed that he’s got Seo Ri, they can go deliver the message to Hong Joo. The girls leave and immediately he confirms that, Poong Yeon takes a diversion to a barn where he drops Seo Ri, who notices his face as he pulls away his mask. She’s bound and gagged and can only cry when he leaves, whilst Poong Yeon is outside the talisman surrounded barn as he flashes back to the festival of candles and how he’d wished that Yeon Hee experience only the good things in life and that the path she take be fragrant. As he remembers his wish he looks sad outside the barn, and Hong Joo joins him to ask him to set the Seo Ri on fire, telling him that him hesitating is the same thing Hyun Seo did and now Yeon Hee has turned into Seo Ri, a cursed being. She tells him not to hold back as he’s the only one that can save Yeon Hee from her pain and when Poong Yeon confirms if he’d truly know the truth after burning Seo Ri, Hong Joo tells him yes (seriously dude! What if she’s lying? Seo Ri would be dead, dead. Burnt to a crisp. Did you consider that?), and that when he does it, his sorely missed Yeon Hee will return. At the words, Poong Yeon lights up the talisman and the barn and Hong Joo, away from the flame smiles. The entire barn ignites, but Hong Joo’s smile falls when she notices that she still has thorns on her skin. She tries to step closer to the barn, but the holy fire reacts to her black magic and her hands turn pitch black. Poong Yeon notices this, whilst Hong Joo turns to glare at him. Meanwhile Yeon Hee is safe in another barn (whew!), which is where Jun finds her (so Poong Yeon had sent him the actual location. You just might be redeemed Poong Yeon).
2. Poong Yeon just keeps redeeming himself
We cut back to Hong Joo who’s carefully examining the barn, wondering why there’s no body inside. She rounds on Poong Yeon wondering what happened, especially because Poong Yeon had told her Seo Ri was inside. Poong Yeon, looking all unbothered reminds her that her henchgirls had seen him bring her there. When Hong Joo wonders where Seo Ri up and disappeared to, Poong Yeon replies that he doesn’t know. It’s the same reply he gives Hong Joo who wonders why Seo Ri isn’t in the barn to be burned by Poong Yeon’s holy flames. He does ask her why she’s so worked up though and Hong Joo just tells him to hurry and find Seo Ri before she learns that her older brother almost burned her to death. With that said, Hong Joo stomps off and Poong Yeon remembers when evil Hyun Seo had told him to follow Hong Joo’s orders. After evil Hyun Seo had said those words, he’d flashed back to when he’d spoken to normal Hyun Seo and had asked him what he should do if Hyun Seo’s ever a threat to Yeon Hee. Normal Hyun Seo had told him then to never trust him and it would seem that it’s those words that had guided Poong Yeon. Poong Yeon leaves the burnt barn and heads to where Jun is showing Seo Ri the map Poong Yeon had drawn for him to come save Seo Ri. Asking if Seo Ri is alright, Poong Yeon tells her that he’d tried to find out what Hong Joo’s motives were and informs her that Hong Joo had yet another trick up her sleeve in killing Seo Ri: his holy fire. When Jun wonders if Poong Yeon will kill Seo Ri then, Poong Yeon sets him straight, telling him that no one would kill Seo Ri since he’s the only one with the holy fire. Seo Ri puts two and two together and figures that’s why Hong Joo had approached Poong Yeon and she mentions the fact that Hyun Seo had come to visit her in her cell, with Hong Joo in tow. Poong Yeon’s stunned by the news and Jun is focused on finding and then killing Hong Joo, convinced that that’s the only way to keep her from going after Seo Ri again. Thankfully, Poong Yeon knows just where to find her.
3. Hong Joo moves to Plan B and Ok is still stupid, even in prison (hahaha)
And indeed she’s back in her hideout where Hyun Seo is fighting to take control of his mind back. Hong Joo though is delusional and screaming that if Hyun Seo hadn’t made the talisman and lost his powers, they would have been able to kill Seo Ri by now (yeah, because non evil Hyun Seo will have ever wanted to kill Seo Ri. Keep dreaming Hong Joo). She looks pitying and sad at Hyun Seo, telling him that she didn’t want to make him become like he is. Of course, her sadness and pity do not stop her from bringing her black magic into the mix and turning Hyun Seo into a puppet once again. She tells him that he must break the talisman he’d risked his life to make for Seo Ri, that way her hair can turn white again, people will fear her and Jun would fall ill. Meanwhile, Ok is in prison, calling out to the guards that he has something important to tell the king. He wails about him and the king being on the same side and when that gets him no response, he tries to bribe the guards by telling them that his mother could just as easily fill up their pockets. The guards walk away laughing and tell him to eat his food. He at first grumbles and insists that he won’t eat it, but when they’re out of sight, he digs in, all the while crying for his mother.
4. Soon Deuk and Yo Gwang keep up with their flirting and Jun wants to strip Hong Joo of her black magic
Yo Gwang’s lost in thoughts when Soon Deuk tries getting his attention. She finally startles him and then uses the opportunity to ask about Jun, explaining her worry that someone seems to be after him (ha, right. She hasn’t seen him since Hong Joo’s henchgirls were following him around). Yo Gwang replies that Jun is alright and then goes into this long mopey conversation about how things are going wrong and he can’t protect those he’s meant to be protecting. Soon Deuk however, has no interest in his words and makes to walk away. Yo Gwang pulls her back insisting that she was the one that started this whole conversation and then he launches into all his fears. When he notices how close they are, he tells her to leave, but Soon Deuk’s not having it as she wonders about him feeling so free to share his innermost thoughts with her. She asks him if he likes her and Yo Gwang exclaims a loud no. Soon Deuk though isn’t paying attention to his words and tells him not to like her with all that he has going on. She walks away, leaving Yo Gwang to yell after her that he only likes tall women (hahahaha). He later heads to the temple on the mountain where he meets Jun who tells him about Hong Joo’s recent attempts to kill Seo Ri. Jun is of the opinion that should Hong Joo be left alone, she will continue to scheme of a way to kill Seo Ri and asks Yo Gwang if there’s a way to take Hong Joo’s black magic power away from her. Yo Gwang doesn’t know of a way but Jun insists that he will find one.
5. Evil Hyun Seo tries to remove the talisman
Poong Yeon pays a visit to Hong Joo’s lair and finds himself drawn to her box with the black magic sword. When he tries to touch the box, his hands immediately blacken with black magic and he pulls back at the same time Hong Joo shows up to ask him what he’s doing there. Poong Yeon gets to the heart of it, asking what Hong Joo’s next step is. Hong Joo tells him that Hyun Seo will help them out and smiles as she tells a stunned Poong Yeon that Hyun Seo is now on their side. Poong Yeon asks what she’s done to Hyun Seo and Hong Joo explains her bringing him back from the dead. When he asks where Hyun Seo is at the moment, Hong Joo tells him that he’s meeting with Seo Ri. The words have Poong Yeon racing out of the room whilst Hong Joo smiles. Soon, Poong Yeon is racing to make it in time whilst Yo Gwang and Jun are also on their way. Seo Ri, meanwhile is meeting with Hyun Seo at the Taoist temple and trying to ascertain that he’d come with Hong Joo to her cell and had tried to kill her. When she tells Hyun Seo that she knows he will never kill her and so Hyun Seo should return to them, his eyes flash and he starts to approach whilst Seo Ri steps back. She however can’t go far and soon Hyun Seo has her pinned. She’s able to use her shockwaves to send him flying backwards but Hyun Seo comes right back and this time around her powers don’t work. He smirks, stretches out his hands and starts to remove the talisman. Seo Ri’s hair starts to turn white and Jun who with Yo Gwang, had managed to get to the temple, collapses from the curse taking effect. Poong Yeon who arrives in time to see that races to the main hall where he’s able to see Hyun Seo, complete with the flashing possession eyes. When Hyun Seo won’t stop what he’s doing however, Poong Yeon attacks him and pulls him away from Seo Ri. Poong Yeon’s not strong enough to hold his father however and Hyun Seo sends him flying. Hyun Seo also sends Jun flying when the latter comes running in and tries to hold him back. And then he advances on Seo Ri who’s at the moment being protected by Yo Gwang who can only call Hyun Seo’s name in the hopes of him returning to himself. It doesn’t work and Hyun Seo comes dangerously close until Poong Yeon uses the holy flames to send his father flying (Seriously Poong Yeon. You’re the man of the hour in this episode). It knocks evil Hyun Seo unconscious and Hong Joo’s palm splits as her control over Hyun Seo’s breaks.
6. Jun and Hong Joo have a talk and he learns of the source of her black magic
Frustrated with it all, Jun considers heading to Hong Joo’s place to find a way to remove Hong Joo’s black magic and break Hyun Seo out of Hong Joo’s hold. Poong Yeon volunteers going instead seeing that Hong Joo still thinks that he’s on her side. Even as Seo Ri is trying to deal with the fact that Hyun Seo will die should they take away Hong Joo’s black magic from her (please tell me you’re not considering letting her keep her black magic to spare Hyun Seo’s life ,Seo Ri), Hyun Seo rouses. Except, it’s evil Hyun Seo acting as Hong Joo’s mouthpiece and wondering why Seo Ri is so tenacious. When Yo Gwang asks what they can do to break him out of the spell, evil Hyun Seo smiles as he tells both Jun and Yo Gwang that they too will die for staying by Seo Ri’s side. The words make Seo Ri realize that it’s Hong Joo speaking and Jun stoops in front of evil Hyun Seo to address Hong Joo, saying that he doesn’t even want to see her or talk to her because she’s so inhumane. Hong Joo replies that it’s Jun that made the Red Gentleman’s Robe turn against her (um, sweetie, that’s all you and your wanting to kill her business), and then asks how Jun had known how to cure Sunjo’s sickness. Jun smiles as he tells her that he heard that black magic seeps into a person from the weakest point in a person’s heart and states that he tried getting an idea of what was going on in Sunjo’s heart. He adds that he’s also curious as to which of Hyun Seo’s weaknesses Hong Joo had used to get black magic into Hyun Seo. Hong Joo smiles at the fact that they’re thinking of getting rid of the black magic in Hyun Seo. She tells them that they can’t pull it off and wonders if they can handle Hyun Seo considering that they can’t kill him or save him. She smiles as she says that all they can do is watch Hyun Seo slowly die. Jun smiles right back as he replies that with all of Hong Joo’s efforts, she must also badly want to keep Hyun Seo alive. At that exact point, Poong Yeon who’s been trying to creep up on Hong Joo tries to set her ablaze with his holy fire. But she responds quickly and races to her box to bring out the black magic blade. Wielding it, she tries to cut Poong Yeon but Poong Yeon grabs the hand holding the blade and it begins to burn. Using her strength, Hong Joo swipes at Poong Yeon with the blade and he releases her hand then faints, whilst Hong Joo tries to put out the flames. The distraction is enough to give Hyun Seo back control of his mind and Jun uses the moment to ask Hyun Seo if there’s a way they can take away Hong Joo’s black magic. Hyun Seo replies that they must find Hong Joo’s black magic blade as it was the first thing she grabbed when she started practicing black magic.
7. Hong Joo makes Seo Ri an offer and hears the truth from Queen Shim’s mouth
Just as Hyun Seo is telling them that they must burn the blade with holy fire, Hong Joo takes control of Hyun Seo’s body again to inform them that she’s found their rat (Poong Yeon), and to tell Seo Ri not to worry as Poong Yeon’s still alive. She then makes Seo Ri an offer to come to Seoyang Forest if she wants to see Poong Yeon. It’s at this point that Queen Shim walks in to witness the fact that they’ve lost Hyun Seo as an ally. When Seo Ri tells her that they’ve discovered the source of Hong Joo’s black magic and so they intend to take it away from her and free Hyun Seo, Queen Shim expresses her worry as to why Seo Ri must always plunge into danger (woman, she’s been Seo Ri for way longer than she’s been a princess. You don’t like that? Well, that’s too bad). She tells Seo Ri that she will assign soldiers to Jun so Jun can do the work, but Seo Ri insists on handling her own affairs by herself and points out the fact that Jun is helping her even though he’s not mandated to and she wishes to protect him. Queen Shim though harps about the fact that Seo Ri is a princess and so Jun, a man of low rank shouldn’t be wandering in and out of her room the way he’s been doing. Jun hears the words and leaves without Seo Ri having seen him. After leaving the temple, Queen Shim heads over to Sunjo to inform him that Hyun Seo cannot remain as the head of the temple. When Sunjo learns that Hong Joo is once again behind this new development, he’s frustrated as to how Hong Joo can cause so much mayhem. Queen Shim then suggests that they make Poong Yeon the new head of the Imperial Taoist Branch. When Sunjo gets huffy about her and Poong Yeon being close (hahaha. Old habits die hard, ehn Sunjo?), Queen Shim reminds him of Poong Yeon’s loyalty which was the reason why Sunjo had kept him close all these years. Sunjo merely tells her that he will think about it and get back to her.
8. The team splits up
Seo Ri makes to leave the temple but Jun who’s guessed that she’s headed over to see Hong Joo tells her not to go. Seo Ri’s suggestion though is that she meet Hong Joo and stall her long enough for Jun to find the black magic blade. Jun isn’t willing to let her go though, speaking of his worries about the both of them sharing the same horrible fate and him being worried that something would happen to her. Seo Ri holds onto his hands as she tells him that Hong Joo won’t kill them, and she trusts him, which is why she wants him to go after the black magic blade. She leaves and Yo Gwang follows her. Meanwhile, Hong Joo is telling the unconscious form of Poong Yeon that thanks to him, she will be able to capture Seo Ri. She tells him to wake up soon as she intends to put his holy fire to use. With those words, she smiles and leaves. We cut back to Jun who’s about to leave the temple when normal Hyun Seo speaks and warns him to be careful when handling the blade because the black magic will try to consume him. He tells Jun that seeing that black magic tries to creep in through a person’s weakness, then Jun must strengthen his resolve.
9. Jun gives in to the black magic?
Hong Joo gets a message from her henchgirls and heads out to the forest where she meets Seo Ri and Yo Gwang Meanwhile, Jun’s at her lair where he notices a still unconscious Poong Yeon who doesn’t respond to his calls. He then walks around, taking note of the room and sees the box with the black magic blade. When he makes to touch it, the box opens on its own and soon he’s hearing whispers about how he’ll never escape the status he was born with and in the end, he’ll end up with nothing because people look down on him and even the girl he loves will leave him as well. Jun nevertheless pushes through and grabs the blade and soon he’s shaking with the force of it as he remembers Hyun Seo warning him about being careful so he doesn’t succumb to the blade’s black magic. His eyes flash and then he’s shaking hard, and remembering Hyun Seo telling him that the black magic will seek to exploit and take control of him using his weakness. As he hears Hyun Seo’s words telling him not to falter, he remembers Poong Yeon telling him that he can’t do anything, on the night that Seo Ri had been arrested. He falls to the floor and then he’s hearing Ok’s mother’s voice telling him that he shouldn’t try to find a way out or overcome it because he can’t do anything and so he should just live as if he’s dead. He hears and remembers his mother telling him to apologize to Jun and then flashes to Queen Shim telling Seo Ri that one can’t change something determined by birth and so she should distance herself from Jun. Next, he remembers Ok accusing him of being the one to push his mother into the fire because those who ran away don’t have the right to want to live. Jun continues to shake and moan in pain and suddenly he stops, his hand steady as he holds onto the sword and then his eyes flash like evil Hyun Seo. Meanwhile, evil Hyun Seo is able to break out of his bindings and he storms out of the temple (I wonder where he’s headed).
10. The most fantastic teamwork ever
Hong Joo meets with Seo Ri and Yo Gwang, and Yo Gwang’s hands tighten on his sword. Warning that Poong Yeon would die should she be attacked, she wonders if Seo Ri had a great time with Hyun Seo and smiles when Seo Ri replies that Hong Joo’s black magic is a fearsome thing for it actually saved Hyun Seo who was already dead. Hong Joo smiles as she says that it can also kill as well, and spews her poison and lies about Hyun Seo’s death being on Seo Ri. When Seo Ri asks if Hyun Seo can be saved, Hong Joo states that he can if Seo Ri is willing to give her life in exchange for his, kind of like what Hyun Seo had done. Seo Ri replies that that’s why she came to the meeting point, to give her life, but Hong Joo doesn’t believe her as she realizes that Jun is not with them. She runs off and when her henchgirls try to prevent Seo Ri and Yo Gwang from chasing after her, Seo Ri sends out her energy waves, knocking them unconscious. Soon they’re chasing after Hong Joo who gets to her lair and smiles when she sees Jun holding onto the black magic sword. She calls him foolish for willingly touching the blade and Seo Ri and Yo Gwang look devastated. Jun rises to his feet and slowly glances at Seo Ri and Yo Gwang then steps forward with the blade towards a smiling Hong Joo. He smirks and Hong Joo’s smile falls as Jun asks her if she thinks he’s her. He motions and Poong Yeon steps out from behind the curtains and sets the holy fire blazing in a pan. Giving another smirk, even as Hong Joo begins to look horrified, Jun tosses the black magic blade into the fire. The burning sword reacts with Hong Joo who screams and writhes in pain, till she spits out blood and the black magic floats out of her in wisps of smoke and joins the burning blade whilst Hong Joo glares at Jun (so satisfying :D. Now all that’s left is the tearing her apart that will be sure to happen at the end of the drama. I can wait that long :D).
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because she just confirmed Hong Joo’s words. So, Jun is good enough to sacrifice himself and save Seo Ri, but he’s not good enough to be with her? What a bitch!
Headache inducing moment:
None. Strange but I kind of figured that Jun won’t fall for all those lies from the blade. So I wasn’t anxious at all.
This episode’s a glass of French 75. Leaving us feeling warm and bubbly and victorious that Poong Yeon is back to being one of the good guys and his mind and brain is back to working. It’s delicious with the victory of Hong Joo losing her black magic powers and that blood and how worn out she looks at the end is just the start of how she’ll look like when she sees her end. And maybe it makes me cruel, but I’m all bubbly with happiness at the thought. Hong Joo, you are going to die very horribly.
