Just a taste of how sweet a relationship with Gong Shim can be has Dan Tae looking at her with stars in his eyes even as he begs her sleeping self to wait for him. Joon Soo covers for his mother and prolongs the inevitable. Dan Tae’s still searching for the culprit but seems to have hit a brick wall. Grandmother we learn knows the truth and Dan Tae and Gong Shim are hopelessly in love even if they can’t be together just yet.
Top 10 Moments:
- Joon Soo saves his mother
We rewind to a few minutes before Joon Soo shows up at the arboretum when we see that Dae Chul who was meant to make the handover had run into a group of cyclists. He tries to get them to let him go and even offers to pay their hospital bills. The cyclists are insistent on him staying however, pointing out that should he leave, it would become a hit and run. Dae Chul had then called Joon Soo’s mother to head to the arboretum in his place, with the money in hand so that the person with the video won’t release it on the internet. It’s why she’s there and Joon Soo who had hurried over so he can see who it was that kidnapped his brother sees her (well technically, she did play a role in the kidnap of Joon Pyo, plus at some point, she and Dae Chul were in cahoots so she is technically one half of the kidnap team). Joon Soo, horrified, hurries away before his mother can see him and by the time Dan Tae gets to the meeting point, he doesn’t find anyone there. As we see Joon Soo’s mother drive away, we see that she’d received a note that claimed that direct dealing had been canceled and she should leave the scene immediately. Not knowing that the note came from Joon Soo, she flees and by the time Dan Tae shows up, there’s nobody there. He decides to hide in the shrubs to wait for the person and is there when Joon Soo who was creeping to escape, steps on a twig. Joon Soo though moves fast and is hidden by the time Dan Tae turns around (seriously show? He can’t have moved that fast. What is he the flash? Quicksilver? Sheesh). Frustrated at the no-show, Dan Tae leaves and Joon Soo is able to breathe a sigh of relief.
2. Joon Soo tries to deal with the revelation
Back at home, Joon Soo’s thoughts are soon consumed by what he’s seen. He goes to meet his mother who is feigning that she isn’t feeling too well and so couldn’t make it for their agreed date, and then heads out to a bar. He’s soon drunk and calls Gong Shim, to inform her that he’s drunk. She calls him back for his location and then tries to put him in a cab, when she gets there. Joon Soo though doesn’t want to go home yet and wants to instead take Gong Shim to her house. So, Gong Shim takes him to a park where Joon Soo falls asleep on her shoulder. Needing reinforcements, she calls Dan Tae to come help her. Dan Tae hurries over and although he pauses for just a little second when he sees Joon Soo with his head on Gong Shim’s shoulder, he soon walks over to the duo, where Gong Shim explains that Joon Soo had called her drunk and had become even more drunk by the time she’d gotten to the bar. As to what he’s doing with her in their neighborhood park, she explains to Dan Tae that Joon Soo had been insistent on taking her home and had fallen asleep the minute they got to the park. When Gong Shim asks Dan Tae for help in moving Joon Soo, Dan Tae piggybacks Joon Soo all the way to Dan Tae’s apartment which is where Joon Soo finds himself when he wakes up the next morning. He doesn’t feel any better about waking up in Dan Tae’s room however as he remembers seeing Dan Tae at the Arboretum (dude, I wonder how you’ll feel by the time you realize he’s Joon Pyo, who your mother and uncle connived to kidnap and whose mother died in the process). By the time he steps outside the house, Gong Shim’s waiting outside with a detox juice in hand and an offer for him to have some of the hangover soup she’s prepared. Joon Soo though leaves with a claim that he has somewhere else to be and Dan Tae mutters that he’s worried about him, even as he sucks on his ice-cream lolly (hahaha. I swear, Dan Tae just likes to eat).
3. Joon Soo figures it out
Back at the mansion, Grandmother leaves on her own to go talk to her dead son as it’s the memorial for his death. Left alone, Joon Soo’s grandmother expresses sympathy for Grandmother being lonely as she goes to visit her son alone, without her grandson in tow. At that moment, Joon Soo comes back home and even as his mother is berating him about sleeping out, his father’s reminds him that that day 20 years ago, Joon Pyo’s father had died in an accident (is it weird that I immediately thought maybe Dae Chul had something to do with it?). When his father tells him to go to the site as well and pay his respects, because the rest of them had already gone earlier in the day, Joon Soo remembers seeing a notation on Dan Tae’s calendar and asks for the name of the memorial hall. His father replies that it’s Hyuan Memorial Park and Joon Soo has an epiphany (seriously though Joon Soo. Joon Pyo’s father isn’t the only one buried there you know). Back in his room, he remembers seeing Dan Tae’s writing about visiting his father at Hyuan Memorial Park on the calendar in Dan Tae’s room that morning and he remembers when Dan Tae had told him that he too has an allergy to eggs and how Dan Tae had said they had a connection. Crying, he wonders if Dan Tae is Joon Pyo (logically, this doesn’t make that much sense. Joon Soo, an allergy to eggs and a visit to a memorial park does not a brother make. And please don’t tell me that you’re going to go all, Dan Tae approached my family on purpose because he knew. Spare us that drama. Please).
4. Dan Tae almost gets caught
Dan Tae’s heads to the memorial park just like he’d noted on his calendar and looks at his parents’ pictures. He particularly stares a long time at his smiling mother, trapped in the frame. Unknown to him however, Joon Soo’s decided to head to the site to see if he would be able to catch Dan Tae (wait, so for like the entire 24 hours, he chooses the time you decide to be there, to be there? Like there are way too much coincidences now). He’s just seconds away from spotting Dan Tae when Grandmother calls his name out in a loud voice. The minute Joon Soo turns to look at her, she clutches at her chest. Joon Soo runs straight to her to lead her out, and Dan Tae steps out to view their departing backs. Outside the hall, Joon Soo tries to get Grandmother to head to the hospital, but she tells him that she’s fine and it was just a dizzy spell. Joon Soo though insists that she should go see a doctor and Grandmother agrees, but also tells him to go in and visit his uncle. By the time he gets into the hall though, the place is empty.
5. Grandmother knows and she’s known for a while
Dan Tae meanwhile gets the royal bowing of heads treatment by members of staffs as he walks down a stairway and enters a room where Grandmother is there, greeting him as Joon Pyo when he calls her Grandmother (wait what? How long has she known? Are they in this together?). She tells him of how close a call it was that Joon Soo had almost seen him and Dan Tae replies that Joon Pyo didn’t find out the truth thanks to Grandmother’s acting skills (tell me about it. I thought the writers had just thrown that in to give Dan Tae a way for him to escape notice, not that Grandmother was the one giving Dan Tae his escape). Grandmother asks if he thinks Joon Soo’s in the know, Dan Tae tells her that he doesn’t think so (actually, he suspects already). When Grandmother asks how long they would have to keep meeting in hiding, Dan Tae replies that until she’s able to call him Joon Pyo, she should just call him Dan Tae (still doesn’t answer the question Dan Tae). Grandmother though doesn’t mind whether he’s Dan Tae or Joon Pyo, she’s just so happy and relieved to have found him again and tells Dan Tae that when he’d told her that he is Joon Pyo, she’d felt like she could die without regrets. We then flashback to 15 days prior, when Dan Tae came back from his 1 month disappearing act and had met Grandmother with DNA tests results matching him to her as her grandson. They’d had a tearful reunion then with both of them holding onto each other even as Grandmother had wailed that he’d been so close to her all along. We fast forward to a couple more days later (still in the past though, not the present) where we see Dan Tae telling Grandmother that no one can find out that he’s Joon Pyo until they’ve caught the suspect (and the suspect had better be getting jail time. I don’t want any of that, we’re family let’s forgive each other bullshit). Dan Tae had then told her that the suspect is someone working within Star Group and to investigate he would need to be able to work there and without restraint; so he’d requested to be her secretary. She’d agreed to move her current secretary to another branch and create the vacancy for Joon Pyo. Back in the present, Dan Tae explains that no one had shown up at the arboretum. Grandmother though doesn’t even care about catching the culprit and is just happy that her grandson is back (but you should care Grandmother. You should care and put them in jail so they don’t try to attack your grandson again). Dan Tae though wants to catch the guilty party as he reminds Grandmother that the person responsible had been the one to not just kidnap him, but had led to his mother’s death and had also put his father in a coma. He begs Grandmother to just wait a bit till he finds the person. Grandmother then asks if he has any good news to share and so Dan Tae tells her that there’s a girl he likes. Grandmother is excited to hear the news and asks Dan Tae to bring the girl over. Dan Tae though explains that with his identity crisis and everything going on with a father who might or might not die while in coma, he doesn’t want to tell this girl that he likes all his worries (what the… Seriously Dan Ta? Seriously? What BS are you feeding yourself now. Argh! Heavens save us from Kdrama heroes who are convinced that their women are too fragile to handle the truth). When Grandmother tells him that what if the girl misunderstands and leaves him, Dan Tae simply replies that that’s the one thing he scared of (then get off your ass and tell her the truth! Like sheesh! This man!).
6. Goofy Dan Tae is back (and how we’ve missed him)
Dan Tae gets back home, lost in thoughts when Gong Shim enters the room with a ticket to the movie: Odd Couple (fitting title) in her hands. She tells Dan Tae that the Nakji restaurant owner had offered her the soon to be expired tickets and so she was passing it on to him. Dan Tae though gives her the, I’m busy so I might not be able to come excuse and Gong Shim internally sighs as she realizes that he didn’t fall for the line. Not to be daunted though, she tells him to keep the ticket anyway and Dan Tae remembers when she’d told him that she can forge on with her feelings for him. And so, as the time for the movie draws nearer, Dan Tae returns to his happy goofy self as he considers that he has enough time to make it to the movie. Then he sits and wonders if something more would happen after the movies which would lead him to not being able to hide his feelings anymore (hahaha. Are you thinking of a post movie coffee break or a kiss there Dan Tae?). He then decides to stick the ticket in the middle of a random book and then shuffles all his books together, smiling as he tells himself that now he won’t be able to find the ticket (hahaha. Idiot. You so would find it soon). Except, when he hears Gong Shim’s voice, he panics and starts looking for the ticket (hahaha. Stupid Dan Tae). He finally steps out of his apartment to see Gong Shim watering her plants. She’s decided to give one of the plants to the Nakji restaurant owner and when Dan Tae helps her pick the one she should give out, he brings up the movie. Gong Shim immediately panics and goes on and on about him not needing to bother about it. When he tries once again to speak, she railroads him by saying he shouldn’t worry about it as she would just take it to mean that she failed for that day. As she leaves, Dan Tae brings out the ticket (a-ha. He’d wanted to invite her to see the movie with him. Drats Gong Shim and wanting to help Dan Tae save face) and says that he’s the one who’s failed.
7. Gong Shim takes care of the two most important men in her life
The next morning has Gong Shim waiting for Dan Tae to step out of the building. The minute he does, she asks him where he’s going. When he tells her that he’s going to get a hair cut, Gong Shim offers to come along, to which Dan Tae touches her wig. She answers that yes, she takes her wig to the salon but pouts when Dan Tae says he’s not going to the salon but to the barber. Cut to Dan Tae in a salon (hahaha) getting primped for his haircut. And then Gong Shim’s father plops into the seat beside him, saying that Gong Shim had recommended the salon to him because she’s such a good daughter. Then Gong Shim pops up in the space between the two of them (hahaha) to blink rapidly at Dan Tae and to give instructions to the stylist working on her father’s hair. Next she tells Dan Tae’s stylist how to cut Dan Tae’s hair and smiles when Dan Tae tells the stylist to follow everything Gong Shim had said. Dan Tae’s getting his hair shampooed when Gong Shim has to run off to help her mother with buying sheets. By the time Dan Tae comes back, she’s gone. Her father however tells him the good news that the Nakji restaurant owner had shown Gong Shim’s work to a Sashimi restaurant owner and the person had invited Gong Shim to the suburbs to come draw, for which he would pay her. Gong Shim’s father is thrilled at the news, as is Dan Tae. But her father mentions though that although he knows she will be traveling with a lot of baggage, neither he nor his wife would be able to drop her off because they have to go for a checkup the next day. Dan Tae immediately offers, waving aside Gong Shim’s father’s concern that Gong Shim had thought he would be too busy to drive her down and so hadn’t wanted to ask him.
8. Gong Shim and Dan Tae’s road trip
The next morning, Dan Tae’s waiting for Gong Shim as she comes down the stairs. She’s surprised to see him and even more surprised when Dan Tae tells her that her father had asked him to go with her on her trip. Of course he feigns that he’s only doing it because her father asked him too. Gong Shim however is so happy that he’s actually going on her trip with her, and that he brought one of the company cars as well. But, Gong Shim who’d stayed awake all night sketching is feeling very dizzy on the car ride, and no matter how much she wills herself not to lose this golden opportunity of being alone in a car with Dan Tae, she dozes off. Soon her head is lolling around and when Dan Tae tries to gently push her head so she can comfortably settle against the window, he pushes too hard and she slams into the window (hahahaha). When Gong Shim apologizes for being too tired, Dan Tae offers for them to stop at a rest area. When they’re about to leave, we see Dan Tae carrying the baggage of an elderly couple and putting the pile of bags into a car. Gong Shim smiles at the sweet act, but she’s not smiling for long when grandmother is so impressed by Dan Tae that she offers to hook him up with her youngest daughter (hahaha. Matchmaking grandmothers. Gotta love them). Gong Shim’s back to smiling again though when grandfather cuts grandmother off and tells her that it’s not right to say such a thing to a stranger. Her smile drops however when grandfather continues that their eldest daughter should go first and grandmother agrees, asking Dan Tae what he thinks about older women (hahahahaha). At this point, Gong Shim walks up to Dan Tae, puts her arms through his and calls him honey (hahaha. Dan Tae’s beagle eye stare at the unexpected act is hilarious). And with that move, she steers him away from the matchmakers, explainging to them that they have to be off, even as she pushes Dan Tae to the car.
9. Gong Mi’s still being delusional
Gong Mi meanwhile is in the office dreaming about Joon Soo asking her out to dinner and touching her on the arm when he pulled her away from being squished by the movers. She goes home to rant to her mother about how much Joon Soo and Joon Soo’s grandmother like her and how her mother ruined her chances by fighting with Joon Soo’s mother (firstly, your mother was justified. The woman had treated your sister like crap and if you aren’t such a little bitch, you wouldn’t even consider that as anything but justified. Secondly, his grandmother and mother loving doesn’t mean jack squat if he doesn’t like you. And guess what, he doesn’t like you. He prefers your more interesting sister). Her mother then acknowledges that although she might not be able to help Gong Mi out, she might be able to salvage some of the situation by going on her knees and begging Joon Soo’s mother. When she asks Gong Mi when the two families can meet (yeah Gong Mi. When can the two families meet so Joon Soo can see that your sister is Gong Shim? Or do you have plans to pay for her to travel out of the country indefinitely?), Gong Mi replies that she and Joon Soo haven’t reached that stage yet ( girl, both of you aren’t even anywhere close to a stage) and her mother snaps at her for making her mentally start going through the number of ways she’d have to beg Joon Soo’s mother.
10. Dan Tae gets his chance at playing the loving husband
By the time Gong Shim and Dan Tae get to the Sashimi restaurant, they’re surprised to see the harried restaurant owner (well hello there Dokku. Fancy seeing you here) whose wife wails at him for asking for recommendations from too many people who have all sent artists because of his request. When one of the artist wails that he and his friend had travelled all the way from Busan, the restauranteur decides to go with him. When the second one wails that he broke his leg that morning and still came all the way, the restauranteur decides to go with him instead. When the man turns to Gong Shim with an apologetic look on his face, Gong Shim looks like she’s just about to accept that she won’t get considered when Dan Tae’s fast mind moves and he immediately draws Gong Shim closer and calls her honey. He then starts to apologize to her for being a useless husband and now she must work hard to sustain them. When he promises that when he gets money, they would have a proper wedding, it seals the deal and soon enough they’re unpacking, Gong Shim is thanking Dan Tae for the help and she gets to work drawing on the restaurant walls. They end up having to wait a while for Gong Shim to paint the drawings because the restauranteur has a get together that can’t be disturbed. He doesn’t leave them out of it however as he drags them to the table and introduces them as the newly wedded couple from Seoul. Soon they’re dragged into the festivities and when the other restaurateurs promise to offer Gong Shim the job of doing their own murals if she and Dan Tae sing a song, they get up and start to sing and dance and have the most awesome time. After they’re done though, the restauranteurs suggest that they make cute little babies who would look just like them and they’re led to their room. By the time the restaurateur who had commissioned Gong Shim’s painting shows up, he apologizes as he says that they will have to continue the painting the next day because his guests are still around and he winks at Dan Tae to do the deed (hahahaha. They both look so uncomfortable, it’s hilarious). After an uncomfortable moment where everything Dan Tae says reads like a sexual innuendo, Dan Tae finally excuses himself from the room. By the time he gets back, Gong Shim’s asleep. He tucks her in and thanks her sleeping form for liking him and begs her to wait just a little bit longer for him. By the time he wakes up, Gong Shim’s already up and hard at work painting her drawings (awww, they’re so pretty). Dan Tae offers to help and soon they’re both smiling and painting. By the time they’re done, it looks pretty impressive and everyone thinks so too. Gong Shim has Dan Tae take a picture of her beside the wall and then the restauranteur nudges her and Dan Tae to take a picture together. When he completes about them being too stiff, Dan Tae pulls Gong Shim to him at the very last moment.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
No one in this episode. Although Joon Soo came really really close. But it wasn’t enough for me to want to bitchslap him. So, he’s safe.
Headache inducing moment:
Because of course Joon Soo will want to protect his mother which will of course prolong the whodunit aspect of the drama. Argh! 7 more episodes before everything is revealed and we have to wait patiently whilst Dae Chul continues to think he’s gotten away with it and Joon Soo’s mother can keep kidding herself that she wasn’t somehow the a participant in her sister-in-law’s death. Argh!
This episode’s an old fashioned, not for everyone’s taste and has quite the not so pleasant start. But keep chugging and you get to the beautiful sweet finish with the cute honey acting of Gong Shim and Dan Tae that has us anxious for when the two of them can become honeys’ for real.
