Sometimes it might be hard to do, but laying down all the cards is always the best thing to do. Ha Nuel and Seok Ho deal with the truth they’ve now learned and come out stronger for it. Joon Suk is still a snake but Joo Han’s better. Choi Joon Ha makes his appearance and maybe just maybe there might be hope on the horizon.
Top 10 Moments:
- Seok Ho beats the crap out of Joon Suk
Following CEO Byun’s revelation about the true reason behind the death of Sung Hyun, Seok Ho immediately heads to the club Joon Suk is known to visit. He’s initially unable to meet him, till he spots Joon Suk in the corridor with some workers at the club with him. Screaming his name, Seok Ho lands a flying kick at Joon Suk, then proceeds to beat the ever living crap out of him (you go Seok Ho. Beat that ass to within a inch of his life), all the while screaming and asking Joon Suk why he did it. He’s just about strangling Joon Suk to death after the later implies that he insulted Sung Hyun’s disability when Seok Ho remembers Sung Hyun warning him that should he hit everyone who insults him, then he (Sung Hyun) becomes pitiful. The words stay his hand and Joon Suk reminding him of the songwriter he had done the exact same thing to (i.e. stealing the man’s song and handing it over to another musician) destroys him. Seok Ho does promise that Joon Suk would get his just rewards (I hope so too, brother), and Joon Suk just laughs and tells him that he’s looking forward to Ha Nuel singing his brother’s song (asswipe!).
2. Seok Ho breaks down and Ha Nuel’s heart is further broken
After leaving Joon Suk, Seok Ho heads to Sung Hyun’s memorial site and breaks down in tears as he considered how difficult it must have been for his friend. He spends the night there, crying and telling Sung Hyun he’s sorry, then crawls into bed the next morning and stays there the entire day even though everyone in the office is worried about what’s wrong with him, and CEO Byun who knows the truth can’t tell it. Everyone is understandably worried, and even Geu Rin going to visit him couldn’t get him out of bed. When Geu Rin gets back to the house, Ha Nuel meets with her to confirm how Seok Ho is doing. When she replies that he’s still sleeping and is not eating or drinking anything, Ha Nuel, worried for her asks her to eat her own meals. He ends the sentence by calling her ‘noona’ and when she calls him out on it, he asks if she wants him to go back to calling her Geu Rin. She says no and tells him that it reminds her of when they first met and how she was happy to have a cute younger brother. She adds that she liked it then and likes it now: that she has a cute younger brother. Ha Nuel looks heartbroken at the words. Message received loud and clear Geu Rin.
3. Seok Ho breaks the news to Ddanddara
With Seok Ho out of commission, the band decides to start practicing the song, with Kyle’s new arrangement done. They’re in the middle of band practice when Seok Ho walks in and explains that it’s been a difficult period for him and he’s sorry he had them all worried. He then starts to tell them the story, of how ten years prior he had a friend who was a talented songwriter with an amazing voice. Wanting his friend to show his talent to the rest of the world, he introduced him to his agency. Even though his friend didn’t want to do it, he pushed and prodded till his friend agreed. Then, he had to travel to Moscow and was there for a month. When he returned, his friend was already dead of a heart attack and his album was never released. Ten years later, he met his friend’s little brother: Jo Ha Nuel. When Ha Nuel asks him why he’s dredging up the past, Seok Ho tells the band that they shouldn’t go on the show. When everyone exclaims as to why they can’t go on the show, Seok Ho comes clean: ‘It’s okay to cry’ (and yeah I’m crying whilst typing this) is not Choi Joon Ha’s song but Jo Sung Hyun’s. The news is of course devastating to Ha Nuel, but not as devastating as when Seok Ho continues and explains that because of that incident, Sung Hyun drowned himself in the river. It wasn’t a heart attack, it was suicide. Whilst Ha Nuel begins to hyperventilate and has to leave the room, Seok Ho faints.
4. Geu Rin comes through
Whilst Seok Ho is in the hospital, remembering the ‘this is all your fault’ look Ha Nuel had tossed his way before he’d left the practice room, Geu Rin comes to Ha Nuel’s room to be a sounding board. Ha Nuel admits that he knows it’s wrong but he wonders if his family would still be alive had Seok Ho not come into his brother’s life: his brother would be content with his record store and wouldn’t have killed himself, his parents wouldn’t have been so opposed to Ha Nuel pursuing a singing career, meaning they wouldn’t have gotten into an accident trying to stop him from singing. Geu Rin agrees on all the points, but she also points out that when they were struggling and Ha Nuel had been framed, and Ha Nuel had decided to give up on music, it was Seok Ho’s re-entrance into their lives that led to Ha Nuel not going down that path. Ha Nuel’s focus though is on the fact that his brother died, miserable and alone, with no one on his side, and he would always remember that every time he sees Seok Ho. Ha Nuel then pays a visit to his brother’s memorial site and tells him that he wished they’d been closer in age, because if they had been, Sung Hyun would not have been lonely or had to die like that. Instead, he would have come to Ha Nuel for advice. He tells his brother that he doesn’t like their ill-fated relationship with Seok Ho and then proceeds to open the Nirvana album his brother had always had on him, and sees the music sheet for ‘It’s okay to cry’. And then Ha Nuel proceeds to do just that, breaking down in tears as he calls for his brother.
5. Ha Nuel pays Joon Suk a visit
After leaving his brother, Ha Nuel asks Geu Rin to drive him to KTOP. She is of course hesitant about doing so but Ha Nuel insists. He also insists on going in alone. Joon Suk meets with him, figuring that Ha Nuel needs to shout at him as well. He’s feeling smug as Ha Nuel walks in and says he has no idea how to greet him, considering that anything he says will be awkward to Ha Nuel. Ha Nuel puts him in his place by saying that he doesn’t want to hear a thing from thrash like him. (You go Ha Nuel! Tell that slime ball exactly what you think of him!) He continues that Sung Hyun died because of Joon Suk and that Joon Suk is too worthless to even hear about the pain his family went through. (Keep telling him baby. Make it hurt and make it burn.) He tells him that he assumed it was Seok Ho that beat the crap out of him, he on the other hand, will kill Joon Suk silently. He rephrases that he would make Joon Suk want to die, exactly the way he’d done to Sung Hyun (better keep your words Ha Nuel. I shall be hear waiting with popcorn for that SOB to go down in flames). And then, he walks out like a boss, leaving Joon Suk to seethe.
6. Ha Nuel decides to sing his brother’s song
Whilst Jae Hoon and Yeon Soo are discussing the pain Ha Nuel must be going through, and wondering if he would even ever want to sing again, Kyle, furious at it all, rips up the music sheet and says they shouldn’t even bother going on the show and singing the song because doing that would be too painful, especially because if any of them put themselves in Ha Nuel’s shoes, they won’t want to sing the song either. All three of them agree, when Ha Nuel interrupts to inform them that he would sing the song. They are of course adamant about not singing it, as Ha Nuel’s brother is just like a brother to them all (love seeing how far you’ve come Kyle). Whilst everyone is insisting that he shouldn’t sing the song, Geu Rin sides with Ha Nuel and says he can sing it if he wants, and she would make the arrangements even if Seok Ho is unwilling to do so. The song is Sung Hyun’s, no matter what anyone says. With that decided, Ha Nuel heads out alone to visit Seok Ho at the hospital.
7. Seok Ho and Ha Nuel patch things up
Except, by the time Ha Nuel gets to the hospital, Seok Ho has already disappeared. Thinking fast, Ha Nuel asks which bridge exactly, his brother jumped off from and sure enough, Seok Ho is right there, looking at the sea, whilst he remembers telling Sung Hyun about CEO Byun and Joon Suk being good people. He is so lost in thought that he doesn’t notice when Ha Nuel shows up. Ha Nuel reminds him that he would be left behind again, should Seok Ho jump to his death. Seok Ho explains that even breathing hurts too much and then they start to cry and scream for Sung Hyun whilst CEO Byun looks on. Back at the hospital, Ha Nuel tells the room that he remembers it all. Remembers that Sung Hyun was so uncomfortable being around other people that the family never went out together. He also remembers that everything started to change when Sung Hyun made a friend: Seok Ho who always came on his day off to take Sung Hyun out and even though he’d thought that was the end of their relationship after his brother died, Seok Ho still came to find him. He found him, held his hand and helped him clear his name. Ha Nuel asks that he and Seok Ho should stop trying to console each other. He adds that Geu Rin is right, if Seok Ho hadn’t re-entered their lives, things wouldn’t be so good and so he asks Seok Ho that they should both stop asking themselves ‘what if’ and then finishes it all by informing him that the band has decided to go on the show to perform Sung Hyun’s song and so Seok Ho should get right back up and help them get Sung Hyun’s song back.
8. Everyone’s looking for Choi Joon Ha
Convinced that the only way to reclaim Sung Hyun’s song is to get Choi Joon Ha to admit that the song wasn’t his to begin with, Seok Ho sets out to locating the elusive singer. His search leads him to a friend of Choi Joon Ha who admits that she herself hasn’t seen him yet, ever since five years prior when they had coffee together when his father was sick and lived in a nursing home. Seok Ho asks if she knew where Choi Joon Ha’s fathers home is at and although she doesn’t know the exact place, she does know the area Choi Joon Ha was coming from when he told her that he was coming from visiting his father: Yeongwol. This information leads him to the Yeongwol Senior Home where the nurse tells him that the old man’s alzheimer’s is so severe that he can’t even recognize his son visiting him from Australia. Seok Ho files that information away. He catches a break when Joo Han meets with him to tell him that Choi Joon Ha is in Korea, not Australia. His reason? To screw Joon Suk one last time before he resigns (I’ve got to say this Joo Han. You’re not as dumb as I thought you were) and to repay a little of the debt he owes Ha Nuel. Seok Ho gets the gang to start staking out hotels, whilst he stakes out the senior home, except, Choi Joon Ha is right beneath their nose, paying his respects to Sung Hyun at his memorial site. Min Joo finally negotiates with her father to use his connections to find Choi Joon Ha.
9. Joon Suk finds Choi Joon Ha
But even as Min Joo finds the information, she tells Seok Ho to hurry as Joon Suk has also been using his connections to find Choi Joon Ha. And sure enough, as Seok Ho races towards the address, Choi Joon Ha is meeting Joon Suk who informs him about Ha Nuel being Sung Hyun’s brother. He also tells Choi Joon Ha that because of the show, Ha Nuel found out what happened and Seok Ho who was the friend that introduced Sung Hyun to Joon Suk, who also happens to be managing Ha Nuel’s band is looking for him like crazy. He mentions Choi Joon Ha’s children and tells him that now is not the time to be a shameful father to them. (you’re the shameless one Joon Suk. I hope you rot in jail!). He warps the truth that should Seok Ho be able to reveal the truth by getting Choi Joon Ha to confess, everyone in the country will point to Choi Joon Ha as the man who stole a disabled man’s song. (What about you snake who stole the song and handed it to Choi Joon Ha, then rubbed salt into Sung Hyun’s wounds till he committed suicide? What would they do to you asshole?) He ends it all by telling Choi Joon Ha to leave the country so he won’t be found out.
10. Seok Ho meets Choi Joon Ha
Whilst Joon Suk is spreading his poison, Seok Ho arrives at the hotel and begins to furiously search for Choi Joon Ha. He gets to the reception and calls out Choi Joon’s Ha room number to help them call him up and inform him that he has a guest. Except, the receptionist informs him that Choi Joon Ha has already checked out. When Seok Ho asks for Choi Joon Ha’s contact information, he’s denied the information. The receptionist though informs him that Choi Joon Ha left something in the room and should he ask for it she can always pass on the message. Seok Ho does just that, and then it’s nighttime and Seok Ho is sitting alone at a bar, with the seat across his, clearly empty. As he seats in the exact same spot where he’d last had a drink with Sung Hyun, we hear the message Seok Ho had left for Choi Joon Ha. He’d introduced himself and added that he was Sung Hyun’s friend. He’d told him that he really wanted to meet him and he was aware of why Choi Joon Ha hadn’t been able to sing the song again. He also added that he doesn’t resent the man because he too had the exact same thing to someone else and that on the day of the release, the songwriter he’d stolen from had committed suicide. He reinforces that he can’t resent Choi Joon Ha but would rather share a drink with him, on Sung Hyun’s death anniversary, at the same bar he and Sung Hyun used to frequent when the latter was alive. The bar is just about to close, when Choi Joon Ha walks in.
Character I wanted to bitchslap:
Because even with the beating he’d received, this idiot was still running his mouth and mocking Seok Ho and Ha Nuel’s pain. Forget the beating, I want to feel the satisfaction of my hand connecting with his smug face. Asshole!
Headache inducing moment:
I kept screaming at Seok Ho to just turn around and he would find Choi Joon Ha. As in, come on, the guy walked right past him, plus he was about to run away! And then to make it all worse, Seok Ho wasted valuable minutes writing down a memo for the man who just walked out! Like sheesh!
This episode’s a Sazerac. It’s hard hitting and punches you in the face with all the pain and emotions this episode is all about. But then, it mellows down and you’re filled with the tingling sensation of all the potential contained therein in the remaining episodes.
