It turns out that a son’s love for his mother can have him trying to cover up for her, by any means necessary. Joon Soo’s suspicions continue to rise and he’s just a test away from having them confirmed. Dan Tae finally learns that Joon Soo was at the arboretum. Gong Mi remains annoying and Gong Shim is awesomely and patiently waiting for her happy ending.
Top 10 Moments:
- Joon Soo tries to fish for information
Dan Tae and Gong Shim head back home, with both of them smiling at the remembered memory of Gong Shim touching Dan Tae’s hand when she’d thought he was asleep. When they get to outside the convenience store and their apartment, they praise each other’s dancing and singing skills, unaware that Joon Soo’s watching their moment with a not so happy expression, from Dan Tae’s rooftop apartment’s vantage point. Gong Shim heads in first, and Dan Tae climbs the remaining steps to his apartment where he comes face to face with Joon Soo who claims to be there for just a visit. Dan Tae leads him in and leaves to get drinks for him, giving Joon Soo the opportunity to snoop as he goes back to look at the notation on the calendar and the family picture of Dan Tae’s adopted parents. When Dan Tae comes back in, drinks in hand, they settle in and Joon Soo uses the opportunity to bring up the question about Dan Tae’s parents and why he doesn’t live with them. Dan Tae explains that his mother died whilst he was in high school and his father lives in Philippines. At the explanation, Joon Soo sighs, although his eyes wander back to the calendar, making Dan Tae to turn around and spot what it is that Joon Soo’s staring at. Dan Tae turns back to look at Joon Soo as he asks him why he’d been drinking alone that night. When he asks if anything’s wrong, Joon Soo denies there being any problems. Dan Tae then assumes that Joon Soo must be going through a lot, what with his personal business and all. Joon Soo immediately jumps on that idea and soon Dan Tae’s offering his services to help Joon Soo run any errands should Joon Soo need his help in any way or form. Joon Soo smiles, but then his smile shifts as he brings up the search for Joon Pyo and asks Dan Tae how the search is coming along. When Dan Tae answers that there’s been no progress, Joon Soo brings up the fact that Dan Tae had said the person with the missing badge is the suspect. When he asks Dan Tae if there’s anyone he suspects, Dan Tae replies that there isn’t. Joon Soo then brings up the spam message, pointing out that it must have been a way to fish out the suspect considering that it was only the executives that got it, and the missing badge is issued to only executives. When Dan Tae feigns ignorance about the text, Joon Soo smiles as he states that that’s probably because Dan Tae isn’t an executive and couldn’t have gotten the spam message. He concludes that the text then has nothing to do with the search for Joon Pyo and Dan Tae agrees. Joon Soo then spills part of his drink and has to go wash his hands in the bathroom, whilst there, he notices Dan Tae’s toothbrush and figures that all he needs is genetic testing to prove whether or not Dan Tae is Joon Pyo (don’t even think about it Joon Soo. That’s in itself an invasion of privacy).
2. Joon Soo’s mother reports back to Dae Chul
Joon Soo’s mother meets with Dae Chul to show him the note and to wonder who wrote it (um, so I’m guessing either Joon Soo changed his handwriting, or you mother dearest haven’t seen your son’s handwriting in a long while). Dae Chul can’t figure it out either and Joon Soo’s mother wonders if maybe Ahn Soo Yong set it all up to extort money from them (yeah. Because just like Joon Pyo’s mother survived the car knocking her down, Ahn Soo Yong just picked up after your brother pushed him and he hit his head on a bench. Oh, and let’s not forget that your brother ran away without calling the medics). Dae Chul shuts it down and when Joon Soo’s mother brings up Dan Tae, Dae Chul points out that there’s no way Dan Tae would be aware of what has happened to his father, and stay quiet. Joon Soo’s mother though, isn’t comfortable with Dan Tae still being around and Dae Chul tells her not to worried that he will get rid of Dan Tae (and if you want to tell me mother dearest, that you’re not just a tad bit worried that your brother is being all creepy and threatening, then you’re every bit as bad and every bit as responsible for whatever his actions turn out to be).
3. Gong Mi’s still annoyingly hooked on the idea of dating Joon Soo
Whilst Dan Tae is trying his damnedest to be Gong Mi’s secret helper, he gets to the bus stop and spots a poster about an art exhibition that he’s sure Gong Shim would love. Gong Shim on the other hand is at home, serving her family the food she’d bought with the money she’d been paid by the Sashimi restauranteur when Joon Soo calls, holding on to an exhibition ticket and asking if she’s free that night (wait, why does that ticket look like tickets to the exhibition Dan Tae had said Gong Shim would be sure to like?). Gong Mi who’d spotted the caller ID of the person calling Gong Shim stares intently at her whilst Gong Shim has her conversation and when Gong Shim is done, she comes sidling up to Gong Shim’s room to comment about her not knowing that Gong Shim’s still close to Joon Soo (girl, shut the fuck up and get out of her room). When she asks if Gong Shim still sees Joon Soo, Gong Shim answers that they see each other from time to time. Gong Mi then brings up the phone conversation which Gong Shim claims is no big deal, Joon Soo had merely invited her out is all but she can’t make it because she has to work (please tell me it’s not going to be another stealing Gong Shim’s workshop spot for you Gong Mi. Because there’s no way you would appreciate the exhibit as much as Gong Shim would).
4. Dan Tae comes home
Dan Tae’s hard at work at the office when Grandmother calls, and calls him Joon Pyo at that. Dan Tae drops his voice as he responds by calling her ‘Grandmother’ (awwww), but reminds her about the whole keeping the fact that he’s Joon Pyo a secret. Grandmother then asks him to come home, to the house, seeing that it’s his home anyway, and nothing’s changed and it might just be what’s needed to jog his memory. And sure enough, even as Dan Tae’s telling himself that it took him 26 years to return home, he sees memories of his childhood self, playing on the grounds with a bunch of balloons in hand. As he smiles at the sight, he hears a voice, and by the time he turns around, it’s his mother running out to play with childhood him (awwww. That’s so sad. This is what greed took from him. His childhood, his home, his mother and his memories. I can never forgive you for this Dae Chul. I can never forgive you either Joon Soo’s mother). As he watches the scene unfold and fade away, Dan Tae with smiles in his eyes, tells us that he remembers. Except, all he remembers is that scene and he shares the memory with Grandmother who tears up as she confirms that as a child he indeed loved to play in the yard and his mother and father were fond of joining him in his play (awww. He can’t even remember his father yet. That’s so sad). Grandmother though is happy that Dan Tae’s memories have started to return and that he remembers his mother’s smile. She tells him not to worry as soon he will remember everything including how he got kidnapped (oh, nice. That might be a way to reveal the mystery. Dan Tae might just remember Dae Chul nabbing him, instead of this whole, the person who left the badge is the kidnapper business). Whilst in the house, Dan Tae runs into Joon Soo’s grandmother who wonders who he is. By the time he introduces himself, she’s delighted to meet him and goes on and on about his looks whilst Dan Tae compliments her beauty (hahaha. This two are a delight to watch). Joon Soo’s mother appears with a colder air though as she suspiciously wonders why Dan Tae was in Grandmother’s room. When Dan Tae explains that Grandmother wants him to sort through her personal documents for the past 10 years, meaning he will be coming to the house quite regularly, she doesn’t look a whit happy (a pity I don’t care about how uncomfortably it makes you woman. Plus, all that bluster and cold front of yours had better be prepared to melt into nothingness because Dan Tae will soon return as Joon Pyo and no matter how much you all panic, you can’t stop it. I just hope your brother at least, gets jail time).
5. Dan Tae’s secret santa ploy comes back to bite him in the ass & Joon’s learns Dae Chul stole his bag
Dan Tae ends up getting his set of tickets for the exhibition and because he’s still on his, I shall not let Gong Shim know that I like her or that I’m helping her phase, he passes the tickets over to Goo Nam, telling him to hand it to Gong Shim but not to tell her that he is the one that gave it to him. When Goo Nam wonders why Dan Tae can’t just give it to her himself (trust me Goo Nam. I’m wondering the same thing as well), Dan Tae launch into a daydream of Gong Shim cozying up to him as she invites him for the exhibition and tells him that he will buy them drinks after. He smiles at the daydream then shakes it off as he barks at Goo Nam to just do it. So, when Goo Nam runs into Gong Shim, he hands her the tickets without telling her who it was that handed it over to him. Gong Shim though, convinces herself that it’s Joon Soo, as she remembers the call he’d placed and how he’d said he had something to give her. She walks away happy. Meanwhile Joon Soo’s at the office thinking back on Dan Tae’s words about the badge stealer being Joon Pyo’s kidnapper and how Dae Chul had seemed particularly interested in the car he was taking for the seminar on the day his bag, jacket and badge had gotten stolen. Unaware that Joon Soo’s piecing things together, Dae Chul goes through Joon Soo’s bag and is surprised and impressed to see that Joon Soo’s planning on starting his own business. He tosses the bag into a waste basket and covers it with thrash just as Joon Soo’s father comes in to remind him about their lunch plans. They run into Joon Soo on their way and invite him to join them but Joon Soo turns them down. Instead, he heads to Dae Chul’s office to search the place but doesn’t notice the trashcan or the bag that hidden in it. He heads to the bathroom where he sees Dan Tae brushing his teeth and takes particular interest in Dan Tae’s toothbrush (so I guess we’re going with the, ‘I shall test for DNA’ then). Dan Tae asks him if anything’s wrong but Joon Soo just brushes off the question and says nothing’s wrong, although he also notes where Dan Tae stores the brush in his drawer. Dan Tae gets called in by the cleaning crew who’d found Joon Soo’s bag in Dae Chul’s thrash. They ask him to take it back to the office as they don’t want to get into trouble for accidentally taking the bag and Dan Tae conveniently runs into Joon Soo on his way there. Joon Soo’s surprised to see Dan Tae with his bag but masks his surprise, although he’s not quite able to contain it when Dan Tae informs him that the bag belongs to Dae Chul. He offers to take the bag to Dae Chul, and Dan Tae, not suspecting anything allows it.
6. Joon Soo hears the truth from Dae Chul
Dae Chul gets back to his office and is alarmed to find Joon Soo’s bag missing. He’s even more alarmed when Joon Soo walks in, bag in hand to ask if he was looking for the bag. He drops the bag in front of Dae Chul who hastens to try and explain. Joon Soo cuts to the quick though and tells him that he’s the one who’d sent his mother the note to escape the arboretum because had she even delayed three minutes, she would have been spotted by Dan Tae who Grandmother had hired to look for Joon Pyo. Dae Chul is shocked and Joon Soo continues that had she stayed, then Dan Tae would have figured out that they’re the ones behind Joon Pyo’s kidnapping, so Dae Chul shouldn’t bother attempting to lie or make excuses (wait, so you know they’re behind it and are what? Trying to protect them or something). He tells Dae Chul to tell him the honest truth, had him and his mother connived to kidnap Joon Pyo 25 years prior? Dae Chul sighs as he replies that yes, they had. He goes on to explain that the plan hadn’t been to kidnap Joon Pyo permanently, but he’d taken him so he could hustle the family for money to pay off his debtors and things had gotten bad when his friend had lost the child (ha. So I guess we’re leaving out the part where you were talking to someone on the phone about getting rid of Joon Pyo huh?). When Joon Soo asks him if he knows where Joon Pyo is at the moment, Dae Chul answers that he has no idea where Joon Pyo is at. Joon Soo then asks about his mother’s role in the debacle and Dae Chul explains that she had nothing to do with it, except she saw him take Joon Pyo and didn’t report him to the police when it all went down (methinks it still makes her an accessory though). Joon Soo then tells Dae Chul that although he’s not ready to forgive him or his mother for what they’ve done, he fully intends to protect his mother and even lie and deceive others in order to achieve it.
7. Dan Tae’s suspicions are raised
Dan Tae’s at the office when one of the secretaries, that Joon Soo’s father, fondly calls the grim reaper comes with a speeding ticket in hand as she demands that he pay it. Turns out Dan Tae had been captured by security cameras on the day he’d been speeding to get to the arboretum on time for the meet. Dan Tae though doesn’t think much of it until the day he visits Grandmother again in the house and she’d showed him a box of the toys he’d played with as a child, hoping to spark his memory. The items hadn’t brought Dan Tae’s memory back although he makes another discovery in the form of Joon Soo’s own speeding ticket to the arboretum which Joon Soo’s grandmother comments on when she walks in, complaining about what on earth Joon Soo was doing there in the first place. When she takes the speeding ticket along with her to Joon Soo’s room, Dan Tae finds an excuse to go meet her there and when he gets her to leave the room for a moment, under the guise of her getting gaming cards so they can play a game, Dan Tae checks out the speeding ticket himself and takes note of the fact that hi and Joon Soo’s car were about captured at the same location, close to the arboretum. Dan Tae wonders what Joon Soo was doing there that day.
8. Joon Soo takes Gong Shim on Dan Tae’s date
Gong Shim meets up with Joon Soo who’s thrilled to see her. Just as he’s about to bring out his tickets, Gong Shim brings hers out and thanks him for getting her the tickets. Joon Soo, aware that they’re definitely not his, looks like he’s about to admit the truth when Gong Shim tells him about how she figures that he would take the opportunity to relax. And just like that, Joon Soo decides to go with Gong Shim to the exhibition, although he’s not as comfortable watching Gong Shim walk around the pieces. When she smiles at him though, he makes himself smile back and he listens intently as she points out her favorite pieces to him. But his not so swell mood isn’t hidden so well and when Gong Shim finally gets him to smile, she smiles at the sight and points out that that’s the first time he was smiling that day. She also points to the quotation on the wall, stating that one can’t live without knowing what happiness means and says she figures the writer means that they should just enjoy life. After seeing the exhibition, Gong Shim and Joon Soo go out to get a bite to eat. As they bite into their burgers, Gong Shim thanks Joon Soo for taking her to the exhibition as she’d really wanted to go with him. The words bring Joon Soo down yet again and Gong Shim asks him if he’s alright. Joon Soo though still doesn’t tell her anything and soon it’s nighttime and Joon Soo takes Gong Shim home. Just as they get there, Gong Shim spots Dan Tae waiting and points him out to Joon Soo. Seeing Dan Tae has Joon Soo admitting to Gong Shim that the exhibition tickets she had weren’t from him. He pulls out his tickets to show Gong Shim and explains that he didn’t even have the chance to give her the one he’d gotten. He also adds that he thinks the tickets were from Dan Tae. He then leaves the car to go apologize to Dan Tae in private, explaining to Dan Tae that he and Gong Shim are just getting back from the exhibition and they’d seen it using Dan Tae’s tickets. He admits to being jealous that Dan Tae had beaten him to asking Gong Shim first and that Gong Shim had thought that the tickets were from him and not Dan Tae. But he also adds that although he’s sorry, he doesn’t regret it because that’s how strong his feelings for Gong Shim are (well, that’s a lame ass apology).
9. Dan Tae finally stops being an idiot… or not
Dan Tae walks away from Joon Soo and runs into Gong Shim who’s been waiting for him. She repeats Joon Soo’s words almost ad verbatim saying that she’d gone to see the exhibition with Dan Tae’s ticket. When Dan Tae makes to move on after only saying he’s heard, Gong Shim stops him to ask if that’s all he has to say to her, especially since if he’d just handed her the tickets directly, they could have avoided the misunderstanding. She brings up the heat patch Goo Nam had given her when she’d been in pain and correctly guesses that it was Dan Tae that had given it to him. When Dan Tae still stays mute, Gong Shim snaps as she asks him what’s wrong with him and tells him that if he’s going to act like that, he should just leave her alone as she will handle her feelings all on her own. She tells him that just because she smiles a lot, doesn’t mean it’s not hard for her. At her words, Dan Tae pulls her to him and hugs her (Ahhhhh. Finally. Never let go of her again Dan Tae). As he hugs her, Dan Tae apologizes for making it hard on her and for not being able to say anything and for the hug being the only thing he can do right at the moment (wait what? That’s it? You’re still going to maintain the distance? Drats!). The next morning, Gong Shim waits for Dan Tae on his way to work and tells him that she has three questions for him. The first being is he suffering from some sort of terminal illness that would have him dead soon (hahaha. Good for you for calling it out Gong Shim. Cuz I’m sure you will hiss when you find out his real reason). When he says no, she moves on to her second question: did his first love return or something (hahaha. I can’t even. At least the writer knows to poke fun at all the tropes. Hahahaha), and is he now busy comparing her to his first love. When Dan Tae also denies the idea, Gong Shim asks him whether he’s in debt and is being chased by loan sharks (hahahaha). Dan Tae’s shocked at the suggestion so Gong Shim’s relieved. She explains that she’d been worried about his words the previous night, about not being able to tell her why he’s acting the way he’s been acting and has decided that as long as his reasons have nothing to do with the three she’d listed out to him, then she’s fine with waiting for him till he’s resolved all he has to resolve (awwww. You’re a good girlfriend Gong Shim). Gong Shim is quick to point out that though that she’s not an easy woman, and even though she might have portrayed herself in that light what with him having rejected her before and her telling him straightforwardly now that she still likes him, she is still not an easy woman. Dan Tae can only smile at her, even as Gong Shim makes sure to point out to him that soon she’ll get a job, stop worrying and her bald spot will grow in. She then makes to leave but trips over her own feet and falls flat on her face (ouch. Also, Dan Tae, what happened to your super fast reflexes? Why didn’t you catch her before she fell). She jumps to her feet, embarrassed as she covers her face with her hair and runs away. Dan Tae watches her leave with a big smile.
10. Dan Tae and Joon Soo both make discoveries
Dan Tae’s at the hospital to check up on his father when his aunt soothes his worries about his father waking up by telling him that the doctors say there’s hope that Ahn Soo Yong will wake soon. She then mentions that she got a call from the arboretum asking them to come and collect Ahn Soo Yong’s luggage and Dan Tae volunteers to go. When he gets there, he shows the arboretum workers a picture of Joon Soo and asks them if they’ve seen Joon Soo around before. All of them deny having ever seen Joon Soo, until the old man who carries Ahn Soo Yong’s luggage into the room is shown the image and he identifies Joon Soo as a young man who had paid him a lot of money to hand a note to a woman waiting in the arboretum. Meanwhile, Joon Soo gets Dan Tae’s toothbrush from Dan Tae’s drawer and takes it for DNA testing at a lab that already has Grandmother registered with them. He asks for a DNA test to be conducted and fills the paperwork, under a false name. Back at the hospital, Joon Soo and Dan Tae run into each other, each with a hard look on his face (for your sake Dan Tae, I hope you’ve been suspicious of Joon Soo enough to have changed your toothbrush so the test would not declare you as Grandmother’s grandson and you can continue your investigation in peace. I also hope you put two and two together that the only woman Joon Soo will be so willing to put in so much effort to save is his mother. As for you Joon Soo, I have no idea what your motivations are anymore. I just know you seem to have forgotten telling Dan Tae that you hope he finds Joon Pyo so all of you can be happy. Because you sure don’t look happy at the good news).
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because this is the episode of Joon Soo’s idiocy. He got his mother away, lied to Gong Shim, and gave Dae Chul the idea that Dan Tae knows way more than he’s pretending not to, and all within an hour period. This guy is an absolute moron.
Headache inducing moment:
Because it was at this moment that I realized that Joon Soo will also contribute in trying to delay the inevitable. Which means for another 4 or 5 episodes, we have to do the song and dance of Dan Tae not knowing whodunnit.
This episode’s for the first time since I started watching Beautiful Gong Shim, a bland-tasting glass of Palm wine. It lacks the sweetness and richness of previous episodes and had me feeling frustrated because I know it can be good, and yet I’m so disappointed. Dan Tae, here’s hoping you get your memories back soon. Cuz from where I’m sitting, it would seem that’s the only way the truth would come out in this drama.
