The best people not to piss off, are the quiet ones. Jung Ah gets started on her revenge and Choong Nam vows to kill her former friends. Nan Hee’s all smiles now that she has the weight off her shoulders and Wan promises Yeon Ha that she will return. Hee Ja’s falling into a pleasant companionship, although Min Ho is not in full support. And Seok Gyun is still in denial, although the reality should set in soon.
Top 10 Moments:
- Nan Hee’s happy
Upon getting home, Nan Hee walks over to the musician’s convenience store, where she finds him strumming a song on his guitar. Her applause alerts the man to her presence, and soon they’re both talking about their widowed lives and how he has a son in university whilst Nan Hee who initially started her story by saying she’s alone, admits to having a daughter almost turned 40, parents and a younger brother. And then she smiles, the happiest she’s looked in a long while, followed by a laugh as she admits to not being alone after all. The musician starts to play another song and Nan Hee listens wistfully, which is probably what she’s feeling when she calls Wan to ask her if she really thinks Jung Ah would get a divorce from Seok Gyun. Wan says she thinks Jung Ah would just do it for revenge but wouldn’t go all the way with it, and then hangs up when her mother wants to keep talking because she is at the airport about to board a plan to go see Yeon Ha. With Wan off the phone, Nan Hee can concentrate on packing what they need to help Jung Ah clean her apartment, and the bottle of wine she’s sharing with Choong Nam who grumbles at being made the crazy person when she learns that the supposed affair between Wan and Dong Jin was a misunderstanding. Nan Hee adds though that it was fun to scream and pull each other’s hair our and asks Choong Nam if she thinks Wan meant it when she said she hates Nan Hee. Nan Hee comforts herself that Wan wouldn’t have but Choong Nam reminds her that kids hate their parents and Nan Hee had hated her mother at some point. Thinking of this has Nan Hee laughing even more brightly (Wow. You look even more radiant now that you’ve rid yourself of the poison of guilt Nan Hee. Happy looks good on you) and then she confides in Choong Nam that she’s interested in dating a man who is 10 years younger than her. Choong Nam, still being the awesome friend that she is cheers her on.
2. Hee Ja and Seong Jae have a sharing of heart
The downpour reduces to a light drizzle as Hee Ja and Seong Jae watch the skies whilst eating roasted sweet potato and brushing the crumbs off each other’s cheek. When Seong Jae tries to use the moment to take Hee Ja down the memory lane about them doing it to each other when they were younger, Hee Ja nips it in the bud by saying she used to do it for her late husband as well (Hahaha. Way to ruin the romantic mood Hee Ja). Back in their room, separated by Seong Jae’s night bag, they talk about their significant others, with Hee Ja admitting that her husband was a good man, save for the one time he’d cheated on her, and Seong Jae saying that he was only good to his wife after she’d fallen ill. He tells Hee Ja that husbands only grow up when their wives get sick. Hee Ja calls the husbands exactly what they are: morons (Hehehe. Oh how I love you Hee Ja). When talks move on to the happiest and saddest days in Hee Ja’s life, she answers that the day her eldest son was born was her happiest day and her saddest was the day he died of a fever. Her husband hadn’t been around and she’d carried her boy all the way to the hospital only to be told when she got there that he was already dead and so, she’d walked aimlessly with her dead son down a path of trees. The memory saddens and tires her out, and Hee Ja lays down, saying that she doesn’t fear death as with it she would be reunited with her husband and those she misses. The next morning, they walk up the mountain to catch the sunrise, and the view is so beautiful that not only does Hee Ja thank Seong Jae for bringing her, she also holds out her hands for him to hold (Sweet progress).
3. Jung Ah continues to plan her revenge
Starting with packing her bags, late at night whilst Seok Gyun is sleeping. When he startles awake mid-pack, she rubs his back till he falls back asleep and then resumes her packing (Hahaha. Jung Ah you amazing woman you). Seok Gyun is of course unaware of it all, which is why when Seong Jae overhears Hee Ja talking on the phone about it, on their way back from their trip, he is stunned. Hee Ja however tells him to keep his mouth quiet about it, which is why Seok Gyun is still unawares when he and his family (Jung Ah and their two daughters) are at the marketplace. He continues to pull his lord of the manor act, putting produce in a cart, shopping for different supplies, and having Jung Ah be the one to push the cart, even though his daughters keep calling him out on it and telling him to push the cart himself, and to not put her through so much work and then having her cook for his parents memorial service as well. Jung Ah though tells them not to worry about it as this would be the last day, secretly smiling to herself as she knows she will be leaving his ass soon anyway. Across town, Choong Nam, Nan Hee and Young Won are at Jung Ah’s new apartment, cleaning it up for her in preparation for when she’s ready to move in. As they clean, they talk about Young Won not seeing her ex husband (Nan Hee) and meeting him for tea if she wants to (Choong Nam). Nan Hee pauses for a moment to ask Young Won if Wan really did break up with Yeon Ha. Young Won just looks away saying she should think so, whilst Nan Hee mutters that Wan can’t marry a disabled person as it’s the same as dating a married person to her (it’s back to being about you huh Nan Hee?)
4. Yeon Ha plays hard to get
Unknown to Nan Hee and Yeon Ha, Wan has arrived in Slovenia to see Yeon Ha. As the taxi drives her to his apartment, she sees phantoms of herself and Yeon Ha, having fun around the town, and smiles, then nervously fidgets at the sights. Stopping to pick up a bouquet of roses, she continues the rest of the journey on foot. She presses the doorbell and smiles, expecting to see Yeon Ha, but instead is faced with his sister Yeon Hee who asks Wan what she’s doing there. Finally taking note of Wan’s bags, she lets her in, and whilst Wan takes a moment to note all the pictures of herself and Yeon Ha which is scattered all over the room, Yeon Hee explains that her brother is still asleep. Except, when Wan turns, it’s to find Yeon Ha with a not happy expression, looking across the room at her. He asks his sister to excuse them for a moment. Alone, Wan runs to meet Yeon Ha, excited, but her face falls when she notices his expression, and she asks if that’s the welcome she gets after not having seen him for three years and haven flown for 18 hours straight. Yeon Ha just asks her if she’s eaten and offers her tea. When Wan tells him that she thought he would be so pleased he would even faint, Yeon Ha replies that he’s pleased, with the most unpleased expression on his face. Just as Wan points out that he’s treating her like an unwanted guest, Yeon Ha replies that he really is happy to see her (you don’t look it though), so happy in fact that he could jump up. He looks at her for a bit, and then his face dissolves into a smile as he tells her that she has a nosebleed. Wan confirms it for herself then yells that of course she would, she had a fight with her mother, worked for three days straight all so she could make it and yet here he was acting like he didn’t want her there. She stomps off into the bathroom to cry, whilst Yeon Ha laughs, only to notice that all her things are still there, arranged like she never even left (Awww Yeon Ha. You were waiting for her weren’t you?) Back outside, as she cries and asks him why he was so cold, Yeon Ha tearfully motions to her to come to him and then hugs her. He pulls back to dry her tears and then kisses her (Awwwww).
5. Min Ho meets Seong Jae
Still worried about Seok Gyun and equally worried about the onset of Hee Ja’s dementia, Seong Jae pays a visit to Hee Ja, with a coloring book and crayons in hand. Hee Ja accepts the gifts but refuses to talk about Seok Gyun, so Seong Jae sets to showing her the gifts, telling her that the drawing and coloring should help her fight dementia (cute), and going out of his way to teach her the tricks of coloring. He’s in the midst of it when Min Ho walks into his mother’s house and glares, asking Hee Ja who Seong Jae is. Hee Ja does the introduction, falling over her words as she makes sure to insist that he’s an old friend and everyone of her friends know him as well. Min Ho though just stays silently judging like an overprotective father (Hahaha) and Seong Jae feeling the censure attempts to make nice with Min Ho. Min Ho’s not having it though and Seong Jae leaves. Still acting like a jealous husband, Min Ho bins the snacks Seong Jae had bought for Hee Ja and then shouts at Hee Ja to leave the snacks when she tries to retrieve them (Min Ho, stop being a jerk face of a son).
6. Hee Ja’s memory is failing her
Min Ho and Hee Ja head off to buy bedding for Jung Ah’s new place, and Hee Ja is excited as she knocks on the window bars of the basement apartment (Oh Hee Ja, wrong house), calling for Jung Ah. When the actual tenant opens up and snaps at her for bugging him, Hee Ja starts to panic as she realizes that she doesn’t remember where Jung Ah’s new house is. Even Min Ho telling her that he loves her is not enough to calm her down. Min Ho ends up calling Jung Ah to ask for directions whilst Hee Ja continues to mumble to herself.
7. Reality sets in
After spending 52 hours being cooped up indoors, Yeon Ha is ready to head outside, although Wan just wants to stay indoors. When Yeon Ha asks her when she’s heading back to Seoul, it’s a question she doesn’t even want to consider though she has booked her flight. Yeon Hee calls and tells her brother that she hopes he’s aware that Wan isn’t there to stay permanently: she has a mother and is an only child, meaning she would be going back. Yeon Ha looks sad as he tells his sister he knows, and when Wan joins him, he asks her once again when her flight to Seoul is, to which she finally replies that it’s in 7 hours. Considering the time they have left, Yeon Ha asks to go on a walk with her and whilst there Wan fills him in on Dong Jin going back to the States to be with his wife and her deciding to publish a book about her mother’s friends. Their walk ends with them drinking tea together and Wan telling Yeon Ha that she would pack her stuff after she’s done with the book. Yeon Ha stops her from making any promises though, and tells her that he would just assume she missed Slovenia and that was why she came. When Wan tries to explain that that wasn’t her reason, Yeon Ha stops her by telling her that she’s impulsive and she likes him, which is why she flew over, but she should let this be the last time (Ouch!). When Wan asks if he would wait for her, he simply replies that he would be there but tells Wan not to promise to come and then not be able to come as it’s then that he would start to hate his legs and hold them responsible for him losing her. Wan shuts him up by telling him that she’s not impulsive. Rather, she came over because she loves hm, to which Yeon Ha asks if he should be thankful then, that she loves him in spite of his disability. She replies that he should be thankful and he wonders how he should be thankful when she left when she wanted, came back when she wanted and would leave again. When Wan still insists that he should thank and Yeon Ha is still fixated on not thanking her, Wan makes to leave, then stops, then sits right back down. She tells him that she would come back to him, regardless of what her mother says as it’s what she’d decided before flying over to come and see him. Plus she doesn’t want to be seeing him through the screen of her laptop or phone anymore. She also adds that when she comes back, she wants to see him living harder than he’s doing at the moment, building his upper body strength and exercising his legs. When Yeon Ha shouts that he’s doing all that, Wan smiles as she tells him that he’d better, seeing that he is to live with her, especially considering the fact that her uncle who was bedridden for seven years can now walk. Sure he drags a food behind him, but he can walk and Yeon Ha must do the same, because he is to live with her. When Yeon Ha tells her that he can’t walk again, Wan tells him that he can’t only do the things he can, he can do the things he can’t as well. She begs him to give her a cause to be able to tell her mother that Yeon Ha has a stronger will than anyone else when her mother insists that she can’t marry a disabled person, and then breaks down in tears. The words finally gets through to Yeon Ha, who smiles, then tells her that if she fails to return to him, he would kill her (Awww. You hear that Wan? You must come back. Must come back!). He holds her hands and tells her to go when his sister honks outside the restaurant, there to take Wan back to the airport. Wan leaves but comes back to give him a quick kiss on the cheek and Yeon Ha tearfully watches her leave. In the car, Wan tells Yeon Hee to make sure Yeon Ha goes to a rehabilitation center and promises her that she really would return. Yeon Hee smiles as she says they will wait for her then (You hear that Wan? They’re waiting for you. You must come back. You must!)
8. Choong Nam is unwell and no one’s there to help
Whilst serving her opportunistic artist friends, Choong Nam feels the beginning of stomach pangs and wonders if she has diarrhea but doesn’t say anything. Back at home, after using the toilet for yet another time, Choong Nam who suddenly looks even more frail than normal (brilliant job with that shot PD), doesn’t feel too good and starts to psych herself up not to panic, even though she admits that it’s become an emergency. She calls her nephews for help but the two of them are at a noraebang with their friends and they don’t see or hear their phones ring. Next she calls Young Won whose assistant picks up the call to inform her that she’s at a shoot. Nan Hee can’t hear her phone cuz it’s busy at her restaurant, serving her customers. She calls her artists-friends next, and professor Park lies that he has to go pick up his kids, whilst telling the other professor not to pick up her calls saying that she sounds fine, and besides, she has her nephews (You Assholes! Assholes!!!). Choong Nam decides not to call Hee Ja because Hee Ja’s too old, and Jung Ah because Jung Ah’s at her in-laws memorial service. With no one else to reach out to, Choong Nam decides to get dressed and then call 911. Except, she faints just as she reaches her wardrobe, with her phone in her hand, dialing Nan Hee’s mother. Everyone begins to panic, from Nan Hee’s mother who rides her tractor to come and see Choong Nam, to Seong Jae who hops into his car to rush to her, to Wan who rushes in from the airport (people, hurry please, Choong Nam can’t die. She can’t die). But it is Grandmother who gets there first, and calls the ambulance who rushes Choong Nam to the hospital whilst Grandmother can only look at her worriedly.
9. Jung Ah leaves
Unaware of what is going on with Choong Nam, Jung Ah uses Seok Gyun’s excuse that women shouldn’t be inside the house with the ‘men’ when the latter are paying their respect to the dead, to step out of the house with her bags in tow. She’s met by her daughters who are also outside because they’re female and they wonder what’s in her bag. She replies that she’s leaving their father and they laugh, thinking she’s joking. When she tells them that they should take good care of their father, they laugh some more and tell Jung Ah to take care of him, as he is her husband after all. Whilst Seok Gyun is having his bath, post-memorial service, Jung Ah packs the rest of her clothes and leaves whilst Seok Gyun assumes she’s fast asleep (Hahaha. You’re going to be in a state of shock soon old man). He wakes up the next morning calling for Jung Ah, except, Jung Ah is sleeping peacefully in her new apartment, miles away from him.
10. Choong Nam’s fine and starts to plot her revenge
(And I’m here relieved and crying that she’s okay) Whilst Jung Ah is still asleep, unaware of what’s going on, Choong Nam wakes up in a hospital bed, surrounded by her true friends, Wan, Grandmother, Nan Hee, Young Won and Hee Ja, the latter who tells her that her surgery to take out her appendix was successful. They all tease her about bringing all of them over just because of her appendix and Grandmother demands that she must make it up to her for saving her life (awwwww). A text message for Choong Nam wakes Wan who had fallen asleep by her bedside and she hands Choong Nam her phone. Choong Nam reads the message which is from her artist-friends who had taken a picture of all of them, having fun without her. As Choong Nam stares at her ‘old’ friends who all came to be with her, and her ‘older’ relatives who are all in the same ward with her, showing concern about her health, Choong Nam decides to get revenge on the professor-artists she’d once thought of as her friends.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because honestly, your mother is old and your father is dead. You are married with a baby on the way. Stop being a jackass and let her have some fun and companionship. Besides, you are the one who wouldn’t come to the phone the night she had the fight with Jung Ah and was calling everyone to talk to them about it. So, be there for your family and let your mother have friends of her own.
Headache inducing Moment:
Oh how I screamed. Screamed and begged that she should get up. That someone should pick up the phone, someone should come to her. Choong Nam can’t die. I can’t deal with this. I can’t deal with this. Where the hell is everybody?!
This episode’s a cold dark lager satisfying in its intensity even as we ease back for more lighter moments and revenge galore from both Jung Ah and Choong Nam. Seriously, nothing beats a cold dark beer when revenge is about to be served as cold as you can get.
