Everyone comes together to bring Gil Do down but we have the first casualty and it’s depressingly Tae Ha. So Tae Sub’s risen as our new big bad and Gil Do’s injured, broken and on the run. Moo Myeong’s still obsessed with bringing Gil Do down and we race headlong into the big finish.
Top 10 Moments:
- Partners in crime but still so distrustful
After killing Congressman Choi, Gil Do runs roughshod over So Tae Sub’s warnings that So Tae Sub had as well, taken over a vacant seat and he will destroy Gil Do if he continues to live like a beast. Gil Do isn’t interested in the words and So Tae Sub finally says he can have the seat. Meanwhile, a flashback shows that Sung Rok had survived because he’d warned Dokku that he’d set things in place to make sure that should he die, So Tae Sub would discover that Da Hae is Gil Do’s biological daughter. The words had worked because Dokku had come to save him just as he was about to be buried alive and now Sung Rok wants the same deal Yeo Kyung had offered Dokku: full immunity and in return he would not only testify but offer Yeo Kyung all the evidence she needs to nail Gil Do on his numerous charges. The next morning, Yeo Kyung’s anxiously looking for Congressman Choi but investigator Kim rushes in to switch the TV to the news report stating that the congressman committed suicide due to all the pressure he’s been facing. Yeo Kyung doesn’t seem to believe the claims and neither does Tae Ha. Gil Do on the other hand is at So Tae Sub’s office, smiling as he thanks the congressman for helping him cover things up so well and So Tae Sub tells him to lie low and wait for his nomination. When Gil Do asks for the money he’d given So Tae Sub, So Tae Sub requests for the military document in return. Gil Do isn’t giving it up until he’s in congress though as the document’s his collateral.
2. Prosecutor Ahn is out for blood and the friends fracture even more
Prosecutor Ahn delivers the news that they’ve been ordered to drop their investigation whilst he’s been informed that he will be replaced at the prosecutor office. When Yeo Kyung apologizes and states that she’s to blame, Prosecutor Ahn agrees but then tells her to make sure to get Gil Do. He uses the analogy of a player receiving a red card in football and states that no matter how much the player pleads, they end up having to leave the field kicking and cursing anyway. He tells Yeo Kyung that he can still offer her assistance until he’s replaced and when she asks him why he’s helping, he makes reference to his face being smashed into a bowl of noodles and walks out of the room. Meanwhile, Gil Do walks into Goongnakwon and orders that his framed picture be removed from the hall of fame of Goongnakwon Master of Noodles. Tae Ha wants to take it down but Gil Yong is too obvious as he insists that he will take it down himself. Gil Do’s suspicious as is Tae Ha and Tae Ha catches Gil Yong removing the defense military report he’d hidden at the back of the painting, based on Yeo Kyung’s orders. When Tae Ha volunteers to hide it safely, Gil Yong refuses to hand it to him stating that he can’t trust Tae Ha now that Tae Ha works for Gil Do (awww. You guys, come on. You used to be good friends once. Remember?). When Tae Ha explains to him that whoever has the document will die, whether it’s Gil Yong or Yeo Kyung, Gil Yong immediately reverts to being the awesome friend as he worriedly asks Tae Ha what would happen to Tae Ha if the document is found on Tae Ha. Their talk is interrupted by Yeo Kyung who states that she wants all four of them to meet.
3. The gang meets and Hyun Jung carries out her side of the bargain
Whilst Moo Myeong’s at Chimyeon Restaurant coming to the conclusion that a cockroach like Congressman Choi couldn’t have killed himself and either Gil Do or So Tae Sub is responsible, Yeo Kyung, Tae Ha and Gil Yong all walk in to meet him (firstly, you guys all know that that’s Gil Do’s restaurant right? Why would you choose somewhere like that for your meeting point. What if Gil Do’s got his eyes on the place already, especially because he suspects Moo Myeong and Tae Ha). Yeo Kyung explains that her suggestion is for them to hand the military document to So Tae Sub so he won’t need Gil Do anymore and they can then go after Gil Do and have him arrested after the cooking show. Although Tae Ha expresses concern that doing that would mean that they can’t prosecute So Tae Sub and So Tae Sub will go after Yeo Kyung, Yeo Kyung’s feeling reassured because she believes So Tae Sub won’t touch her as long as she’s a prosecutor (hope he doesn’t prove you wrong Yeo Kyung). Moo Myeong agrees to Yeo Kyung’s plan and Yeo Kyung states that they’d all been going after Gil Do individually but now it’s time for them to unite and bring him down together. Meanwhile Hyun Jung meets with Gil Do who’s at first wary of appearing on camera because he’s no longer the Master of Noodles. Hyun Jung though reminds him of the fact that politics is all about pretending, pretending to be just, to care for the weak and pretending to be sincere. When she advises Gil Do to just have some fun and take advantage of the stage she’s set, he agrees and Hyun Jung calls Moo Myeong to deliver the message.
4. Seol Mi Ja now runs Goongnakwon and Tae Ha goes poking the dragon
Gil Do calls a meeting, the purpose of which is to inform those gathered: Gang Sook, Seol Mi Ja, Da Hae and Moo Myeong about his plans to run unencumbered for Congress. And to allow himself run unencumbered, he informs the room that he needs to distance himself from Goongnakwon and so transfers ownership of his shares to Seol Mi Ja. She makes her first decision as the majority share holder by refusing to accept Moo Myeong as Gil Do’s successor and states that he must prove to her that his tastebuds work quite well by preparing the Royal Pheasant Buckwheat noodles at the live cooking show. Moo Myeong agrees (wait what? Can you actually pull it off or is it all some sort of ruse) and states his own condition that should he win, then Seol Mi Ja must agree to make him the Master of Noodles. Seol Mi Ja agrees to his terms. Meanwhile So Tae Sub is in his office, brooding about Gil Do and Yeo Kyung trying to play him. His moment is interrupted by Tae Ha who he knows to be Gil Do’s man and who comes holding out the defense ministry report. Tae Ha’s terms are simple, So Tae Sub must follow every instruction given to him by Yeo Kyung and Tae Ha would hand him the document. Should he come after Tae Ha without fulfilling his side of the deal, then Tae Ha would leak the document to the press. So Tae Sub agrees but warns Tae Ha that the game he’s playing will see him dead because Tae Ha has played his last card. When he tells Tae Ha that Tae Ha will remember his words when Tae Ha lays dying, Tae Ha smiles as he replies that he will think of someone when he dies, but it won’t be So Tae Sub. With that he leaves and ducks before Yeo Kyung can see him. So when she meets with So Tae Sub, it goes smoothly although when she tells So Tae Sub that she wants his helping in nailing Gil Do, So Tae Sub pluralizes that none of them are aware of how the world works and that’s what terrifies him. He doesn’t clarify the ‘them’ to Yeo Kyung and simply tells her to make sure she catches Gil Do when she gets the chance.
5. Tae Ha and Da Hae go out on a date
Tae Ha runs into Da Hae at Goongnakwon and asks her out. She’s thrilled at the invite and spends some time preening in front of the mirror before heading out to meet him. Whilst waiting for her, Tae Ha remembers So Tae Sub’s words but doesn’t dwell on it and instead takes Da Hae on their date to a secluded nook where they eat dumplings (hahahaha. And Da Hae grumbling that he’s proven that he really has never been on a date is so hilarious as well). They dig into the food and Tae Ha tells Da Hae about finding out at the charnel house that she’s Gil Do’s daughter. Da Hae doesn’t want to talk about it but Tae Ha tells her about his past as a murderer’s son and how he’d tried to run away from that fact and found himself at Goongnakwon. He tells her that he’s decided not to run away from it anymore and she shouldn’t either because no matter who her father is or what he’s done, it’s not her fault and she should endure it from where she stands. Da Hae asks him though to hold onto her should it look like she wants to run away and Tae Ha agrees. Done with their date and headed back to the car, Da Hae tells Tae Ha that he smells of car, sweat and dumplings, which combined means he smells like Tae Ha. She gives him a quick peck on the lips and makes to leave but Tae Ha pulls her back and kisses her (smooth. Our boy’s got smooth moves :D). And then, he kisses her again. Da Hae calls him a player and he says she was his first kiss and now he’s just had his second kiss with her (Gah! Tae Ha’s just too cute).
6. Moo Myeong’s insistent on doing things his way and So Tae Sub keeps his end of the bargain
Whilst the crew sets up in Goongnakwon for the live cooking show, Da Hae comes to meet Moo Myeong in his office (Gil Do’s former office) to ask how he’s doing. She suggests helping him out seeing that his sense of taste still hasn’t returned yet and suggests hand gestures that can be used to delineate the different tastes. Moo Myeong gently turns her down though, stating that it’s something he intends to do on his own. Meanwhile, So Tae Sub considers Tae Ha’s words and places a call to the head prosecutor. Almost immediately Prosecutor Ahn walks into Yeo Kyung’s office with an order for an immediate arrest (most likely for Gil Do) and one for the non-indictment of Sung Rok. With those two documents in hand, Yeo Kyung heads out with Inspector Kim, to Goongnakwon.
7. Gil Do’s unraveling
Whilst hooking on his mic, Hyun Jung briefs Moo Myeong on the details of the cooking show whilst Moo Myeong tells her what shirt the spectator who she should take a question from would be wearing. And in the meanwhile, Yeo Kyung is hurrying to make it in time to the cooking show whilst everyone, from Seol Mi Ja and Gang Sook to Da Hae and Tae Ha all settle down. As planned, Hyun Jung points to the man in red who turns out to be Sung Rok. Even as Gil Do can’t believe his eyes, Sung Rok drops the first bomb of the day by asking Gil Do how it feels to murder and to instigate a murder. The crowd breaks out in murmurs and Sung Rok is escorted out, even as he meets Gil Do’s stony face with a smile. Next up is Moo Myeong who tells his story, starting from how his father lived for noodles and had perfected the Royal Pheasant Buckwheat noodles, to when his father had been killed by a trusted friend and then that friend had stolen the recipe, his father’s name and killed Moo Myeong’s mother as well. The crowd breaks out in confusion (and might I add that Seol Mi Ja is looking particularly shocked. So she didn’t know all along the entire truth and had gone pallying up with Gil Do?). Moo Myeong ends it all by stating Gil Do’s real name: Kim Gil Do and holds up the wanted poster with Gil Do’s face on it. Gil Do walks away from the stage, dazed and stunned as he wonders when it all started to go wrong, especially when all he’d wanted to do was simply live his life. As he gets to the door, Yeo Kyung walks in with Inspector Kim in tow to complete the humiliation and arrest Gil Do.
8. Gil Do makes his escape
In the car, Gil Do screams Moo Myeong’s biological name: Choi Soon Seok. Yeo Kyung though tells him to shut up and enjoy the view as he’s going somewhere where he wouldn’t be seeing outside ever again. Moo Myeong then asks why in the case of arrest, a suspects hands are cuffed but his head is allowed to move freely (wait? Is he planning on biting someone ear off and then diving head first out of a moving vehicle?). Even as Yeo Kyung is processing the words, Gil Do headbutts the two investigators beside him (seriously though? Is it that easy to take down two grown men) grabs hold of the wheel and crashes the car. Conveniently, he’s the only one who is conscious at the time of the crash and he is able to make his escape.
9. Moo Myeong doesn’t know when to stop
Whilst everyone from Gang Sook to Seol Mi Ja to Da Hae is dealing with the shocking news, Moo Myeong’s in his office watching the news report about Gil Do’s escape. Tae Ha enters the office to give him the good news that Yeo Kyung would be alright and points out that with everything that’s happened, Moo Myeong should be satisfied with what he’s done. Moo Myeong though isn’t satisfied as he replies that his revenge will only be complete when he sees Gil Do’s face when Gil Do loses everything. Tae Ha replies that Gil Do should do what he wants whilst he will do what he wants. In the meanwhile, he tells Gil Do that Gil Do can look after Yeo Kyung from that moment on as he’s done paying his debt to her and it’s now Moo Myeong’s turn. Moo Myeong looks like he’s wondering what’s going on, but he doesn’t ask any questions.
10. The first casualty: Tae Ha
Da Hae’s kidnapped by the henchmen hired by So Tae Sub who’s learned of her identity courtesy of the DNA test he has in his possession (wonder who sent it to him. Yeo Kyung? Cuz if she did, Tae Ha would never forgive her). He sends images of her gagged and bound to Tae Ha and gives him a location to bring the document to. Next So Tae Sub picks up a call from Gil Do who tries to make a deal for So Tae Sub to help him, using the military report. So Tae Sub though drops the bomb that he’s aware that Gil Do doesn’t have the document and then he sends Gil Do pictures of a bound and gagged Da Hae, telling him that she’s involved in the mess because she’s his daughter. He tells Gil Do to come to a warehouse and to be prepared to lay down his life for his daughter (why do I have a feeling that Tae Ha and Gil Do are heading to the same location?). The first person to get to the warehouse though is Tae Ha and when So Tae Sub asks for the document, he asks to confirm that Da Hae is fine first. Da Hae is released in the middle of nowhere beside a ringing phone. When she picks, Tae Ha confirms that she’s alright and promises to take her out to somewhere nicer the next time (why’s my heart already pounding at this. I have a bad feeling about this). He also tells her to never forget his smell and Da Hae starts to cry, telling him not to do whatever it is that he’s planning on doing as she would never forgive him if he does. Tae Ha hangs up and calls Dokku next to ask him to look after Da Hae. He hangs up in the midst of Dokku asking him what’s wrong. That done, he tosses the document at So Tae Sub and tells him that they should end things. So Tae Sub then walks out of the room and whilst Da Hae sheds heart wrenching tears (and me right alongside her), we cut back to Tae Ha, in a pool of blood, exhaling in short shallow breaths (I think my heart just stopped).
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Headache inducing moment:
Because those words, said in that tone with that music playing and the big bad that’s So Tae Sub right behind him, surrounded by all those men has might heart already breaking even as I’m crying because Tae Ha has to make it out of this alive and I don’t know if he will.
This episode’s a blood orange bloody Mary because bloody is the only one that comes to mind with all the action and the heartbreak. Our heart’s been pulverized and I don’t think I can survive the finale.
