Even sociopaths can get blindsided if the players take their time and place the traps properly. Secrets come pouring out this episode with Tae Ha meeting two of his old friends, and a new one. Da Hee finds the tip of the iceberg and Moo Myeong is now one of two who knows Gil Do’s exploitable weakness. A pity we the audience happen to like said weakness.
Top 10 Moments:
- Moo Myeong comes clean to Tae Ha
After Tae Ha tries to convince him to leave Goongnakwon, saying that the restaurant is responsible for all the troubles they’ve been going through, Moo Myeong lets Tae Ha know that Ha Jung Tae (which he thinks is Gil Do’s name and doesn’t know is his father’s name) burned his parents to death. And even though Tae Ha tells him Gil Do’s not someone he can take down on his own and what it will just result in is death, Moo Myeong merely walks away. Don’t sweat it Tae Ha. You all will contribute in the eventual downfall of Gil Do. It might be with you working together or going after him individually, but some day, the man will fall. You can be rest assured.
2. Seol Mi Ja shares Goongnakwon’s layout with Da Hee
Gang Sook’s question to Seol Mi Ja about how well she knows Da Hee seems to have struck a chord as she goes to meet Da Hee in the kitchen (where Da Hee’s kneading dough) to tell her how curiously fascinating she finds her and to also text her a scanned copy of Goongnakwon’s layout. Seol Mi Ja asks Da Hee to get into the hidden room in Gil Do’s office and baits her with the probability of her finding whatever it is she came to Goongnakwon for in there.
3. So Tae Sub introduces himself to Yeo Kyung as a friend of her father
After having her transferred to the special branch, So Tae Sub (the congressman talking to the chief prosecutor from the previous episode) has the smarmy prosecutor bring Yeo Kyung over for dinner to reminisce about how much she reminds him of her parents and tell her to look into Doggoo as she just might discover something interesting. Why do I feel like So Tae Sub is the one she should actually be worried about? Especially considering the fact that he met up with Hyung Jung (the woman who seduced Gil Do three years prior) and asked her to keep on with her work to get Gil Do to take up politics.
4. Tae Ha and Yeo Kyung meet
So Tae Sub gets Yeo Kyung granted permission to investigate Doggoo’s practices which is why she runs into Tae Ha who was in the office telling Doo Chul to tell Doggoo that he wants to meet him. When she and Tae Ha have a chance to talk, he tells her to stop looking into the case he’d asked her to investigate six years prior and let go of the past. But Yeo Kyung refuses to give up the case, saying the must show the world who was the instigator of both their parents’ tragedy.
5. Gang Sook gets Chef Hong to spy on Da Hee
Based on the video she watched, Gang Sook acts coldly to the smiling Da Hee and asks Chef Hong who shares a room with Da Hee to report everything Da Hee does to her. She also asks her to keep this request a secret.
6. Moo Myeong starts building his ally support system
After figuring out that Goongnakwon customers aren’t eaten the royal pheasant buckwheat noodles broth along with the noodles, Moo Myeong figures out that it’s because the sauce being used to make the broth has gone bad. He’s able to convince Gil Do that why he broke the clay pot containing the sauce was so the sauce can breathe and stop going bad but both he and the head of broth know that it’s not the head of broth’s fault for not being aware of the bad sauce. Rather, it was Gil Do. Although the head of broth asks him to keep quite, Moo Myeong’s point has been made. Gil Do is sabotaging the kitchen.
7. Hyung Jung tries to win Gil Do over to the dark side
Informing him of the upcoming bye-elections, Hyung Jung offers Gil Do advice on how best to get elected: simply get nominated and the money will flow as well as connections as strong as a minister’s. Except, she gets caught during her pep talk by Gang Sook who identifies the way Hyung Jung is leaning over her husband and informs her that she’s mistress number four, soon to be replaced. She leans in close to let Hyung Jung know that if she keeps pressing and eventually leads Gil Do into politics and away from Goongnakwon, she will come for her.Except after Hyung Jung leaves, Gang Sook tells Gil Do that he can go into politics if he wants but he must make sure he wins and that nothing happens to Goongnakwon.
8. Moo Myeong and So Tae Sub are old friends
Gil Do, needing the support of a politician to help further his political career approaches congressman Choi who tells him that the best person to meet would be So Tae Sub. When asked how he would get closer to this man, congressman Choi said he should talk to Moo Myeong who has a close relationship with So Tae Sub. Gil Do is surprised as are we and we learn that Moo Myeong has been cooking noodles for So Tae Sub since they met at a monk’s temple. Moo Myeong is building so many connections and I wonder where it would all lead. I also wonder if So Tae Sub is aware that Moo Myeong was the person congressman Choi betrayed so he could get closer to Gil Do, as per So Tae Sub’s command.
9. Tae Ha gets lured in to protect Moo Myeong
Tae Ha remembers Moo Myeong’s insistence to act like he doesn’t know him, so meets up with Doggoo to inform the latter that should he or Doo Chul run into Moo Myeong, they’re to pretend like they’ve never seen him before, in order to protect Moo Myeong. Doggo latches onto this concern to convince Tae Ha that the best way to protect Moo Myeong is from within. Tae Ha most likely thinking of Yeo Kyung’s words about them all pushing forward to find out the truth without any fear of what might happen to them agrees. Doggoo agrees to say nothing about Moo Myeong if Tae Ha agrees to watch out for Da Hee on Doggoo’s behalf. He introduces Tae Ha to Da Hee who remembers her as the soy sauce thief who gave him her glasses in episode 3, whilst Da Hee who is thinking about Gang Sook’s sudden cold behavior towards her, couldn’t even be bothered to look at Tae Ha. Except she does remember him and corners him when he’s on his way to Gil Do’s office.
10. Da Hee discovers Gil Do’s secret lair and Moo Myeong discovers her parentage
Following Tae Ha’s agreement to work for him, Gil Do first has him tested out to confirm his loyalty and worth, then immediately has him replace Sung Rok as his new personal minion. This move comes with an overhaul of Tae Ha’s wardrobe which now comprises of snazzy suits and turning Sung Rok’s old room into Tae Ha’s. What this means is that Chef Hong is able to steal Sung Rok’s old belongings, under the guise of recycling them and hands them over to Moo Myeong (weird but I was expecting it to have been Gang Sook she was taking it to) who discovers a DNA test result confirming Da Hee as Gil Do’s daughter. It also meant that whilst Gil Do was out shopping with Tae Ha, his office was empty enough for Da Hee to sneak in and discover his room of identities.
Character I wanted to bitch slap:
The deputy head of noodles for punching Moo Myeong when Moo Myeong was trying to get to the bottom of why the broth tasted so bad. Nobody hits Moo Myeong you ass.
Headache inducing moment:
I was so tense, wondering if Da Hee would get caught and whether or not Gil Do would prove to us that this is the episode where he considers killing his own child a line he can easily cross. The headache will remain though. Because she’s still in that room and he can walk into it at any point in time. Can’t wait for next week.
This episode is classic Master: God of Noodles. Dark and heady and has you chasing after every little drop just like a stout. And the frothing on top? That’s the icing on the cake. Everyone has an agenda and Gil Do is right in the middle of it all. It’s perfect.
