Ma Jin Seok’s take down is so immensely satisfying to our Con Squad and to us as well. Sung Hee continues to learn that the truly rich operate under different rules and picks herself up a powerful enemy as well. Jung Do learns about Sung Il’s soon to be dismissal and the truth behind Min Shik and convinces the rest of the Con Squad to save our awesome Sung Il with so much back taxes paid, he will not be let go.
Top 10 Moments:
- Running full steam ahead with the plan
After Jung Do tells him that he’ll continue with the con, Jae Sung drops a pair of handcuffs on the kitchen island and tells Jung Do that Jung Do should just cuff himself the minute he sees Jae Sung the next day as Jae Sung’s too old for all the mess. And with those words, he walks away. Jung Do’s frustrated and angry but doesn’t stay that way for long as he calls Ma Jin Seok to inform him that Hak Joo won’t be able to make it to the meeting and so he would like for Ma Jin Seok to meet with him immediately. In the cells, Sung Il tries to get the attention of one of the policemen around but Mi Joo tells him not to bother as they’re merely the bait being used to trap Jung Do. And over at Bang Sil’s office, whilst she remembers Mr. Kim’s words about Jung Do having saved Chairman Wang, Ji Yeon steps into the office to inform Bang Sil about the team being arrested. Bang Sil asks where Jung Do’s at. Jung Do is at the moment being tailed by Jae Sung’s army of policemen all wearing civilian clothing, but still looking like cops. Jae Sung gives the instructions that Jung Do be immediately cuffed once the ink on the contract dries, but the minute Jung Do notices the crowd he’s picked up, he takes off running and everyone chases after him. Soon, he’s cornered on all sides by Jae Sung’s men and their cars and just when all hope seems lost, Bang Sil’s black sedan pulls up and Jung Do spots her with a relieved smile. He races into the car and they drive off with an exhausted but relieved Jung Do giving Bang Sil a thumbs up (hahahaha). The sedan then races off and by the time they get to a stop, another black sedan, exactly like Bang Sil’s joins them, meaning by the time the cops catch up with them, there are two identical cars on the road and they don’t know which one is which. Jae Sung screams at them to follow both cars, except when the cops split and each of them follows one black sedan, more identical black sedans join the others, and all of them with the same license plates too (hahaha. This is just awesome. And Jae Sung looking like he’s about to pop a vein is the best part of it all). Jae Sung screams at his cops to catch any of the cars and then the three cars split yet again. His men finally pull up and when he meets them, he loses it, screaming at their incompetence. When he suggests they start tailing Ma Jin Seok because Jung Do will be sure to go meet the man, his men tell him that they’re more worried about being suspended if it’s discovered that they chased after Jung Do, when he hadn’t even committed a crime, and had done it outside their jurisdiction too. Turns out they were right to worry because another set of policemen show up to handcuff Jae Sung (hahahaha. That is so satisfying).
2. And the con is a success. Oh, sweet victory.
Jung Do on the other hand is safe at a carwash with Bang Sil and Ji Yeon where Bang Sil tells him that the great thing about being wealthy is that she can afford to buy a lot of cars that are identical to hers (hahaha). When Jung Do asks her how she’d known, she replies that she’d received a call from someone who had not only told her about the others’ arrests but had also mentioned that Jung Do was being chased. She has no idea who it is that called and neither does Jung Do (I think it was most likely Deok Bae. He probably found out and knew he couldn’t help Sung Il directly. So he did it the only way he knew how. Reached out to the richest member of the group who Sung Il had probably told him all about, and then called the higher ups in the police department so Jae Sung can be arrested). Next thing we see, Ji Yeon is at the police station, bursting the other members of the team out of prison while Jung Do is meeting Ma Jin Seok who eagerly affixes his seal to the documents and calls his person at the bank to make the six million dollars transfer. Whilst they wait for his person to get back to him, Ma Jin Seok suggest that they cut Sung Il out of the deal while he just gives Jung Do three percent of the money (while you sneaky dishonorable lying thief!), instead of Jung Do getting just 2.5% of the money if Sung Il remains a part of the deal. Jung Do laughs as he tells Ma Jin Seok that he remains scum to the very last moment. Sung Il then joins them and when Ma Jin Seok tries to lie his way out of the words he’d said, Sung Il calls him a moron and tells him that he’s been conned (Booyah! Hahahaha). When Ma Jin Seok doesn’t believe them, Sung Il tells him to use any laptop in the cafe to confirm the true price of the worthless piece of land they’d sold him. Immediately Ma Jin Seok does, he calls his banker friend to stop the transfer but the money’s already gone. Sung Il laughs at the look on his face and tells Ma Jin Seok that now Ma Jin Seok knows how his old housekeeper who he’d forced to drink water at the beginning of the drama had felt. As Ma Jin Seok looks like his world’s ended, Sung Il tells him that he should never use his money to toy with people. Ma Jin Seok goes on his knees to beg and plead (hahaha. This is just too good). He then gets angry and calls Sung Il a jerk, at which point all our Con Squad members gather and Ma Jin Seok realizes that he’s really been played. When he makes to call the cops, Sung Il informs him that all his money has been paid as the taxes he was owing and advises him to live a decent life from that moment. He hands over the key to the car Ma Jin Seok had given him and walks away, and our Con Squad head out with him (badass. Badass), leaving Ma Jin Seok to scream, cry and laugh.
3. The rot is even more far gone that we would have suspected.
City Hall receives a call and when they check, they see that Ma Jin Seok has paid his taxes. The other Sung Il runs straight to Commissioner Ahn’s office where the commissioner is in a meeting with Gab Soo, our ‘honorable’ lawmaker, and informs them both that Ma Jin Seok has paid his taxes in its entirety. Gab Soo laughs and wonders why Commissioner Ahn is not thrilled at the news. Commissioner Ahn however informs him that Ma Jin Seok is a collaborator with Bang Pil Gyu which is why he’d been shielding him and had put him as Sung Il’s team target, having had no idea that Sung Il will actually be able to pull it off. He reminds Gab Soo that should Ma Jin Seok, Bang Pil Gyu and Choi Chul Woo fall, then it would affect him and Gab Soo as well. He then asks if Gab Soo thinks that the team would be able to get to Bang Pil Gyu as well, and Gab Soo can’t give an answer.
4. Setting the plan in motion
The two bosses are unaware that at that very moment, Sung Hee is briefing No Seung’s team about Bang Pil Gyu, the next person on their list. She points him out as the owner of the subsidiary company that had carried out a pyramid scheme and also a good friend and trainee of Choi Sul Woo. She tells them that Bang Pil Gyu at the moment owes nearly 50 million dollars in taxes (still a whole lot of money). A team member wonders why they’re going after Bang Pil Gyu considering that they know that he won’t pay all that money and Sung Hee admits to doing it to save Sung Il. She continues, explaining that they will confront Bang Pil Gyu with TV cameras rolling so they can get public sentiment on their side and goes into detail about the kind of person Bang Pil Gyu is. The man, after the whole fracas with the pyramid scheme that had resulted in thousands of people losing their jobs had merely transferred his assets to his children whilst he continued living in his big mansion and living comfortably, all without paying millions in taxes. Sung Hee’s plan is for the media to catch wind of it so the Tax Revenue Service will have no choice but to step into the situation, thus putting pressure on Bang Pil Gyu and ultimately Ma Jin Seok which would result in Sung Il being free. She figures that Ma Jin Seok won’t pay his taxes (no one’s told her the good news then) and this is the only way they can save Sung Il. With No Seung stating that he’d been able to reach out to a number of news stations who should be waiting for them, the team heads out to visit Bang Pil Gyu.
5. We meet Bang Pil Gyu; actor extraordinaire
On their way to Bang Pil Gyu’s house, Sung Hee runs through Bang Pil Gyu’s house-plan, with the rest of the team, pointing out the various rooms and what they would most likely find there. She also adds that the dressing room should have a lot of valuables like designer bags, etc, and so the team should cause a fuss there so they can get it all on camera and win public sentiments. As she speaks, they all imagine it happening and even go as far as imagining the jewels they would recover, being placed on the table while cameras go to work and capture everything. Sung Hee then mentions the most important room of them all: the fifth room, which is Bang Pil Gyu’s room. She tells the team that she’ll bet that the safe is in the room and that the result of their raid rests on what they can find inside it. When the team gets to the house, the reporters are already outside the gate and Sung Hee rings the doorbell. When no one enters, she has one of the team members bring a ladder and the man scales the wall, then opens the gate for the others to enter. Unknown to them, a man watches their entry with a smile. Sung Hee heads to the front door and knocks but no one answers. The team gets the ladder again and the man who climbs it, ascertains that they’re people inside. Immediately, the team gets the needed tools, break the door and enter the house, splitting in their previously agreed formation. Except, No Seung runs into Bang Pil Gyu first and there’s a brief flash to when he’d first met the man (why do I feel like the person we can’t see, whose name Bang Pil Gyu asks for, is Sung Il’s friend: Min Shik?). He calls Sung Hee’s attention to Bang Pil Gyu who’s all smiles as he says that he’s been waiting for them. He’s all cordial and when Sung Hee starts to mention the reason why they’re there, he tells her that he knows they’re there to collect his taxes and he’s been waiting so he can tell the press the reason why he’s not been able to pay his taxes. And with that, he launches into the impromptu press conference stating that he was called a fraud and lost his company and now, he’s penniless and that’s why he hasn’t been able to pay his taxes. He explains that his company suffered a witch hunt because they’d refused to pay bribes and expresses his regret at the numerous people who worked for him and who are now without jobs. As Sung Hee and No Seung and the rest of the team watch their work turn into a stage for Bang Pil Gyu to make a political statement, Bang Pil Gyu bows in apology and the myriads of cameras capture the moment (Damn he’s good). With his apology thus tendered, he gives the team the go ahead needed to carry out their search.
6. Sung Hee gets herself a very powerful enemy
The team searches the rooms thoroughly and find nothing of value or note. When they do find some expensive watches, Bang Pil Gyu’s wife pleads with them, explaining that it’s a gift from her daughter-in-law and Bang Pil Gyu joins her to paint an even more pitiful picture of how they’re living for the press who gobble it all up and snap away. Realizing that they could lose in their entirety, Sung Hee decides to shake things up and has Bang Pil Gyu open the fifth room. Sure enough, there’s a safe inside and when Sung Hee asks him to open it, Bang Pil Gyu explains that it’s only a personal item in there and wonders if Sung Hee really must insists on continuing with what she’s doing. Sung Hee insists, and Bang Pil types in his code and uses the safe key. Before he opens the safe though, he asks Sung Hee what her name is and Sung Hee tells him not only her name but the team she works at. Bang Pil Gyu tells her that he’ll remember her name and No Seung looks worried. Bang Pil Gyu then opens the safe and the only thing inside is a picture of his father, thus giving Bang Pil Gyu yet another opportunity to milk public sentiments by going on and on about how he misses his father. As the team leaves, Bang Pil Gyu calls Sung Hee to ask her if she just came to his house to put on a show or to get taxes from him, warning her that she would be in a lot of trouble if she answers that she came to get the taxes. Sung Hee though isn’t concerned and tells him that she came to work. The words have Bang Pil Gyu’s face hardening, but then he smiles and sends her on her way. As she leaves, Bang Pil Gyu gets a call from his son about Ma Jin Seok.
7. Jung Do learns about Sung Il possibly losing his job
When Sung Hee gets to the office, she’s surprised to learn that Ma Jin Seok’s paid his taxes. Whilst No Seung wonders why the man would have out of the blue paid his taxes, Sung Hee leaves the office but runs into Jung Do who was coming in to see Sung Il. She’s pissed as she tells Jung Do that he’d ruined her plans of negotiating for Ma Jin Seok to drop the assault and bribery charge he’d brought against Ma Jin Seok, in exchange for him not needing to pay his taxes (doubt if Sung Il would have been okay with your plan either Sung Hee). She congratulates Jung Do for getting out of going to jail, as per his agreement with Sung Il, but tells him that now, Sung Il’s job can’t be saved. With those words, she walks away.
8. Jung Do meets Sung Il’s family and Sung Il tells him his story
Sung Il though is back at home, putting together a memorial dinner for Min Shik (awwww), who he keeps offering cans of coffee (hahaha). Turns out Min Shik’s his wife’s big brother and she teases him as she tells him that she owes Min Shik responsible for the fact that she married Sung Il. In the background of their conversation however is a news report about Jae Sung who’s being accused of aiding and abetting and receiving bribes from fraudsters (hahahaha). The memorial dinner is then interrupted by Jung Do who the family immediately invites to join them in the meal (awwww) and they immediately take to him, so much so that Sung Il’s wife is soon asking to arrange a blind date for him (hahahaha). Sung Il snaps at her to let Jung Do just eat his food and Jung Do, wishing to make the table conversation less awkward calls Sung Il’s daughter: Ji Eun pretty and popular. She calls him a con artist (hahaha) and tells him not to bother complimenting her because she’s his boss’s daughter. Jung Do smiles at the words and the next thing we see, he’s having drinks with Sung Il away from his house. When he asks Sung Il about the person whose memorial it was, Sung Il tells him about Min Shik who had killed himself after he’d been abandoned by everyone when he’d been accused of taking bribes. When Jung Do asks if Min Shik really took bribes or if he’d gone after someone he shouldn’t have, Sung Il tells him that Min Shik had gone after Choi Chul Woo for his taxes but Choi Chul Woo had been such a formidable opponent that they’d not even gotten anywhere near him. Rather, they’d been cut down by his right hand man, Bang Pil Gyu (and I notice how Jung Do happens to know all those names Sung Il’s calling) who’d made a phone call and then all of them (the tax workers) had started pulling away from backing Min Shik when the pressure got too much.Sung Il is particularly depressed as he tells Jung Do the last words he’d spoken to Min Shik who was contemplating suicide was that they should lay low because Sung Il wanted his pension. Jung Do’s curious about who it was that Bang Pil Gyu had called, but Sung Il won’t tell him who it is (something tells me he made the call to Gab Soo). Instead, Sung Il asks why he came over and Jung Do asks why Sung Il didn’t tell him about possibly losing his job. He also asks why Sung Il hadn’t tried cutting a deal with Ma Jin Seok so Ma Jin Seok could get out of not paying his taxes and Sung Il could keep his job. Sung Il replies that it hadn’t felt right, plus, he’d made a promise to Jung Do. Jung Do smiles at the words and then promises to give Sung Il a present later.
9. Ma Jin Seok’s a baby compared to the big boys
Ma Jin Seok meets with Bang Pil Gyu and Bang Pil Gyu’s son: Ho Seok and tells them about him being conned and the swindlers having paid in conned money as his taxes. They don’t believe him of course (just you wait when it happens to you. I hope Ma Jin Seok’s there to laugh his head off at you when it happens) and Ho Seok tells him to hit himself. When he’s not satisfied with how hard Ma Jin Seok’s slapping himself, Ho Seok steps forward and begins to repeatedly punch Ma Jin Seok in the face. When he adds kicks into the equation, Ma Jin Seok grabs hold of Ho Seok’s foot and Bang Pil Gyu finally intervenes and tells his son to stop. He walks to Ma Jin Seok to tell him their partnership is at an end and Ma Jin Seok should go back to where he belongs (ouch). Ma Jin Seok tries to beg and plead but Bang Pil Gyu tells him that Ma Jin Seok had most likely thought he’d swarm into a golden pond and would never have to worry about money again. However, all the ponds in Korea have dried up and there are no more golden ponds. He continues that Ma Jin Seok should be grateful that he’d come near a golden pond and tells him to go back to the filthy pond where he belongs (double ouch). He then gives the order to Ho Seok to clean things up and Ma Jin Seok’s business as well. Alone in the car, after Ho Seok takes a break from insulting his driver (hope that’s what Ho Seok’s reduced to doing after all his money’s conned out of him. The jerk!), Bang Pil Gyu asks him if he’s handled what he asked him to. Ho Seok agrees to having done it and wonders at how hard the people from the Taxation Office must have pushed that Bang Pil Gyu had made him put such plan in play (oh boy. This won’t be good for Sung Hee at all). Bang Pil Gyu simply replies that they’d tried hard and calls them jerks (duck for cover Sung Hee).
10. The team agrees to help out Sung Il (awwwww)
Sung Il’s not able to get any sleep all night as he keeps thinking about the ‘promised’ gift Jung Do had said he had for him. He tries grabbing his wife’s car keys but she catches him in the act and so he has to walk to the warehouse (hahaha). Meanwhile, at the warehouse, Jung Do just finished talking to the team who are silent, except for Mi Joo who asks why they have to do ‘it’. Jung Do explains that it’s not a must they do it, but asks if they don’t feel sorry for Sung Il who unlike them is a person of justice. He reminds them that con artists such as they are don’t usually care about the law, but with Ma Jin Seok, they’d worked towards abiding by the law. He tells them that this is the first time he’s felt the way he’s presently feeling at the end of a job. When he asks them if it wasn’t fun, Bang Sil gives a brief snort and Jung Do smiles as he suggests they help Sung Il who’s helped them actually do something meaningful for once. As he speaks, we see Sung Il walking over to the warehouse and by the time he gets to Bang Sil’s car, he nods in greeting to Ji Yeon who smiles and nods back at him (shocking him and me too. Awwww. Sung Il…) and Sung Il gives a little smile. Jung Do quotes the constitution about people needing to pay taxes and states that Sung Il joined hands with swindlers like themselves in order to keep that constitution. He tells them that they can go back to where they belong but people like Sung Il need to stay just because they’re needed for justice to prevail. Jung Do then asks who’s in and they all look at each other. Shortly after, Sung Il joins them (wait, why do I see Ji Yeon in with the others? Hadn’t she been in the car when Sung Il had greeted her and walked past her? Did she disappear? Fly? does she have a twin? Is this a different day from when he’d been walking to the warehouse?). He’s stunned when he gets a good look at the walls and sees it papered with dossiers on all the tax evaders on his team’s list and Jung Do tells him that they will stop his dismissal. He smiles as he asks Sung Il if 300 people’s back taxes will do (wow!). Sung Il smiles gratefully and everyone else smiles as well (awwww).
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
If anything, maybe the slap will get Sung Hee off her high horse and realize that negotiating with Ma Jin Seok would be doing the exact same thing Sung Il had told her that he didn’t want to do anymore: stooping low in order to do his work. She’s willing to go behind Sung Il’s back to clearly do something he’s warned her that he doesn’t want to do and it’s annoying.
Headache inducing moment:
None in this episode.
This episode’s a French 21. Because it’s an episode of celebration and fun. From Ma Jin Seok getting his just desserts (and thank you awesome drama gods for granting my wish in the first episode and making him the first con of our Con Squad) to the Con Squad coming together to help big teddy bear Sung Il. Sure there’s a bit of a damper with the next powerful person our team will eventually have to face off, but so far, this episode ends on a happy, happy note :D.
