Sometimes just giving the viewers a taste of what the beginning of the end will look like, is enough. Moo Myeong comes back to Goongnakwon and makes his play. Yeo Kyung pitches her tent and there’s no going back. Tae Ha has to stand up to the only other father figure he has and Moo Myeong makes a depressing discovery with regards to his noodle making skills.
Top 10 Moments:
- Tae Ha saves his friends
Gil Do thankfully, doesn’t attack Moo Myeong with the dropped rolling pin. Instead, he hands it over to Moo Myeong but takes special care to let Moo Myeong know that although he sees Moo Myeong’s end and he knows it’s near, things wouldn’t end the way Moo Myeong wants them too. He lives a furious Moo Myeong who is thankfully able to hold it all in, until Gil Do leaves, and who then breaks down in tears as he remembers his parents burning to death. Da Hae sees him crying but doesn’t interrupt, and instead chooses to leave without encroaching on Moo Myeong’s pain. Gil Do on the other hand asks Tae Ha what Tae Ha would do if he has his suspicions and no proof. Tae Ha spins it around that he too had had his suspicions about Gil Do; thought that maybe it was Gil Do that had given his father the order to kill, especially with how suspiciously nice Gil Do was and how it seemed like Gil Do just kept wanting to draw closer to him. He ends it that he’s happy now that he gave Gil Do a chance rather than giving into his suspicions (see Tae Ha? It’s instances like this that you show that you still consider Moo Myeong a friend). They’re still having the conversation when one of the congressman whose money Gil Do had laundered for him, calls that he heard Gil Do was served with a search warrant and wants his money back. Gil Do then calls Dokku who is in hiding with the money and whilst Dokku puts aside the congressman’s dough, he smells something rotting and discovers that one of the boxes of cash is actually filled with apples. To make it all worse, the Gil Young who is cleaning the storage finds the box of cash and just as he’s wheeling it out of the storage, runs into Gil Do who asks him who he is and what he’s doing in the area to which Tae Ha answers that Gil Young is probably cleaning up the storage area as per post burial orders Gil Do is just about to press further when he gets a call and gwalks away (whew! Saving two friends in one night. You are awesome Tae Ha!).
2. Yeo Kyung is playing a very dangerous game
Based on instructions he’d previously received from Yeo Kyung, Gil Young wheels her the cash he’d found and Yeo Kyung comforts him by saying that it’s like he handed over evidence to the police. Whilst bemoaning the fact that all that’s in the boxes are untraceable cash notes instead of cheques that they can work with, the inspector attached to Yeo Kyung laughs as she provides her with a bunch of cheques that would serve just as well. Yeo Kyung then meets with Congressman So Tae Sub to tell him that she’s found something she can use to nab Dokku and Gil Do to which the congressman smiles even as he tells her that she mustn’t touch Goongnak Foundation. When Yeo Kyung asks as to the congressman’s insistence on Goongnak Foundation, So Tae Sub tells her that she could easily lose her way to which Yeo Kyung answers that she already knows there’s no way out. The answer pleases So Tae Sub who tells her that as a politician, it’s always important to know your opponents’ weakness and since a lot of politicians are tied up in the scheme, him getting control of the Foundation means that he has a hold on their weakness.
3. Moo Myeong returns to Goongnakwon
An order for a rare type of noodle is made and the deputy head of noodles is stumped as the one person he knows that can make it: Dae Chun, made the dish about twenty years prior. Da Hae knows of the dish and offers to try making it. But when she’s asked how long it would take to prepare and she mentions 30 minutes, Moo Myeong comes in to say that it would take an hour for the meal to be ready. He takes over, easy breezy, explaining the process of making the noodles, not like Da Hae is interested in the lecture as she asks why he’s back when he quit his job. He informs her that he would be at Goongnakwon three days in a week and his new title is now: Top Head of Noodles (in other words, Gil Do’s successor). Everyone is pissed at his guts although the former deputy head of noodles assistant is willing to follow Moo Myeong’s instructions so he can learn and not have to resort to cheating again. The side dishes crew storm off because one of the cooks reminds the head of side dishes that they might hate Moo Myeong but they have customers to serve, whilst leaving Moo Myeong with the deputy head of noodles and Da Hae who he explains to that he couldn’t tell them the exact reason why he had to leave, and so he fought really hard to be back in the kitchen. None of them say anything to him however, but just leave to get their work done. After the noodles is ready, Da Hae asks that Moo Myeong follow her to meet the elderly couple who ordered the meal and who are most proficient with their thanks (something tells me she did it because Moo Myeong said he’s not at Goongnakwon for the noodles and she’s trying to bring him back to that state where he cooks noodles for others to enjoy. Listen to her Moo Myeong. Your father was like that as well).
4. Moo Myeong tells Da Hae the truth
After meeting Seol Mi Ja’s hateful eyes, Moo Myeong meets with Da Hae outside the main restaurant where Da Hae tells him that she is focused on the noodles as opposed to Moo Myeong who is only at Goongnakwon in order to defeat Gil Do. When she calls Moo Myeong out to tell the truth, Moo Myeong does and holds nothing back. Starting from the fact that he’s in Goongnakwon, doing everything he can to survive because he wants to avenge his parents who were killed by Gil Do. And that is why he has lied to her and manipulated events all so he can pull it off. He adds that she wanted to know the whole truth and now that he’s told her, he actually feels extremely relieved and tells her the the ball is now in her court as she is the one to decide whose side she would be on, in order to truly benefit Goongnakwon.
5. Moo Myeong makes an offer
Done with his conversations with Da Hae, Moo Myeong heads to Seol Mi Ja and Gang Sook next where the former is all chomping at the bits not to hear a word from his lying traitorous mouth whilst the latter is surprisingly the calmer one as she tells Moo Myeong to state the offer he’s making. Moo Myeong’s suggestion of blowing Gil Do out of the water catches their attention as does what he says next that all their shares, plus Da Hae’s 20% is enough to have Gil Do replaced with Moo Myeong in which case Moo Myeong would hand over the management rights to Gang Sook (huh? But why don’t I still trust you Moo Myeong? Your ass is shady. Gil Do level shady), and Seol Mi Ja would head Goongnak Foundation. The idea interests Seol Mi Ja, but her problem is the fact that victory lies with Da Hae tossing her shares in the hat and she’s not sure how Moo Myeong intends to convince her (something tells me it has to do with that ‘confession’ he just laid on her before coming to meet you guys). Moo Myeong replies that he’s laid the foundation and the rest is left to Da Hae. Gang Sook who is well aware that there’s already the highest probability of her losing the management rights anyway is most inclined to the plan and turns to Seol Mi Ja for her opinion. Seol Mi Ja also agrees because she feels things can’t get any worse anyway (woman, never attempt to jinx yourself. Things can always get worse. Also, why isn’t anybody asking Moo Myeong what he stands to gain from everything? Like seriously! Someone ask him).
6. Dokku says his goodbyes
With the prosecution hot on his trail for money laundering, and facing a long long time in prison, Dokku makes sure to remind Gil Do, who had him follow him to a private bank to deposit all the laundered cash, that should Gil Do backstab him, things would get really messy. Next Dokku tries calling Da Hae, but she’s still distraught about Moo Myeong’s bombshell and doesn’t notice her phone ringing, meaning Dokku has to sneak into Goongnakwon where he hands her documents to help her access a bank account where he’d been saving money for her wedding (awwww. Dokku. Please don’t die). He tells Da Hae that he’s going on the run and might not be able to reach out to her, and at the same time, he doesn’t want her reaching out to him either. When Da Hae wails about him just living a normal life, he tells her that it’s impossible for him and when Da Hae accuses Gil Do of being the one responsible for Dokku’s life on the run, Dokku simply tells her that Gil Do makes everyone around him miserable and so Da Hae should run as far away as possible from her father (I wish she would listen to you but I doubt that). Da Hae then hands him the puppy token he’d given her and tells him to stay healthy whilst Dokku asks for one last hug and takes off, all the while telling himself that he won’t go back to prison (please do not kill yourself Dokku. Do not! Da Hae wouldn’t be able to handle it and I don’t think Tae Ha will fare well either).
7. Yeo Kyung pitches her tent
Yeo Kyung’s investigator gets back to her that the person who had issued the cheques found with the stash of cash from Goongnakwon is Congressman Choi. Yeo Kyung immediately calls Congressman Choi who lies that he has a parliament meeting and would get back to her boss, only to have his driver turn right around to Goongnakwon where he talks to Gil Do who assures him that he would strike at the tail to get everything to come to a halt (is the tail Yeo Kyung or Dokku I wonder?). Just after Yeo Kyung has finished having a conversation with her investigator who had warned her about possibly getting hurt thanks to the case, Gil Do places a call to Yeo Kyung to come meet with him at Goongnakwon and fearless Yeo Kyung does just that. When Yeo Kyung tries to ensure that her meeting with Gil Do is private, Gil Do insists on Tae Ha staying as he introduces Tae Ha to Yeo Kyung as the son of her father’s murderer. When that doesn’t sway Yeo Kyung, he offers her a seat then pulls out his pen and asks her how she knew the pen was the access into his secret room. Tae Ha swallows but Yeo Kyung recovers just fine as she answers that it’s something she’s seen used commonly by criminals: hiding their secret room and getting access to it by using pens, lighters and even rings. That done, Yeo Kyung goes straight to the reason why she’s there. She will find a way to link Congressman Choi and Dokku to Goongnak Foundation and ultimately Gil Do unless he cuts off the tail which would prevent him from going down with them. When Gil Do asks exactly how Yeo Kyung suggests he cut the tail, Yeo Kyung asks him for evidence linking Congressman So Tae Sub to her parent’s murder because if Gil Do can’t offer her that evidence, then their conversation is meaningless. Except, Gil Do actually does have evidence, but he has no intention of handing it over to Yeo Kyung until she accepts a bribe from him, thus dirtying her hands and ensuring that she can’t come around and stab him in the back (Smart Gil Do. Very smart). He tells Yeo Kyung that should she take the bribe, he would also give up Dokku’s location (you backstabbing rat!). When Yeo Kyung asks how she would know that the evidence is valuable, Gil Do tells her that the evidence is a report written by her father pointing out Congressman So Tae Sub as involved in the defense industry corruption, but her father was forcefully dismissed before he could report it. When her father, then a professor had attempted to hand it over to the US Federal Court, he was murdered. He tells her that So Tae Sub’s name was mentioned 384 times in the report and tells her to choose a side. Yeo Kyung picks up the evidence and the bribe money, even though Tae Ha’s eyes are screaming at her not to do so, and Gil Do smiles as he tells her that she must either deposit the money into her bank account or spend it all that day, as that is when he will hand over Dokku’s whereabouts to her. Yeo Kyung catches her breath in her car and is there when Tae Ha meets her and tells her that they have to chat. When they’re somewhere private, Tae Ha lambasts her for handing over her lifeline to Gil Do but Yeo Kyung doesn’t care because now she knows her parents’ murderer and she is now for the first time making decisions for herself, unlike when she became a prosecutor and when she started looking into Tae Ha’s father’s case which she had done for both Moo Myeong and Tae Ha. Even Tae Ha going to jail on her behalf had been his choice, not hers but now she’s taken matters into her own hands. And then she throws Tae Ha’s words back into his face that friendship means nothing (no.no.no. Don’t say that. This is not good. Why are you all fractured?! You should be coming together to take down Gil Do, not becoming fractured like this) and tells him that he should look after himself as it looks like he is the one in danger. And with those words, she walks away.
8. Yeo Kyung plays both sides
When Yeo Kyung holds up to her end of the bargain by depositing the money and sending him the picture of the deposit slip, Gil Do texts her Dokku’s address and Yeo Kyung immediately texts the address to her investigator and tells her to head there as she would join them shortly. Dokku who rightfully suspects that he’s been betrayed calls Gil Do to promise him that he would kill him (and I most certainly hope that you do). Gil Do visibly looks affected as Dokku puts the call on speakerphone so Gil Do can hear when the cops and the prosecutor come for him and then he ends the call (Dokku, please don’t do anything stupid. Please). Gil Do has Tae Ha arrange for as many men as possible to gather whilst Dokku successfully evades the investigators, although Yeo Kyung’s investigator asks Yeo Kyung if she purposefully let Dokku get away. It’s a question that Yeo Kyung claims is preposterous (although I wonder if it’s not actually valid) and then Yeo Kyung suggests that they head back to the office. Nighttime has Yeo Kyung meeting Congressman So Tae Sub at their secret hangout where the congressman also can’t believe that Yeo Kyung couldn’t capture Dokku. Yeo Kyung just apologizes, to which the congressman reminds her that she needs to suppress Gil Do for the congressman to be able to get what he wants and she can’t do that now that she doesn’t have Dokku. Yeo Kyung’s answer though is that if the congressman can provide her with evidence that Gil Do is involved with her father’s murder case, then she can use that evidence to suppress him (A-ha. Playing both sides are we Yeo Kyung. It’s risky but can be rewarding if it all pans out). When So Tae Sub asks if she’s suspecting him, Yeo Kyung admits to knowing that her father wasn’t the congressman’s aide-de-camp. So Tae Sub admits to loving Yeo Kyung’s father (yeah right), but also admits that Park Moo Taek (Tae Ha’s father) worked for Gil Do. Yeo Kyung is clearly surprised but turns around to ask So Tae Sub why he had her father murdered (what the what?! Why the hell are you asking him that Yeo Kyung?! Shouldn’t you be keeping it a secret till you’re ready to strike?). So Tae Sub just smiles as he replies that Gil Do is just trying to frame him, because of their enmity that dates back 30 years. Yeo Kyung actually looks like she’s considering the words (you’re turning into a yo-yo Yeo Kyung. Make up your damn mind already).
9. Gil Do loses his position
Gil Do is awaken from sleep by Tae Ha who informs him that the Moon elder is around to see him. The meeting has Gang Sook, Seol Mi Ja, Moo Myeong, Da Hae, the Moon elder and Gil Do in attendance, with the Moon elder asking Gil Do to sign the document naming Moo Myeong as his successor whilst Moo Myeong would sign a document stating that he wouldn’t open his own restaurant and serve dishes made with Goongnakwon’s recipe. Both men sign their respective documents and Gil Do, thinking that that’s all makes to leave. The Moon elder isn’t done though as he brings up the motion to dismiss the current Master of Noodles (i.e. Gil Do), who is shocked at this sudden proclamation. Da Hae too is shocked, although the rest are not. When Seol Mi Ja mentions the fact that the Master of Noodles can be dismissed if he’s found guilty of committing damaging actions against Goognakwon, Gil Do, not taking the matter lying down asks when he’s committed such an offense to which the Moon elder lists out his sabotage of Goongnakwon, him moving Moo Myeong to another restaurant, the search and seizure that took place in the restaurant and also Gil Do’s foray into politics which have all dishonored Goongnakwon. The Moon elder calls the matter to a vote and he, Seol Mi Ja, and Gang Sook all vote for Gil Do’s removal, making Da Hae the deciding vote. She takes a couple of minutes to herself to think about it and then says she will make her decision, but first Gil Do must answer her question as to who the new dishwasher is. Gil Do who recalls meeting Gil Young blanks out as he tries to remember even as Da Hae tells him that Dae Chun who was in a comma for six years remembered everybody’s name, just like a true Master of Noodles should. She turns to the Moon elder and gives her support in the dismissal of Gil Do (oh, that’s good. Very good! Is this how satisfied I will feel when everything comes tumbling down for you Gil Do because I love this feeling. Love it!). Even as Gil Do is dealing with the blow, the Moon elder also reminds him that seeing as the Master of Noodles of Goongnakwon is always the Director of Goongnak Foundation, now that Gil Do is no longer Master of Noodles, Seol Mi Ja will be acting Director of Goongnak Foundation. Gil Do of course doesn’t leave the gathering without leaving a word of warning to everyone gathered that he would make sure they realize how their split second decision can change their lives.
10. The monster awakens
Whilst Da Hae tells Moo Myeong that the only reason why she voted as she did was because she hopes Goongnakwon would become that place of refuge again where the love for noodles unites them all, and Moo Myeong tells Da Hae that he thinks she’s the only one that can pull it off (I think so too Moo Myeong), Gil Do is slowly getting wasted in his office as he first asks if Tae Ha thinks he can take out Dokku when Dokku comes calling for Gil Do. Tae Ha replies that he can (no Tae Ha. Da Hae will never be able to forgive you. You will never be able to forgive you) and Gil Do says that whilst Tae Ha has always feared the blood of a murderer flowing through his veins, he on the other hand has always tried to keep the monster in him at bay. But the monster is now attempting to rise, a monster the likes of which no one has ever seen. At the thought, Gil Do begins to laugh and Tae Ha looks positively chilled. Whilst Moo Myeong starts to panic as he realizes that he can’t taste anything anymore (Wait what? When did that happen? Is it poison? Is it Gil Do?), Do Kyung arrives at Goongnakwon, beating his way through the myriad of bodyguards protecting Gil Do, till he gets to Tae Ha. Tae Ha unfortunately, refuses to move as his loyalty is now to Gil Do, and although he puts up a good fight, he’s no match for Dokku who walks up to Gil Do and asks him if he’d built his soundproof office to not only kill people but to himself be killed there. Gil Do says nothing though, just smiles.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
I know that we have 4 more episodes and you don’t think you will die just yet, but still it doesn’t mean that you should be this reckless Yeo Kyung. Calling out someone that even Gil Do, the monster himself, fears is a bad move girl, bad move. What the hell are you thinking?
Headache inducing moment:
Because it was not until this moment that I realize how much I really really like Dokku and I started praying and hoping that he would survive it and not die because his vehemence about not going back to prison gave me a very very bad feeling. Please don’t die Dokku.
This episode is multiple shots of Vodka, straight and had hitting. We’re racing along to the grand finale and the battle of all battles amongst all our character. Everyone is spinning their web till the strings are super strong and it all translates into energy and explosive power that burns. But Gil Do is a monster and thinking of the consequences everyone would now face now that Gil Do has 4 episodes to bring destruction (remembering that he destroyed everyone’s lives in just the 1st episode alone), already has me having the hangover to beat all Russian vodka hangovers. Damn this is going to hurt.
