We hold our breaths because things get even more intense than the usual Master: God of Noodles style. Gil Do teams up with unlikely allies, as does Yeo Kyung. Moo Myeong finds someone else on his side and Tae Ha rushes to Yeo Kyung’s aid, only for everything to come crashing down because of a picture.
Top 10 Moments:
- Gil Do’s missing, but not for long
We pick up from Dokku visiting Gil Do in his office. After punching his way through everyone, he meets Gil Do who wonders why Dokku’s made a mess of everything instead of just sitting in prison for a couple of years (huh, Gil Do. Wrong words to tell a man that’s so pissed he looks like he wants to put you through a wall). Dokku though lays the blame on Gil Do who’s failed him and Gil Do smiles at all his people on the floor and says that Dokku is pretty strong. Dokku figures that’s why Gil Do hired him in the first place but Gil Do replies that he got Dokku because he knows that Dokku can’t kill anyone. He says this with a smile and Dokku proceeds to repeatedly punch Gil Do in the face (and I feel very very satisfied). By the time Tae Ha comes to, Gil Do’s missing and his number isn’t going through. He walks out of the office searching for Gil Do and runs into Da Hae who asks about the obvious fight he’d gotten into. Tae Ha doesn’t answer though and wants her to try calling Dokku. Dokku’s number though isn’t going through, but he ends up calling Da Hae back who hands the phone over to Tae Ha. Dokku answers Tae Ha’s questions about Gil Do by apologizing for introducing him to Gil Do who’s obviously won Tae Ha’s loyalty and he tells Tae Ha to get out of dodge. When Tae Ha presses for Gil Do’s location, Dokku simply tells him that Gil Do’s thrash who has been put in a place where thrash is kept (Woohoo. Go Dokku! Just tell me you haven’t killed him though. We don’t want you having murder on your rap sheet). Tae Ha finally tracks Gil Do to an abandoned building where he spots Gil Do’s phone outside a padlocked door (um, that phone had better have a tracking device because I don’t know how else you were able to find him Tae Ha). He burst the padlock open and runs into the building where he sees a beaten up Gil Do, tied up in a chair, with ink drying on his thumb. Gil Do explains that Dokku hadn’t planned on killing him all along. What he’d wanted instead had been Gil Do’s prints and the key to accessing the bank account with all the money in it (let’s all stand and clap for Dokku hitting Gil Do in one of the places it hurts the most: his money).
2. Some doctors can’t be trusted
Following his discovery of his taste blindness, Moo Myeong goes to visit a doctor to find out what’s wrong with him. The doctor tells him that he’s suffering from taste blindness probably induced by trauma and asks him if anything stressful had happened to him recently. Moo Myeong remembers his conversation with Gil Do and the reference to the burning of his parents’ bodies, but doesn’t share that insight with the doctor. The doctor then recommends psychotherapy to see if it would work. Moo Myeong heads home, reminding himself that he has to become the Master of Noodles before he runs out of time, unaware that the doctor who has obviously forgotten the rules about patient confidentiality calls Seol Mi Ja to appraise her on Moo Myeong’s present condition (of all the doctors you could visit Moo Myeong, you had to go to the one you know knows Seol Mi Ja), as she’s Moo Myeong’s guardian. He explains the predicament and states that Moo Myeong looked very nervous, hence the reason why he felt he had to tell her. Seol Mi Ja is as expected, shocked and heads to Gang Sook’s room where she’s even more shocked to find Moo Myeong chatting with Gang Sook. He leaves as she enters and Seol Mi Ja wonders what the two of them were talking about. Gang Sook makes mention to the fact that they have a lot to discuss since Moo Myeong will soon become the Master of Noodles and although Seol Mi Ja’s surprised that Moo Myeong is rising to the position so soon, she doesn’t give him away. When Gang Sook asks when Seol Mi Ja intends to take over the Foundation, Seol Mi Ja points to the fact that Gil Do is currently in a bad mood and she would rather wait a couple of days to see him. She then states that she can offer Gang Sook advise on how to run Goongnakwon whilst Gang Sook offers her accounting advice with Goongnak Foundation. The words bring Gang Sook’s back up as she gets suspicious of Seol Mi Ja trying to take over Goongnakwon. When Seol Mi Ja makes mention to the fact that Gang Sook is not at the moment doing a good job of running the restaurant, Gang Sook tells her that she doesn’t care if she runs the restaurant to the ground or not, Seol Mi Ja should butt out or she will ensure Seol Mi Ja starts paying for the food every time she comes to eat at Goongnakwon (hahahaha).
3. Moo Myeong tells Da Hae the rest of the truth & Gil Do gets robbed
Not able to get over Moo Myeong’s words that Gil Do killed his parents, and remembering Dae Chun calling Gil Do a murderer; plus Dokku’s words about Gil Do making everyone around him miserable, Da Hae goes to visit Moo Myeong at the Chimyeon restaurant on her day off. She asks him if now that Gil Do has been removed as the head of the foundation and master of noodles, his revenge is complete. Moo Myeong answers though that his revenge won’t be complete until he’s taken everything from Gil Do, including his father’s life that Gil Do had taken away from his father. He confesses to Da Hae that Gil Do stole the Royal Pheasant Buckwheat noodles and he intends to prove it to the rest of the world. He offers to prove it to her(can you do that though Moo Myeong? I thought your sense of taste has gone to shit). When he has her smell the broth, he asks her if it smells exactly the same and when she states that it smells slightly different, he tells her that it’s because of an additional ingredient: Brasenia which is known for being tasteless and without a smell, and which is his father’s secret ingredient. When he adds it to the broth and has Da Hae smell it, she tearfully realizes that Moo Myeong’s father really had perfected the Royal Pheasant Buckwheat noodles. Meanwhile Gil Do is growling Dokku’s name as the banker apologetically informs him that they’d given Dokku the money because not only had Dokku shown up with a power of attorney but he’d also come with Gil Do’s personal seal.
4. Dokku and Yeo Kyung are working together
We see Dokku waiting underneath a bridge and who would we see pull up but Yeo Kyung who asks him for the document (wait, when did you two start working together?). He pushes forward the envelope but pulls it back at the last moment to tell Yeo Kyung that a suspension won’t do. He wants Yeo Kyung to prove to him that she’s destroyed everything she had drawn up against him and that he’s cleared. Yeo Kyung hands Dokku the file she has on him and tells him that he can do whatever he wants to do with it. In turn, he hands her the envelope which contain the actual report of defense industry corruption with no names crossed out or hidden. With the report in her hands, Yeo Kyung asks Dokku if he has plans to get out of town. Dokku replies that he doesn’t though as he figures he will as well stay in town since he’s already gotten his hands dirty. He makes to leave but stops to advise Yeo Kyung that she should learn to slow down as she keeps hurtling headlong into things. He tells her that she should be careful as the world is full of crazy lunatics and the craziest of them all is Gil Do. Yeo Kyung tells him that she would be able to handle herself and Dokku asks her if she can handle Gil Do. When she answers in the affirmative, he asks her for one more favor: to not charge Tae Ha with anything as he doesn’t know any of what’s going on (awwww Dokku. Looking out for your puppy huh?). When Yeo Kyung, surprised, asks how Dokku knows Tae Ha, Dokku answers that Tae Ha is the son of his friend. Then it’s Dokku’s turn to be surprised to learn that Yeo Kyung’s parents were killed by Park Moo Taek. Gil Do meanwhile is in his car, prepping and making himself look better as he tells Tae Ha that others would have gone mad with rage, but his own focus right now is getting revenge and how much it would be, because Dokku took something Gil Do wants back, badly (And why am I worried that it’s presently with Yeo Kyung?).
5. Dokku tells Yeo Kyung the truth and she in turn confronts Gil Do
At the interrogation room, Dokku is amazed at how interconnected everything is whilst Yeo Kyung wants to know if Moo Taek worked for Gil Do. Dokku nods as he answers that he should have tried stopping Moo Taek as he had been the one who had been given the order at first. He’d turned it down because he doesn’t kill people, which was when Gil Do had given the order to Moo Taek and had given him drugs and a knife and sent him along to Yeo Kyung’s house (wait what?! And you couldn’t tell Tae Ha this Dokku? Like come on! Gil Do has been feeding our boy with lies for like forever. Why would you do this to Tae Ha?). Dokku sighs as he says that Moo Taek used to be a gentle man who was changed by the drugs and if Dokku hadn’t called that day, Moo Taek would have killed Yeo Kyung as well (why that lying, sneaking jerk Gil Do!). Yeo Kyung is surprised as she thought that it was Gil Do that had called. When she tells Dokku that Gil Do had even known her father’s number, Dokku answers that Gil Do probably memorized Yeo Kyung’s father’s phone number from the case files all so he can lie to her and then he reels out her father’s number. As Yeo Kyung looks stunned, Dokku tells her to store his number on speed dial as it would seem that he also owes her a debt. Yeo Kyung in the meanwhile doesn’t know she has a waiting visitor and so when she steps back into her office, her attention is drawn to Gil Do, who’s waiting for her. Not giving anything away, Yeo Kyung tells Inspector Kim to go attend to the witness being questioned and when left alone, Gil Do asks her why she lost Dokku. When Yeo Kyung replies that he’s not her superior and she doesn’t answer to him, he asks her why she let Dokku go, coming to that conclusion because she didn’t indict Dokku and so he figures she must have cut a deal. Yeo Kyung just smiles as she says he must be very imaginative to think she would let a suspect go. Gil Do isn’t buying it though as he tells Yeo Kyung that if he reveals that she took a bribe, then her days of being a prosecutor will be over, which would mean she would revert back to being a nobody. He warns her not to walk on a loose tightrope and to choose her sides carefully and Yeo Kyung replies that she’s not a walking a tightrope and so is not going to fall. She also adds that if he reveals the fact that she took a bribe, then he would be implicating himself as well and unlike her who is ready to put her badge on the line and so has nothing to lose, Gil Do has everything to lose. Gil Do concludes that their story will not have a happy ending and Yeo Kyung agrees, seeing that they’re already barreling towards each other. When Gil Do warns her that his is not the only blade pointed at her as Congressman So Tae Sub would also have one pointed at her should he find out that she’s with the confidential document, Yeo Kyung answers that her own blade is pointed at only one person. As he makes to leave, she stops him and then takes him to the investigation room where a suspect is tied up. Even as Gil Do asks her why she’s still working with Congressman So Tae Sub after everything he’s told her, Yeo Kyung continues her questioning of the witness, asking the man if it’s true that he’d met with Gil Do six times and had given him money in three of those times. The man admits to it and Yeo Kyung tells Gil Do to be prepared to get subpoenaed and not to even dream of traveling abroad as she’s got him good now.
6. Gil Do starts to lose his allies and Da Hae and Tae Ha continue to be cute
Upset with Yeo Kyung’s questioning, Gil Do calls smarmy Prosecutor Ahn to ask the man why he’s siding with So Tae Sub and why Yeo Kyung is back at work, even after the amount of money he’s shoved down the man’s throat. Prosecutor Ahn drops the honorific as he calls Gil Do ‘Mr. Noodle Maker’ (wow. That feels good) and tells him that it would seem Gil Do doesn’t know when to draw the line. He tells Gil Do that he’s no pushover but had just been helping him out because of his superior. He tells Gil Do not to boast about the little money he’d given him, at which point Gil Do loses his temper and pours a drink in Prosecutor Ahn’s face before shoving said face into his food. As he holds Prosecutor Ahn’s head down, he reminds him of the words the prosecutor had told Congressman Choi about learning to express his gratitude as things like this happen when a person becomes indebted to someone else and tries to lord over that person. He tells Prosecutor Ahn that he would have been worried about what he can do if Prosecutor Ahn had been spotless. But, the Prosecutor hasn’t been spotless as he’s been on his payroll for the past 10 years, which Gil Do takes it to mean that should he go down, then he will be dragging Prosecutor Ahn down with him. He leaves but not before telling Prosecutor Ahn to set up a meeting between himself, Prosecutor Ahn and So Tae Sub. Back at home, Gil Do wonders aloud to Tae Ha about Dokku and So Tae Sub probably working together with Yeo Kyung. What he doesn’t understand though is why Yeo Kyung is still after him, after she’s already gotten the document. He tells Tae Ha that he will have the meeting to confirm if the Congressman has the document but if So Tae Sub doesn’t, then Yeo Kyung will be the first person to see his inner monster. The words clearly distress Tae Ha (then get the fuck out of there Tae Ha. Before Gil Do has you doing something you shouldn’t do to your friends) who leaves shortly after and finds Da Hae waiting for him. He’s touched that she’s waited for him and Da Hae tells him that she’s also staying awake because she remembers Dokku’s words that no one is happy around Gil Do. When she tells him that she hopes he’s the exception, Tae Ha says nothing and just falls asleep on her shoulder.
7. A shifting of the sands and the forming of allies
Moo Myeong tries to keep his sudden affliction away from the rest of Goongnakwon, but fails because unknown to him Seol Ja has sent Won Sang to test his tastebuds. He carries out her command and Moo Myeong tastes an extremely salty beef tartare dish and declares it as okay. Seol Mi Ja tells her new ally to not tell anyone about the discovery, particularly Gang Sook who she says is on the same team as Moo Myeong. Won Sang then puts aside the dish to be recycled, unaware that Gil Young and the side dish girl have snagged the plate, thinking they’ll get the chance to eat the amazing meal without having to pay for it. They dig in and spit it out immediately because of all the salt. At that moment, Da Hae enters the room and spots them trying to hide the dish. When they mutter about the food being purposefully messed with so they can’t eat it, Da Hae remembers that Moo Myeong had tasted it and said it was all good. She goes straight to her computer to research on taste blindness and its causes and looks distraught at the discovery. Gil Do meanwhile is meeting with So Tae Sub who he hands over the document pertaining to the current management status of Goongnakwon, complete with a list of donor names and the amounts they donated. He also adds that quite a number of the donors are members of the So Tae Sub’s opposing party and tells So Tae Sub that he’s tired of fighting. The congressman is delighted at the truce and Gil Do, fishing for information mentions the secret document whose location So Tae Sub immediately asks about. His suspicions confirmed, Gil Do tells the congressman that he will make it available in seven days, after the candidate screenings have been confirmed. So Tae Sub is willing to wait that long and makes to leave with the document but Gil Do stops him and tells him that Yeo Kyung is being ferocious and annoying with her investigation because she thinks she has So Tae Sub’s support and he asks if he can handle her personally. When So Tae Sub answers that even he wouldn’t touch a prosecutor, Gil Do says he would get Yeo Kyung removed as a prosecutor and all So Tae Sub needs to do is to pretend like he is unaware. Yeo Kyung’s on her way to her car when she’s startled by Tae Ha who has snuck away in order to warn her about the danger she’s in. When Yeo Kyung proves unbothered about the threat, Tae Ha snaps at her to just let things go, as it won’t change anything. Yeo Kyung though isn’t having that as she tells Tae Ha that Gil Do has been deceiving them and he was the one that had instigated Yeo Kyung’s parents murder. Tae Ha is understandably disbelieving and pissed as he asks Yeo Kyung who told her that. When she answers that it’s Dokku, Tae Ha yells that he doesn’t know exactly who to believe and who’s telling the truth. He leaves a frustrated Yeo Kyung behind and walks away.
8. Seol Mi Ja makes a deal with the devil
Seol Mi Ja shows up the next morning, at Goongnak Foundation and is surprised to find out that all the donations have disappeared. Gil Do answers her that half the contributions are overseas and the other half, he keeps in cash. Seol Mi Ja is shocked at his actions but Gil Do spins it around to tell her that one has to be bold to do bad things and someone who isn’t bold is quickly noticed. He smiles as he asks her what kind of director she would be: one who would be upright and who would report the shady dealings in Goongnak Foundation and thus bring it all down, or would she continue to walk in his shady ways. He walks up to her as he tells her she’s not cut for the job and should just focus on Goongnakwon instead of thinking to run Goongnak Foundation. Seol Mi Ja though replies that Gang Sook has full control of Goongnakwon, to which Gil Do whispers the tempting suggestion of her taking his shares, because his shares, with hers, and then the Moon family’s shares will all exceed Gang Sook’s shares and Seol Mi Ja can then kick her out of Goongnakwon. Seol Mi Ja is all up for it (wait what? Seol Mi Ja, what happened to your promise to a dying Dae Chun to take care of his daughter?) on the condition that she’s the one that will run Goongnakwon and not Gil Do. Gil Do smiles as he agrees and Seol Mi Ja is just about to tell him about Moo Myeong’s taste sensitivity when Hyun Jung interrupts, wondering why the two of them are suddenly so chummy (trust me, I’m also wondering what Seol Mi Ja is thinking) and to remind Gil Do about the shoot that he seems to have forgotten about. Although he’s meant to shoot it with only Moo Myeong, Da Hae steps in and asks to be a part of the show. When Gil Do asks her why she wants to be a part of the show, Da Hae answers that she wants to show the world that there are female noodles makers. When Gil Do asks why she agreed with his dismissal, she answers that she’d agreed because she didn’t think Gil Do had noodles or the best interest of Goongnakwon at heart.
9. Yeo Kyung finds an unexpected ally as does Moo Myeong
Prosecutor Ahn sits Yeo Kyung down to brief her that Congressman So has given her the command to stop and wait. Prosecutor Ahn explains that the command is just Congressman So’s euphemistic way of dismissing her from her post. Prosecutor Ahn apologizes that he can’t prevent it because he has a family to raise and when he confirms that she did take some money, he offers to be a shield and buy her the time she needs to make her arrest of Gil Do (wow Prosecutor Ahn. I take back every mean and nasty thing I said about you). He tells her to strike hard at Gil Do when she can and when Yeo Kyung asks why he’s helping her, he answers that he recently met Gil Do, who trampled over him. The act reminded him that he has a little bit of pride left and he tells Yeo Kyung that he’s what she will become if she continues taking bribes. He tells her to return any money she’s received from Gil Do, back to Gil Do, and never takes bribes again. He also adds that he can get her only a month so she should do everything she wants to do within that time frame. As he leaves, Yeo Kyung gets a message from Dokku about the package he sent her and he tells her to use it wisely. Yeo Kyung checks the package and is shocked to discover a witness application form. Meanwhile, Moo Myeong is psyching himself up just before he goes on the show, reminding himself that he’s too close to his goal to mess things up now. When the camera starts to roll, Moo Myeong presents his dish: Nuruen Guksu, which is the same as the noodle dish he’d made the last time, just with a different name. Moo Myeong uses the opportunity to explain that Nureun Guksu is the original name of the dish and was a name that was lost until it was recently re-discovered. He then mentions that he too is looking for a name for his father. Next up is Da Hae who presents her dish and explains that the first time she tasted it, it reminded her of the ocean rushing into her mouth. She ends her story by calling out to her ‘so called father’ to repent as it’s not too late for him to go back to the beginning. Finally it’s Gil Do’s turn and he’s cooked exactly the same meal as Da Hae with the claim that his hope is to serve it as his child’s first meal. When it’s time for them to assess each other’s dish, Da Hae immediately grabs Moo Myeong’s bowl whilst Gil Do takes hers. When it’s time to taste, Da Hae pushes through to eat the meal and smile like it’s really good. Moo Myeong, aware that she’s covering for him, thanks her for the help, whilst Gil Do asks to speak to him after they’re all done.
10. Everything goes to hell
After receiving the call from Congressman So Tae Sub that he’s now free to do whatever he wants to Yeo Kyung, Gil Do gets a maniacal grin and hires someone to kidnap or do whatever he wants with Yeo Kyung, as long as he gets him that document. Tae Ha however recognizes the man as the same prisoner that had been about to stab him whilst he was in prison and goes to meet Gil Do to ask what the man and his partner were doing with him. Gil Do just gives a cryptic reply that the men are off to do something dark and dangerous; something that Tae Ha wouldn’t be able to do. When he asks if anything’s wrong, Tae Ha replies to the negative and then takes off running the minute he’s out of the house (go Tae Ha go! Poor Tae Ha. I’m sure all he’s thinking right now is the fact that his father had raced off to kill her parents and now he must hurry to prevent her from being killed. The irony). He gets into his car and starts heading towards her, all the while calling her, but her number isn’t going through because Yeo Kyung is at the moment, having a phone call with a lead. When she leaves to meet her lead, Gil Do’s hired hands are immediately on her tail. The minute she reaches her destination, they grab her, hit her and try to drag her into their waiting van. Thankfully, Tae Ha shows up right at the moment and proceeds to beat up all the men, whilst Yeo Kyung slips in and out of unconsciousness. Just as Yeo Kyung regains consciousness, someone comes behind Tae Ha with a weapon drawn, whilst in Goongnakwon, Gil Do discovers Tae Ha’s wallet and in trying to slip him some money, sees the picture from the orphanage showing Tae Ha, Yeo Kyung and Choi Soon Seok, just at the exact moment that Moo Myeong steps into his office.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
With how fast paced everything is? No one of course. Everyone is on their A-game and I’m in love. It’s all so good.
Headache inducing moment:
Because I remember saying it recently that Tae Ha having that picture in Goongnakwon was a bad move; a very bad move. And the minute I saw his wallet, I knew, knew what would happen even as Gil Do opened the wallet and even though I held my breath, I knew it wasn’t enough to keep Tae Ha’s secret for just a little while longer. (Gosh, my heart is in pain!).
This episode’s a Spicy Beet Bloody Mary. Spicy with all the high paced action that has our temperature rising and has us panting and watching affixed at all the players making their moves and bloody with the way everyone is playing the game. Give me more Master: God of Noodles. Give me more.
