Some baddies deserve the slowly take them apart treatment. Gil Do’s one of those and the show doesn’t disappoint. Dokku comes to the rescue several times over and is solidly on the sides of our kids. Alliances get reshuffled and rearranged and the pressure finally has Gil Do snapping as the monster emerges.
Top 10 Moments:
- Dokku to the rescue and Moo Myeong challenges Gil Do
Just as Tae Ha’s about to be stabbed, Dokku comes to the rescue and jumps into the fray (Yay Dokku! Thank heavens you haven’t left town yet). After punching out the last of the assailants, Dokku has Tae Ha take Yeo Kyung to the hospital whilst he waits behind to clean up the mess. The prisoner: Gil Sung recognizes Dokku and asks what he’s doing around. Dokku gives the man a word of advise: stay out of the mess. When Gil Sung explains that he has to see things through, Dokku hands him money and tells him that there are way too many prosecutors and congressmen involved in the mess and there would be no way out if Gil Sung doesn’t get out of the whole situation immediately. Meanwhile, in Goongnakwon, Gil Do files away the picture to be examined later and instead turns to Moo Myeong who has come to visit him. He sits Moo Myeong down and asks him what his intentions are towards Da Hae because it would seem that Da Hae favors Moo Myeong. When Moo Myeong asks if Gil Do is asking out of concern as an advisor or as her father, Gil Do is surprised that Moo Myeong knows that. Moo Myeong though replies that it’s basically an open secret and Gil Do gives the command that Moo Myeong should stop influencing Da Hae and stay away from her (well you know what Gil Do… That might be kind of hard. Because your daughter is drawn to the truth about you and Moo Myeong has a whole lot of answers). Moo Myeong puts him in his place by saying that if Gil Do is speaking as an advisor, he can’t stay away from Da Hae because she’s going to run Goongnakwon one day and Moo Myeong has every intention of helping her, but if Gil Do is speaking as a father, he doesn’t believe Gil Do has the right to make that statement. Moo Myeong then tells Gil Do why he’s there to see him: he wants Gil Do to empty the office in three days, as it’s the office of the Master of Noodles not Goongnakwon’s advisor (ooooh. That’s gotta hurt). He also adds that he doesn’t want Goongnakwon’s kitchen getting involved in politics so he wants Gil Do to stay out of there as well. Gil Do scoffs that Moo Myeong is acting like he’s got the world in his palms and Moo Myeong replies that technically he does, considering the fact that he won the position fair and square and is now here to claim the trophy: Gil Do. Gil Do’s eyes narrow and then he pulls out Tae Ha’s wallet, plus the picture of the orphanage children as he tells Moo Myeong that there’s another name he wants to claim and in doing so, he’s not interested in winning any trophies, just smashing everything up. Moo Myeong doesn’t blink, although he’s clearly affected by the image and he just cooly tells Gil Do to clear out his things in three days (talk about pure awesomeness).
2. Tae Ha gives Moo Myeong the heads-up
Yeo Kyung finally comes to, and she’s raring to go, convinced that she has to show everyone what happens when they mess with a prosecutor. Tae Ha is all concerned for her health but Yeo Kyung doesn’t care about Gil Do sending any more people because she believes that she has Tae Ha to keep her safe. Outside Yeo Kyung’s hospital room, Tae Ha runs into Dokku who checks with him to see that he’s alright as well. Dokku also confirms to Tae Ha that Gil Do had given his father drugs and a knife and basically told him to have at it and go commit murder. Telling the story, he warns Tae Ha to stay away from Gil Do as that’s the kind of man he is; someone who uses and discards people. Tae Ha though believes he still has to remain at Goongnakwon because other than his friends, he has someone else to protect (awwww. Da Hae). Gil Sung and his boys take Dokku’s words to heart and leave the whole mess behind, and so they refuse to answer any of Gil Do’s calls. Gil Do’s still dealing with that when he gets a call from Dokku who basically makes himself the one responsible for stopping Gil Sung’s boys (awww Dokku. We love you) and tells Gil Do that he’d spared Gil Do’s life because he didn’t want to make Da Hae an orphan. He does tell Gil Do however that should Gil Do continue with his plans, he will be coming over to kill Gil Do. Shortly after, Tae Ha returns and Gil Do’s suspicious about his injuries. When Tae Ha lies that he’d gotten them because he was drunk and fell on his face, Gil Do points him out to his wallet as he wonders how on earth Tae Ha was able to buy a drink without having a dime. When he cryptically tells Tae Ha to check through the wallet to be sure everything is in tact, Tae Ha steps out of the office to check and notices the folded up picture. With that confirmation, he meets with Moo Myeong to alert him to Gil Do knowing about all of them. Moo Myeong replies that Gil Do already showed him the picture and wonders if maybe Tae Ha betrayed him and gave it to Gil Do. He then tells Tae Ha to leave Goongnakwon so he can trust him again, but Tae Ha replies that he intends to stay until Moo Myeong has had his revenge. When he tells Moo Myeong to be careful though, Moo Myeong tells him that he can handle himself. Tae Ha isn’t so sure of that because that was the exact same thing Yeo Kyung had said and now she’s at the hospital. He hands Moo Myeong the hospital name and address and tells him to go visit her. But, by the time Moo Myeong gets to the hospital, Yeo Kyung is already gone.
3. Yeo Kyung backs Congressman Choi into a corner and So Tae Sub continues to strip Gil Do
Yeo Kyung and Prosecutor Ahn pay Congressman Choi a visit. He’s stunned, but even more so when Yeo Kyung informs him that because his aide wasn’t enough for them to be able to bring Gil Do down (I’m guessing his aid is the suspect she was questioning from yesterday’s episode), she intends to use him to catch the big whale. Congressman Choi is shocked and barks at Prosecutor Ahn to do something. Prosecutor Ahn though is just there to watch and Yeo Kyung offers Congressman Choi two choices. The first is for him to be charged for breaking tax laws for which he would pay a fine, but wouldn’t lose his seat on Congress and the second is that she would have him detained then have him jailed for three to five years if he doesn’t cooperate with her. When Congressman Choi sees that she wouldn’t budge, he chooses the first option. Yeo Kyung is okay with that but she wants Congressman Choi to give her Gil Do. She even offers to pay Congressman Choi for his troubles as well. Gil Do however, unaware of the web Yeo Kyung is presently spinning to trap him, pays a visit to So Tae Sub to ask him to apply more pressure on Yeo Kyung, especially because he thinks she has inside help. So Tae Sub though, doesn’t know why he has to help Gil Do clean up his own mess and when Gil Do asks it of him as favor, the Congressman asks him for payment in the form of money from Gil Do’s personal stash. Gil Do is shocked as he explains to the congressman that the foundation money isn’t his and him touching it is basically a sentence. Congressman So Tae Sub though just dangles the tempting carrot that once Gil Do’s a congressman, then no one would be able to touch him. He tells Gil Do to leave and even Gil Do accusing him of trying to strip him of everything he has, simply brings a smile to So Tae Sub’s face as So Tae Sub tells him that those who hunger for meat want everything, including the bone marrow.
4. Gil Do loses ground at Goongnakwon and Da Hae gives Tae Ha a tall order
Even as Gil Do is trying to deal with that development, he’s met with even more trouble as he sees movers carrying his things out of his office. By the time he gets there, it’s to find Gang Sook and Moo Myeong with the latter saying that he lost his patience and isn’t willing to give Gil Do those three days anymore and he wants him out now. Gang Sook then informs Gil Do that not only have they suspended his expense card, but they’ve also fired his henchmen. When Gil Do accuses her of being happy about the whole situation, Gang Sook doesn’t hold back her smile as she tells Gil Do that right now, she thinks she’s floating on cloud nine: everything’s so thrilling and she doesn’t think she can get enough of it all. Gil Do tells her that she’d better enjoy being on that cloud because he has every intention of dropping her off of it, and Gang Sook tells Moo Myeong, after Gil Do’s left that Gil Do’s scary because he always seeks to gain back what he’s lost (meaning, everyone has to watch their backs from now on. We have two more episodes to go people. Don’t be going off into dark spaces and be getting yourselves killed). Gil Do on the other hand thinks Gang Sook’s the scary one as she’s moved his sleeping bags and placed in the room and the exact same spot where her father had died (hahahaha. Gang Sook’s probably like if there’s any justice in this world, my father’s spirit shall haunt your ass). He asks Tae Ha if Tae Ha thinks all hope is lost for him. When Tae Ha replies that he thinks Gil Do’s cornered, Gil Do answers that everyone laughing at him now will shed tears when he wins the nomination and becomes a congressman (Which will make it all the more satisfying when he does not win the nomination. How happy would we all be if the house he ends up sitting in is jail and not Congress). After leaving Gil Do, Tae Ha meets with Da Hae who’s surprised with the new set of bruises on his face and has him promise her to stop getting hurt and to keep Gil Do from doing anything bad (I don’t know if he can keep that promise Da Hae). Tae Ha can’t give an answer to either of the two requests and leaves instead.
5. Gil Do buys So Tae Sub’s support and Seol Mi Ja gets her revenge on Moo Myeong
After withdrawing his stash of gold bars from the bank, Gil Do heads straight to Congressman So Tae Sub to offer him the gold as promised. So Tae Sub, ever willing to play mind games receives Gil Do in the very same room where he’d received Gil Do the first time they’d met, and has Gil Do use his own hands to put the gold bars in the very same safe Gil Do had broken into 30 years prior when he’d stolen from him. With that done, So Tae Sub passes Gil Do a list of the questions he’d be asked at his screening and tells Gil Do to read up as getting the nomination for his constituency should be easy. He does offer Gil Do a word of caution though, not to go after anyone else like he’s gone after Yeo Kyung as he has to stay above reproach until he’s nominated. So Tae Sub also adds that when Gil Do gets his Congress badge, then he would know why everyone would do anything to get that tiny gold badge. At the words, Gil Do smiles. When he gets back to Goongnakwon with the questions in hand and he starts to practice answering them, Seol Mi Ja comes to pay him a visit, surprised that he’s been exiled and is now treated like an outsider. Gil Do doesn’t mind though as he figures that he would get back Goongnakwon anyway and he intends to do so when they’re all at their happiest. Seol Mi Ja then asks him to transfer his promised shares to her. Gil Do though tells her to wait till he’s gotten his nomination (everyone’s waiting for this nomination of yours Gil Do), and Seol Mi Ja then offers him a file with Moo Myeong’s doctor report (why you snaking, lying, backstabbing, betraying bitch! Trust no one huh? Hope you’re left hanging to dry, right alongside Gil Do), and the invitation list. And as if that’s not bad enough, she actually confirms that Moo Myeong came to Goongnakwon to get revenge on Gil Do. She even readily admits that she used to be partners with Moo Myeong in bringing down Gil Do (and you shall have no one on your side when the end comes for you. I can guarantee that).
6. The monsters battle it out and Moo Myeong continues to spin his web
Enraged that he’d been betrayed all this while, Gil Do storms into his former office where Moo Myeong is at and calls him by his name: Choi Soon Seok, the son of Ha Jung Tae. Moo Myeong isn’t fazed as he calls Gil Do by his name as well and starts reeling out the address of the house where he was born (the land on which Goongnakwon presently lies), So Tae Sub’s house address (where Gil Do had committed his first crime. I guess no one told Moo Myeong about Gil Do killing his father as that act is his actual first crime), and Ha Jung Tae’s house address (where Gil Do had killed Ha Jung Tae and his wife and stolen Ha Jung Tae’s name and his life) and then Moo Myeong reels out Goongnakwon’s address and says that’s where Choi Soon Seok will steal everything from Gil Do; right where Gil Do was born. Enraged, Gil Do attacks Moo Myeong, but Moo Myeong is stronger and he slams him against the wall as he grits out to Moo Myeong that he’s kept Gil Do alive all this while, all so that he can take everything from him. Gil Do just laughs as he tells Moo Myeong that Ha Jung Tae has given birth to a monster (technically, I don’t think so. Sure the guy’s a cold fish but I don’t think I’ll call him a monster per se). Moo Myeong doesn’t even react to the words and just calmly tells Gil Do that there’s one more thing he has to take from Gil Do; the one thing Gil Do will never want to lose and he will take it from Gil Do, as cruelly as he can. He walks away from Gil Do and Gil Do sinks to the floor as he tells Ha Jung Tae that he should just wait as he will soon send his son to meet him in death. Back at Chimyeon restaurant, Hyun Jung walks in, having been invited by Moo Myeong. Sitted, Moo Myeong shares with her his idea to have her make the next cooking show episode a live show where viewers can participate. Hyun Jung smiles as she explains that that won’t be an easy thing to do and Moo Myeong drops the threat of Gil Do finding out about her close relationship with So Tae Sub. At the words, Hyun Jung agrees to the live shoot and even suggests that they make it a big production. He warns her though to make sure that Gil Do appears on the show, and that Gil Do mustn’t find out that the suggestion was Moo Myeong’s. Hyun Jung is all up for it, as long as Moo Myeong agrees to keep her secret.
7. Gang Sook surprises Seol Mi Ja
Alone with Seol Mi Ja who she talks to about Gil Do soon going crazy, Gang Sook brings up Seol Mi Ja’s sudden closeness with Gil Do but doesn’t dwell on it as she mentions that she wants to make Moo Myeong the Master of Noodles early enough before Gil Do finds a way to take the position back. Seol Mi Ja can’t allow her to do that however as she shares with Gang Sook the information that Moo Myeong is suffering from taste blindness and so is not fit for the position. Rather than be outraged, Gang Sook is impressed and laughs as she considers how unbelievably amazing Moo Myeong is, to pull off cooking all those great tasting noodles dish without a sense of taste (hahahaha. That was so not the response Seol Mi Ja was expecting. Heck it’s not what I would have expected. Why do I feel like Moo Myeong has already given her the heads-up?). When Seol Mi Ja gives an outraged bellow, Gang Sook puts her in her place that she is the one in charge of Goongnakwon not Seol Mi Ja, and so Seol Mi Ja should stop butting into her business (Now that’s the awesomeness of Gang Sook. A round of applause for Gang Sook everybody). And so, she moves in all of Moo Myeong’s new furniture and appoints him as the new Master of Noodles. Whilst Gil Do is in his exiled room practicing his interview questions, Moo Myeong walks around his new office, mentally showing his father the place where Gil Do has been living his glory days, all using the name and life he’d stolen from Jung Tae and where Gil Do will lose it all.
8. Yeo Kyung makes her play
Jung Tae heads in for his Congress nomination screening, unaware that Yeo Kyung has taken it upon herself to pay him a visit there, with Inspector Kim in tow, because she’s aware that there will be reporters there. Gil Do’s screening goes well, and So Tae Sub who had been the congressman in charge of asking him questions walks him out, and talks about how natural and persuasive Gil Do had been during his questioning. They’re still laughing at Gil Do’s brilliant interview and agreeing to work even better together when Yeo Kyung shows up to invite Gil Do to follow her with regards to Congressman Choi’s case (hahahaha. And her doing it in front of the flashing cameras is even so much more better). Yeo Kyung is thrilled as she informs Gil Do that she chose the venue because she knows there would be a lot of reporters there and she’s aware that Gil Do has to lie low for the elections. When Gil Do refuses, Yeo Kyung smiles as she tells him that people would talk. So Tae Sub seems to agree as well as he tells Gil Do to go along with Yeo Kyung. Back at the office, Yeo Kyung tells Inspector Kim to let Gil Do continue to cool his jets in the interrogation room (he’s been there for 7 hours already. Hahaha), whilst they wait for the outcome of the meeting she’s sure So Tae Sub is having with Congressman Choi. And sure enough, the two congressmen are meeting with So Tae Sub telling Congressman Choi that it is a better idea to go with the fines as otherwise, he will certainly be going to jail. Congressman Choi then brings up the fact that Goongnak Foundation will be looked into and by extension So Tae Sub. The words seem to work as So Tae Sub gives Congressman Choi the go ahead to be a witness, but tells him that they must make sure that the prosecution doesn’t go after Goongnak Foundation. Instead, he tells Congressman Choi to sell out Gil Do (Wow!!!!!! Awesome! I’m as shocked as Congressman Choi, but dancing the rhumba right now. You’re going down Gil Do). When Congressman Choi asks about Gil Do’s nomination and the fortune he must have paid So Tae Sub to get it, So Tae Sub smiles as he says that he never actually asked Gil Do to pay him. Gil Do was the one who did it willingly (damn that’s cold). Soon enough, Congressman Choi is calling Yeo Kyung with the good news and she’s smiles as she goes to meet Gil Do and tell him that he can go home.
9. Gil Do loses the nomination and Yeo Kyung’s still focused on bringing him down
Gil Do’s back at home when Tae Ha announces that Congressman Choi is there to see him. He’s surprised but receives the congressman who asks him about the nominations that would be announced that day. When he asks Gil Do if Gil Do’s nervous, Gil Do replies that he’s more nervous than the him with a bad hair day who had showed up at the Chimyeon Restaurant with nothing but the Royal Pheasant Buckwheat Noodles, had been. Congressman Choi smiles then tells him that he’s being moved to the special department which is basically the dead man zone set up to catch dirty congressmen like himself. Gil Do’s surprised as he believes that they can’t press charges on lost money. It’s at that point that Congressman Choi apologizes to Gil Do and tells him not to think ill of him. He walks away at about the same time, Gil Do sees the news report that shows that he failed to get the nomination. Back at the Prosecutor’s office, Yeo Kyung is surprised that Gil Do was so easily dropped and Prosecutor Ahn simply tells her that that’s politics. He also warns her not to let down her guard until Congressman Choi comes in to give his testimony. That aside, he asks her what else she has planned for Gil Do and she replies that she also intends to put him down for murder and for instigating murder. At the words, Prosecutor Ahn rises to give her an applause and tells her that she must do it right as the harder she pushes, the harder he knows Gil Do will try to resist. Gil Do, overcome with it all, asks Tae Ha to have a drink with him and when Tae Ha lays Gil Do down after his drunken night, he tells Gil Do’s sleeping form that he knows Gil Do was the one who gave his father the order to kill. But unlike his father, he will not kill but will rather just stand by Gil Do’s side and watch him go down. He even tells the sleeping Gil Do that Da Hae had begged him to keep Gil Do from sinning, but he knows that the only person that can pull that off is Gil Do himself. He leaves and the minute he does, Gil Do opens his eyes, full awake and sober.
10. A night of surprises
Gil Do calls So Tae Sub to ask for help in not going to prison. He tells So Tae Sub that he’s accepted the fact that he’s lost the nomination and that he’s lost Goongnak Foundation, but he doesn’t want to go to prison and so he needs So Tae Sub and Congressman Choi to help him out. He even adds that he has a little gift for So Tae Sub. At the words, So Tae Sub immediately agrees to help out and soon Congressman Choi is calling Yeo Kyung and telling her that he won’t be able to make it to her office that day as promised. Yeo Kyung realizing that all her work is going down the drain calls Dokku to ask for his help with the witness he’d promised to bring. Soon, it’s nighttime and Congressman Choi is on his way, calling Gil Do stupid, even as he wonders how much Gil Do’s bringing (something tells me he’s bringing death to you, not money. He never said he was bringing you a monetary gift). Gil Do meanwhile is leaving Goongnakwon and insists that he will be the one to drive and he’s going alone (that can’t be good for the people he’s meeting). When Tae Ha tries to insist on coming with him, Gil Do slaps him hard across the face, tells him that he gives the command and Tae Ha follows, and then he drives off to the meeting where both congressmen look happy to see him. As Congressman So Tae Sub asks him to have a seat, he tells him that he did good letting it all go because the past election isn’t going to be the last one and things never really go the way they all plan anyway (dude, that’s not calming the psychopath down). Congressman Choi impatiently asks Gil Do about the promised gift and even though So Tae Sub makes to hush Congressman Choi, Gil Do answers that of course he’s brought a gift for them seeing that his life depends on what they say. Congressman Choi is immediately happy as he starts to yap on about all hope not being lost and Gil Do still getting a chance as there are always vacancies made available in Congress. So Tae Sub however, keeps watching Gil Do carefully. When Gil Do notices the glass ashtray (similar to or same as the one he’d used in So Tae Sub’ house 30 years prior) he walks to it and in a move reminiscent of how he’d acted 30 years ago, counts to three and strikes Congressman Choi with the ashtray. He then turns to a stunned So Tae Sub and informs him the there is now a vacancy in Congress and asks if he can have it (alert everyone. The psycho is back). Meanwhile Dokku is overseeing Yeo Kyung’s interview of the witness he’s produced: Sung Rok (wait what? Sung Rok is alive? So Dokku intercepted the men Gil Do had sent to kill Sung Rok? Oh this is going to be good). Sung Rok is ready to be a witness to a myriad of Gil Do’s crimes, starting from the very heights of murder and instigation to commit murder, to other things like document falsification.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because Tae Ha knows exactly how much of a pretender Gil Do is. Why have that kind of confession with the man? Must the man even be present? Why the hell can’t he have the whole I shall get you back Gil Do, in his mind like Moo Myeong does? Urgh! So annoying. Do not wreck this for us Tae Ha. Gil Do still has two more hours to wreck havoc on us all. Please try and minimize it just a little bit.
Headache inducing moment:
I didn’t feel sorry for his death (does that make me a cold person?), but I saw the moment coming and I was screaming at him to at least save his life and not go see Gil Do as he was about to do. Like seriously, the guy stupidly let his greed take over and he paid the ultimate price.
This episode’s a twin pitchers of Sangria, because nothing taste as sweet as watching the whole world of our resident bad guy crumble. And considering that the take down has already started and we’re going to get 2 beautiful episodes to enjoy it, I feel merry and festive and so bloody happy.
