Sometimes, all you need is a little space to grow, spread your wings and fly. Gong Shim’s mother acts like a mother for the first time in too long. Dan Tae and Joo Soo speak their feelings and Gong Shim wants to start new. Gong Mi will always be on the run and Dan Tae is closer to discovering the truth.
Top 10 Moments:
- Gong Shim takes the day for herself
Whilst remembering Gong Shim’s tears the previous night, Dan Tae transfers the soil in the cup into a larger pot and replants the seed (is this a symbolic representation of Gong Shim needing to get out of the tight spot her job and her parents and being under her sister’s shadow have created, so she can spread her wings and bloom? Because if so, good job writer, good job). When he hears her house door open, Dan Tae runs downstairs only to come face to face with Gong Shim’s father, and the shocking news that Gong Shim headed in to work that morning. Dan Tae tries calling her but her number doesn’t go through. Instead, we see Gong Shim take a hike up the mountains to be alone with her thoughts. She does smile when she sees the selca Dan Tae took of himself eating. She finally makes her reappearance and asks Dan Tae not to ask her what happened that led to her crying her eyes out the previous night. He promises to not ask her any questions.
2. Gong Mi is the worst sister on the planet
Gong Shim breaks the news to her parents about having quit working at Star Group. Whilst her mother tries to get her to go back, and her father look stunned at the news, Gong Mi who overhears is thrilled at the news as she hadn’t been comfortable with Gong Shim working there anyway. Girl, you just keep sinking lower and lower. When she asks Gong Shim why she quit and Gong Shim replies her that she doesn’t think she’s cut out for the job, instead of acting like a big sister would and telling her little sister that she can do anything if she puts her mind to it, Gong Mi agrees with Gong Shim’s statement (girl, I hope someone smacks you on the head sometime soon) and tells her that she would find something better. Thankfully though, she leaves the room in time, or she would have seen Gong Shim receive a message from Joon Soo to meet him outside, and she might have overheard him apologizing to her on behalf of his mother for the abhorrent way Gong Shim was treated.
3. Gong Shim almost gets scammed
When she gets back home, Gong Shim receives yet another text message. But this one, is from her senior in school who offers her a job. Gong Shim, thinking this is amazing news heads out late that night for an interview. Dan Tae who spots her on her way out, wonders what kind of job interview takes place at night and hopes it’s not a pyramid scheme. Cut to Gong Shim in an obvious pyramid scheme setup where the people are promised that they would start earning 10,000 dollars a month if they stick with the training. When a couple of them try to run out, only one person escapes and the group begins to collect the phones of those in attendance. Thankfully, Dan Tae runs into the first person who was able to run away from the room and questions him about the place. Just as the pyramid scheme pushers are about to start demanding money from the attendees (and even Gong Shim’s not spared as they tell her that even if she doesn’t have money in her account, she can always get a loan), Dan Tae comes in to save the day with some deserved beatings and the command that everyone who was scammed into being there should leave. Gong Shim is particularly grateful and on her way out, kicks the sunbae who had lured her into the scheme.
4. Joon Soo’s mother was in on the plan
Dan Tae meets with the grandmother again to give her updates. Having narrowed it down that the man who called the grandmother to hand her Joon Pyo’s necklace was captured by a security camera across the street, when he made the call from a payphone, Dan Tae informs her that although the camera quality is grainy, he has professionals working on enhancing the picture. On his way out, he runs into the shady director and Joon Soo’s mother who wonders what would happen if Joon Soo’s found. The shady director who Joon Soo’s mother refers to as ‘oppa’ claims that that wouldn’t happen seeing that they’d already thrown away Joon Pyo (I knew that witch had something to do with it! I hope you both get prosecuted!). He says that they both know that since Joon Pyo witnessed his mother being hit, and lost his voice and his memories, they both know it’s not possible. Besides, if Joon Pyo had recovered his memories, he would have come back himself anyway. He says they can rest easy since it’s either Joon Pyo’s dead, or he’s lost his memories. Joon Soo’s mother says that either way, they have to make sure that Joon Pyo is never found so that things wouldn’t go back to the way they were (Woman, you should be hoping that that’s the only thing that happens. You both are guilty of kidnapping and you indirectly led to his mother’s dead. I see prison in your future, so you would be returning to something worse than what you had in the past). As part of their plan, Shady director goes to Dan Tae’s office, where he sees a picture of Dan Tae’s adopted father who he recognizes. A flashback shows that shady director had handed over Dan Tae to Dan Tae’s adopted father immediately the kidnapping happened and had promised to come back the next day to get the boy. Except, Dan Tae’s adopted father had overhead him talking to someone about offing Joon Pyo, so the man had lied when he’d run into the adopted uncle that he’d lost Joon Pyo. Thankfully, shady director thinks Dan Tae is the sergeant’s biological son and not actually Joon Pyo and leaves, shaken.
5. Gong Shim’s mother learns the truth
Whilst delivering makeup samples to Joon Soo’s mother who is testing them out, the conversation diverts towards Joon Soo’s father shopping for a new secretary. Well aware that that used to be her daughter’s job, Gong Shim’s mother uses the opportunity to ask why the old secretary resigned. Joon Soo’s mother scoffs that the old secretary didn’t resign, she was fired for trying to get friendly with her son. She muses aloud about people not knowing their place whilst Gong Shim’s mother seems lost in thought and just a bit sad. She heads back home to explain that Gong Shim must have felt so sad at being wrongfully dismissed and yet her concern was for her parents who she didn’t want to be worried. Her mother is even more upset that just because she wanted Joon Soo’s mother to buy the makeup she was selling, she allowed the woman to talk badly about her daughter (wow, this is a wonderful development. Are Gong Shim’s parents actually acting like parents right now?). Her mother gets so worked up that at the next meeting, not only does she admit to being Gong Shim’s mother to Joon Soo’s mother, she also challenges her for firing her daughter indiscriminately and then wrestles her to the ground. Wait a minute. That. Was. AWESOME!!!
6. Gong Mi gets a job at Star Group
Gong Mi finally meets with Joon Soo’s father, with Joon’s mother in attendance, although she’s still rotating her arm and keeping the fact that her old friend tossed her like a rag doll a secret from her husband. Joon Soo’s father to show his gratitude, offers Gong Mi a place amongst his company’s legal team. Gong Mi is of course delighted to take the job (I wonder if this would be all that’s needed for her mother to forget all the injustice against Gong Shim and praise Gong Mi on getting the job. Mother bear, keep on being a mother bear, don’t backslide to your non-mothering ways!!!). To further cement their new relationship, Joon Soo’s mother has him invite Gong Mi to the restaurant opening. She makes it in time, only to spot Dan Tae being chummy with Joon Soo. The sight has her running back (Girl, you’re in for a relationship of constantly being on the run. Serves you right for being a lying manipulative snake).
7. Joon Soo tells Gong Shim his feelings
After having discovered her new place of work, thanks to Dan Tae, Joon Soo visits Gong Shim for the second time. Unlike the first time when she had been swamped with orders and they couldn’t talk, Joon Soo comes at the close of the day and they order food like customers. Whilst Gong Shim is talking a mile a minute, trying to fill in the awkward silence, Joon Soo comes right out to tell her that he likes her. The words surprise Gong Shim who spends the night thinking about them, until they’re halted by Dan Tae’s return home and his horrified discovery that his apartment is once again flooded. Dan Tae ends up spending the night at Gong Shim’s house and when she still can’t sleep at night, she wanders out to get water and notices that Dan Tae’s covers are pulled down. When she tries to cover him up, he pops up like a jack in the box and she hits him with the covers when he asks her to try tucking him in again. Sometime later that night, Dan Tae gets covered again and he pulls his jack in the box act, except he gets surprised-slapped by Gong Shim’s father who had been the one trying to cover him up. Hahaha.
8. The seed sprouts as does Gong Shim
After one of the most disgusting breakfasts ever (seriously, Dan Tae sucks at table manners. Separating the fish that everyone on the table wants to eat, with your bare fingers and then licking said fingers clean is not good tables manners Dan Tae), Dan Tae heads upstairs and discovers the sprouted plant. He shares the good news with Gong Shim who is not as happy as he expects her to be. Gong Shim instead, shares the news that she has to travel to Jeju Island, for a horticultural job she just got and would be away for two years. The news is unexpected and devastating for Dan Tae and just as devastating for Joon Soo who Gong Shim told that she needs the time to grow and love herself as with all her faults, she would be quick to assume that anyone who likes her, likes her out of pity.
9. Dan Tae speaks his heart
After trying his best to get Gong Shim to stay; attempts that all ended with Gong Shim insisting that she has to go, Dan Tae spends the night beset with all the images of the times he’s spent with Gong Shim and how happy it all made him. Unable to sleep, her calls Gong Shim up to tell her how his world has revolved around the fact that they live in the same apartment building and so he’s been always able to see her. But now that she wants to go to Jeju Island, that means he wouldn’t be seeing her and without seeing her, he doesn’t know how to cope. He tells her to think about it and he hopes that by the next day, she would tell him that she’s not leaving after all.
10. Dan Tae makes a discovery
Dan Tae receives the promised recovered video from the professionals, just as he’d told the grandmother that he would and plays the video. He is shocked to recognize that the man leaving the payphone that day was his father. Even more shocking is when he remembers that he’d told the grandmother that whoever had been the one to send her the necklace must travelled from the Philippines (where the first call had come from) to Korea within a particular period of time. Sure enough, when he checks his father’s passport which he’d been given at a diner by someone who said his father had forgotten it there, he finds out that his father was in Korea during that period of time. Putting together the pieces, he figures that his father must have been the one to take Joon Pyo during that time, and wonders where Joon Pyo is at the moment. His aunt guiltily tells him not to bother with the tree as she knows someone who would handle it. The words remind Dan Tae that it really must have been his father he’d seen on that day he’d decided to go check out the tree, and sure enough, when he goes there the next morning, he finds his father shoveling the area around the tree. With tears in his eyes, he walks towards his unsuspecting father, whilst across town, Gong Shim looks around for Dan Tae to tell him her decision.
Character I wanted to bitch slap:
No one in this episode. Gong Shim’s mother did it all for me, with that satisfying tussle she gave Joon Soo’s mother. You go mother bear! Keep it up!
Headache inducing moment:
Thankfully, there were no moments of stupidity, tension or pain in this episode for me. I’m sure next episode would have a variety for me to choose from though. But for now, it’s all good.
This episode’s a sidecar. It’s warm and mellow with the maturity of all our characters, from Gong Shim who is learning to love herself, to her parents who are now acting like parents, to Dan Tae and Joon So who can come out and speak about their feelings openly. Gong Mi doesn’t count and neither do Joon So’s parents.
