When you have a slimy know-it-all cop on your tail, the best thing to do is to stand up to him and refuse to back down. The team come together in a beautiful interplay of them working off each other’s strongest assets. Ma Jin Seok keeps falling for the con and has no idea he’s being brilliantly played. Everything comes to a screeching halt though with the appearance of Jae Sung, but Jung Do’s determined to see it to the end.
Top 10 Moments:
- Jung Do’s concussion proof
Whilst reeling from the hit his car had taken, Jung Do flashes back to his first meeting with Sung Hee when she’d come to interview for a part-time job position. Jung Do had been so taken with her that he’d stepped out of the con and advised Sung Hee not to take the job. He even goes as far as promising to hook her up with another job and Sung Hee gratefully smiles. Back in the presently, Jung Do drags himself, bleeding from a head wound, and most likely suffering from a concussion, from the bashed car. He reaches in to pick up a car key, locates yet another of the numerous used cars he’s parked all over the city and resumes his trip to the Hwaseong City. Meanwhile Ma Jin Seok and Sung Il are fast approaching Hwaseong City and are only an hour away. With Jung Do moping up blood and racing to make it in time, he sends a message to Sung Il to ask him to stall for time. Sung Il takes a restroom break and calls Deok Bae for help and soon Deok Bae has all his men chasing after a supposedly stolen white sedan, which turns out to be Ma Jin Seok’s car (hahahaha). Unaware that he’s picked up the police on his heels, Ma Jin Seok expresses his concern that Sung Il’s just stalling for time and warns Sung Il that should he find out that Sung Il is playing him, he will make sure Sung Il pays.
2. Deok Bae pulls through for his friend
Thankfully, Deok Bae pulls through for his friend because soon a cop is flagging down Ma Jin Seok to inform him that his car was identified as stolen. Ma Jin Seok is pissed and annoyed because he’s driven his car for years and there is no way the car’s stolen but the cop is pretty insistent. Soon Ma Jin Seok is throwing his ID to her, and stepping out of the car when she insists that he follow her to the police station. Ma Jin Seok is a a moment away from hitting her as the cop accuses of him of obstructing justice when he refuses to cop with her to the station, when Deok Bae joins the fray. Whilst Ma Jin Seok’s explaining what’s happened, Sung Il catches a glimpse of Jung Do who drives by and is soon on his way to Hwaseong City (whew! That was close). Next thing we see, Deok Bae’s apologizing that they’d gotten the plate number wrong and Ma Jin Seok grumbles about the police learning to do their job correctly, even as he huffs and drives away (you’re pure awesomeness Deok Bae).
3. Jung Do’s convincingly a worker at Hwaseong City
Bang Sil heads to the prison to talk with Mr. Kim about the business development plan she’s working on. After their conversation’s done, Mr. Kim brings up the fact that he’d heard that Bang Sil had pulled out of her deal with Jung Do. Bang Sil informs him about the police getting involved and when Mr. Kim chuckles that she’s lost her claws, Bang Sil uses the opportunity to ask if little Jung Do really did save Chairman Wang. She’s surprised when Mr. Kim explains that Jung Do actually saved the chairman’s life twice. Meanwhile, the man himself has gotten to Hwaseong City and calls Sung Il to let him know that he’s set. He heads to the bathroom (doesn’t the place have security or some some of protocols in place?) where he cleans up, complete with an outfit change and a pair of glasses. Next, he walks to the noticeboard where he spots the details of Kim Sang Pil, one of the team leaders at the City Development office. He heads out and calls the man to come move his vehicle and then parks his own car right in front of the man’s car, thus blocking the man in and keeping him occupied for the duration of the scam. Next he walks into the office, taking note of the little things on the desks of the members on Sang Pil’s team and then is able to talk to them about work whilst berating them about them using their personal life to get distracted at work. It’s enough to have them subdued and have them talking to him with respect, as they assume he’s some sort of senior officer. It’s this that scene that Sung Il and Ma Jin Seok see when they get to Hwaseong City.
4. Ma Jin Seok takes the bait
With Ma Jin Seok somewhat convinced that Jung Do works at Hwaseong City, Jung Do leads him the land that is about to be developed. Ma Jin Seok though isn’t totally convinced as he tries to ascertain that the profit is really 5 times the investment, smiling as he points out to Jung Do that it’s a lot of money and he wants a guarantee. Whilst Sung Il acts all frustrated about Ma Jin Seok’s trust issues, Jung Do smiles and lays the bait by telling Sung Il to forget about the 5% commission Ma Jin Seok was going to give him as Jung Do can introduce him to someone who would give him a 10% commission. Sung Il tries to plead with Jung Do but Jung Do spins around to confront Ma Jin Seok that if he’s so wary about making his investment and he wants a guaranteed investment instead, he should go put his money in the bank. He tells Ma Jin Seok to just think of his coming there as him getting some fresh air, and he should forget about the property as Jung Do has a lot of people lined up and interested in it. Sung Il’s nearly out of his mind at everything going awry but Ma Jin Seok just bursts into a smile as he tells Sung Il and Jung Do that he Jung Do’s his kind of person: decisive and fiery tempered and that he likes Jung Do. Sung Il’s delighted at the words and Ma Jin Seok asks how much he should invest. Jung Do tells him to invest four million dollars as it would be doubled into twenty (I thought they wanted to get six million from him? What about the other two million?) and turns around to breathe a sigh of relief and to allow himself smile.
5. Finding a way to get Sung Il to keep his job
Having been informed that the disciplinary committee will meet for Sung Il’s supposed bribery case, Sung Hee at first goes to Commissioner Ahn to try and get him to drop the case and help Sung Il keep his job. Commissioner Ahn however is not interested in doing anything to help Sung Il and Sung Hee slinks out of his office. Except, No Seung drags her to the rooftop to tell her he’s figured out how they could save Sung Il’s job. Bringing out several sheafs of papers, he tells her of a connection between Ma Jin Seok and Bang Pil Gyu which his team had discovered when they’d been the one chasing after Ma Jin Seok. He explains that Pil Gyu invests money with Ma Jin Seok who then invests it and then sends a larger amount than the invested amount to Pil Gyu. He tells her that Pil Gyu who owes 50 million dollars in taxes (wow. And I’d thought Ma Jin Seok’s six million taxes were a lot) is connected to Choi Chul Woo, a chairman of a company who had participated in a pyramid scheme and who owes 100 million dollars in taxes (And the amount just keeps getting higher. I take it they will be our ultimate baddies somewhere down the line?). No Seung ends it by telling Sung Hee that if they are able to apprehend Pil Gyu, Sung Il will be able to keep his job (so you want think you’ll be able to get Pil Gyu when you can’t even pick up small fry Ma Jin Seok? Good guys are so delusional).
6. The team converges on Ma Jin Seok
Our con team continues with their plan of conning Ma Jin Seok out of money and Jung Do begs Sung Il to once again stall Ma Jin Seok to give the team even more time so they can plant the designed phishing website for the land they want to sell to Ma Jin Seok in Ma Jin Seok’s office. Sung Il agrees and whilst they’re headed back, he asks Ma Jin Seok to stop by at a restaurant so they can get something to eat. Ma Jin Seok who’s in a good mood because of the land and his meeting with Jung Do agrees. Whilst Sung Il’s busy feeding Ma Jin Seok a line about being allergic to beansprout and taking forever with removing each and everyone that’s found its way into his soup, Hak Joo makes it to Ma Jin Seok’s apartment and installs the website on the man’s personal computer. Meanwhile, Ja Wang and Mi Joo head to Ma Jin Seok’s office building, pretending to be an inspection team with City Hall. They almost get in but they get busted by the person in charge of building who shows up in time to state that someone from City Hall had already come to check out the building the previous week. Realizing that it’s a no go, Mi Joo and Ja Wang abort the mission and when Jung Do informs Sung Il, Sung Il informs him that he will handle it himself. Next thing we know, Sung Il’s calling one of his colleagues and giving him a tip about a potential five millions possible tax collection tip, and the colleague packs his entire team and heads to Ma Jin Seok’s office, causing an uproar as they demand to be let in. In the fracas, Jung Do’s able to sneak into Ma Jin Seok’s office and hours of Hak Joo spying on Ma Jin Seok gives them Ma Jin Seok’s computer password, meaning Jung Do is able to install the phishing website, add it to Ma Jin Seok’s bookmarked pages and get away before Ma Jin Seok shows up at the office.
7. Jae Sung is still scum and is onto our guys
The team pulls up in front of Sung Il who Ma Jin Seok had dropped by the side of the road after he’d gotten the call about the tax collectors. Sung Il’s bashful but Jung Do breaks out into an impressed smile of what Sung Il was able to pull off. Unknown to them however, Jae Sun’s taking pictures of their meet and as the watches them drive off, he smiles to himself as he says that Jung Do’s going back to prison (no he isn’t! Shut up you piece of scum!).
8. Getting the players to play the game
Unaware of Jae Sung, the man of doom, the con team continue with their plans and Hak Joo is introduced to Ma Jin Seok as Jung Do’s colleague and Mi Joo hires actors to play the role of landowners. The actors, acting as landowners meet with Hak Joo and Ma Jin Seok and according to the prior agreement with Hak Joo negotiate for a higher price at which they would be willing to sell the land. Ma Jin Seok’s delighted at the agreed price, but then going according to the plan, Sung Il drops the bomb that the landowners learned about the land development and have decided they aren’t going to sell. When Ma Jin Seok responds all frustrated, Sung Il convincingly gets him to raise the money to six million dollars (and does it so well that Jung Do and I are very impressed). When Ma Jin Seok agrees, it’s then onto the actor landowners who keep raising the price until they meet just the right price to swindle Ma Jin Seok out of the entire investment money he’d wanted to put aside. Hak Joo meets with Ma Jin Seok to hand him the contract and Jae Sung is outside the restaurant to witness the exchange and figures that the gang will soon set out to meet. When the mean looking man with him asks him when he thinks the meet will occur, Jae Sung smiles.
9. Jung Do’s planning something else and the disciplinary action creeps closer
Jung Do meets with Hak Joo first at a restaurant without as much customers and both he and Jung Do talk about something he’s meant to do for Jung Do and the money plus the 200 thousand dollars he was meant to deposit for Jung Do. He tells Jung Do to make sure that Jung Do makes up for it and Jung Do replies that Hak Joo should make sure it’s all set. Their conversation is interrupted by Sung Il who wonders what they’re talking about and Jung Do lies that they’re talking about Ma Jin Seok. Jung Do gives a passing comment about hoping nothing goes wrong (I hope nothing goes wrong either, but bringing it up is just setting yourself up to be jinxed) and tells Hak Joo to make sure to call him the next day after Ma Jin Seok signs the contract. He leaves Hak Joo and Sung Il and walks away whilst Sung Il gets a notification about the disciplinary action which has him at his office packing his things. Sung Hee finds him there and immediately asks him why he’s packing when nothing has been decided yet. Sung Il though just keeps on packing and Sung Hee tells him that the moment is one where he should be thinking of how to survive and not how to bring down Ma Jin Seok. Sung Il replies that he is aware of that, but it’s just too painful to struggle to survive. He tells Sung Il that no matter what decision the disciplinary committee reaches he won’t stoop too low to survive. He leaves and Sung Hee calls No Seung and agrees to his plan.
10. Jae Sung strikes
After clearing his desk, Sung Il heads home where a visitor is waiting for him. The visitor it turns out, is Jae Sung (drats!). Next we see Jae Sung paying a visit to Jung Do who he informs that he’s onto him. When Jung Do tries to deny it, Jae Sung tosses the property document at him and tells him that he’s been tailing him and his gang ever since he’d gotten the tip off from Noh Deok Gi. As he speaks, we see some detectives show up at Hak Joo’s who is unable to escape. Jae Sung comes closer to Jung Do as he tells him not to even try to run as he can smell Jung Do’s sweat. As Jung Do just looks down, silent, Jae Sung tells him that he’s still a detective because he can see everything. And as he says so, we see all the team members being brought to the station in handcuffs, from Hak Joo to Sung Il. When he mentions Sung Il being arrested, Jung Do looks up sharply and he says it’s too bad Jung Do gave him a reason to come after him. Jung Do tries to get out of it by saying that money hasn’t exchanged hands so it’s technically not fraud but Jae Sung replies that he will release the others in 48 hours. Jung Do on the other hand will be free, so he can sign the contract with Ma Jin Seok after which Jae Sung will be putting him in jail. He tells Jung Do that he’s only telling him that so Jung Do can make the right decision and walk away, adding that he won’t even be bothered to go that far for his son. The words though have the opposite effect on Jung Do who looks up at him and tells him that he will go personally, to get Ma Jin Seok to sign the document and then he glares at Jae Sung and tells him to come after him as all he’ll do is keep running.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because he called Sung Il an idiot and no one gets to call Sung Il an idiot. So last episode he hit Jung Do and in this episode, he’s feeling very happy that he arrested our con team. In other words, he has me pretty damn pissed. Argh! Asshole.
Headache inducing moment:
None. Maybe it’s because Sung Hee didn’t really get the time to mess things up for our guys.
This episode’s a Slojito. It’s sharp and sweet and punchy, leading to a divine hour where our team comes together to show strong teamwork in getting Man Jin Seok. I’m so proud of how far Sung Il’s come and even with Jae Sung coming in to capture our guys, I still believe that this team, will come out on top.
