The best way to get to the truth is to head straight into the heart of the matter. Soo Yong’s not quick to tell his son the truth and now he might never get that chance. Dae Chul keeps digging a hole for himself and his sister’s no different. Gong Mi remains annoying and obtuse. Dan Tae changes jobs. Gong Shim is at an impasse and Dan Tae finds an ally in the most unexpected place.
Top 10 Moments:
- Dan Tae finally talks to his dad whist Dae Chul meets with him
And the first thing his father does is to reiterate that he wasn’t the one that kidnapped Dan Tae but rather he saved him from the person who was out to kill him. When Dan Tae asks him who it was that kidnapped him and why, his father apologizes and tells him that he would tell him everything in person (no. Don’t tell him in person. Tell me right now. Over the phone. The present is the only time you can be certain off. Anything can happen!). When Dan Tae apologizes for having suspected him of the kidnap, his father can only muffle a cry as he apologizes, for waiting too long. He tells Dan Tae that after he’s told him the truth, he would pay for his crimes. On the other hand, Dae Chul’s contact feeds him Soo Yong’s exact location which is why whilst Soo Yong is moping, Dae Chul shows up to greet his old ‘friend’. Soo Yong tells Dae Chul not to worry, as he hasn’t spoken to anybody about what happened. But when Dae Chul mentions Dan Tae, Soo Yong surprised, lies that he hasn’t spoken to his son in ten years. Except, that very same son who is on his way to come and ‘talk’ to his father, calls, and Dae Chul who is with the phone sees the name. He begins to to struggle with Soo Yong, demanding that the latter tell him how much Dan Tae knows and in the process, pushes Soo Yong who hits his head against the park bench and falls unconscious. Meaning, by the time Dan Tae gets there, his father is lying on the ground with his ringing phone beside him and Dae Chul long gone. In the ambulance, Dan Tae notices the Star Group pin his father clutches in his hand and he’s stunned. He’s even more stunned when the doctor tells him that he has to worry more about his father’s tumor than the head injury and bruises and scratches his father had sustained during what was obviously a scuffle.
2. Dan Tae’s set on finding the person responsible for it all
With the pin in hand, Dan Tae deduces that the same person that kidnapped him was most likely the one who attempted to kill his father. Figuring out that the person must be in Star Group, Dan Tae decides that he would find the person himself, and so walks into Star Group the next morning, his smiling face a mask, as he chats with the workers he can see. Dae Chul who spots him afar concludes that Dan Tae mustn’t have any idea about what has happened to his father and takes a moment to wonder if the man is dead or alive; annoyed that he can’t say either way (you jackass). Dan Tae walks straight to the Grandmother’s office where he interrupts a meeting between her and Joon Soo’s father to tell her that he has money troubles and would therefore be really grateful if she could get him a paying job (smart Dan Tae. Smart).
3. Gong Mi is the idiot who thinks everyone else is an idiot
Whilst walking away from her office, Dan Tae spies Gong Mi who immediately takes off once she sees him and hears him calling for “Gong Shim’s sister”. Except, she slips and falls mid-run. Recovering quickly, she lies that she was in a hurry, which was why she didn’t hear him call her, and then tells him that because Gong Shim was fired on such bad terms, she hasn’t told anyone that she’s Gong Shim’s sister. Dan Tae whose eyes are screaming “you faking faker!” just smiles and tells her “oh so that’s how it is”. Gong Mi, the dimwit, smiles, thinking he’s just that stupid to buy her crap, and adds that Dan Tae should act like he doesn’t know her when others are around and he shouldn’t refer to her as Gong Shim’s sister. Dan Tae smiles as he says that he fully understands (hehehe) and tells her that it’s better for her to work up to telling everyone the truth soon, so she can work in peace. Gong Mi gives a fake smile that she will do so soon, and Dan Tae smiles as he walks away. Only to call her Gong Shim’s older sister, in an even louder tone of voice (hahaha) and ask her if she’s not curious as to why he’s in the building. He smiles as he says his best friend, Joon Soo is the heir to the whole company. With that piece of information dropped, he walks away with a smile. Gong Mi though is rattled, which is why she jumps when Joon Soo calls her name. Joon Soo though is there to apologize for not having had the time to meet with her since she started working at the company and invites her out to dinner. Gong Mi smiles (yuck! Girl, I don’t like you).
4. Gong Shim and Dan Tae the thief catchers
Gong Shim’s at home when one of her colleagues from the conservatory calls her to ask if she’s in Seoul. When Gong Shim agrees in the affirmative, the woman tells her to rush to the airport and hold onto the thieving Branch manager for the thirty minutes it would take for the employees to all get there (wait what? Do you really think Gong Shim can pull that off?). The request fills Gong Shim with fire as she runs out of the house. She runs into Dan Tae who she tells about the request and soon both of them are in a cab racing to catch the thief (Ha, now that can work. You alone just can’t pull it off Gong Shim no offense). When Gong Shim explains about the plan to hold the man for 30 minutes to delay him from traveling to China where he would have been lost to them all, Dan Tae asks the question we were all asking as to how on earth she expects to pull it off with her tiny frame, Gong Shim points to him being the muscle in the arrangement, after all that is why he’s in the car with her, heading to the airport. Once at the airport, Dan Tae hustles the man meeting the branch manager and takes the sign with the branch manager’s name from him, along with the passport and travel documents he was meant to hand over to said brand manager. So, when the brand manager arrives, it’s to Dan Tae he comes, and Dan Tae leads him to the parking lot, claiming that he forgot the documents in his car. He sends a message to Gong Shim with their location and when the branch manager’s phone rings, he notes the song, saying that so that’s the song Gong Shim was talking about. The name startles the branch manager, but he’s not able to escape before Gong Shim and all the employees descend on him. Gong Shim is so pleased that she gives Dan Tae a thumbs up and he responds by giving her a double wink. Hahaha.
5. Gong Shim’s ‘friends’ are not very nice either
Whilst Dan Tae is inside the supermarket, getting Gong Shim drawing tools as a way of saying thank you for the mini comic strip she’d done for him and dinner she’d prepared, Joon Soo calls and invites them all to dinner. Gong Shim agrees, but after Dan Tae hands her the bag filled with drawing tools and calls himself her very first fan (praise which has Gong Shim smiling in delight. She’s so cute), Dan Tae tells her that he won’t be able to make it to dinner as he has to be in the office (which is the truth as his aunt is traveling to the Philippines to take care of his father). Gong Shim is obviously disappointed and even the chance of dinner with Joon Soo alone, doesn’t cheer her up. Whilst Gong Shim’s perusing the very expensive menu and telling herself that she would just starve for some days to pay for the meal, a snotty girl walks up to her to chat about how Gong Shim is the only one out of all their school friends that has stayed out of touch (what the hell you yapping about girl? Aren’t you guys the one Gong Shim is always getting flowers for only for none of you to invite her to your gathering?). She then bombards Gong Shim with questions of what she does and where she works. When Gong Shim replies that she’s currently unemployed, the girl laughs and says Gong Shim still shouldn’t have used that as an excuse to stay out of touch. At that moment, her boyfriend comes over and after the introduction, glances between the two of them to say that even though they’re friends, Gong Shim’s completely different from his girlfriend (why I ought to. Yah! Who the hell do you think you are?! How dare you say such a thing?) and the two idiots laugh. The ‘friend’ then explains that Gong Shim took after her father who is short and ugly, rather than her tall and beautiful mother who her sister took after. And to make it worse, both sisters attended the same school. As the two idiots talk, Joon Soo, who had been on his way back had overheard everything they had to say, so when the girl asks Gong Shim who she came with, implying that the restaurant is too expensive for the likes of her, Joon Soo walks up to the group (you go Joon Soo!). The girl’s boyfriend it turns out works at Star Group and recognizes Joon Soo who he greets effusively. The girl is surprised at how handsome Joon Soo is and is even more surprised to learn that he’s a director of Star Group and asks Gong Shim if Joon Soo’s her boyfriend. Gong Shim says he’s not, and the girl smiles, saying she thought so. But Joon Soo speaks up to tell her that he likes Gong Shim, shocking the girl speechless (take that and smoke on it, bitch!). During dinner, Joon Soo tells Gong Shim that he hoped he hadn’t crossed a boundary by interfering, but Gong Shim tells him that she’s pleased he interfered as the girl used to ignore her a lot back when she was in school. Joon Soo smiles and then wishes he could have been more manly (Wait, more manly than that? Joon Soo sweetie, you were already manly). Gong Shim gives him the thumbs up though, and tells him that he was really cool, and Joon Soo smiles (aww Joon Soo. If only there wasn’t Dan Tae. You would have been my favorite).
6. Gong Shim’s almost kiss
Dan Tae gets home first, and is back to looking at his prepackaged food like it’s the love of his life. When Gong Shim’s classmate (the one who works at the convenience store) asks him if he doesn’t get tired of eating the same thing over and over again, he replies that when he likes something, he keeps right on liking that thing, no matter what happens (I think he’s talking about Gong Shim here guys). Just as he’s about to dig into his food, Gong Shim shows up with Joon Soo in tow and Dan Tae notices how lovingly Joon Soo’s talking to Gong Shim and adjusting the sleeves of her gown. By the time Gong Shim gets to Dan Tae’s door, he walks up the stairs to meet her and she, delighted to see him, asks why he couldn’t make it to dinner, saying that she kept thinking about him all through her meal (so whilst you were with another guy, the guy you think you have a crush on, you were thinking of Dan Tae? Poor Joon Soo. Yay Dan Tae. Hahaha), believing that he would have liked the food and the atmosphere of the place. She tells him that she would treat him there, sometime soon and makes to leave. But Dan Tae grabs her hand and moves closer… really closer and leans forward, his eyes on her lips. But he stops (Gah! Why?!!!!) and tells Gong Shim that she must treat him like she has promised, seeing that he did help her get her first paycheck (no. no.no. Don’t make it about food Dan Tae. Tell her how you feel!!!!!). An obviously shaken Gong Shim agrees and walks back to her house, touching her cheeks as she asks herself what she was expecting that she stood still for so long.
7. Dan Tae is now a secretary
Or to be more precise, Grandmother’s secretary; a position she gave him after she promoted her former secretary to be the vice president of their Chinese branch (Wow. Now that’s some promotion). It is a surprise to Joon Soo’s father and Dae Chul who walked into the office to find Dan Tae, already on the job, but napping with both his legs balanced on the table (Hahahaha. How unprofessional). When they jerk him awake, he introduces himself as Grandmother’s new secretary, but neither of them believe it and Dae Chul barks at Dan Tae to leave before he calls security. Thankfully Grandmother shows up to ask why they’re asking her secretary to leave and when they both express shock, Joon Soo’s father most of all who mentions that Dan Tae isn’t trained to be a secretary, Grandmother shuts them up by pointing out to Joon Soo’s father that he wasn’t trained to be a president either. And with that she has Dan Tae follow her out. Dae Chul immediately reports the news to Joon Soo’s mother, including the fact that Dan Tae is Soo Yong’s son and she tells him to handle it, as she finds the thought of Dan Tae working at Star Group annoying. (woman, your whiny voice annoys me. So sod off somewhere. Hmmph!) Dan Tae though is making friends with the cleaners and menial workers in Star Group and is even offering them free legal advice and service, all to create the avenue for information gathering later on. By the time he gets back to Grandmother’s office, Joon Soo is just about to leave, and the two friends rib each other about their working relationship, with Dan Tae calling Joon Soo director and Joon Soo telling Dan Tae he likes that he now works for Grandmother (cute. Please tell me you boys will maintain your bromance even after the secret is out…).
8. Dan Tae is almost poisoned
First order of business for Dan Tae the secretary is to represent Grandmother at the shareholders meeting. Dan Tae scans everyone present, but they all have their Star Group pin on. Next up, he tips his water to splash on the executive beside him and when the executive notices that his silver pen is changing color, Dan Tae stops everyone from drinking their water, claiming that the water seems to be poisoned. He then uses the pen as a test for everybody’s bottle of water whilst Dae Chul looks at him suspiciously. Finally, it’s only Dae Chul’s bottle of water that’s left and Dan Tae pours it on the silver pen: no discoloration. Dan Tae then takes his bottle of water again and pours it on the pen and boom, the pen turns brown (Dae Chul you rat bastard!). Joon Soo’s father tells the room that they should treat what happened as strictly confidential and should not let word get out whilst Dan Tae promises to investigate the issue on the down-low. Back at the Joon family dinner, Joon Soo’s father is filling in Grandmother on what happened at the meeting and Joon Soo’s mother is shocked to find out that someone purposefully targeted Dan Tae. Putting it together, she wonders if it’s her brother that did it (well, you did tell him to handle it, didn’t you?). Grandmother concerned about what’s happening asks that security in the office be tightened.
9. The attacks just keep coming
Dan Tae is outside the boardroom when he overhears a secret board meeting called by Joon Soo’s father and Dae Chul where the former informs the board members about how aware he is that all of them now feel uncomfortable with the threat of potentially being pointed out as the one involved in the poisoned water debacle, and opines that none of them would feel comfortable if Dan Tae continues to work for Grandmother and so therefore they should all submit their letters requesting that Grandmother find herself a new secretary. Even whilst Dan Tae is dealing with this sudden turn, Gong Shim comes to the office, where she runs into Joon Soo’s father who is completely pleased to see that she is not in his imagination and that she still tells him with a straight face when his jokes are not funny. They’re having a conversation when a random person on a bike stones Gong Shim with a balloon filled with red paint. Dan Tae rushes over to her house the minute he hears, concluding that it must be the work of the same person who attempted poisoning him and who has figured out that Gong Shim is close to him. And Gong Shim is terrified, trying to work out exactly why anyone would want to do something like that to her. Dan Tae promises to find the person responsible and asks her if she’d seen the person’s face or if the person had said something to her. Gong Shim answers in the negative. When Dan Tae presses for something, anything, she mentions that she was meeting with the president when it happened and it all happened so fast that she can’t remember anything. But, the mention of the president is enough for Dan Tae who immediately runs, placing the pieces together that, the water he had drank had been for the president, who had been standing beside Gong Shim when she’d been hit. He makes it to the president in time before the latter can be attacked by two people in a motorcycle helmet. Dan Tae disarms one of them only to reveal him as the accomplice of the president’s former secretary who was aggrieved that she’d been fired unjustly.
10. Joon Soo’s dad has a change of heart
After the heroic rescue Dan Tae had pulled for him the night before, Joon Soo’s father is of course feeling not as strongly as he had when he’d insisted that all the executive put in a written request to have Dan Tae fired. So, when he gets to the board meeting the next day, Dae Chul, as per the previously agreed discussion had gathered all the letters from all the executives, all unanimously requesting that Grandmother fire Dan Tae. Joon Soo’s father accepts the documents, but then informs the room that Grandmother won’t be coming for the meeting. Dae Chul, not yet realizing what is happening then suggests that Joon Soo’s father can take it to her in her office. It is then that Joon Soo’s father suggests to the room that they should all trust Grandmother’s judgement in regards to her secretary. Dae Chul doesn’t stand for this sudden change and neither do the other executives, but Joon Soo’s father isn’t open to any discussion on the matter as he tells them that Grandmother’s secretary is Ahn Dan Tae and dismisses the meeting to the shock of everyone gathered, Dae Chul in particular.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
These two… Because there is no way it is cool for you to talk that rudely to anyone. What the fuck is special about your fake ass girlfriend anyway? Girl, what the fuck is special about you anyway? Gong Shim has more pretty in one strand of her hair than you have put together. How dare you talk to Gong Shim like that? Who the hell do you think you are?
Headache inducing moment:
Because I could see it coming from a mile away, the minute Soo Yong tells Dan Tae that he would tell him everything in “person”. And know that the head injury has occurred, I suspect that it would be followed by an uber long recovery period and then amnesia, meaning an issue that could have been wrapped up in an episode, max 2, would now take 10 episodes. *Rolls eyes*.
This episode’s a Peach Melba Mimosa. It’s stunning, it’s light, it’s sweet, it’s fresh. And even though it has some twists and turns that make you wonder whether you’re still watching a RomCom, it ends it all with a bubbly note. Ah, the bubbly… We all love bubbly.
