Seo Woo might have deluded herself for the past 13 years that she doesn’t know the root of her dislike for Hye Jung but Tae Ho’s called it out for what it is: Jealousy. Hye Jung meets Yoon Do and butts head with him immediately. Seo Woo is still feeding her own insecurities whilst Ji Hong and Hye Jung meet up after 13 years and Ji Hong’s ready to get his (fully-grown. Thank heavens) woman this time around.
Top 10 Moments:
- Success looks great on Hye Jung
We start with Hye Jung at the mall telling us that success comes with its perks: the way people see you changes. We see her stop at a jewelry store and when points out a pair of earrings that she would like to check out, the attendant passes it on to her and calls her pretty (and you are. You’re very pretty Hye Jung). She tells us that she found it out when she succeeded, and she also learned that success is nothing without someone to share it with. As she walks to her car, she tells us that she lost the only family she ever had and as she applies her make up she tells us that she also lost the desire to make another family too and so she chose a car over a home. As she drives to her hospital, she tells us that still, there are those things you lose that you cannot forget. Next we see her in the hospital examining the CT scan of the mob boss with Kyung Joon and Kang Soo.Taking the chance to train the two residents, she asks them what they can read from he scans and whilst Kang Soo is not sure about his own diagnosis, Kyung Joon is pretty confident about his. Hye Jung tells them that one is sure about what isn’t definitive (Kyung Joon) and the other isn’t sure about what he should be sure about (Kang Soo). She tells Kyung Joon that he knows nothing because as a fourth year resident, he’s confusing the two hemorrhages together. She rises and says they should prepare for emergency surgery but Kyung Joon tells her that they can’t and starts to talk about the doctor on call. Hye Jung reminds him though that the patient might die and when Kyung Joon talks about protocol and not wanting to get into trouble with Yoon Do, Hye Jung asks him if he’s jeopardizing a patient’s life so he can stay out of trouble. Kyung Joon tries to say she too will get into trouble but Hye Jung tells him to prepare the room, and she heads out. Alone, Kyung Joon and Kang Soo talk about her fighting skills and whilst Kyung Joon is surprised at her ability and claims that the mobsters probably went easy on her because she’s a woman. Kang Soo though thinks she’s awesome (we agree Kang Soo) and when he asks Kyung Joon if he’s not going to prepare the operating room, Kyung Joon weighs the fact that both Yoon Do and Hye Jung will kill him if he doesn’t carry out their orders. However, Hye Jung is the one closer at the moment so he decides to follow her orders. Meanwhile, in the ambulance, Yoon Do is teasing Seo Woo about how she’d panicked when the woman had collapsed and Seo Woo lies that she’d been dragged into a burning building by a bully and because of her trauma, she’s wary of threatening others and being threatened by them. When Yoon Do asks her if she’s sure she wasn’t intolerable, Seo Woo claims that she fought with the bully in the name of justice and she’s sure the girl is now wandering in and out of prison. The girl is at the moment, performing surgery and kicking ass at it. When Yoon Do and Seo Woo get to the hospital, Yoon Do throws his hissy fit and leaves and when Seo Woo wonders why Kyung Joon would go against his orders when he knows how short a temper Yoon Do has, Kyung Joon replies that Seo Woo’s only talking like that because she’s not yet met the new fellow. At Seo Woo’s questioning look, he tells her that there can be only one sun and then walks off.
2. Some friends are new and some stay the same
Seo Woo heads to the on-call room where Young Kook, her new friend, is practicing sutures. When Seo Woo asks him if he’d seen the new fellow in action, Young Kook answers that he heard all the commotion and dramatizes. Seo Woo wonders why she’s never heard of the doctor and Young Kook asks her how her confession went. She sighs as she says she didn’t do it because he had emergency surgery. Young Kook advises her not to tell Yoon Do as Yoon Do likes to be in control. Seo Woo answers that she likes to be in control, at love and at work. Young Kook also mentions it seems like a bad time to make a confession because Yoon Do is pissed at the Fellow that went against his command and Seo Woo states that it’s a bad start for the Fellow. When Young Kook mentions the fact that now Seo Woo will have to fight for a promotion, Seo Woo snaps as to why Young Kook will compare her to a doctor from a no-name college (girl, your father went to a no-name college. What the hell are you talking about?). Young Kook replies that the girl won’t be a pushover though as she was chosen directly by the head of their department. The words surprise Seo Woo. Meanwhile, Hye Jung is out of surgery and she tells the mobsters that it was a successful one. The deputy mobster whose nose she’d broken tests the waters by asking if she’s married (hahahaha), and Hye Jung just walks away. Yoon Do though is angry, calling Hye Jung a neurosurgery psycho who doesn’t trust others (dude, that will be you. Not her), and demands that Kyung Joon should tell Hye Jung to wait for him until he’s done with his surgery. When Kang Soo barges into the locker room whilst Hye Jung’s changing to deliver the message, Hye Jung (fully dressed), slings her arms around Kang Soo and tells him that she hates to wait. To that effect, she texts Yoon Do that she will be at the cafe by the hospital and Yoon Do is amazed at her audacity. Hye Jung though doesn’t care because she’s heading there to see Soon Hee (yay! Soon Hee) who she hands the gift she’d bought from the jewelry store. Soon Hee figures Hye Jung remembered Mal Soon because she only gets her gifts like that when the memory hits, but she’s thrilled at the present. Soon Hee asks if Hye Jung has run into Seo Woo, saying that Seo Woo’s father owns the hospital and Seo Woo is now a doctor there (I think she knows Soon Hee. That look in her eyes says she chose the hospital on purpose). Soon Hee is thrilled at the thought of Seo Woo’s face when she learns that Hye Jung’s now a doctor (hahahaha. As are we Soon Hee), whilst Hye Jung’s stressed out at the prospect. To cheer each other up, they relax like besties with fruit juices and a great view. Their time together is interrupted however by Yoon Do sending Hye Jung a message to run to the hospital immediately.
3. Hye Jung meets Yoon Do and Seo Woo
Kang Soo searches online for Hye Jung and is amazed at her credentials and how popular she was in her previous hospital. He concludes that she’s so good she will probably butt heads with Yoon Do and wonders why she was willing to settle for a Fellow position at Kookil Hospital. Meanwhile, Hye Jung heads to Yoon Do’s office where he first takes his sweet time to look up at her, and when he does, he mentions that he’d told her to run and she’d taken her sweet time instead. He asks her if she’d not gotten his message to stay and Hye Jung replies that she had and she’d sent him her own message in return. Yoon Do though wonders why he has to meet her one-on-one outside the hospital (hahahaha. Dude, when you start to like her and you want her to meet you for a date, I shall hope you remember today). Hye Jung replies that she didn’t know Yoon Do will take it that way and apologizes. Yoon Do replies that “this one too is apologizing” (dude, don’t talk to Hye Jung like that!) and says that the people he hates are those that do things they have to apologize for. When he asks Hye Jung why she performed the emergency surgery, Hye Jung starts to explain that she always heads to the emergency room when she first starts working at a hospital but Yoon Do cuts in by telling her that he has no interest in her personal life (dude, you will eat those words). Hye Jung then tells him that the patient’s chart will show that she had to act decisively and fast and perform the surgery. Yoon Do though is convinced that Hye Jung acted that way to show off and informs her he intends to call a conference to find out whether or not the surgery was needed. Hye Jung tells him that she has nothing against that, but that if it is proved that she is right, then he must apologize to her. Yoon Do then talks to the fact that Hye Jung seems to not have any interest in being a staff member and asks her why that’s so. Hye Jung reminds him about him saying he has no interest in her personal life and when Yoon Do claims to have changed his mind she tells him that she only tells people she’s close to personal things about herself. Yoon Do concludes that he will never know her reason then because he has no intention of ever being close to her (never say never Yoon Do). Their conversation is interrupted by Seo Woo who is surprised when she recognizes Hye Jung and that Hye Jung is now a doctor. Hye Jung asks her if seeing her still annoys Seo Woo and leaves but Seo Woo chases after her to express her disdain and surprise that someone like Hye Jung is now a doctor and working at the same hospital as herself (girl, sit your ass down). When she brings up Hye Jung’s past, Hye Jung informs her that she doesn’t hide her past or announce it either and wonders if Seo Woo intends to post things online about her like she’d done in the past. Seo Woo replies though that her doing it kept Ji Hong’s life from being ruined (yeah right). She states that she’s sure that Hye Jung came there because she learned that Ji Hong will soon start working at the hospital and nothing Hye Jung says would convince her otherwise. When she tells Hye Jung to leave the hospital then if Hye Jung wants her to believe her, Hye Jung tells her that she will leave when she chooses to and then she walks away. Seo Woo calls out to her that Ji Hong married In Joo and so Hye Jung shouldn’t even think about doing anything but Hye Jung doesn’t even bother responding to her and keeps walking (you go Hye Jung. Don’t listen to that 30 year old woman still acting like a teenager. Wonder when she will grow up).
4. After 13 years, our OTP meets again
Ji Hong’s on a plane staring at a fellow passenger whose wrist keeps shaking and giving little spasms. The woman though assumes Ji Hong’s flirting with her and even when Ji Hong explains that he’s a doctor, she still thinks he’s overstepping his boundaries, particularly because he points out the fact that the spasms could likely be a result of a brain malfunction. The passenger huffs as she tells him that she’s 25 years old and can’t be having brain malfunctions (I take it you haven’t seen children and babies also thus affected) and makes to walk away, except she falls right in the middle of the aisle and Ji Hong immediately gets on it and applies first aid using what he can find on the plane. When he confirms that the pilot has contacted Kookil to prepare for their arrival, he states that the woman has to be operated on within 4hrs 30 mins otherwise she would die. Meanwhile, Hye Jung is with the mobster boss who is grumbling about him being in the hospital and not knowing why he’s there. Hye Jung wonders how someone who lives on bothering others can whine so much and when the boss asks her if she wants him to die from his head exploding in anger, Hye Jung smiles as she explains to him the many risks that the surgery she’d performed entails, starting with paralysis and speech impediments and states that him whining means he’s okay. The mobster boss then tells her thank you and at first Hye Jung pretends not to hear him and gets him to repeat, wheedling him that with how atrociously he’d acted the previous night, she’s earned it. As she leaves his room, Kang Soo informs her that a patient is being flown to the helipad and one of their doctors who had attended to her wants a fellow to wait up at the roof. Hye Jung heads up with Young Kook who she grills on the patient’s information and symptoms. When she asks when the patient started to exhibit her symptoms, Young Kook doesn’t have an answer and tries to use his friendship with Seo Woo to get out of answering. Hye Jung calls him out on it immediately. Soon, the helicopter lands and the patient is wheeled out. Ji Hong steps out after her (looking snazzy with all the slow-motion and his fine fine self) but doesn’t immediately notice Hye Jung, although she spots him first. When he does notice her, he sends Young Kook off to get CT scans done for the patient and walks to Hye Jung who asks him how long the patient has been unconscious. Ji Hong responds that it’s been 4hrs and 45 minutes. Hye Jung then asks him how he’s been and Ji Hong responds by asking her if she’s married yet. Hye Jung tells him she isn’t and he asks her if she has a boyfriend. When she tells him no to that question as well, he says they’re set then and walks away with a smirk (Ha. Cute. Hye Jung won’t know what hit her).
5. Ji Hong makes his arrival with a big splash
After checking the patient’s CT scan, Young Kook and Hye Jung assume that Ji Hong will be performing a navigated aspiration but Ji Hong tells them that he will be doing the aspiration free hand because preparing the navigation equipment will take at least an hour and that extended time would definitely see the patient dead. Hye Jung exclaims that it’s too dangerous but Ji Hong says that’s why he’s doing it (oooh. Our man now thrives on danger. Smoking hot). While they scrub up for surgery, Ji Hong tries to catch up with Hye Jung about her position and her life but Hye Jung being Hye Jung won’t disclose anything. When Ji Hong brings up the fact that he’d searched for her every time he’d come to Korea, Hye Jung brings up In Joo surprising Ji Hong. Ji Hong is even more surprised when Hye Jung states that he married Hye Jung, and asks her who told her that. Young Kook on the other hand hurries to call Seo Woo but catches the attention of Tae Ho who is now the head of the neurosurgery department. When a scandalized Young Kook mentions Ji Hong’s daring surgery, Tae Ho just smiles and asks which operating room Ji Hong’s using and Seo Woo and Young Kook head there and are joined by Kyung Joon and later Kang Soo and all four of them look down on the surgery. Whilst Kyung Joon and Kang Soo worry about Ji Hong making a slip-up, Seo Woo is confident that with how long it took for the patient to get the surgery, she’s already dead on arrival (well, looks like she also picked up her bedside manners form her dad). Except, her confidence takes a nosedive when the surgery’s a proclaimed success. While Kang Soo and Kyung Joon clap at how talented Ji Hong is and Kyung Joon says that women must be lining up to marry Ji Hong with how talented he is, Young Kook says that Ji Hong’s married to his school sweetheart. But, Tae Ho interrupts that Ji Hong isn’t married and they should stop with the assumptions. When Young Kook wonders at how close Ji Hong and Hye Jung seem and asks if Seo Woo knows them as well, Seo Woo doesn’t answer. Down in the operating room, Hye Jung sasses Ji Hong when he doesn’t trust her skills in closing up the patient and he leaves her to it. He does come back soon though, after greeting Tae Ho, and he and Hye Jung banter about how cheesy’s he’s become (hahahaha). Outside the room, Ji Hong tries fishing for information about Soo Chul but Ji Hong points out to the fact that he should remember that his marriage vows to Ji Hong are sacred. She walks off though without hearing as he wonders why she’s so insistent on marrying him off.
6. Myung Ho’s greed has increased
Myung Ho walks into the hospital lobby followed by an entourage whilst everyone bows and give him the royal treatment. Sung Jong greets him and follows him up the elevator where Myung Ho asks if Sung Jong has secured votes from the directors on the board for their meeting. Sung Jong informs him that half the votes have been secured but Myung Ho shouldn’t be so certain because people can always change their mind, take for instance Chairman Hong who is now according to Sung Jong, treating Myung Ho horribly. Myung Ho angrily states that he used to respect Chairman Hong but now he’s preparing for the chairman’s impeachment. Sung Jong suggests that he works quickly as people trust Chairman Hong more than they trust the Jins and states that his fears are that they’re trying to oust him by attacking Myung Ho. When Myung Ho wonders what fault they can find in him considering that Kookil has been enjoying huge profits (you’re a hospital you moron. Should you be focused on profits or saving lives?) since he took control, Sung Joon points to the Senior Citizens Health Center and the fact that people think the Jins are trying to turn Kookil into a family run business. Myung Ho figures that everyone will understand his side when they see that all the profits in the future will come from senior citizens. Myung Ho then makes his presentation at the director’s meeting and although Chairman Hong praises Myung Ho’s passion, he wonders why they should build yet another clinic for the elderly and a VVIP one at that. When Sung Joon explains that it’s to make profits Tae Ho interrupts to state that creating a center just because of profits is something only business men would do and Chairman Hong agrees. When Myung Ho tries to insist that they need the money so they don’t fall into bankruptcy (doubt if things are that bad Myung Ho), Chairman Hong tells him not to exaggerate and states that they can always cut the budget of the burn center and use it to augment what they need, stating that it isn’t right to cut off a unit just because it isn’t profitable. He reminds the room that they’re all physicians and the minute they lose their integrity, it’s simply best to shut down the hospital doors. When the matter is brought to a vote, the directors vote no to the senior center and Myung Ho seethes when he’s in the privacy of his office with his father, stating that Chairman Hong needs to be ousted as he doesn’t understand the business side of doing things. Sung Jong is impressed though at Myung Ho’s business acumen and Myung Ho mutters as to why he always prefers the doctors who went to third rate schools over those who went to top schools because the former have been trampled by life and know how to survive and the latter have been coddled (dude, you know you sent your daughter to a top school right?). Myung Ho reiterates that the Chairman Hong has to go and Sung Jong agrees although he says it won’t be easy now that Ji Hong too has joined the hospital team. Ji Hong and Chairman Hong are totally unaware of the conversation as Chairman Hong shows Ji Hong the land that would house an organ transplantation center to prolong the quality of life of the citizens. He tells Ji Hong that Myung Ho had wanted to build a geriatric center there and concludes that Myung Ho might know business, but he’s tacky. The father and son laugh as they stare at the view.
7. The conference
As promised, Yoon Do holds a conference to probe into Hye Jung’s surgery. Immediately after the details of the surgery are reeled out, Yoon Do starts to toss out rapid-fire questions at Hye Jung, wondering why the surgery was rushed when the patient is young and with a stable mental state. Without waiting for her to speak, he asks yet another question as to why she didn’t wait and observe his condition when the patient regained consciousness after his convulsions. Hye Jung replies, calm as you please and utterly knowledgable that the moments of lucidity were just intervals and when the patient fell into stupor, she decided to operate. Yoon Do fires back at her that the patient’s hematoma according to the CT scan shouldn’t have affected his mental state and so it must have been a misdiagnosis. When Hye Jung states that it wasn’t a mis-diagnosis, Yoon Do fires back that she should have consulted the scans then to find out the true cause of the stupor. Hye Jung, tired of it all states that she found the cause of the hemorrhage during surgery and extracted the hematoma. She turns to look at Yoon Do to remind him that the operating field is a surgeon’s discretionary domain and that if he continues to be suspicious then she can’t reveal the details behind her decision. The words shock Yoon Do, impress Ji Hong who’s been watching the proceedings from the back of the hall, and leave Seo Woo looking jealous and miserable (sorry girl, but I don’t feel sorry for you). Tae Ho rises, and supports Hye Jung claim reminding the surgeons listening in that if they don’t respect their boundaries, no one else will. That concluded, he calls on Ji Hong to introduce him to everyone gathered and mentions to Ji Hong and Yoon Do that they get to choose between Hye Jung and Seo Woo who would assist them. He also tells Hye Jung and Seo Woo that they can start to score brownie points with whichever of the two professors (Ji Hong, Yoon Do), they want to work under, whilst Yoon Do and Ji Hong stare at Hye Jung (okay then. This is going to be interesting). Outside the conference room, Seo Woo meets with Ji Hong who is delighted to see her and is proud that both his students became neurosurgeons. When Seo Woo talks about liking his paper on neurosurgery, Tae Ho wonders if maybe Seo Woo is trying to lobby to work under Ji Hong and Ji Hong tells her that she can just ask if she wants to work with him. Seo Woo states that she has a lot to learn from Yoon Do, although she speaks politely because she remembers Myung Ho telling her that she should maintain a cordial relationship with Ji Hong because he has something he’s planning with Ji Hong in mind.
8. The apology
Hye Jung’s walks down the hospital hallway is interrupted by Kang Soo who wonders which of the two professors she wants to be trained by first. Hye Jung figures that she’ll just let them decide and Kang Soo looking utterly in awe of her tells her that she’s cool. Hye Jung smiles as she tells him that she remembers saying words like that to her teacher back in school. Their moment is interrupted by Yoon Do who shows up with Kyung Joon in tow. The two residents excuse them although they peep from the corner to eavesdrop. Hye Jung smiling states that she hopes Yoon Do still doesn’t think she made the wrong decision. Yoon Do answers that he didn’t see the operation field himself and so he can’t apologize (seriously dude? Going back on your word huh?). Hye Jung tells him that he’s not as difficult like she’d assumed he would be and tells him that him being persistent the way he is makes him look childish. When Yoon Do begs her pardon, Hye Jung tells him that even if he didn’t see the surgery, he should still learn to trust to trust others because what he just did made him look lame (you go girl! Tell him). She makes to leave but Yoon Do stops her by asking who she is and if she think she’s some gangster and can be rude to him. Hye Jung replies that she gives back what she gets and is rude to him because he was rude to her first. Yoon Do then walks up to her to apologize but warns her that he too gives back what he gets (yikes. Why do I fear that he will purposefully get her attached to him as an assistant so he can haze her or something. He seems that petty).
9. The Jins think the world revolves around them.
Seo Woo meets with Tae Ho to ask why he recruited Hye Jung considering the kind of school she graduated from. Tae Ho stops her in her tracks and reminds her that her father graduated from a school outside of Seoul and is now running the hospital (thank you for saying that on behalf of all of us Tae Ho). Tae Ho states that when they hire fellows, they look at their skills as doctors and Hye Jung is a good fit. Seo Woo points that Hye Jung must have an ulterior motive for coming to Kookil considering that she had a good job at another hospital and Tae Ho agrees that he’s curious as he too wonders why Hye Jung came with him considering the fact that Hye Jung was already a staff member at the other hospital, plus she’s earning less at Kookil. She asks if it’s because of Ji Hong and then goes on this tale of her not being able to go into details because it’s Hye Jung’s personal matter (girl, then you shouldn’t have brought it up in the first place). She then suggests that Tae Ho let Hye Jung go for the good of the department. Tae Ho isn’t buying it though and asks Seo Woo if she’s intimidated by Hye Jung because the girl from a low class family and a third rate college is at the same position as her. Tae Ho tells Seo Woo to relax though because people can’t grow alone and Seo Woo has a family of doctors. He tells Seo Woo that Hye Jung will be good competition for her seeing that a professor spot will open in the next year and only one of them can have the position. Seo Woo promises to prove that he’s made a mistake by making Hye Jung her competition and makes to leave but Tae Ho stops her by informing her that saying that there are private matters she can’t talk about is more of a personal attack than actually talking about the private matter. He looks at her as he says he didn’t know Seo Woo had that side to her. Hye Jung meanwhile tries but fails to access Mal Soon’s medical records and even the hospital administrator can’t help out because it’s high security information. As she walks away, lost in thoughts, she runs into Myung Ho who doesn’t recognize her and instead jokes with her as she calls her interesting. When he learns that she went to a provincial, school, he’s impressed and calls Kookil hospital a place of great opportunities for doctors like herself.
10. Hye Jung’s still badass and Ji Hong is too
Ji Hong spots Kang Soo who he asks for Hye Jung’s number from. Kang Soo is ever willing to hand it over and when Ji Hong tells him that he likes him, Kang Soo states that he knows everything about Hye Jung too. The words has Ji Hong smiling (hahahahaha. He looks like he’s about to milk Kang Soo for everything he knows about Hye Jung). Hye Jung though is at the ring, throwing punches as she remembers Myung Ho’s words from the past. Ji Hong meanwhile is at home, making dinner for his father who complains about the house being too quiet with just the two of them and wonders why Ji Hong didn’t marry In Joo. Ji Hong flashes back to the past when In Joo had called him immoral for saying that it won’t work between them after she’d tried so hard (girl, your dictionary must be out of this world because immoral doesn’t mean what you think it means). She calls out that she knows exactly who it is that Ji Hong likes and wonders if she should say the name. Ji Hong is at the moment thinking of the woman and he calls her. Soon we see him walking into the gym where Hye Jung’s at as he clumsily joins in the ring, stating that he heard that she still beats up people. When Hye Jung wonders why he wanted to see her when they see other at the hospital, Ji Hong answers that he had something to get off his chest and asks her why she keeps making him a married man. Hye Jung replies that it was his choice to be a married man to which Ji Hong tells her to stop listening to rumors as he’s not married. Hye Jung’s surprised but tries to leave and when Ji Hong tries to stop her, she twists him into a hold and Ji Hong twists right back to free himself and put her into a hold. Whilst he has her restrained, he laughs as he tells her that after she’d beaten him, he’d made up his mind to never get beaten by her again. Soon they’re fighting and when Hye Jung has him in a lock, Ji Hong flips her off and then he’s poised over, both of them looking at each other and then Ji Hong’s eyes slide down to her lips (Oh la la. That look….. 😉 and Hye Jung tells us that the unresolved past always finds you again, whether love or hatred.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Not Tae Ho, he’s awesome. But Seo Woo because 13 years later and she’s still the bratty girl trying to stir up trouble by twisting her words and and spewing her poison. I doubt if a bitchslap would be enough to snap her back into acting like an adult but, I can try.
Headache inducing moment:
None at all. And I’m positively thrilled considering yesterday’s episode and Mal Soon’s death. We’ll miss you Mal Soon.
This episode’s a Citrus Sparkler Cocktail. It’s nice and sweet and cute and even Seo Woo is not enough to get us down from the high that is Hye Jung, beautiful and successful with her car and her style and her swag and her brilliant brilliant mind.
