No matter how much you run, you can’t hide the truth, even if you’ve been running for the past 26 years. Dan Tae learns a truth that shocks him to the very core. Gong Shim travels and has to come back home. Joon Soo is an adorably cute drunk and Gong Shim has started to fall even deeper in love.
Top 10 Moments:
- Dan Tae gives Gong Shim his blessings to go to Jeju
After witnessing his father digging the around the tree, Dan Tae spends the rest of the day and night, alone, thinking that his father killed Joon Pyo and had hid his remains beneath the tree (Awww Dan Tae. You have no idea do you?). Gong Shim on the other hand, had spent the entire day waiting on the rooftop for Dan Tae, who never showed. Nighttime finally has her going to her own house where father asks her once again for the time for her flight because he already misses her, and her mother makes her all the side dishes she needs (I notice you’re nowhere to be found Gong Mi, horrible sister you). By the next morning, she heads back to the rooftop and is delighted to see Dan Tae. Except, Dan Tae, still dealing with his own troubles asks her to go to Jeju Island, saying that it was selfish for him to have asked her to stay. Gong Shim takes this as just one more proof of Dan Tae’s wishy-washy, yo-yo behavior and asks if he sees her as an easy girl he can toy with. When all Dan Tae can say is that he’s sorry, Gong Shim informs him that her flight is for 3 that afternoon, and asks him one last time if she should go or stay. When he tells her to go, she tearfully hits him and walks away. 3PM has Gong Shim at the airport, whilst a depressed Dan Tae is at home, not able to even wish her goodbye although Joon Soo makes it in time to the the airport to see Gong Shim off. And Gong Shim’s new coworkers are nice enough and accept her warmly.
2. Everyone’s investigating
And Dan Tae begins it by writing Grandmother a letter, telling her that he won’t be continuing in his search for Joon Pyo, or seeing her in person anymore. He apologizes so many times in the brief note that even Grandmother wonders about them (we know of course that he’s apologizing on his father’s behalf for supposedly killing her grandson). Next up, he talks to his ‘aunt’ asking her if she’d heard from his dad since he travelled to the Philippines. When she answers that she hasn’t and she’s not surprise since that’s how his dad acts on a regular basis, he registers the answer. He also stores the response his friend gives him about there being no records of his father being back in the Philippines, meaning for all intents and purposes, Ahn Soo Young is still in Korea. At the same time, Dae Chul is reaching out to his contacts to locate Ahn Soo Young, whilst Joon Soo’s mother presses on Dae Chul to find the boy-man first.. Grandmother, not content with the note she received, comes to Dan Tae’s office to look for him, and runs into him just as he’s coming down the stairs. He’s startled to see her, and she’s worried at how gaunt he appears, asking if he’s alright. Dan Tae can barely tell her he’s alright without adding yet another ‘I’m sorry’ into the mix and Grandmother waves the words off, saying she’s always known that finding Joon Pyo would be hard. She tells Dan Tae not to worry about it and that he can still come and visit her any time, even without the whole looking for Joon Pyo cover.
3. Everyone’s hearing and seeing things
Starting with Joon Soo’s father who imagines seeing Gong Shim when he gets to the office as he receives her usual energetic greeting. He’s so delighted to see her it’s cute as he marvels at her being back and asks her to make him some tea with a happy laugh. Except, his laugh dies off as his eyes clear and he sees that it’s not Gong Shim but his new secretary, a pretty girl but who is a bit dull and lacking Gong Shim’s energy and spark. Joon Soo’s father looks just a disappointed and shakes his head to get rid of the cobwebs. He has the secretary make him some tea, although he’s clear to specify a separate brand from the one Gong Shim usually gets him. Gong Shim on the other hand can’t get away from Dan Tae in Jeju. Everything she hears reminds her of him, from her colleagues asking if she likes Bibim guksu which brings to mind the time she’d fed Dan Tae noodles because he had been faking an arm injury, to her boss’s ringing cell, playing the song “Andante” which makes her think she’s hearing his name, to the speakers blaring out “Andante” when it’s time for lunch, to her hearing Dan Tae’s name when her colleagues are talking about whether their coffee is sweet or not. (Ha! You’re not escaping him Gong Shim)
4. Dan Tae’s dream changes
A month passes by quickly with Gong Shim tending to the plant Dan Tae had given her pouring her heart and emotions into it as she tends to it and remembers all the little moments with Dan Tae that she’s had, even as the plant grows (is this a symbolism for her feelings cuz how neat is that?), until it blossoms into a Sunflower. Gong Shim takes a picture and tags a message asking Dan Tae to call her if he thinks the flower is pretty. Dan Tae though is in the middle of nowhere near home, and has been ignoring everyone and everything. Except for that night where he has the exact same dream he’s always had of a little boy crying in front of a store. Like he’s always done, he reaches out to touch the boy, but this night, his hands actually connected with the top of the boy’s head and the crying boy turns around to look at him as he cries for his mother, then turns right back to standing in front of Hyundai photo studio (the name of the store). Dan Tae also looks at the store and his eyes light on a poster with a sign that reads Bukseong Theatre. Dan Tae startles awake and immediately scrambles for his bag, whilst the dream is still fresh to pull out… a photograph of Joon Pyo who he now recognizes as the little boy from his dreams.
5. Gong Shim is back to square one
Upon getting to the nursery the next morning, ready for work, Gong Shim is surprised to see everywhere in disarray, and most importantly no workers. She’s startled when the workers all troop in, complaining bitterly, and is dismayed when she learns that the Branch Manager ran away with all the sales money. She runs to the main office, not willing to believe it, until she sees the repossessors coming to claim all the equipment that they have. As she breaks down in tears asking what she’s expected to do, Joon Soo who had been planning on surprising her with a visit holds back so she won’t see him. They eventually have a talk at the nursery where Joon Soo asks if she’s really happy with her work at the moment. He adds that he doesn’t really think she is, because of how far away she is from her family and those she knows. He also adds that just because she studied horticulture in school doesn’t necessarily mean that that is what she wants to be doing and tells her to think about it. Gong Shim promises to do so, but when Joon Soo asks if she would like to go fishing the next day, she tells him she has to return to Seoul for her father’s birthday.
6. Dan Tae receives a shock
Still thinking Joon Pyo is someone else, other than him, Dan Tae visits an old man he thinks might recognize Joon Pyo’s picture. Except, a lot of time has passed, and the old man doesn’t remember the kid. Dan Tae is just about to give up when he remembers the photo studio and asks the old man if he remembers it. The old man laughs as he points out that the studio is still standing and writes down the address of the place where it’s at. Dan Tae heads there, growing more confused by the moment as he recognizes the address as his home address when he was Joon Pyo’s age. When he gets there, he runs into the present owner of the photo studio who asks him if he came in for a portrait. When Dan Tae requests to meet the owner of the studio from 26 years ago, the man answers that the person would be his dad and takes Dan Tae in to meet the old man. When Dan Tae shows the old man Joon Pyo’s photograph and asks if he remembers the boy, the old man doesn’t remember him. When Dan Tae then asks the old man if he remembers him, as his dad had rented the extension studio from the man 26 years prior, the old man doesn’t remember him either. However when Dan Tae gives his name as “Ahn Dan Tae” son of “Ahn Soo Young”, the old man snaps asking Dan Tae who he is because Ahn Dan Tae is dead (Wow! What a way to have your identity shot to pieces). When Dan Tae still insists that he is Dan Tae, the old man goes into specific detail, saying Ahn Dan Tae drowned at the age of five and he was the one that pulled the dead boy from the stream he had drowned in (Damn. Harsher and harsher). As Dan Tae walks out of the man store, completely dazed, everything starts to come to him, his aunt and father’s suspicious behavior, his telling Grandmother that the kidnapper must have flown in at a particular timeline, and then the old man telling him that Ahn Dan Tae died when he was five. As everything swirls in his head, he asks himself if he’s Joon Pyo, and faints.
7. Gong Shim comes to Seoul for her dad’s birthday and Dan Tae lands himself in the hospital
Just like she told Joon Soo, Gong Shim flies into to Seoul, flowers in one hand and her luggage in another for her father’s birthday. When she gets home, her parents are thrilled to have her and greet her warmly (wow, I like this change. Hope they never go back to their nasty favoring one daughter over the next ways). When she asks where Gong Mi is at, she’s given the news that Gong Mi now works on the legal team at Start Group and her mother tells Gong Shim that although she had told Gong Mi not to work for the company that fired her sister, Gong Mi insisted on working for them anyway (awww, mum. At least you’re acting like a mum now. We’ve given up hope on Gong Mi ever acting like a big Sis). Both her parents make sure to ask about Dan Tae though and whether he’s doing okay (which just keeps raising them in my esteem. Like when you guys turn around, you turn around). Evening brings with a lit cake and candles and handing over of presents to Gong Shim’s dad who is delighted with every gift he gets (kind of like a kid in a candy store. Cute). Gong Shim’s time at her father’s birthday is cut short however when she receives a call from Dan Tae who turns out to be the hospital, informing her that Dan Tae has fainted. Thankfully, he only fainted out of shock and he soon comes out of it, relieved that his father isn’t a murderer now that he knows the truth. He also smiles when Gong Shim enters the room all concerned for his health (Aww Dan Tae, we shall have you at your full puppy megawatt smile in a bit) and explains that his father was in a bit of trouble, hence the reason why he couldn’t be reached all his while. He tells her though that everything is alright now and Gong Shim is relieved and then immediately launches into everything she’s wanted to tell him, from his name being in a song to the sunflower and Dan Tae just lets her keep talking with this utterly smitten expression on his face.
8. Gong Shim’s a rice-eating orderly & Joon Soo’s a cute drunk
With Dan Tae now awake and in front of her, Gong Shim throws herself fully into patient care. Chattering away and then becoming immediately still when Dan Tae teasingly calls her voice too loud. When the nurse brings in Dan Tae’s food, she brings out the tray, ready to start serving Dan Tae, except Dan Tae tells her that he doesn’t feel like eating and so she should go right ahead and eat. Gong Shim though is all against eating a patient’s food and when Dan Tae continues to push that she should eat, she insists that she can’t eat a patient’s food and can’t even understand people who do. She finally carries the tray out, and then comes back in only to meet Dan Tae with his IV drip in hand, insisting that he wants to take a walk around. Gong Shim immediately perks up at the chance to accompany Dan Tae on his walk only for Dan Tae to stop and stare hard at her face, or to be more precise, the grain of rice stuck on her face (Hahahaha). He accuses her of eating his food with a smile on his face and when she attempts to deny it, her burp gives her away (Hahaha). Nighttime has Gong Shim dozing off on her chair and when Dan Tae wakes to the sight, he rises to cover her with a blanket. Except, that’s the time when Gong Shim wakes up and they have a mini tussle with Dan Tae wanting her to go rest at home and Gong Shim insisting she’s okay with staying. They’ve just agreed to Gong Shim staying when Joon Soo who’s been drinking with his customers in order to close a deal comes in. He’s drunk off his ass and can barely stay upright on the chair they sit him on. While they try to get him something to help sober him up, Joon Soo burst outs with a “I hate you” at Dan Tae and looks almost tearful as he tells Dan Tae that he’s been worried about him and yet Dan Tae didn’t answer his calls, all with an adorable pout that has Dan Tae smiling and Gong Shim laughing. Feeling like they’re not taking him serious, he starts to insist that he means it, and that he really likes Dan Tae and so will be keeping his eyes on him. Then he breaks into smile as he tells Dan Tae that it’s good to see him, and then bows in thanks to Gong Shim for notifying him of Dan Tae’s whereabouts. (Gah! You’re so just too cute). In the morning, he tries to make a speedy getaway but can’t quite pull it off because one friend mocks him with his “I’ve got my eyes on you move” inside, and the other does the same to him when he meets her outside. (Hahahaha. Joon Soo has the I shall never hear the end of it look. Hahaha).
9. Dan Tae gets the rest of the story
After getting discharged from the hospital, Dan Tae sends Gong Shim ahead of him, telling her that he has a couple of things to clear up at the office. He heads to the office and the sound of his aunt calling him “Ahn Dan Tae” while she berates him for disappearing and not attempting to contact her has him telling her that he knows the truth: he is not Ahn Dan Tae. The words stun her, even more as Dan Tae continues that he knows the real Dan Tae drowned when he was five. He also tells her that he went to their old neighborhood where they all lived together, and that he knows that it is Dan Tae that was buried underneath that old tree. Every one of his statement is a nail in the heart of his aunt who starts to whimper and cry. She does snap out of it though when Dan Tae asked if his father had kidnapped him and tells him that no, his father didn’t kidnap him. Dan Tae then snaps as he raises his voice to ask exactly why is he living as Ah Dan Tae then. His aunt explains that Dan Tae’s mother had fallen into depression after watching her son drown and at spent days in one spot, blank and staring into space and she’d even attempted suicide twice. But when her husband had brought in Joon Pyo, Dan Tae’s mother had been so happy, convinced that her son Dan Tae had come back to her that she’d began to mother the boy. And just like that, years passed and Joon Pyo became Ahn Dan Tae. Dan Tae then repeats his question: had he been kidnapped by his father? His aunts responds just as strongly that he hadn’t been kidnapped by her brother-in-law. Someone else had brought Joon Pyo to him and asked him to hold onto him for a day, but when her brother-in-law had heard the person promise to either kill Joon Pyo or abandon him, the entire family had fled that night, worried that if Joon Pyo had gone back with the man, something terrible would have happened to him. When Dan Tae asks his aunt who it was that handed him over to his father, she has no idea. She does tell Dan Tae though that his father had planned on recently telling him the truth, but she’d been worried that they would become criminals and not be able to see Dan Tae again. With those words, she runs off to cry on the steps and is joined moments later by Dan Tae who tells her that she would always be his aunt (Awwww. Good for you Dan Tae. Cuz your real aunt would rather have you dead, btw) and thanks her for raising him so well.
10. Gong Shim’s comic book
With Dan Tae dealing with the complete reveal of his past, he forgets completely about Gong Shim’s instruction to him to come home early. As such, while he wanders the street, trying to take in all the new information and the shift his world has experienced, Gong Shim unpacks the rest of her things from Jeju, moves her Sunflower to the rooftop and then cooks a feast for Dan Tae. By the time night falls and Dan Tae gets home, Gong Shim isn’t there anymore, although she kept his food warm with a cover. Beside it is a bunch of illustrations she’d drawn, with one berating him for coming home late, the next one telling him to eat and the third reminding him to take his medication. He starts to cry at the sight, and by the time he removes the food cover to see the food underneath, he full on starts bawling.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
No one this episode. Maybe it’s because I saw little of Gong Mi and Joon Soo’s mother, so yeah I’m good.
Headache inducing moment:
None whatsoever. The truth is mostly out, and there were no hidden curves or annoying surprises. And strangely enough, I didn’t feel bad about the absence of both.
This episode’s a ginger peach soda with rum. All the sweetness of Gong Shim, Dan Tae and Joon Soo that has me hitting all the high notes spiced with the heartbreak of Dan Tae’s tears. It’s a kick, but a damn good one. Loved it!
