Sometimes, when you take a leap of faith, people might just surprise you. Choi Joon Ha comes through, Joon suk gets a taste of what it feels like to have everything crumble around him, Ha Nuel and Seok Ho finally get Sung Hyun the recognition he deserves and the most beautiful duet holds as a result of it all.
Top 10 Moments:
- Choi Joon Ha refuses to help
Both Choi Joon Ha and Seok Ho settle in to have a drink and Choi Joon Ha cuts straight to the heart of the matter, he’s sorry but he wouldn’t be able to help. Seok Ho is as expected, desperate for Choi Joon Ha to come clean as he’s sure the man has been as miserable as Seok Ho has been. Choi Joon Ha though simply tells him that although he loved singing, he made the wrong choice and he became miserable and yet coming out with the truth will make him even more miserable (Drats! I knew it was too early to consider things would go smoothly for our guys). Even Seok Ho pleading that Choi Joon Ha should help him keep his promise to get Ha Nuel to sing Sung Hyun’s song on stage doesn’t get Choi Joon Ha to think otherwise as the latter is instead focused on his family not discovering his shameful past. Choi Joon Ha instead offers Seok Ho the royalties from the song and says he hasn’t even touched a cent of it. (dude! Money’s not what they want. They just want you to tell the truth!) He asks Seok Ho to pass the money across to Ha Nuel, except Seok Ho asks him to give Ha Nuel the money himself (you go Seok Ho. Let’s see that guy look Ha Nuel straight in the eye and try to pay him for his brother’s song instead of just confessing to his wrong). And even though Seok Ho insists, Choi Joon Ha just replies that Seok Ho can either give it to Ha Nuel or give it to a good cause; he though is leaving Korea the very next day. Looks like Joon Suk was able to sink his hooks into Choi Joon Ha after all.
2. Seok Ho speaks to Mango Entertainment
After his meeting with Choi Joon Ha, Seok Ho meets with Min Joo, Man Shik, Geu Rin and CEO Byun to share with them the results of his meeting. Man Shik is quick to understand where Choi Joon Ha is coming from: a well-known songwriter would consider it walking around naked in public if he admits that he stole someone else’s song. Min Joo though is not concerned with being humane as she wonders if maybe they should share Sung Hyun’s music sheet online to prove that the song is his. Man Shik shoots down the suggestion though as they can’t prove when the music sheet was written. CEO Byun though, has proof: the video Seok Ho had asked him to make when Sung Hyun was recording his song. Seok Ho is shocked to hear this news and the fact that Joon Suk has no idea that there’s even a recording of such (wow! Talk about an ace in the hole), whilst everyone else cheers at the fact that the recording has the date and time stamped on it. Seok Ho though is not cheering as he doesn’t want to ruin Choi Joon Ha’s life in order to get Sung Hyun’s song back. (wait what? Seok Ho, this is not the time to be noble. Come on!) Seok Ho’s solution though is to use Choi Joon Ha’s love for music as a way to reach the man. (Seriously Seok Ho, I really don’t get this or what you’re doing.) Geu Rin is of course distraught at having to give up this golden chance and Seok Ho notices. He calls her out to remind her that should they go the route CEO Byun was suggesting then they will be no different from Joon Suk. Geu Rin wants him to promise though that should they not be able to convince Choi Joon Ha before he leaves, Seok Ho would consider falling back to CEO Byun’s plan. Seok Ho just smiles that they will succeed and then passes on the envelope of cash so Geu Rin can hand it over to Ha Nuel. And sure enough, Geu Rin happens on just the right concert where Choi Joon Ha had written that he’d been honored that his fans had poured out to, to come see him perform, even when the weather had been horrible and the roads were closed. Splitting the task between the Mango Entertainment group, Seok Ho has Min Joo checking for flight details, CEO Byun checking out the old stage, Geu Rin hanging out with Ha Nuel, whilst himself and Man Shik head to catch Choi Joon Ha before he can board the plane.
3. Ha Nuel speaks to the root of it all
Geu Rin gets back home and passes on the royalties Choi Joon Ha had given Seok Ho to Ha Nuel. When she tells Ha Nuel that Choi Joon Ha was too scared to come out with the truth, Ha Nuel calls it as it is: Choi Joon Ha is simply using the money to assuage his guilty conscience so he can continue being selfish. He stomps off angry, unable to understand why on earth Seok Ho would have collected the money in the first place. By the time he wakes up the next morning though, he asks for where Seok Ho is at, and the envelope filled with cash. With the envelope in hand, he goes searching for Seok Ho.
4. Seok Ho meets Choi Joon Ha at the airport as does Ha Nuel
With his mission in mind, Seok Ho drives to the airport to try and catch Choi Joon Ha before the latter boards his flight. Whilst on the drive, he watches the video of Sung Hyun CEO Byun had made and has to pull over so he can cry for his friend. They finally make it to the airport in time to receive CEO Byun’s call informing them that the concert center intends to be rebuilt by the next year, causing Seok Ho to hope that Choi Joon Ha is able to work through his issues early enough. Man Shik is grumbling about them getting something to eat when Choi Joon Ha shows up with bags in tow. Choi Joon Ha sighs as he tells Seok Ho that he’d already said all he needed to say the day before and Seok Ho simply hands him Sung Hyun’s music sheet and the USB containing the video made to show Sung Hyun recording the song. (That had better not be the only copy you have Seok Ho.) He asks Choi Joon Ha to watch the video and Choi Joon Ha is just about to leave when Ha Nuel comes running in. Choi Joon Ha is shocked and all he can say is that he’s sorry. Ha Nuel cuts through the bullshit to ask what exactly Choi Joon Ha is sorry for: for what happened back in 2005? Or for not being able to put things to right in the present? When Choi Joon Ha replies that he’s sorry for both, Ha Nuel holds out the cash and asks if Choi Joon Ha gave it to him because he’s sorry. Choi Joon Ha replies that he gave it because the money didn’t belong to him, to which Ha Nuel asks him why he can’t give back the song then especially seeing that even after Choi Joon Ha dies, all the credits to the song would be ascribed to him. Choi Joon Ha simply replies that he has no right to hear Ha Nuel call him sir, plus he has no courage and that’s the only thing he can do. Ha Nuel, looking tearful tells Choi Joon Ha that he’s not looking for the man to bring back his brother from the grave. No, he doesn’t even want the money, nor does he resent Choi Joon Ha. His brother had not been strong, and he’d been too young for him to help his brother, so the only person he resents is himself. Choi Joon Ha can only apologize and claim that he has to catch his flight. He adds that if Ha Nuel doesn’t want to accept the money, he would donate it to charity in Ha Nuel’s name. Ha Nuel though replies him that he would go onto the show and sing the song. And whilst everyone is clapping at Choi Joon Ha’s classic ‘hit’, both he, Choi Joon Ha and Joon Suk would know exactly whose song it is. And so, until he goes on stage, he would continue to hope that Choi Joon Ha comes out of his self-made hell, all on his own and prove that he is a better man that Joon Suk. With those words said, he walks away with Seok Ho and Man Shik.
5. Jackson leaves KTOP and Seok Ho makes a request
After leaving the airport, Seok Ho meets with Ji Nu who is amazed at everything Seok Ho and Ha Nuel are dealing with at the moment. When Seok Ho asks what’s happening with KTOP, Ji Nu admits to Jackson having left KTOP whilst he has left Jackson and asked them to find a new vocalist. When Seok Ho expresses concern for the group, Ji Nu simply tells him to concentrate on his own worries and wonders at how he’s been so distracted with his plans to study abroad when Seok Ho was going through such hell. The words bring Seok Ho back to the fact that he’d promised to help Ji Nu in his travel processing. He asks Ji Nu where’s he’s traveling to and the later claims England as he wants to be in the same place the Beatles originated from. Seok Ho smiles, but not for long as he goes straight to the reason for the visit, he wants Ji Nu to hand the credits for the song that had been stolen from the songwriter, back to the songwriter who had originally written the song. Ji Nu just like Choi Joon Ha replies that he’s not strong enough to do so, and apologizes. Seok Ho simply apologizes right back, claiming that he’d become emotional after seeing a recording of Sung Hyun performing his song which had led him to remember the songwriter whose song he had handed over to Jackson. Ji Nu though just looks even more distraught. (I see what you’re there Seok Ho. Trying to get Ji Nu to come through without you pressuring him).
6. Choi Joon Ha grows some balls
Min Joo’s at Man Shik’s house waiting for Seok Ho to come home, only to realize that he most likely won’t be coming home that night. When she makes to leave, she realizes it’s raining, but Man Shik insists on handing her another umbrella instead of her using Geu Rin’s green umbrella (the one she’d handed over to Seok Ho) because Seok Ho seems to cherish the umbrella. Seok Ho is thinking of said umbrella as he steps out the door of Mango Entertainment and notices that it’s raining. He’s still thinking about it when he gets a call from Choi Joon Ha who asks if it’s possible for him to sing at the concert center once again before it’s closed for reconstruction. Seok Ho says he will make it happen and when Choi Joon asks who will come to the concert after hearing about what’s he’s done, Seok Ho answers that just like that day when the weather had been atrocious and the roads had been blocked, the seats would still be full of all Choi Joon Ha’s fans. The words seal it for Choi Joon Ha who asks what he has to do, and Seok Ho smiles. The next morning he shares the good news with a delighted ddanddara band and even Ha Nuel cracks a smile.
7. Seok Ho breaks the news
The director PD is of course surprised at the fate that the song everyone thought was owned by Choi Joon Ha actually belongs to Jo Sung Hyun and to make it all interesting, that same song would be sung by Ha Nuel. Seok Ho informs her that he’s only doing this so so she can make sure the band makes it to the stage, but she tells him that she’s not concerned about that, because considering the amount of publicity the news would bring, the brand going on stage is definitely going to happen. (I hope you remember this woman, just in case Joon Suk starts to manipulate things in the background again) Even though the director PD is surprised that Choi Joon Ha managed to con the entire country, Seok Ho points her to the fact that Choi Joon Ha has been in a lot of anguish all these while. With that done, Seok Ho calls his contact at the newspaper to help him meet with the reporter that was meant to have broken Ha Nuel’s story on behalf of KTOP but who instead had the story taken from him by Seok Ho. The man is of course suspicious, until Seok Ho shows him the documents on the Choi Joon Ha’s scoop. The man is thrilled of course, but Seok Ho asks him to make the confession look thoughtful, as a favor to Seok Ho himself (awww. Even looking out for Choi Joon Ha are we Seok Ho? You’re too good for this world I tell ya).
8. Ha Nuel gets the courage to sing his brother’s song
Practice session has ddanddara practicing to sing ‘it’s okay to cry’, except Ha Nuel loses his courage at the last minute and can’t sing the song. Seok Ho who has figured out why Ha Nuel is so hesitant calls Min Joo to bring over his laptop and the USB stick on which he has Sung Hyun’s recording. She brings it and plays the video, and Ha Nuel seeing his brother in the studio breaks down in tears as he asks Sung Hyun why he did what he did. (Damn, even I’m crying right now) Soon everyone is crying right along with him, and then Seok Ho comes in to ask Ha Nuel why he wouldn’t sing Sung Hyun’s song, especially because Sung Hyun’s song must get out to the rest of the world and the only person who can sing his song is Ha Nuel. He tells Ha Nuel that there would be a press release that day, stating that ‘It’s Okay to Cry’ is Jo Sung Hyun’s song, not Choi Joon Ha’s and Jo Sung Hyun is Jo Ha Nuel’s big brother. The press release would also state that Sung Hyun’s song was stolen by KTOP, leading Sung Hyun to commit suicide. He tells Ha Nuel that he’s aware that Ha Nuel probably feels like his heart is about to implode, but, he must still sing the song well. If anything because it’s Sung Hyun’s song. Whilst Seok Ho is giving Ha Nuel the pep talk, Choi Joon Ha is reading the hateful comments being left about him on the web. He receives a message from Seok Ho asking him to come out for a drink, but ignores it to call his family instead. (and may I add, his English intonation is perfect. Perfect I tell you!) Expecting to be berated, he’s pleasantly surprised when his wife tells him how proud she is of him making the decision and how proud his son is of his courage as well. With that done, he replies Seok Ho’s text that they can have a drink together when Seok Ho comes to visit him in Australia and asks Seok Ho for a favor: He wants Seok Ho to find a way to get him on the Legend Again (the TV show) stage. Seok Ho immediately hurries to the station to get his PD friend to not only agree to the request, but to also agree to Choi Joon Ha and Ha Nuel singing a duet together. Except, when he gets to the band to ask Kyle to change the arrangement into a duet, Ha Nuel comes right out to ask if Seok Ho is asking that he sing a duet with Choi Joon Ha to which Seok Ho replies that no, he’s asking for a duet between Sung Hyun and Ha Nuel. (Huh? What does that mean?)
9. Joon Suk loses it
After reading the article on Choi Joon Ha’s confession, Joon Suk as expected, loses it and starts to scream that no one on his team is able to get anything right. He’s even more pissed to realize that all of KTOP’s actors and singers have been blacklisted by all the stations because of the role KTOP played in the whole Choi Joon Ha- Jo Sung Hyun debacle. And in addition to it all, the artists who contracts are up to be re-signed in that particular year, have all refused to sign with KTOP. Joon Suk asks his minion to offer the artists anything and everything they want to get them to sign and asks him to get out. The man leaves just as Joo Han steps into the room and Joon Suk tells Joo Han that the minion wouldn’t be able to handle it all on his own. So, he wants Joo Han to step up and help out. Joo Han though is only there to drop his own bomb: he wants Joon Suk to follow through with processing his resignation letter. When Joon Suk tells him that he has nowhere to go because he’s not talented enough (dude, you suck at getting your people to stay), Joo Han admits to being well aware of that fact, which is why he wants to start from scratch, just like Seok Ho. He leaves Joon Suk to scream at the fact that everything is going awry (oh Joon Suk, hopefully the show is just getting started with you. You still have a whole lot to lose and we’re all here waiting for you to lose everything).
10. The Performance
As the day of the performance arrives, Ha Nuel takes the ddanddara band members to come and see Sung Hyun. He introduces them all as his friends, and they all make their introductions, from Kyle who admits that his arrangement is not as nice as Sung Hyun, even though he hopes they would all do well, to Jae Hoon who informs Sung Hyun that Ha Nuel is better looking than him, to Geu Rin who admits to Sung Hyun that she might never have met him but she thinks of Sung Hyun as her brother as well. Whilst in the dressing room, as they get ready for their performance, Choi Joon Ha walks into the room and thanks Ha Nuel for letting him join him on stage, and Ha Nuel thanks him for returning his brother’s song. He replies that he merely returned what he had been stolen and is grateful that Ha Nuel is giving him the honor of being with him on stage. As Choi Joon Ha leaves, Jae Hoon who always speaks straight without thinking much of it, calls him a cool guy. Out on stage, Choi Joon walks out to no applause or praise from the crowd and speaks that he knows it’s hard for them all to see him, especially considering that he’s not had a good image in 11 years. He continues that the reason why he’s on the stage that day is because he ran away and the fans who waited for him all these years heard the shameful news about what he’s done and so now, he not only wants to see them in person, but he wants to apologize to their faces and inform them that he’s officially retiring. He makes a bow to the eerily silent crowd and introduces the next performer: Jo Sung Hyun. And sure enough, a holographic image of Sung Hyun appears on stage to start singing, and is joined by Ha Nuel in a tear inducing, utterly beautiful duet.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
With an episode like this, where everything fit so perfectly and left me in tears? No one of course. I can’t even be bothered with Joon Suk because I got a satisfying taste of what everything crashing around him would be like.
Headache inducing moment:
Nothing headache inducing happened in this episode thankfully. Like honestly, everything just flew by like a breeze. No unnecessary angst or idiocy. It was just perfect.
This episode’s a strawberry pom mojito. Like honestly, so much sweetness, you would want to bathe it in. After all that suffering we’ve endured on Entertainer, it is so satisfying to see the good guys come out on top and see Sung Hyun receive his validation as the owner of his song.
