Sometimes distrust can lead to potential losses that can be most damaging. Tae Hae’s still lying that he’s not doing his acts for his friends. Yeo Kyung still has his back, even though it goes against everything she believes in. Dae Chun regains consciousness, but maybe not for long, and the noose is tightening around Gil Do’s neck even though he’s still unawares. Moo Myeong is setting the table well, and soon, there shall be a feast.
Top 10 Moments:
- Tae Ha impersonates his character
Whilst Gil Do and congressman Tae Sub size themselves up as they sip their tea, Tae Ha, who was sent to handle Yeo Kyung’s unexpected visit, sees her first and has enough time to school his emotions and subtly shake his head so Yeo Kyung would not give away their past relationship. Thankfully she catches a clue, although it takes a while to do so, and follows his lead in pretending not to know him. This makes Tae Ha’s cold and calm rejection of her request to see Gil Do even more brutal as he basically tells her that without a warrant, she’s not getting anywhere near his boss. When she meets with him outside Goongnakwon, his response is the same as the one he gave Moo Myeong in the previous episode: he’s going to continue to work at Goongnakwon for his own reasons. He tells her the same thing Moo Myeong told him when he first ran into him at Goongnakwon: she should leave and never come back.
2. Congressman Tae Sub messes with Gil Do’s head
Whilst Tae Ha and Yeo Kyung are dealing with their drama outside, Gil Do’s meeting with congressman Tae Sub also has its hiccups as amidst the flattery Gil Do heaps on the congressman, the congressman states that Gil Do looks familiar and asks if they’ve met before (something tells me the congressman knows exactly who you are Gil Do). Gil Do insists that this is their first meeting, but the congressman also insists that they must have met before. He cuts straight to the point that he only meets people who are beneficial to him. Gil Do tries to dance around the issue by kissing up to him but the congressman stops him again with a saying about noodles and politics with the message to always come with both hands held out together if you want to succeed. At the end of the dinner, Gil Do asks the congressman to visit again and he agrees to do so, at the noodles competition (looks like it won’t be so easy for you to cheat after all Gil Do). Not only does the congressman push for a fair competition, he also pushes that it be held in two days.
3. The competition is set
Following congressman Tae Sub’s words, Gil Do chooses the next day (two days after his dinner with Tae Sub) as the day of the competition which would take place after closing hours. It’s a blind test and Seol Mi Ja names the dish: medicinal herb noodles. Their task is to remove the bitterness but retain some flavor and they must use five herbs. They’re allowed to have one assistant and although the deputy head of noodles chooses first, Moo Myeong gets to choose Da Hee as his assistant (seriously deputy, how can you bypass the girl with the perfect sense of smell? Especially when you don’t have Moo Myeong’s perfect tastebuds.
4. Gil Do learns that Dae Chun has regained consciousness
Whilst feeding him medicine (or poison), Dae Chun’s deaf and dumb protector is startled when his eyes snap open. Filled with panic, he heads straight to Gil Do to relay the message. At about the same time, Gang Sook remembers Gil Do’s words that he would be watching every single thing the chefs do in carrying out the challenge and the video of Da Hee’s confrontation with her father and realizes that Gil Do probably has cameras all over Goongnakwon. She hurries to his office to find the screen and is almost stopped by Tae Ha. But Tae Ha isn’t a match for Gang Sook and she pushes into the room, claiming that she’s lost something. At the same time, Gil Do’s alone with his unconscious father-in-law who he tries to shake into consciousness, unaware that Gang Sook had found his viewing station and can see what can be assumed to be him attempting to strangle her father.
5. Dae Chun’s been slowly poisoned
Gang Sook rushes over to her father’s side, but Tae Ha had called Gil Do early enough that he was able to pretend that he was just giving the old man a massage. Except, he’d left bruises in his wake. Whilst he and Gang Sook are arguing, Dae Chun coughs, halting the argument and making Gang Sook call both the doctor and Seol Mi Ja. The doctor lets them know that Dae Chun would continue to slip in and out of consciousness, however, what he finds suspicious is the fact that there are signs that Dae Chun’s been poisoned (meaning what the guard has been giving him was poison. We don’t know though whether he knows it’s poison or thinks it’s medicine), but the doctor can’t identify which poison it is. Gang Sook is immediately suspicious of Gil Do (as are we).
6. Gang Sook sucks at planning ahead
After listening to the doctor’s words and with the memories of the hidden screen burned into her mind, Gang Sook calls the detective in charge of her father’s case and hurries him to come over. Just as Gil Do reaches Tae Ha and slaps him for letting Gang Sook into his room, Gang Sook shows up with the detectives in tow, whilst holding onto the remote. Stating that she has her proof and that she’s here to bury Gil Do, she leads the detectives in and presses the remote to reveal the hidden console that has… the TV set to stock reports and news. Of course Tae Ha would disable it immediately he figured it out. He’s smart that way. Gang Sook leaves the office humiliated whilst Gil Do gives his wallet to Tae Ha and tells him to spend all the money inside as compensation for Gil Do hitting him and for Tae Ha doing a good job.
7. Gil Young and Moo Myeong meet
Gil Young comes over as usual for his deliveries and runs into Da Hee who tells him the good news about her promotion to the noodles department. He excitedly hugs her, but is seen by Moo Myeong who comes out to say hello to the friend who has thought him dead and has been searching for him for like forever. Gil Young’s upset that he’s been searching for Moo Myeong all this while and the latter now just deigned to show himself to Gil Young. He’s even more upset that everyone seems to be converging at Goongnakwon, himself inclusive, even though the only reason he’s been delivering vegetables at Goongnakwon was because Moo Myeong had asked him to do so (interesting).
8. Yeo Kyung sees just how much of an underling Tae Ha’s become
After the witness who was meant to testify developed injuries he claimed he acquired by falling down the stairs Yeo Kyung continues to investigate, till she finds the file from the blackbox of the car that was parked close to where the victim had been discovered and see the true identity of the person responsible for the man’s myriad of injuries: Park Tae Ha. Yeo Kyung immediately closes her laptop the minute the investigator came in and said that she didn’t really find anything in the file they were sent. She not only lies, but takes it a step further by deleting the file itself.
9. Dae Chun regains consciousness again and calls for Da Hee
When Gang Sook returns to her father’s side, she’s disheartened at her failure in catching Gil Do, and asks Seol Mi Ja to agree to the noodles contest being postponed until her father regains consciousness. That is highly improbable and Seol Mi Ja thinks so as well. Before Gang Sook can argue, her father mutters Da Hee’s so many times that they sent for her and she came running over. Gang Sook’s understandably hurt, and even more so when she realizes that her father refuses to communicate till she and Seol Mi Ja are out of the room. But, Dae Chun is only able to mutter the word ‘Cho’ before he relapses into a stroke and Da Hee keeps this a secret from both Gang Sook and Seol Mi Ja. Seol Mi Ja suspects that Da Hee is keeping something from her but can’t put her finger on it. She also doesn’t know that Moo Myeong is keeping Da Hee’s parentage from her as well.
10. Da Hee scents a poison
After leaving Dae Chun’s, Da Hee caught a whiff of the poison which she could smell, on Dae Chun’s bodyguard. She couldn’t put a name on the smell, so she ignored it, but got concerned when she caught the smell on Gil Do, who she had no idea had prepared a syringe filled with the poison overnight. The smell weighs on her mind so much so that when she catches a whiff of it amongst the kitchen ingredients, she mentions the properties of the smell she’s looking to identify and is just about to tell Myeong Hee the people she’s smelt it on when Gil Do, Gang Sook, Seol Mi Ja and congressman Tae Sub walk in to judge the competition. Whilst waiting for the food to arrive, Gil Do leaves the table as about the same time when Moo Myeong brings out the last ingredient he wants to add to his dish: a powder that can be a medicine in small doses and poison in large (the same poison Gil Do had used to kill Moo Myeong’s parents and had been slowly using to kill Dae Chun). Da Hee smells the powder and when Moo Myeong identifies it as Cho, she puts the pieces together and runs towards Dae Chun’s house. Gil Do though already has an early start, and even though Dae Chun called his name and asked him to stop, he continues in trying to push the content of the syringe into Dae Chun’s IV tube.
Character I wanted to bitch slap:
Because nothing screams stupidity as much as rushing headlong into things without planning it out well. She keeps claiming she would become a monster to take down her husband but she’s not a smart monster at all. She just showed her hand and I so badly wanted to bitch slap her for it. Woman, leave the sleuthing to the younger kids who are smarter, or even Seol Mi Ja cuz you are not smart at all.
Headache inducing moment:
It reminds me of the scene in episode 1, when I knew Gil Do was going to cut Ha Jung Tae’s rope and I hoped and prayed that he would stop in time. It’s the same way with this episode; the screaming and praying and hoping that Da Hee makes it in time or even Gang Sook to keep Gil Do from killing one more person.
This episode’s a single malt scotch: layered, complex and smoky, with that burn as it slides and hits all the right spots on its way down.
