Multiple heads are always better than one when trying to carry out revenge; unless you’re Kim Gil Do. Moo Myeong and Yeo Kyung finally meet and form an alliance. Tae Ha falls even more in love. Moo Myeong gets a promotion but is caught in big trouble and Da Hee finally learns the truth.
Top 10 Moments:
- Gil Do and Dae Chun call each other out
Gil Do is just about to insert the poison into Dae Chun’s IV drip when the latter regains consciousness and calls him Gil Do. With Gil Do growling as to why Dae Chun is calling him that name when it’s not only Ha Jung Tae that put Goongnakwon on the map but also made the buckwheat royal pheasant noodle well known. Dae Chun simply calls out Gil Do as a murderer. Gil Do smiles at the words, then his eyes turn cold as he tells Dae Chun that he is not the only one that’s a murderer as Dae Chun caused the death of the only person he’s ever loved (wait Gil Do, you have the capacity to feel love? And Dae Chun’s a murderer? Wow). A flashback shows Dae Chun standing over Da Hee’s mother’s body, and whilst he’s still trying to deal with the news, Gil Do drops another bomb that Da Hee is the daughter of the woman he killed. Whilst Dae Chun stutters that it’s a lie, Gil Do leaves him with a warning to hand over his shares to him as doing otherwise would reflect badly on him and Gang Sook. He also warns the old man to do nothing else but stand in the precipice between life and death and leaves whilst Dae Chun calls his name. A flashback shows that Da Hee’s mother was indeed the one that found out about Gil Do’s murdering ways and when she’d tried to tell Dae Chun that he can’t take away the poster she’d found as she intends to tell the whole world the truth, Dae Chun pushed her away in anger, causing her to hit a hard cabinet and receive a head wound: thus resulting in her death. Dae Chun can only apologize to Da Hee when she comes running in.
2. Yeo Kyung connects the dots
After sending her investigator out to check out the crime scene where Gil Do had killed a housekeeper, Yeo Kyung gets the call stating congressman So Tae Sub as the owner of the building. When her assistant points out that the congressman is probably trying to pull off a scratch my back I scratch yours scenario, Yeo Kyung calls him while he’s waiting for Gil Do to come back to his seat so the competition can get underway. When Yeo Kyung accuses him of using her to settle a personal grudge, seeing that there’s no connection between Ha Jung Tae and Kim Gil Do, the congressman only replies her that there is a connection and she should keep digging. With that said, he hangs up the call. Yeo Kyung though continues to dig through it all, till she notices that the same land Ha Jung Tae built Goongnakwon on is the very same land that Kim Gil Do’s house used to stand on. Connecting it all, she figures it out that Kim Gil Do and Ha Jung Tae are the very same person
3. Moo Myeong becomes the new head of noodles
With Da Hee otherwise distracted at Dae Chun’s bedside, Moo Myeong is left alone to finish making his dishes, except the phantom pain from his stab wound flares up briefly. He’s well enough to continue though, and adds a bit of the powder Gil Do had used to render his parents immobile, into the dish to get rid of the bitterness. The deputy head of noodles however is unaware that Gil Do had fed his assistant some information as to what he should add to get rid of the bitter taste of the herbs, and his assistant subtly does just that. The deputy head of noodles dish therefore turns out great, but the phantom pain Moo Myeong had experienced meant that his noodles had cooked just a bit longer than they should have and so turned out soggy. This automatically means of course that Moo Myeong’s dish failed and Gil Do is just about to call out the scores when Seol Mi Ja halts him and asks the two contestants to tell them the recipe for the broth. Gil Do, knowing that this would show the deputy head of noodles cheated is quick to argue that the time is running late and they should just call the scores and move on. Except, Gang Sook, suspecting and not wanting him to win at this one supports Seol Mi Ja’s suggestion. When Moo Myeong steps out to list out his ingredients and mentions that he’d added wolfsbane powder, everyone is shocked at the fact that he basically fed them poison. Moo Myeong does correct them though that the powder is both poison and medicine, medicine if used in small quantities which is what he added to the broth. Congressman So Tae Sub wanting to stick in the knife adds that only a monster would poison someone’s food and seeing that Moo Myeong is not a monster, they’re safe. When the deputy head of noodles steps up to mention his ingredients, Da Hee speaks up to say that they swapped ingredients instead. Whilst Gil Do’s trying to shut her up, Seol Mi Ja mentions that she does remember the recipe and asks the deputy head of noodles if he truly doesn’t remember adding mountain ash and white tuckahoe to his dish. He admits to not adding those ingredients (damn this guy’s amazingly truthful) and forfeits the competition, meaning Moo Myeong wins by default.
4. Da Hee makes an announcement
After Gil Do declares Moo Myeong the new head of noodles, Da Hee announces that Dae Chun has gained full consciousness, all the whilst glaring at Gil Do. The news hits everyone differently, with the staff members, Gang Sook and Seol Mi Ja thrilled at the news whilst Gil Do looks not so thrilled as the doctor declares that a lawyer can draw up papers to declare Dae Chun as fully competent. When Gil Do steps out to see the doctor out, Dae Chun opens his eyes and calls his daughter’s name for the first time since the accident and asks her how she’s been. He calls Seol Mi Ja’s name next and asks her to look after Gang Sook on his behalf. He asks for the kitchen staff next, and after he gives them each a personalized greeting, reminds them that the head of noodles is the head of the kitchen and they should help him whilst having fun making noodles. (Oh Gah! I’m crying right now. Why does it seem like you’re telling them all your last wishes Dae Chun? You can’t die just yet! Stay alive! Stay alive!)
5. Gil Do is still a lying manipulator
When Da Hee confronts him about the wolfsbane and wanting to kill Dae Chun, Gil Do replies that Dae Chun is the only father he’s ever had: the one man who took in a nobody, made him his heir and let him marry his precious daughter, so why would he want to kill such a person? He spins it all by calling wolfsbane a poison and a medicine, a medicine that works wonders on people who have suffered a stroke which is why he’d been feeding Dae Chun wolfsbane to get him to wake up so he can knead dough and make noodles again. Da Hee seems to buy it though, and Gil Do pulls the “I want to be alone” card to get her to leave. Gang Sook though doesn’t buy the lies and tells Gil Do as such. She also warns him that someday soon, all his secrets will come tumbling out and adds that he should never approach her father again and should just let the man die in peace. If he agrees to stay away, she would play her role and act like the dutiful wife.
6. Moo Myeong knows how to play the game
Not only does he make it the first order of business to promote the head of broth to the deputy head of noodles position (which has probably earned him the man’s eternal devotion, plus the support of the old staff who all like him), he also meets with the deputy head of noodles assistant to inform him that the whole matter at the competition wasn’t the man’s fault so he shouldn’t beat himself over it (the man tears up in gratitude). All these while, Da Hee notices Moo Myeong’s ‘nice guy’ turn, so when he invites her for a celebratory outing, she agrees to come along, and even though Tae Ha spends the entire time, stalking her and Moo Myeong to the fish restaurant that Moo Myeong owns, Moo Myeong doesn’t acknowledge him and Da Hee doesn’t notice him. Moo Myeong is still going through his buttering her up routine when a trip down the past has Da Hee telling him that his prosecutor friend is just as inflexible and stubborn as he is. The news comes as a shock to Moo Myeong who didn’t know Yeo Kyung had visited his shop, and he’s even more surprised to learn that Yeo Kyung visited Goongnakwon. After finishing their meal, Moo Myeong pumps Da Hee with alcohol and suggests the play a game of truth or dare. The first question is asked by Da Hee who asks Moo Myeong why he joined Goongnakwon. Moo Myeong chooses to have a shot rather than answering. When Moo Myeong tosses the question right back at her, Da Hee choses to have a drink instead. Da Hee the lightweight, is instantly intoxicated, so intoxicated that when Moo Myeong asks her how to access the Gil Do’s secret room, she tells him to look for a button underneath Gil Do’s desk.
7. Da Hee kisses Tae Ha
With Da Hee drunk off her ass, Moo Myeong heads out of the fish restaurant to come face to face with Tae Ha who has been waiting outside. Tae Ha glares at his old friend and nothing Moo Myeong can say about not taking advantage of Da Hee can convince him otherwise. Tae Ha drives Da Hee home and she wakes up briefly to smell him, and to inform him, with a smile on her face that he smells nice: he smells like Tae Ha. She’s still drunk when they get to Goongnakwon and proceeds to take selcas with Tae Ha (who smiles adorably when the camera is trained on him). Whilst trying to wrestle the phone away from her, Tae Ha and Da Hee get dangerously close and she responds by leaning closer and giving him a light kiss on the lips. She almost falls, but Tae Ha catches her in time and as she snuggles close, she tells him that she really likes his smell.
8. Moo Myeong meets with Yeo Kyung and stops being an idiot
After hearing from Gil Young that Yeo Kyung is investigating Goongnakwon, and hearing Da Hee tell him that Yeo Kyung actually visited Goongnakwon, Moo Myeong reaches out to the friend who hasn’t heard from him since the day he was stabbed. He attempts to get her to seat, but Yeo Kyung is not there for a courtesy visit. Instead, she comes right out to say that she knows that Moo Myeong is going after Gil Do and that nothing she says would get him to stop doing so. And so, she’s decided she would stop worrying about it or trying to get him to stop with his plans. She drops her own bombshell that she knows Gil Do is somehow involved in her parents’ death and she would get to the bottom of it all. She continues that seeing that they all share a common enemy, the only way to get Tae Ha and Moo Myeong out of Goongnakwon is to crush Gil Do. She asks that they join forces, but idiotic Moo Myeong simply tells her to stay out of it and that he would do it all on his own: that monster Gil Do is way out of her league. Yeo Kyung asks him if he’s ever killed someone, because she has. And to make it all worse, she did nothing as Tae Ha took all the blame. She claims that she is a monster and begs Moo Myeong not to run away from her, saying that when she’s done with it all, she would quit her job, clear Tae Ha’s name and pay for her crimes and with that said, she walks out of the restaurant, only to be startled when Moo Myeong wraps her in a hug as he tells her that the reason why he’d stayed away from her was because he knew she’d get involved. Now though, he asks that they stop running away and work together. He does point out to her though that she shouldn’t take the initiative as he will always act first (the fact that she’s not sharing her suspicions that Kim Gil Do and Ha Jung Tae are one and the same has me thinking that agreement wouldn’t last long though). He also shares with her that he’d discovered how to access Gil Do’s hidden room and would go in soon, whilst Yeo Kyung asks that he get her enough evidence that she can use to attain a search warrant.
9. Gil Do meets with congressman So Tae Sub and Dae Chun makes a decision
After their promised golf game, congressman So Tae Sub excuses smarmy prosecutor from the table so he can level with Gil Do. He wants Gil Do to help him launder money but is not willing to wait the year it takes for the investment to mature. Rather, he’d like his money back in a three months. When Gil Do states that it’s impossible, the congressman just replies that he should make it possible. Across town, in Gongnakwon, Dae Chun calls for his attorney to create a new will. The lawyer however would not disclose the contents of the new will to Gang Sook (who is still convinced her father left her his shares in Goongnakwon. Something tells me he left them to Da Hee though, out of guilt for the pain he’s caused her of course) or Gil Do. Gil Do, upset at the possible betrayal, pulls out the strings of beads Dae Chun had left when he’d fled from the murder scene and slides it back on Dae Chun’s wrist, informing the old man that Da Hee would be there soon, and considering the fact that she has the last piece of bead from her mother’s murderer’s beads bracelet, she should be able to piece together the truth.
10. Moo Myeong fails to get into the secret room and Da Hee learns the truth
Following Da Hee’s advice, and knowing full well that Gil Do had stepped out of his office, Moo Myeong hurries to the office and presses the button underneath the desk. Except, instead of the secret room doors opening, the security alarm is activated and Gil Do is notified about an intruder trying to gain access into the room. The doors automatically seal up and even though Moo Myeong tries to get out, he can’t. Tae Ha though tries to bust the door open so his friend can get out. Meanwhile, on the other side of Goongnakwon, Da Hee comes running to see Dae Chun and is at first worried about him, till she spots the string of beads he tries to hide. As she tears up, asking him if he killed her mother, Dae Chun goes into cardiac arrest whilst Gil Do draws closer to nabbing Moo Myeong in his office.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
No one. Even Moo Myeong getting stuck in the room can’t be readily blamed because he played his cards right. It was just unfortunate that Gil Do had gotten wary of anyone entering his secret room that he’d initiated a complete shutdown in case of a breach.
Headache inducing moment:
Because this right here is what gave me a migraine, praying and hoping that Gil Do doesn’t catch Moo Myeong in the room nor does he discover how close a friendship Moo Myeong and Tae Ha share, because at this rate, he might just discover both in one fell swoop.
This episode’s a snake bite, sharp and heady as we deal with the different claws all our characters have developed (some more than others) and look forward to the poison they shall hopefully come together to infuse in Gil Do.
