Sometimes in accepting to be hurt, we give even more power to the person hurting us. Hae Young and Do Kyung’s happy moment is dampened by her mother’s disapproval of their relationship. Jin Sang and Soo Kyung take giant strides in their relationship and Do Kyung begs to live.
Top 10 Moments:
- Hae Young bears witness to the Parks’ madness
Whilst waiting for Do Kyung to get back from work, Hae Young who is waiting by the shrubs spots the happenings of the Park household, starting with Hoon and Anna’s enthusiastic hug and public cuddle session. When the two lovers are done with their greeting, Hoon notices Hae Young’s presence and comments on her waiting for Do Kyung like a wife with soup in hand. He’s teasing but the smile drops when he realizes that Hae Young really did make soup for Do Kyung (hahahahaha. Don’t blame her though Hoon. She’s in love). Next up is Soo Kyung, acting like she’s drunk because Jin Sang hasn’t called her yet. And then, Hae Young spots Jin Sang who has been hiding in the shrubs this whole while. He tries to give himself the fortitude to head inside the house but his courage keeps failing him and he does it so much that Hae Young correctly guesses that he must have done something wrong: something very huge (you have no idea Hae Young. It’s so big it will be coming out as a human being in nine months. Hahahaha). Jin Sang the coward runs away of course and soon, Do Kyung finally pulls up. Hae Young runs to hide behind the shrubs so as to give him a scare, but Do Kyung scares her first. He walks away with a smile and Hae Young follows him to give him a back hug. Soon they walk like that into his house. Whilst in his studio, Hae Young asks the exact same question Jin Sang had been the one to ask in his vision: How does it feel for him to work in the same studio his father had once used. Do Kyung merely gives a bittersweet smile and then Hae Young asks him when his father passed away. Do Kyung explains that his dad had died whilst he was eight years old, on a recording trip he had gone with little Do Kyung. Adult Do Kyung also explains that he’s happy his father had passed away whilst he’d been there to hold his hand. To think of happier times, Do Kyung plays a recording his father had made of child Do Kyung singing and child Soo Kyung playing the piano to accompany him and both he and Hae Young smile at the remembered memory. Do Kyung’s thoughts though, go to when his psychologist had taken him to see another psychologist and together, they’d explained to the man the nature of Do Kyung’s visions and Do Kyung’s belief that the visions are his future self, bringing him images of Hae Young as he regretfully dies and asks himself why he couldn’t love her more. Doc’s sunbae had asked Do Kyung if he’s heard about reaching enlightenment; that moment before death when a person realizes that he’s had nothing to fear all along and had continued by saying that emotions can be divided into love and fear and that Do Kyung had found the genuine emotion instead of the fake (I take it love is genuine and fear is fake then). When Do Kyung’s doc had insisted that his sunbae put Do Kyung under hypnosis or something, the sunbae had explained that Do Kyung already knows which path to take, and matter of fact would still take the path, but is just temporarily scared at the moment is all. Do Kyung now snaps back to the present and plays for Hae Young, a recording of child Soo Kyung singing her own song. Adult Soo Kyung who can hear her childhood self singing asks where that cute child has gone.
- Jin Sang’s overactive imagination
Jin Sang meanwhile, back in his room in the Park household, is making himself miserable as he calls up images of what married life with Soo Kyung will be like. Starting from her bossing him around whilst they take their wedding photographs, then moving to her interrupting the housewarming party he threw wearing a hanbok and dragging a baseball bat behind her as she targets it at one of Do Kyung’s sound crew members who hadn’t known that in her house, you squat and pee (hahaha. And the way she cocks the bat like she’s cocking a gun is just too hilarious). Jin Sang also imagines that she will use his head to test her fighting skills by kicking first an apple from the top of his head and then kicking him in the mouth so he can lose the piece of grape she’d stuck in there. The move jerks Jin Sang awake and he’s barely able to come to terms with it when Hoon walks into the room, teasing him as he tells Jin Sang that he’d imagined that Jin Sang would not have come home that night. When he explains to Jin Sang that he would understand Jin Sang running away because no one should be saddled with Soo Kyung at such a young age, Jin Sang gets angry as he points out that Hoon is a delinquent for not knowing the baby is a person and not an object that can be tossed around. Hoon takes offense at the insult and starts hitting Jin Sang with the pillow, accusing Jin Sang of overreacting when it’s obvious that he’d read his mind: Jin Sang wants to run away. Jin Sang starts to hit him back and they’re so carried away with their fight that they don’t notice until Soo Kyung is right in front of them, bat in hand as she accuses Hoon of still treating Jin Sang with disrespect, and accuses Jin Sang of not demanding respect. Her solution is simple. She tosses the bat at Jin Sang and tells him that he should cleanly finish off Hoon as he’s not leaving the room until Hoon is dead (hahahaha). With those words, she leaves and Hoon immediately turns apologetic to Jin Sang, even going as far as calling him brother-in-law (hahahaha. Talk about an immediate taming).
3. Soo Kyung tries to get Jin Sang to see her as a woman
Jin Sang finally gets out of his room and goes to Soo Kyung’s room where he looks miserable as she applies her makeup. Soo Kyung reminds him though that he’s not the only one who feels things are now weird and awkward because that’s how she feels as well. Especially considering the fact that she’s been like an older sister to him for the past 20 years (wow. That’s a long time). She tells him not to worry as she still intends to move to another country and Jin Sang can continue to live as freely as he’s doing at the moment. When she tells him to walk away, pack and leave the house, Jin Sang mumbles that the baby is his. The words get Soo Kyung to walk to Jin Sang as she asks him if he can ever kiss her (Wait what? Is this your way of asking him if he sees you as a woman because if that’s the case, then I like very much). She leans forward to kiss him, but Jin Sang turns away at the very last moment. Soo Kyung doesn’t take it to heart though as she tells him that she will give him one more day to think about whether or not he will be able to kiss her. It is then, she says, he will know his answer.
4. Do Kyung and other Hae Young start the process of moving on
After a day spent recording sounds at the market and the food court, Do Kyung and his crew members stop over at an inn. Whilst waiting for the boys to finish their business in the toilet, Do Kyung looks melancholic as he stares at the inn’s interior. He moves to pull out one of the albums filled with images of past couples who had visited the place. Soon enough, he gets to an image of himself with someone who had torn out her part of the picture (well, hello there other Hae Young) and had instead written in the place where her picture used to be “Thank you for your love”. Other Hae Young meanwhile, is on her blind date with a man who is cheerfully happy that she agreed to the meet (awww. You really should date him other Hae Young. He looks sweet). She’s in the middle of hearing her date call her pretty when she receives a thank you text from Do Kyung. Her face falls for a moment, then brightens as she apologizes to her date for getting distracted by her phone. And then, she offers to switch off her phone so she can concentrate on their date. Her date is thrilled (and quite frankly, so am I. Good for you for moving on other Hae Young. It’s about time you found your own happiness outside of Do Kyung).
5. Hae Young unknowingly spills the beans
Whilst chatting with her cousin (the daughter of Mama Oh’s nosy sister-in-law), Hae Young and the girl get to talking about her cousin’s fear of getting married. When her cousin wonders if she should just break it off like Hae Young had done, Hae Young corrects her that she didn’t break things off, she was dumped. Her cousin then says that Hae Young must have really gotten over the incident with how easily she’s admitting to it and then wonders what she would do because the friend who was supposed to catch her bouquet has broken up with her boyfriend. Hae Young though is willing to catch the bouquet, confirming in one breath that she is coming to the wedding. Hae Young however has no idea that the chat she and her cousin are using is the group chat, meaning both her nosy aunt and Mama Oh are privy to their conversation. When nosy aunt expresses surprise that Hae Young is coming considering the fact that Mama Oh had even said she wouldn’t be able to make it, Hae Young admits to not only coming to the wedding but also the fact that she’s now dating the man who ruined her wedding. Her cousin is surprised and Hae Young even offers to bring Do Kyung with her to the wedding and soon both girls are gushing about Do Kyung whilst nosy aunt questions Mama Oh if truly Hae Young is dating Do Kyung. Mama Oh doesn’t answer but instead stomps over to Hae Young’s room to ask how she expects to bring Do Kyung to the wedding when everyone would call her a crazy bitch for dating Do Kyung. Hae Young though wonders why her mother can’t just be on her side, especially considering the fact that Do Kyung is actually the one who feels the most guilty in the situation. Hae Young explains that she wants to show Do Kyung that no one in her family blames him and so he shouldn’t be discouraged. Mama Oh just tells her to date him quietly and break up with him. She is not happy to hear though that Hae Young has no intention of just dating Do Kyung (I know you think he’s caused her a lot of pain Mama Oh, but honestly, Tae Jin is the one to blame for this whole mess; for trusting the wrong business partner and then actually calling off the wedding. he didn’t need to call off the wedding because he was going to jail. He chose to call off the wedding. It’s not Do Kyung’s fault).
6. Tae Jin has frightening anger issues & Do Kyung receives a visit from Mama Oh
Whilst on his way back with the sound crew boys, Do Kyung feels an impact of their car being hit. But, when he turns around, he sees nothing and everyone except the driver is blissfully asleep. Even as he deals with that, he gets another vision where he sees someone actually chasing him with a car (someone who looks suspiciously like Tae Jin). Tae Jin on the other hand is back at the restaurant and beating up the waiter who had suggested the words he had used to break up with Hae Young (wait what? Dude! It’s not the guy’s fault that you’re a moron who took his advise. Advise is just that. Words that you can either take or decide not to take). When he shouts at the waiter for not advising him to just tell Hae Young the truth (Seriously Tae Jin? You’re going to go there), the waiter finally pushes away and reminds Tae Jin that he’d stated that Hae Young had backed away, which was essentially what Tae Jin had wanted to happen anyway (thank you for calling it as it is waiter guy). When Tae Jin continues to threaten the guy, the waiter asks him if he regrets dumping Hae Young. Tae Jin finally leaves the bar and walks the bridge, screaming Do Kyung’s name and asking what he should do with him (seriously dude? It’s not Do Kyung’s fault. Stop with the blaming and self-destruction). Do Kyung meanwhile, is at home, surprised to receive Mama Oh who has come to inform him that Hae Young, who thinks that dating would always lead to marriage, plans to invite him to her cousin’s wedding the next day. Mama Oh tells him that she is well aware that not everyone this days thinks that dating should lead to marriage and she’s particularly sure that Do Kyung is just testing the waters. Do Kyung though just replies that he likes Hae Young, but Mama Oh points out the important words he’s left out; words like he will marry her. She explains to Do Kyung that even if Hae Young tells him that the wedding is just about coming to grab a meal, he shouldn’t think like that as what it basically is, is that Hae Young is introducing him to the family elders as the man she wants to marry, and so Do Kyung coming and then eventually breaking things off with Hae Young would be like having her wedding broken up again. She tells Do Kyung to think about it as if he shows up at the wedding, then that means he’s agreeing to marry Hae Young. Do Kyung though (most likely thinking about his coming death) ends up lying to Hae Young that he has to work, when she calls to invite him to the wedding. Mama Oh receives the news knowing fully well what Do Kyung has basically told her about the future of his relationship with Hae Young.
7. Hae Young finds out that other Hae Young envied her as well
Whilst Jin Sang is still being harassed by Soo Kyung about the kiss he’s meant to give her, Hae Young is at her cousin’s wedding, catching the thrown bouquet, not once, but twice (hahahaha). This act doesn’t go unnoticed by the elders of course, and just like Mama Oh had predicted, they’re all set abuzz at the thought of Hae Young getting married again, whilst nosy sister-in-law volunteers to give them the sordid tale in its entirety, after the wedding. On their way back, Hae Young talks about being called pretty at her wedding and her mother can barely hold in a sigh. Meanwhile Do Kyung is shopping for groceries so he can make Hae Young a meal just as he’d promised and Jin Sang who can’t afford to be at home with Soo Young comes along with him, yapping insistently on Do Kyung choosing a cooking method that makes him look cool and has his muscles popping out. Do Kyung of course doesn’t pay him any mind. Back at home, Do Kyung serves Hae Young the food he’d prepared and she’s pleasantly surprised that he’s a really good cook. Trying to figure out if there’s anything he can’t do, Hae Young brings the question right back to Do Kyung telling her she looks cute whilst she eats. When Do Kyung doesn’t say it, she grumbles until he tells her she’s pretty, whilst she’s slurping down noodles (Gah! So cute. You two are just too cute). She squeals that she’s happy and they both laugh. After dinner, Hae Young pulls out a letter she’s just received that a secret admirer had sent her back when she was in school. Do Kyung had initially stated before she started reading that he wouldn’t be jealous of a school boy’s crush, but he’s soon demanding to know who the writer of the letter is when Hae Young reads out the content that has the boy with the crush on her telling her that he’d followed her that day because she’d been crying and had wanted to offer her comfort just in case she’d fallen down. The boy had written that when he’d found out that Hae Young was crying because Chan Gook Young had died, he had wanted hated the man for dying and making Hae Young cry and had gone home to rip up the images of the man that he could find at home. Whilst Hae Young laughs at jealous Do Kyung demanding to meet the boy who had written the letter, a flashback shows that it was other Hae Young who had passed the love letter over to her, as well as a note from other Hae Young herself who had explained that she’d gotten the letter and kept it for the past 13 years because she’d been jealous of Hae Young who had grown up with loving parents and now had love from a boy. Other Hae Young explains that although she’d thrown away all the letters that had been addressed to her, she hadn’t been able to toss away Hae Young’s letter because she knew it wasn’t hers to throw away. She also admits that she’d always been jealous of Hae Young and had figured that when she’s able to admit to herself that she had been jealous of Hae Young, then she would be able to pass along the letter. As Hae Young reads the note, she draws comfort in the fact that other Hae Young had been as jealous of her as Hae Young had been as jealous of other Hae Young. Back in the present, Hee Ran sends Hae Young a snapshot of the boy that had had the crush on Hae Young, and whilst Do Kyung tries to wrestle Hae Young’s phone from her so he can catch a glimpse of the boy, Mama Oh calls and Hae Young lies that she’s sleeping over at Hee Ran’s. Mama Oh doesn’t buy the story though as she asks Hae Young to put Hee Ran on the phone then. Busted, Hae Young stomps back home.
8. Hae Young finds out about Do Kyung not wanting to marry her
Back home, Hae Young rails at her mother who having had enough comes out to tell her that she she shouldn’t be going to Do Kyung’s house anymore or cooking for him. When Hae Young informs Mama Oh that Do Kyung was the one who cooked, Mama Oh, angry, asks why Do Kyung would cook when he plans on breaking up with Hae Young anyway. When Hae Young asks for an explanation, Mama Oh tells her that she’d told Do Kyung not to come to the wedding if he had no plans of marrying Hae Young, and sure enough Do Kyung hadn’t come. Hae Young hurt stomps off, then comes back out, asking her mother why she would have pressured Do Kyung, especially since the reason why Hae Young ha invited Do Kyung over in the first place had been so her parents wouldn’t be embarrassed. She stalks off crying and is still crying when Do Kyung calls her. When Do Kyung asks her what happened, Hae Young tells him the half truth that her mother had beaten her for lying about being at Hee Ran’s. When Do Kyung tells her not to cry, Hae Young lies that her mother is looking at her and hangs up. Alone in her bed, she tries to comfort herself with the words Do Kyung had told her in the hospital about realizing that a moment means nothing when one thinks back about it at the time of death and so they should go all the way. Morning sees Hae Young meeting with Hee Ran to eat chicken and beer (hahahaha. Plus the marriage not dating soundtrack to boot. Ha PD-nim. How we love you and your marriage not dating references). Her sudden depressed mood has Hee Ran asking what’s wrong and Hae Young wonders why she lowers herself in her relationship even to the point of not caring that she might be the one who loves more in the relationship. Hee Ran wonders why love must always come with marriage in Hae Young’s mind and Hae Young answers that that’s how she’s basically wired. She’s so disturbed by the matter that when she notices Do Kyung calling her, she ignores his call. Do Kyung doesn’t get the chance to think about the ignored calls for long however as he notices a seizure notice that his mother tries but fails to hide. Turns out she’d taken a loan and used Do Kyung’s office as a collateral (why that bitch! What the…). Even as she tries to find her way through explaining things to Do Kyung, Do Kyung just tells her to not bother doing anything about it and leaves. He heads straight to Hae Young’s house where he questions about her ignoring his calls. She answers that she’s mad at him because he doesn’t love her 100% like she loves him, and him claiming otherwise doesn’t dissuade her. When she makes to leave, he asks her for a hug and Hae Young leans in to hug him but she doesn’t huh him wholeheartedly, and stomps off to her house, leaving Do Kyung looking bereft.
9. Jin Sang and Soo Kyung kiss
When Soo Kyung realizes that Jin Sang still can’t kiss her, she tries to get him to leave the house with the explanation that if he doesn’t see her enough as a woman he wants to kiss, then there’s no way they can be expected to act like a married couple. When Jin Sang asks her if she can kiss him, Soo Kyung tells him that she thinks she can. Her certainty takes them outside where Jin Sang attempts to kiss her again, but can’t quite get himself to do it. After a long, long moment of attempting to kiss, Soo Kyung finally pushes Jin Sang away and tells him that she understands his reluctance in not kissing her and so he should go. But seeing her walk away seems to snap something in Jin Sang as he walks up to her, dips her and kisses her (wow. See Jin Sang? You can kiss her after all).
10. Do Kyung wants to live
After leaving Hae Young’s house, and well aware of the fact that he’s pulling back from giving her his all because he’s scared of dying, Do Kyung heads over to Tae Jin’s apartment to ask the latter to take anything he wants to take away from him, as long as he lets Do Kyung live. Tae Jin, holding a drink in his hand asks Do Kyung to come inside as there are CCTV cameras in the hallway. In the room, Tae Jin starts to beat Do Kyung, all the while telling him an analogy of someone kicking him in the shins to bring him down whilst Tae Jin is wearing his favorite suit and then apologizing that it was a mistake, only for the person to turn around and take his suit from him (I repeat Tae Jin. No one took Hae Young from you. She is a person not an object. Her decisions are hers and hers alone. Like seriously dude, drop the drink and get some sense. Yeesh). When the only thing Do Kyung can say at the end of the story is that Tae Jin should spare his life, Tae Jin proceeds to beat him up (I do hope Tae Jin is prepared to get himself beat up as well by the time he finds out that Do Kyung isn’t actually the one responsible for his business going down the toilet). Hae Young though can’t sleep and she ends up calling Do Kyung to apologize, let him know that she can’t sleep because she misses him, and to invite him over. Do Kyung who is bloody and bruised tells her that he can’t come. The words has Hae Young crying and Do Kyung finds himself walking to her house as he asks himself if when he’s dying he would regret having not been honest and hurting Hae Young’s feelings, just like Tae Jin had. He asks himself if he should tell her the truth now, that he might die soon, and wonders if they can still be as happy as they are now, once Hae Young learns the truth. Hae Young cries the minute she sees Do Kyung’s bruises and cuts and asks who did it to him. Do Kyung though just pulls her into a hug and tells her that he expects as much with what he did to Tae Jin (no. You shouldn’t. Because you’re not a masochist and Tae Jin has no right beating you up like that. If you showed anyone else all your bruises and explain the entire situation, no sane person would agree with what Tae Jin is doing. Instead, they will tell you that Tae Jin is no longer sane). He continues that he’s willing to endure it all including his business failing and him getting beaten and tells Hae Young that she mustn’t go see Tae Jin (someone has to go see him soon though. To tell him he’s being an utter jackass). He apologizes for not coming to the wedding, saying that he has his reasons, but reassures her that he loves her 100% and not 89% like she thinks. Back in her room, Hae Young cries as she wishes and prays that none of them: herself, Do Kyung or Tae Jin would continue to having an aching heart, whilst Do Kyung, running along the bridge says he wants Hae Young to be happier. As he runs, he has a vision of his death where this time around, he can clearly see Tae Jin in a car chasing after him.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because any mother who would use her son’s office as a collateral for a loan, all without telling him about it deserves to be slapped. The fact that she kept it a secret until the seizure notice was sent to Do Kyung makes me want to bitchslap her so hard that she sees stars. Like seriously though, what the hell is wrong with this woman?!
Headache inducing moment:
Because although I know why Do Kyung is doing what he’s doing, I’m also aware that Tae Jin at the moment is an alcoholic with violent tendencies, meaning he can just as easily beat Do Kyung to death in that room and no one would be any the wiser. Or to make matters worse, he could easily beat Do Kyung blue, black and indigo in the room and still set out to harm him later on. Like seriously, Tae Jin’s behaving like a self-entitled prick and Do Kyung’s encouraging him which just gives me a migraine.
This episode’s a shot of whiskey that burns on its way down. Sure it’s filled with warmth and happy moments for our couples, but it’s still somewhat painful to deal with, especially when you consider everything Do Kyung is going through. And Tae Jin’s alcohol and physical abuse just has me rubbing my aching head at how wrong it all is. Cripes, someone get that guy a shrink fast.
